- Oliver Cromwell imposed a Union on Scotland way before 1707. During the War of the Three Kingdoms, Cromwell left General Monk to do his work in Scotland as Cromwell himself headed off, chasing Charles II to the Battle of Worcester. Dundee was about to have it's worst day ever.

Scotland History Tours is here for people who want to learn about Scottish history and get ideas for Scottish history tours. I try to make videos which tell you tales from Scotland's past and give you information about key dates in Scottish history and historical places to visit in Scotland. Great video Bruce. As a Texan I can understand the tragedy associated with the alamo, especially being born in San Antonio where it resides. What a dark time for the people of Dundee. Learning one thing from my nation's history is that wars are never civil but they are always tragic. If there is any solicit to be had, it should be teaching these things, gleaning what we can, remembering those who fell and hopefully never repeating the same mistakes.
I've heard it said: 'History repeats itself. It has to, no-one listens.'

Thank you for this. I am from St Andrews and I had never heard of this before although I had hear about what Cromwell did in Drogheda in Ireland. You are filling in many gaps in my Scottish history knowledge.
Thank you, Bruce. My ancestor was transported to the New World after being captured by Cromwell's forces after Worcester. I've walked past that gate a few times, without much of a thought, thanks for another educational and entertaining video. Sharing with our American group of descendants of Scots Prisoners of War.

Great video, over in the US we have Dundee, Kentucky the "Home of the Goat." The goat weathervane atop the old masonic lodge from the mid 1800's is the only surviving of its type in the US made in Dundee Scotland....

Being born in Fife I was always told about the sacking of St Andrews and the destruction of the cathedral by Cromwell’s forces.
I didn’t know of this particular event so thank you for educating me.
Cromwell hadn't been born when St Andrews Cathedral was ransacked and destroyed by Scots Protestants (search Bruce's other videos - possibly the John Knox and Cardinal Beaton ones?).

Thank-you for this - my many times great-grandparents were in Dundee when it was sacked and they somehow survived, soon after moving to an area near Aberdeen. I can't imagine the horrors they experienced and saw on this day.

Sounds nice. When I went through to Dundee to film this I met up with an old pal and he cracked open a bottle of Balvennie Caribean Cask which we finished in his sunny back garden before he poured me into a taxi for the train station.

It confounds me, that Dunbar has streets named after Cromwell, for all the suffering they deployed after the battle, I never knew about this battle, I'll bet there is nothing name Cromwell in Dundee. Incidentally a new housing estate, in the Pinkie area of Musselburgh is named after the Duke of Somerset, are these people who sanction such street names, are they total absolute idiots for not respecting the Scottish war dead, and during that rough wooing many ordinary Scots died at the Battle of Pinkie.

The 16th and 17th wars in Europe had a strong religious element and people would often identify with their religion and not their state. Their faith was a vital part of their lives..often the most important part. They were prepared to die for it... and kill for it.
A Protestant " English " army would attract support from Protestants, rather like a Catholic pretender would get automatic support in Ireland.
You judge history through through a revisionist modern lens. People were different then. They thought, believed and acted differently than people do today. Pearl Clutch if you want, but it's a niaive position to take.

@@mccombe25 The definition of Genocide is "the deliberate killing of a large number of people from a particular nation or ethnic group with the aim of destroying that nation or group" The fact that Scotland exists as do the Scots and even your comment goes to show that that genocide was an utter failure.

Great video Brucie Boy! Being a proud Dundonian, now resident in Canada, I enjoyed your account of Monck's siege of Dundee. It was devastating for the town and the looting of the gold reserve was a huge financial loss to the nation. You forgot to tell the part about the ships, laden with the looted gold, sinking as they left the Firth of Tay - still not rediscovered. Nor how afterwards Monck switched sides and went on to become Keeper of the Tower of London under Charles II. Maybe Monck should be the subject of his own video to show what a tyrant he really was. I believe my ancestors of Clan Ross were captured and sent to Maryland for opposing Cromwell after this battle. That branch of the family has been in the states a long time. Great video again Bruce.

