- Hey everyone! Today I'm here with a small break down on how I start my wigs. I feel like this is something most people don't really talk about, or just assume people already know? But regardless, when thinking about what I covered in my other spiking tutorial, I realized that this is also a very important step in the wig creation process and wanted to cover it for you guys! This tutorial is mostly targeted at spiky wigs, but most of the advice can apply to other types of wigs too!
Anyways, I hope you find this helpful! Let me know if there are any other kind off tutorials you'd like to see and I'll do my best to demo them for you guys (given I have the supplies on hand haha)

Im tryinbg to learn how to style wigs better. While this video is 5 years old its still just as helpful. This really helped me out. Im going to a con with 3 new cosplays and I had to style 3 wigs. For Sal Fisher from sally face i was able to just kinda make it messy and be creative but i struggle with exact spikes and oddly shaped bits so for my Reki Kyan wig its going to be a struggle especially since i have to add a headband into the mix. Your tip of sectioning out every spike before hand is SUPER helpful. I never thought about genuinely doing that because i figured id need loads of clips and supplies but nope! I used to be a rainbow loom kid too so ive got loads of small rubber bands lying around

Speaking of bakugo, i saw a bnha fighting game on instagram, idk what its called or anything. Anyways, so maybe if someone could get screenshots of the model, we would have the official spikeyness!!
Unfortunately from what I can see of the screenshots from the game, it still somehow just looks like a mass of hair xD although with a more consistent shape so at least there's that! xD
There is a figure for him and Midoriya you could look at though! I personally didn't think they were close enough to the anime hair placement so I didn't use it as a reference but it might come in handy for someone else! :)

It's like a Jareth but in a lacefront, so you'll have a really nice hairline since his shows, but also a good spiking wig. Hope that helps!

Thank you for this video :) But I have a question : after you did this separated spikes step, how do you proceed ? Cuting first ? Apply some hairspray first ? When do you remove elastics ?

I want to do my oc and his hair has 1 medium spike 1 big spike and 1 medium spike in that order on the side of his head but he also has bangs kinda like todoroki how would I make those spikes say up?

Don't feel dumb! Most cosplay wigs are synthetic so it can be hard to know what you can and can't use on them, since it's not human hair ^^
All that being said, yes I use hairspray! But I make sure that whatever hairspray I use doesn't have any oil in it, since oil can't be absorbed by the plastic fibers. I personally use got2b glued freeze spray, but any hairspray with "extra hold" should work well!

I generally order from Arda wigs or Epic cosplay since I know their quality is consistent. Arda has a silky line, though I think its been getting smaller and smaller over the years. The classic line is still good, but you may need to use Mane & Tail or a silicone spray to try to stop it from tangling during use if its a long wig. Epic has much softer fibers all around, but again if its a long wig, I highly recomended spraying it down before use so its easier to brush out after wearing. I hope that helps!

I get my wig heads from Joanns, but I know you can get them at Hobby Lobby or off Amazon too. And I personally use got2b glued freeze spray for styling my wigs.
Do you use anything to keep the spikes in place, like gel or hair spray? and if not what's the best way of keeping it spiky throughout the day?
After styling I usually spray the whole wig down with 3-4 coats of the got2b glued freeze spray. After I'm done wearing it for the day I'll then touch it up with some more hairspray but it should only ever need a small touch up after every use

How would you spike a long wig? I'm scared of cutting the hair wrong and messing it up
Depending how long the spike has to be and at what angle it is, you may need to use a support such as foam core/wire. If the spikes that are long, angle mostly downwards, you can probably spike them with just lots of teasing and hairspray.

I got an Apollo in white from Epic Cosplay wigs and dyed it green using Rit Dyemore in peacock green :) (although I think they have some greens that might work if you don't want to dye it yourself!)

What type of brush is best for teasing?
I personally use a teasing brush that has soft bristles. That or a fine tooth comb should do the trick!

Hey there! For that wig I'd use either a Hansel from Arda Wigs or an Apollo from EpicCosplay in white as a base.

Cutting a wig is always nerve wracking the first few times you do it, but once you learn methods to make it look good its not so bad!

I use my camera tripod handle as a stand. If need to keep it on a table, maybe some strong packing tape would work? Otherwise they do make wig stand holders for desks that clip right on!

So, this is a really stupid question, but, does the wig head matter for styling? For example, if you have a feminine wig head, will the styling of the wig look different than if you styled it on a masculine wig head? Thank you so much if you reply!! ❤️
Not a stupid question! But short answer: not really.
Long answer: I personally use the male wig heads to style things because they are closer to an actual human head in size, so I can guess more accurately where things will fall on people's faces in general when styling things for other people. Since I started using the male heads, I now just use them when styling my own stuff as well, since the female heads are slightly titled and it bothers me now since I'm used to the male heads haha. But back before I used the male heads, I just styled the bangs or front laying hairs on my own head before styling the rest on the female head and everything turned out just fine! So no need to drop $10 dollars on a male head unless you plan on doing a ton of wig styling or you just really really want one. I personally love mine since they have the ears and better facial features to line things up with, but it's really up to personal preference! :)

What about when they don't have hairspray
You can always do just teasing, however, the final results are going to always be a bit more on the messier side (which isn't always a bad thing). That being said without hairspray, your style could fall out faster over time so I highly recommend if you don't have any, picking up a bottle somewhere
