    What a fantastic boat. Checks all the boxes, including that it's not a ketch rig which was one of my main turn-offs to the Amels. Now I just have to win the lottery.😃

    My dear SV Tonic_Boatwives, how surprised I was to see my name on the intro! Really wasn't expecting that! Thank you very much, it made me feel a bit of a part of your channel, believe me! Made my day, I'll be all smiles today :)
    The more I see videos on the Amel 50, the more I'm sure this is the one to go in comfort and safety whare I want - in my case, Patagonia. Not to exclude the rest of the world, of course. There's a couple from Swiss that'll be going there next summer on their Amel 50, one of the first ones. I wish they place some videos of this trip.
    Unfortunately the wind and seas were resting when you were there so you couldn't show us it's behaviour on heavier conditions. Maybe on another opportunity! Anyway, always a pleasure to learn and see more on my dream boat. And specially from you, whose narrative is objective and well focused on things that matter. Love your channel! See you on the next video!
    My best!

      Thank you, for your kind words. I love Amel they are definitely in the top 3 or 4 sailboats of their class, it also helps that the team at Amel are so friendly and open. I have not had a good welcome at oyster, very frosty in fact. Wait until you see the Allures 51.9, I was out on her last week, very nice boat. We just want to thank you for watching and being part of our TH-cam family there are a few of you guys that make this a pleasure to make videos for, so thank you for watching.

    It's been 10 years since I discovered Amel and began dreaming of owning one of their vessels. This year I officially become a millionaire. Within the next 5-10 years I'm on track to buy my first Amel and sail a few months out of the year. Their design philosophy, safety, comfort and aesthetics have wiped out the competition for me even though I keep looking over the years at other vessels. It will be worth the wait, these boats just keep getting nicer and nicer over the years. Time to get back to work so in 5-10 years I can make this a reality.

    It depends on a few factors if a boat can be sailed by a single helmsman. Once at sea, well that's no big deal. However, in the harbour changes are reverse. So going singlehand on a 50 feeter is not that much trouble only most insurance coys will think differently.

    "Is the AMEL 50, The only True single-handed blue water sailboat?"
    It's very probably the 50 footer most single-mindedly designed to serve that specific role. They've been doing this kind of boats forever. Kinks are worked out.
    It's still a big, big boat with lots of stuff onboard, though. Big forces, and can quickly get tricky if any of the automation/electrics develop an issue. Smaller boats have an a priori advantage for singlehanding, at least for extended single handing, which is hard to overcome for any boat this big and complex.

    • @SVTONICBoatWives
      @SVTONICBoatWives  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think for ease of sailing she is the best in her class, the team at Amel know what their doing and as you say they have been doing it for a long time. As with any boat things can go wrong fast in any condition, and that is where the skill of the skipper comes into play.

    The editing could be better. There are several times when all the sudden you are just looking at something with no frame of reference where it is at all. Such as looking at a storage area under the floor board all the sudden with no clue where it is at, or all the sudden looking at some bunk beds again with no relation where in the boat you are.
    On the plus side, there were a lot of details given about this boat that one typically does not find on other videos. And some good questions asked. With some good answers to go along with those questions. More experienced people could have guessed the answers and likely reasons, but it is nice to have confirmed. And more importantly tons of people likely will not have known the reasons.