I'm pretty sure that would go to Berwick upon Tweed and its sacking by Long Shanks: the last building standing was the warehouse of the Flemish merchants (my ancestors).
Yes Berwick upon Tweed was in Scotland at that time (and for much of subsequent history)🤔🏴

We have a statue of Cromwell in my town. There’s a great book called; The Vote: how it was won and how it was undermined.
The man is not as Black as Painted,Charles was responsible for far more deaths,due to his capricious temprement.

My goodness, Bruce, as a Scots Protestant born in Fife, growing up in Glasgow and even working for almost a year in Dundee in my first professional job many moons ago .. and knowing a huge amount of history.. ( or so I thought) the gory details of this episode has escaped me. I asume it is all true and helps explain why Dundee is a hot bed of Scottish Nationalism. Dundee was indeed sacked, but the rules of war in those days were if you didnt surrender then anything goes.
Also the assault took place only when a spy inside the city confirmed that the soldiers inside were drunk.
War was brutal in those days and scottish soldiers were as violent as any english one.

Great video... I'm from Dundee, you could have mentioned the "chibmark" left still on Broughty Ferry castle by one of Monck's cannon. Or the fact/legend? that all of that gold that was plundered, ended up lost in at the mouth of the Tay due to a storm sinking all the ships.

Intrigued. Could you explain further? (e.g., What Jacobite rebellion was this? I only know about the '45 when the majority of the city Council was pro-Government when the Jacobite Army occupied the city. Also, there was a "Dundee" connection in the 1689 Rebellion but was that only because John Graeme, Viscount Dundee, was one of the leaders - but Dundee locked its gates when he came recruiting. Could it have been for the 1715 or 1719 ones ...?)
@@DH.2016 If you know who Viscount Dundee is then surely you know that he and his men started the Jacobite risings in Scotland in 1689 on the top of 'The Law' hill in the City of Dundee ...?? Dundee is literally the birthplace of Jacobitism .
Also in 1745 the ''City Council'' does not represent the people of Dundee and surrounding areas ..... It was a 'Rebellion' after all

A man up on a hill with some followers is hardly an entire city and the city did lock its gates when he tried to get in. The Covenanters and Monck's army were Protestant. Most Scots were Protestants (and probably still are) so why would the ordinary people of Dundee city want a Catholic monarch? History shows that there were hardly ticker tape parades or men flocking to the Jacobite banners because most Scots throughout the Jacobite rebellions wanted nothing to do with them. Until you can offer real evidence that the majority of the non-council residents were not pro-Government, your wee notion that "Dundee became a Jacobite town" doesn't sound logical or match the historical evidence.

If there’s anyone bothering to read this ‘exchange’ between us the best course of action is to read as many books by as many authors about the 4 major Jacobite Rebellions in 1689, 1715, 1719 and 1745 and make up your own mind. Religion is certainly a factor in the downfall of the Stuarts but not the only one. It’s also the story of men who had wealth, power and privilege, lost it and wanted it back, those who had the power and were in danger of losing it, and both factions forcing or conning the common man into supporting them.
Could you tell the story about the time one of Cromwells ships that was filled with treasure and sank in the Tay, many of the country's wealthy gentry including the Viscount of Newburgh and the earls of Tweeddale and Buccleuch had stored their most prized possessions in Dundee because it was still a walled City and was regarded as one of the most secure places in Scotland the treasure still sits at the bottom of the river to this day, I'd love to hear you tell this story mate
Not for the first time or the last did the English break a vow of mercy. Pretty Brutal times. My heart cries for them and how they suffered in the cause of of a greedy excessively vain Kingdom. My own tribal ancestor Gilnockie (Jonny Armstrong) was lured to his death by his own King James V of Scotland. Commemorated in The Ballad of Jonny Armstrong.
