As an Aussie who is an avid Holden lover I have to say the Chevy Caprice PPV is a very different car to what we get in Aus. Firstly if you want to see the Aussie version google VE Holden Caprice. The Caprice PPV was based on the VE Commodore Series 2 the Series 1 Commodore was exported to the US as the G8. That interior in the PPV is taken straight out of the base model Commodore which is called the Omega, the engine is from a higher spec performance model most commonly the SS but here we call the engine AFM which stands for Active Fuel Management (Built in Port Melbourne in Victoria in the same place they build the V6 engines and then installed into the body during assembly in Elizabeth, South Australia). That front bumper is also straight off an Omega however all the parts on the body that usually have chrome have been blacked out. The factory Caprice has much more chrome on the body and bumpers with the addition of fog lights. The Caprice in Aus is a luxury vehicle over here you get the option for V8 or V6 and full leather interior including upgraded Bose sound system and full touch screen integration (available on all models however GPS and Maps are optional on Omega and Berlina) Privacy windows anda whole long list of extras for comfort. Basically the Caprice PPV in America has the interior of the Poverty/fleet spec Commodore and the Body of the luxury up spec car. I hope this helped anyone who was curious.

I'm surprised they discontinued the Caprice in the USA so early, they kept selling the Chevrolet Caprice in the Arabian Peninsula, and we even had some models that weren't available in North America. This model I recall seeing all around Saudi Arabia as a regular civilian car, along with the earlier Caprice models which were, and still are, quite prevalent.

It's really a Holden Caprice/Statesman that's been completely stripped out. In Australia, the Caprice is the top of the line model which now has the same interior as the VF Commodore or Chevrolet SS. Leather seats, swade dash, Bose audio, heads up display etc... The big difference between this and a Pontiac G8 (VE) and Chevrolet SS (VF) is that it is Long Wheel Base, the rear doors are far bigger. The Caprice also has its own chassis code being WM from 2006 to 2013 and the updated models being WN. Statesmen were discontinued for the WN update and instead they sold a Caprice and Caprice V. The interior of these PPV's are also unique they have a VE series 2 dash with Holden IQ but the same as the base model rather than what is used in the standard Statesmen/Caprice where the trim flows into the speedometer and the plastic trim around the audio system is separated from the air vents.

I come back to this video a lot more than I should but after owning 2 of these and one being bone stock and the other being a setup drag car. I wanna say they’re an awesome platform. I’ve had nothing but fun with these cars. They provide a lot of unique stuff with the ability to purchase true holden parts and get the feel of being JDM almost. They’re super easy to make fast and take a beating. The parts aren’t as hard to get as some may believe. All drive train is carried from a standard LS so it can be found anywhere oarts for a 5.3 can be. Same with the transmission. The rear ends are shared bewteen a Chevy ss and a camaro as well as G8 so you can find them pretty easily. Here and there parts are what I’ve found to be weird. I broke a stud off of the front hub and had to wait a few days for a new stud to come back in. Other than that you can pick these cars up for 6-10k depending what you want. Would recommend it to anyone who wants a fun car that fits all of your friends

They CAN be. You can get a Ford Police Interceptor Sedan (Otherwise known as a Taurus) with the base 2.0 Ecoboost I4. But it can be optioned to have the same 3.7 V6 from the Mustang or an upgraded version of the 3.5 Ecoboost V6 from the SHO (which allegedly now makes 385hp over the SHO's 365).
Basically it's a base Taurus that can have a higher power SHO engine. No wonder it's the fastest police vehicle!

I'd honestly rather have one of these over a Charger or Crown Vic or Taurus interceptor. They look meaner and more imposing to me, plus the speed. Back in the 90s the cop car market was dominated by the old B-Body Caprices. Departments loved them so much that a lot of times they'd keep them and fix them up instead of selling them. I think one of GM's biggest mistakes was axing the B-body line. Not just the Caprice, but the Buick Roadmaster and Cadillac Fleetwood were all such great cars.

I used to work at a place that built patrol cars (radios, lights, sirens, etc...) And we had to go pick up 8 of these at a dealership 2 hours away and bring them to our shop. man they are absolute rockets, and for a police vehicle, they handle unbelievably well. I wouldn't want to be stuck in one putting around city streets at 35 because they ride pretty rough, but if I was a trooper out on the highway all day, I'd take one in a heartbeat.

The reason it's called the Caprice is not so much about appealing to old men, but more so because in Australia, it's a Holden Caprice, not a Commodore. The Caprice in Australia was the luxury offering, with a longer wheelbase than the Commodore. Hence, I suspect GM got lazy and just slapped a bowtie on the front and were done with it

Our department stopped buying the Caprices this year. Tthey switched over to the Ford Taurus. BIG MISTAKE. The Caprice is really a gem. It's Usain Bolt with cop clothes on. Everything from the seats, to the steering feel, to the suspension is all G8. It even has a performance mode where you can change the transmission behavior and disable traction control. The damn car even downshifts at the entry of a corner so you can be in a lower gear upon exit. When I first got in the Ford Taurus I was so disappointed. So disappointed. For one, the seats are broad and flat. There is literally NO support. The windows are high, the dash is high and buttons too far away, the steering is light and lifeless, and the car is way too slow. I mean, the 3.5L EB is nice, but paired with the dynamics of the Taurus makes you not even want to push the thing. The Caprice however is the complete package. Who says that us police don't want side bolsters? Who said that we don't want a car that's a little firm? The Caprice is firm, and focused. The Caprice is for the officer that goes to the gym. The Taurus, for the guy that has 30 years on and a beer belly so big that he can't find his gun on his belt.

Cecil L: I'm surprised that you're surprised that the Caprice transmission downshifts when entering a corner. It's been a feature on Australian pursuit cars for decades. A friend of mine bought an ex-pursuit Commodore at a police auction in 1984. It did the same thing.

Cam failures on OHC police vehicles seem common across multiple brands. They idle a lot. When tons of halogen bulb light bars got replaced by power sipping LED, the cars got power burning MDT’s and camera systems- hence they sit there running. One brand added ecm code to fast idle every so often, to ensure top end oil.

I mean, it's actually more Caprice than you can get. Not only is it called a Holden Caprice in Australia but it's been in the exact same car market all it's life. It was a Caprice when it was the Australian version of the American one and now it's just reversed so it's not necessarily just in name, it still has that link. As for it being a G8, kind of, and kind of not. As someone who is looking for a G8, a lot of the G8/Commodore parts dont actually work on the Caprice (both US and Australian) as it's a longer wheelbase and very different rear and front fascias. The cabin is even longer than the G8/Commy, the only similarities is the basic styling and the chassis being an extended variant.
That being said, both are great and I have a strange love for Aussie cars so I'd love tho have the LHD Caprice and turn it into an HSV Grange.

Like to add that here in Australia the Caprice name has been used for the luxury version of the Holden Statesman since 1990. My daily is a '94 VS Caprice with a 5L V8, electric everything, IRS and a chiller in the glove box. That Chev PPV variation here is just a WM Caprice which I have seen go for as little as AUD$5k with the LS power plant.