    Great Boat tour, with lots of good features, nice to see a return to Sloop Rig. I think the 50ft is the best Boat they make tbh. Wrong about pita double rudders though, apart from snagging Lobster and crab pots they're really vulnerable, and wide beam means very little heeling angle, so a single Rudder an, and does, work very well indeed- See Dufour plus others, though Dufour Draft is about 8 inches too deep for a Shoal Draft. I good news, I can get what I need with an Island Packet IP 439, fully laden with water and Fuel, Provisions, etc, it has a 5ft Draft, but lightened, that can be reduced by up to 8 inches, so 4ft 4 inch Draft I I need to get in, or out of special places, such as up to Budapest, through the Erie Canal, ICW, etc. plus a skeg protected single rudder, and still with excellent tracking due to the long keel with Lead ballast. The new generation IP 420 Motor Sailer is looking very interesting as well, though depending on Layout options being finalised, I think for me, the IP 439 will stay my best option. The 1200 amps of AGM House Bank batteries, possible, may actually be the clincher, as staying above 80% Capacity to get 3500 Cycles Flat lining, could well have them delivering 30 plus years service life, as 240 amps to use before recharging, from Solar, or high output Alternator, shouldn't be difficult to remain within that 80% state of Charge limit. Like with Lithium, going below a cutoff point, hammsrs the recharge Cycles, but Lead loves getting to 100% charge , does Lifepo4? you can set phone and tablet Lithium battery charge limits to 85% to significantly increase the battery life , is that true of Lifepo4 Batteries too ? Maybe, and perhaps likely, They don't like Fast Charging or Wireless charging either. too much still to know, about Lithium for me. I've seen IPhone battery capacity reduced to 80% in 6 months, due to not being treated right, and AGM batteries pretty much killed in 6 months because someone thought the words Deep Discharge, meant Deep Discharging them didn't do any harm to the batteries. We need much better batteries than anything presently on the market imho. Thanks again for the look around the Amel 50, a nice Med Boat for some. Best Wishes and Fair Winds. Bob. 👍⛵️✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️

      @ABC gang plus the Island Packet sails like a brick.

    • @brownnoise357
      @brownnoise357 ปีที่แล้ว

      @ABC gang Engine access in the 439 is fine via the utility room, plus enough battery space to make a generator unnecessary. Full !eel tracks eautifully on Ocean Rossington, such that a Wind Vane is unnecessary for course maintaining, and most of the time the Auto pilot can be turned off, and keeping an eye on the compass is all that is beeded. Not having a Racing Sailboat Deep Draft, is a rather large advantage for Cruisers, Though Such good tracking can be as much of a disadvantage for low speed manouvering as having twin rudders, but a good variable pressure bowthrister does solve that The direct drive prop, is not just directing the water flow over the rudder, both have a significant amount of protection provided by the Skeg, and the long keel, so only needs to be completed with a Rope Cutter - so it is safe to go Cruising along places like the East Coast of the USA, and Lobster Pot City that is the waters of Maine. What Island Pa ,etc has done, is cure every Flaw, and solved every problem that didn't work for me as compromises that need to be in my Favour with for example, my last Sailboat, a Long Keel Shallow Draft Endeavour 32. Which sailed like a dream, but ease of access getting aboard, Classic Mast with Lazy jacks and Stackpack, and living on it, highly problematical for someone disabled like myself. if not disabled, and able to still single hand one, tbh, the IP 349 would be perfect. But for I surance purposes now, to get a boat where I want ine to be, it has to have at least 6 very comfortable Berths, two heads and Showers and an excellent secure Galley that can be used in a seaway so the 439 fits the bill. If I were to have an Amel 50, most places I want to go to, I couldn't get to, plus to the Skipper and delivery Crew, I'd have to add diving equipment, compressor, and a Diver to clear ropes off the twin rudders, and travel slow enough to make sure the damned things don't get ripped off. So it is really No Contest isn't it ? 🤔

