로마를 대표하는 영화, 오드리 헵번과 그레고리 팩 주연의 ‘로마의 휴일'을 꿈꾸던, 그 시절의 추억을 더듬어, 새롭게 로마를 천천히 둘러보기로 했다.‘로마의 휴일'에서, 오드리 헵번이 아이스크림을 맛있게 먹던, 명장면이 탄생한 바로 그 스페인 계단에 서서, 로마의 휴일을 추억 속에서 즐겨 보기로 했다. 스페인 계단은, 17C 교황청 스페인 대사가 개인산을 남겨, 언덕 위 삼위일체 교회와 언덕 아래 스페인 광장을 잇는, 21M의 높이의 136개 계단을 만들어서, 탄생하게 되었다.
이곳 삼위일체 교회 언덕에서, 아래로 바라보는 스페인 계단과 광장의 풍경은 참으로 이색적이고 경이롭다. 산타 마리아 성당 앞에는, 이집트에서 가져
온, 코끼리 오벨리스크 동상이 특이한 모습이다. 고대 최고의 건축기술과 예술의 경이로움을 함께 볼 수 있는 판테온은, 신전이자 무덤이다. 이곳엔 라파엘로 화가 및 초대 국왕 에마누엘레 2세 등, 고대 및 중세의 주요 인물들의 무덤이 있는 곳이다. 고대 콘크리트로 만들어진 판테온은, 그 끝점에 원형의 빈 공간으로 만들어진, 아치형의 특별한 지붕 구조이다.
판테온 인근 골목은, 맛있는 빵과 커피를 파는 카페와 이탈리아 정통 젤라또를 파는 가게들이 있어서, 간단히 점심을 먹기엔 좋은 장소들이었다. 바티칸은 전 세계에서 몰려든 관광객과 천주교 신자들의 방문 행렬로 항상 붐빈다. 바티칸에 입장하기 위해서는 사전에 예약을 해야 하고, 가능한 현지의 단체 여행을 가는 것을 추천한다. 바티칸은 종교적인 목적의 방문 이외에도, 수많은 유명 미술 작품들을 보기 위해, 전 세계에서 많은 사람들이 찾아온다.
중세 시대에는 대부분의 미술 활동들이 종교와 연관된 작품들이어서 종교 색이 진하다. 바티칸의 건축.동상.그림 등 모든 것들은 그 역사만큼이나 참으로 화려하고 찬란하다. 성 베드로 성당은 예수의 제자 성 베드로의 무덤 위에 지어진 성당으로 유명하다. 아침 일찍 로마 시내 관광을 시작으로, 오후에는 바티칸 투어까지 8시간 이상을 계속 걷다 보니, 체력도 힘들고 배고픔에 허기가 졌다. 전날 맥주 한잔하면서 잠깐 들러 본 맛집들을 다시 돌면서, 배고픔과 술고픔을 채우기 위해 이탈리아 피자와 파스타 그리고 시원한 맥주와 함께 로마의 마지막 밤을 하얗게 수 놓았다.

I decided to take a leisurely tour of Rome, reminiscing about the times when I dreamed of watching the movie representing Rome, 'Roman Holiday' starring Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Pack. In 'Roman Holiday', Audrey Hepburn enjoys delicious ice cream. Standing on the very Spanish Steps where the famous scene was born, I decided to enjoy my Roman holiday in my memories. The Spanish Steps were created in the 17th century when the Spanish ambassador to the Vatican left a personal mountain and built 136 steps with a height of 21 meters connecting the Holy Trinity Church on the hill and the Plaza de España at the bottom of the hill.
Here, from the hill of the Trinity Church, the view of the Spanish Steps and the square below is truly unique and amazing. In front of Santa Maria Cathedral, brought from Egypt, the elephant obelisk statue has an unusual appearance. The Pantheon is both a temple and a tomb where you can see the greatest architectural techniques and wonders of art in ancient times. This is where the tombs of major ancient and medieval figures, including painter Raphael and the first King Emanuele II, are located. The Pantheon, made of ancient concrete, is a special arched roof structure with circular voids at its ends.
The alley near Pantheon was a good place to have a quick lunch, as there were cafes selling delicious bread and coffee, and shops selling authentic Italian gelato.
The Vatican is always crowded with tourists and Catholics from all over the world. To enter the Vatican, you must make a reservation in advance, and it is recommended to go on a local group tour if possible. In addition to visiting the Vatican for religious purposes, many people come from all over the world to see the many famous works of art.
In the Middle Ages, most artistic activities were related to religion, so they had a strong religious flavor. Everything in the Vatican, including its architecture, statues, and paintings, is truly as splendid and brilliant as its history. St. Peter's Cathedral is famous for being built over the tomb of St. Peter, a disciple of Jesus. Starting with a city tour of Rome early in the morning and continuing to walk for more than 8 hours until the Vatican tour in the afternoon, my stamina was exhausted and I was starving. I planned to spent my last night in Rome with Italian pizza, pasta, and cold beer to satisfy my hunger. I revisited the restaurants I stopped by while having a beer the day before.
