People should keep in mind that CRT filters depend entirely on proper scaling, so watching it on TH-cam will not give you the proper picture of what it looks like in-person on your TV, it'll be distorted and have shimmering artifacts. I found that everyone who comments that CRT filters look bad, they're judging a video or something, instead of seeing it properly integer scaled on a screen.
Integer+ scaling bleeds off the screen because that's what it's supposed to do--"integer" scales at the highest integer that fills the screen without overscanning. "Integer+" scales one integer higher than that--which inevitably means that some overscan area is lost, but that's the price paid for filling the screen. Normally the pocket can do non-integer scaling and fill the screen regardless, but the way the CRT screen filter works requires integer scaling, hence the sudden scaling issues in openFPGA cores that didn't previously have them. Unfortunately it's nothing that core authors can ultimately fix, though they might be able to mitigate the issue somewhat by offering the ability to alter core aspect ratios to compensate, as can already be done in the SNES and NES cores.
How can you compensate the size reduction with the SNES and NES cores? I can't find the option. To me this is a big disapointment. The fact that Analogue couldn't offer the same quality of filters they offer with the GB, GBA and GG cores is a big let down.
@@VideoGameEsoterica I always appreciate your humour in these videos. I'm so happy with my Pocket. I think I've gained more appreciation after watching your videos, so thank you
I find the CRT filters to not really be worth it for the higher res content on the Pocket since the screen is just too small to make it that noticeable. The LCD pixel grid filters are fantastic though for the lower res content like the handhelds!
I find they look great on SNES games using integer+. Most SNES games are actually designed so that you don't need the overscan area that integer+ scaling eliminates.
On MISTer I use no interpolation and Adaptive Scanlines 00-00 which gives a very nice horizontal scanline effect. It would satisfy most but it does have problems with disappearing scanlines when things move fast. That's why I'm planning to buy the TINK4K. Playing on a CRT is a great idea and optimal in many ways but for me the screen is usually too small. With new TV's, you can get an image with Neo Geo games (for example) of nearly 40'' on a 50' TV when you measure the play area. That's huge and bigger than even using my 29'' Arcade monitor. Plus, you don't have to be strong to rotate the screen.
@@VideoGameEsoterica As long as you're satisfied... I was raised with a 14'' Sony Trinitron. Super TV but it's too small for me now. My myopia reduces things in size. It distorts things and makes them even smaller. I could get contact lenses to solve this but my eyes get very dry and sore.
mat panella new version doesn't have this option. and i still haven't figured out how to do it. in the new version when i pressed (enable all display words) it says its finished but i don't have any new display modes. help?
@@VideoGameEsoterica thanks! i even tried to install the version (of panella's updater) from the (date of the) video. and it gave that error that everybody gets that they tell you to ignore. but still, i didn't work. i even tried install the other core, by budude2, didn't work. i really want to crack this one, even though its just filters. i use the pocket sync. the only thing i see there is the palettes (which i don't know how to use) and another thing, is in the core section, if you pick your core (gameboy for exampe, or game gear, or nes) in display option you can enable the filters. it doesn't give you any cool filters though..)
You forgot to mention the original GBA SP's are 001 models. It is my favorite GB screen, just because it could be evenly lit, and there is no ghosting, compared to 101 screens (the same is true for the original Nintendo DS screen vs. DS Lite and DSi screens). Is there a GBA SP 001 screen filter for the Analogue Pocket in development?
Love those palettes but Analogue Inc. sure has to make that palette selection menu transparent like the display mode selection menu as well. It's a bit annoying choosing a palette currently, going back to see it, go back into the menu to choose another one and so on. :P
Love all these options. I'm confused about the Genesis core issue though. Spiritualized works fine for me, but ericlewis still freezes at the Display menu. I'm on Pocket Updater version 2.41.0. Honestly I'm ok with sticking with Spiritualized, but I did like the composite blending feature.
Which sections of your videos do you normally shoot at 24 fps, and which sections do you normally shoot at 60 fps? This posted video is 60 fps. On a side note, what is your preferred program to use for a 3:2 pulldown?
All in camera shots are 24 fps. They are then placed in a 60fps timeline in Resolve. Resolve handles the rest. For YT that works fine. It allows for the footage vibe I want while allowing for 60fps playback of gameplay
Is there a program to make your own custom color palette? I’ve been making vc gb games for 3ds with n.s.u.i. and it gives you the option to customize the palettes and I’ve really enjoyed that. I messed with a few games and was able to make some palettes that made the games almost look like gbc versions. I was very pleased with some of my results. Much more lively looking than many of the more standard palettes that often are just different shades of the same color basically.
Do you know which aspect ratios are being used with SNES and Genesis when using integer+ mode? Would there be a way to change the colors of the thick borders when using integer mode to white to make them less annoying on a white pocket?
Anyone had luck running pocket updater on Mac OS Sonoma? I can’t get run to run on my M2 Mac. I’ve allowed it in system preferences, but keep getting a message that “the developer needs to update the application.”
Got to be honest I am a little bit disappointed that analog didn’t make it easier for those filters to be added, without the core updaters needing to intervene Or for users to do some janky JSON editing