    • @brownnoise357
      @brownnoise357 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @ABC gang Buy a secondhand Island Packet, like with any other Secondhand Boat, and you start with Compomises that lean towards compromises that are favourable to previous owners, and which can be extremely expensive to redo to give you the Compromises that are aligned with your specific needs. Sadly this can mean a refurbishment and upgrade Job, that with the purchase of the boat itself, can greatly exceed the purchase price of a new boat. Island Packet do offer a full Refurbishment and Modernisation option, for owners of all Prior Island Packet models, which itself is a major plus. Compromises to suit, are rather impressive from the list of available New Construction Options, and mostly can be accommodated without special customisation options , but can drive up the price a bit, Safety Rails being Stainless steel tubes, rather than wires is one example, for connecting the Pushpit to the .pulpit, for disabled me, are worth having for example, plus they now do a solid Dodger option, plus a solid Rear Arch with Solar Panel and Dinghy Davits as an option as well, with Sun and Rain protection Bimini Between them, with drop down screens available as well. Sails I want for the Silplan I need - Sloop Rigged with in Mast Furling, Genoa Furling, and Furling Reaching Code Zero, I can either specify, or accept the standard Sails for that Specification, to have as a spare suit of Suils, and order a Custom specification after, as the Main Suit. The Sailmaker they use, does make the type of Sails I am looking for, and if the price is competitive, I'll add onto the order a full set of spare Sails. Result, a very comfortable Seaworthy Sailboat, that can get me to anywhere I want to go in the World, for a not insignificant saving over an Amel. Comfort Afloat is very important, Luxury is not. From a safety perspective I've Fled from too many Storms to Shelter in well protecting Small Bays, and having say a 7ft water Depth at low tide to Anchor in, demands a shallow enough Draft, so the Storm Swell isn't bouncing your keel on the bottom, which ruins attempts at sleeping. That is a Cruising Feature I am not prepared to lose access to willingly. Many small Bays also have Storm swell shelter, and the Swell passes them by, and some are that calm, you can leave the boat at Anchor, dinghy ashore say 200 yes, beach the Dinghy, and head for a Pub Meal and some drinks, just behind the Beach. There are two like that local to me that I've used, one having two Pubs and a Cafe that does nice Breakfasts. the Other a single Pub. Win/Win either way. A rather different emphasis over Racing Sailbots isn't it ? I ditched all ideas about going Sailboat Racing, after the 1979 Fastnet Race Tragedy, and have stuck with Cruising ever Since, and will not tolerate Racing aspects on a Sailboat, that run Counter to Cruising necessities. If someone else wants fun Sailboat Racing, good luck to them, just don't screw up what us Cruisers need, which is happening far too much in recent years imho. When caught in the really bad stuff Offshore, an Old Amel Can Cope, a New Island Packet can cope, but I have legitimate doubts about New Amel. I know, I'm bloody fussy and know what I need/want, which is probably why Elite Yachts gave me the brush off, by sending me a link to their 50ft new model, knowing I wouldn't be interested. They won't be getting an order. Best Wishes and Fair Winds. Bob. 👍⛵️✨️✨️✨️

    • @deerfootnz
      @deerfootnz ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @ABC gang the two best boats I ever sailed for easy steering and self steering were fin & spade. It's about hull shape not appendages. A short beamy boat will never sail in straight lines. On my current boat engaging the autopilot requires two steps. I have often neglected to pull the lever to disengage the hydraulics - the second step - only to find half an hour later that the boat has been sailing on course without the autopilot! The boat is a lightweight fin and spade, but it's relatively narrow. After 200,000 miles of deliveries on all sorts of vessels.... I dislike island packets immensely. They have very good build quality, but they are not sailing boats. They are very roughly boat shaped apartments. The sailing performance is appalling and at best they are motorsailors. Good luck trying to sail out of trouble in light winds if the engine doesn't work.

    Are they or will they incorporate AI technology into the boat to assist even more in navigation and maintenance and overall make the passengers life more enjoyable?
    Is their a list of all the options available? Cost of options?
    How does all the automation in the electric winches and furlers hold up to the sea salt air from sailing? Do they need to be regularly maintained? Or a quick wipe down?
    Is their an option to install electrical outlets and anything else to be compatible to United States devices without required adapters?
    What’s the average time it takes from making an order to the Amel 50 being finish and ready for delivery? How many months? What’s the wait time if their is any?

    Very nice overall summary. I understand the "modern" concept throughout but my reservation is this. What happens when it all hits the fan , and by that I mean a loss of power for any reason? This boat is so heavily dependent on electricity it's frightening. If all is working tip top it's not an issue. Let's say you are struck by lightening 500 miles offshore? Any loss of power makes this a very heavy raft for one person. So my point is this. Manual back ups and practical ones. Apart from that she is a beautiful sailboat and probably one of the best on the market. Thank you for the tour.