Yes the problem always is YT. Compression, what kind of device you are watching it on, etc
thank you so much for your updates and short tutorials, they are super useful and motivate me to play around with the pocket options
Happy they help :)
I've just got the Pocket and this has been incredibly helpful, thanks
Glad it’s helping :)

Thanks for the tutorials on how to update! i appreciate you! No sarcastic comment from me this week! Happy new year!

Yeah the CRT filters are mostly for those that are playing on their TVs with the dock.
Yes on the Pocket screen I don’t use them. Honestly I rarely use any filters anywhere
100%

I admit to not being a filter user. Like at all

I’m either on a 20” PVM or a 70” 4K now. Best of both worlds
Does any have problem getting original GB DMG filter to work?
I haven’t had issues
They don't work yet. Spiritualized1997's GB core needs to be updated to support those three specific shaders. Hopefully soon.
Ahh yes I was on GB Studio under tools
They are supported with budude2's new GBC and GB cores that were uploaded a few days ago. They're available in the pocket updater as well.
I need to do a vid on those soon
4:54 AV WAS AN EFFECT FOR THIS GAME (Streets of Rage 2 SEGA MD ) IN THE BAR THE LIGHTS GLOW EFFECTIVELY!!

Where are the links for the Github with the GB studio patches???

MiSTer for everything, Pocket for handheld. I never use Pocket docked outside of these videos

So i think i unserstand more what i was missing.
I can't find the link for the patches (github) for the game, what should i search?
Thanks
That’ll happen!
are there any filters that just remove the scanlines on the original gbc/+ and original gba/+ filters?

Odd. Both mine didn’t freeze now. Early days!

No way to change border colors. It’s the same aspect ratio…just scaled on the X/Y axis to fit

I’d have to ask around. Only Macs I have are a G3/G4/Mac Pro on Dual Xeon’s that is an OLD OS
Whoo!
Hopefully Neo Geo Pocket soon
How does the docked, filtered pocket compare to your PVM?
I’d use my PVM first but I’d say that of all filters vs PVM convos
My genesis core is still crashing how do i fix😢 i use pocket updater it still crashes
Use the other core in the menu. Seems like one core freezes and the other doesn’t
Is it possible to connect a pocket to a CRT/PVM? I don't have a pocket yet.
Not yet. I’m working on a workaround
@@VideoGameEsoterica Ok. Where can I order a pocket?
Analogue website or eBay if you want to pay over retail (don’t do that)

Quick question do you think a Kingston 512GB microSD card would fit?
Would fit fine :)
I don't think you need that much. Remember that there is only one CD based system, not more (no MCD, no PS1, no Saturn).
If you get the Amiga stuff that is a big chunk of space
Here's a dumber question. How big can CAN you go??@@VideoGameEsoterica