      All winches, windlass etc have manual backups and if the skipper is any good they will know where he or she is as I would hope has kept a paper chart record and a detailed log book. So getting out of trouble and getting to land should not be a problem. Yes she is a fantastic sailboat and one of the best on the market for her class. Thank you for watching

    • @farrellko
      @farrellko ปีที่แล้ว +4

      As with the other reply you have manual backups. If the power goes or a furler fails just attach a handle, ease the sheet and wind in the sail - Not that hard. On the main you drop the motor and disconnect the drive, then use a handle to furl. It's no more difficult than any other manual boat where you need to do the work at the mast or foredeck.

    • @paulnorman8274
      @paulnorman8274 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@farrellko But if the power does not "go", electric motors have the torque to jam stuff pretty darned tight. You don't have the feel you do when working controls with muscle power. Also, a 50 footer, especially a big 50 like this, is not an easy boat to singlehand in rapidly deteriorating conditions anyway, absent all the automation.
      Amel has been doing exactly these sorts of boats, for exactly the sort of buyers looking for them (shorthanded, mostly couples, no longer wanting to "go camping" around the world...) longer than anyone, though. If you "need" the space and size and comforts and aids, I'd trust them to have it sorted out, more than anyone else (HR perhaps being the closest). And it's not just the winches. "Comfort" stuff tends to interact unpredictably as well, when lots and lots of it is installed in enclosed spaces in tropical heat for example..... So unless you cherish being a guinea pig, going with a builder who has plenty of practical experience with this sort of boats, is never a bad idea. And Amel is certainly such a builder.
      Personally, if I had to singlehand, or even double hand around the world, I'd do it in a smaller boat. Or, in a boat this big, or even bigger, but a trawler.....

      I dont get it. Mechanical steering and I have never seen a winch or a furling system without a manual option. The only risk I see is the transom which is hydraulic and may have a manual option together with a bulkhead anyway. If thats open 500m offshore in a storm your asking for trouble anyway. By law in Europe there has to be a grounding system for lightening strikes. The manual systems may not be practical but in an emergency will get you home, a bit like temporary wheels for cars.

    I would take a Kraken or an older Amel over this boat. I hate the double rudder. More things to break, rudder is not protected forward by the keel. Are the double rudders skegged or are they spade rudders? How far out of the water are the rudders when you are heeling. In other words if you lose your port rudder, can you heel to port and still use the starboard rudder? Most "beamy" boats you can't or their effectiveness in controlling the boat is greatly decreased. The double rudder alone would make this a no go for bluewater to me. To much to go wrong with a double rudder system. Same reason I dislike the double wheeled boats. More stuff to maintain and more stuff to go wrong.

    • @wckoek
      @wckoek 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I hate twin rudders as well, not for bluewater reasons, but they are difficult to dock since they only react effectively on higher speeds.
      Unfortunately since mid 2000's twin rudders are the norm for most newer boats.

      I sailed sailed single handed. I’ve never sailed a double rudder boat. I’ve never considered what you just said. What you’ve just said does comport with my belief that the boat should be as easy to sell as possible I would not be quite dead on a boat with twin Helms. For the same reason. Plus, you can make some sort of a case for twin Rutters but unless you’re in a race, you can’t make a case for twin helms. 99% of the time you spend sailing if you’re a cruiser, you are on automatic pilot. you’re not even sailing. You trim the sales and your sit around and read a book or watch your iPad or fix something that broke.

    Twin unprotected rudders I believe

    • @deerfootnz
      @deerfootnz ปีที่แล้ว

      Twin rudders - only necessary because they decided to compromise the hull form to fit more stuff in the back. Consequently when heeled not only would a single rudder be quickly rendered inneffective, but the same effect makes the boat go now down, ass up and cranky to steer. And difficult to handle in the marina with reduced prop wash. If you want more room in the boat, go longer, not wider.

    • @SVTONICBoatWives

      @@SVTONICBoatWives It's easier to design and construct a spade rudder to be strong enough than a skegged rudder. Skegs are difficult to build and often much weaker than they appear. I still don't like twin rudders as they are a necessary consequence of poor hull design.
