“Darkstalkers is the Futurama to Street Fighter’s The Simpsons”. I like that analogy, implying that Street Fighter was genre defining and near perfect back in the day, but has gone on too long and is now a shell of its former self, and Darkstalkers is lesser known but much better made and loved by its hardcore fans...and that it is LONG overdue for a revival and return!

I worked on the the Darkstalkers series back in the day at Capcom. The reason the second installment was called Darkstalkers Revenge instead of Darkstalkers 2 was that it was felt it wasn't a true sequel, it was more of an upgrade. The revenge component was also to make sound like an old horror movie, (i.e. Frankensteins' revenge or Revenge of the Creature) which provided much of the inspiration for the game.
I just call her Lei-Lei. I have mostly played the arcade games through emulation, so I am more use to her actual name. Doesn't make sense that they changed her name to something more Japanese from a Chinese on anyway. Most the names that they changed in the series for whatever reason tended to end up more difficult to pronounce than the Japanese games.
Hahahah, excellent reason for Sony giving more 3D than 2D chops to the PSX. Night Warriors convinced me that I had nothing to gain from the PSX, keeping me a big Saturn fan. Panzer Dragoon helped too, but I definitely put many more hours into Night Warriors than any other game in that period!
Despite its console history, Vampire Hunter is a game I absolutely love!( Please do more videos!!!) Its visuals, gameplay and music was to me, the Capcom renaissance as this, Xmen and Alpha 2 were just flexing Capcoms already impressive muscles and kept us fans wanting more.
My favorite fighting games series! Art direction, graphics, and it's soundtracks are just top notch. That said, I'm glad Capcom has left well enough alone.
I had Vampire Hunter on my Sega Saturn back in the day and absolutely loved it. I had Street Fighter Zero (Alpha) too, but played Vampire Hunter way more often. It was that damn good. I wish that I had never sold my Saturn game collection for next to nothing back then, as since I have been collecting for it again the games have become scarily expensive.

I mean, we know he hates being corrected when it comes to names but bloody 'ell, that one's not even anywhere as tough as, say Ryu (rhee-ooh), Hiryu (he-rhee-ooh), or Daisuke (Dys-keh)! but in all seriousness, thanks for covering one of the Big C's most underrated cult masterpieces in their whole catalog. cheers from The Bronx!
When this came out, Capcom would release details they were making The Darkstalkers OVA! Though some parts were much more impressive than others, it was welcomed over the US tv show...though it still used their voice actors( which many of them were FANTASTIC!)

The most confusing difference between the Japanese version Vampire Hunter and the American Night Warriors was that while both kept the same endings from Vampire/Darkstalkers, after the endings the game scrolls over a large piece of artwork of the character (by amazing artist, Bengus) Vampire Hunter also features scrolling text along with the piece of artwork, while no translation of that text is in the American Night Warriors--just the piece of artwork. I always wondered by that was the case and what exactly was said in that text!!
Fantastic coverage of this unique series. Vampire Savior is a very complicated / bizarre adventure. Just a bummer it's been on ice for years. When the series itself grew so much back then. It's odd how the Saturn was more capable, even though it was struggling. And the PlayStation was pushed to do more 3D over 2D. But the Saturn could actually deliver both, and more. Darkstalkers is a fascinating series to me, because it's revisions made it more advanced. The technique of each character added to their personalities, and energy. Excellent coverage as always. Cannot wait to see more of this series

The Darkstalkers: The Night Warriors port was outsourced to a European company called Psygnosis. This is similar to what happened with the PSX port of X-Men CotA. Capcom had trouble porting it, and put the port on the back burner, then Probe Entertainment obtained the source code, and after they delayed it for over a year (Probe planned to release CotA in early 1997) they FINALLY released it in February 1998, almost THREE YEARS after the Saturn version by Rutubo Games. To put this in perspective, the Fighters Edge line would start in the US just a few months later with X-Men vs. SF. X-Men vs. SF had already been out on Saturn in Japan for four months by then. Should also be noted that Capcom's development of the port was at about 65-70% done. Probe literally just sat on that incomplete version with the FMV rendered endings and INCOMPLETE endings at that, and at least half of the animation frames missing, then decided that would be acceptable to release in 1998 of all years 😂👏🏾

I'm pretty sure Jiang Shi are Zombies. There is a documentary explaining how chinese transported corpses "enchaning" them and making they hop thru great distances. In fact they did it, but it was just a strange way of transport corpses and legends to make people afraid and hide their "transportation issues"

Even though I suck at these games, I'd love for Dark Stalkers to make a full return. Not as guest characters for another game nor a crossover. A full fledged Dark Stalkers game.
I dont really got much to say on this but I do like Darkstalkers Revenge. And although its a upgrade rather than a true sequel what keeps it fresh is the characters default colors, new roster UI when selecting your fighter, a couple new characters plus two old characters now becoming playable, different variations of the stages, and new revisions of the character theme songs that also went on to become fan favorite tracks. I say that all makes this worth playing. Also fun fact: Hsien-Ko is called Lei lei in Japan (If im correct, I looked up that her name in Japan not only is pronounced Rei-Rei due to the Japanese tongue, but its also supposed to be pronounced that way unless im wrong. You do you Top Hat shes just fiction just like Ryu XD).
The darkstalker game series is phenomenal CAPCOM needs to bring them back and they should add the Red Earth characters in the roster now that would be an insane freaking fighting game.

10:30 Statement for Capcom is very Japanese. They couldn't come out and say that PS1 was a piece of rubbish for 2D games - had to carefully craft a statement to allow Sony to save face.
One of the best 2D fighters on Saturn period. No RAM cart support yet, but about 95% arcade perfect regardless. Vampire Savior on Saturn is the best port of all games Capcom did on Saturn (its not only flat out better than the Arcade, its also better than DC and PS2) but I think I prefer the mechanics of Hunter. Its funny, I never realized the first game was ported at a later date. But I generally ignored Playstation ports for good reason.
If they don't want to do another fighting game, they should do what MK did with Shaolin Monks, but with Donovan and Hi Sen Ko hunting monsters from Dark.Stalkers and other Capcom Games.
The main reason the first game was not released on the Saturn is, probably, because Capcom announced it with Alien vs Predator for the 32X, so with the cancellation they decided to move on to the better hardware and saving time taking the new released second game.
Darkstalkers has silky smooth gameplay and I don’t recall many cheap moments.. PSP has a really good deluxe version which I have digitally and there’s also the PS3 version which I believe features the 2nd and 3rd installments.. Cover some of the oldies next Karateka original and remake, Yie Ar Kung Fu, Karate Champ etc
I know this is crazy and wouldn't happen. BUT if these two companies were to make games that were just good projects (so in lala fantasy land). How AWESOME would it be to get X-Men vs Darkstalkers. It could be an Apology to X-men fans and a revitalization of the Darkstalkers franchise at the same time. Which is an idea i've been saying Capcom should be doing with a Street Fighter vs Darkstalkers game, as it could use the X-men/marvel or Street Fighter brand to get more eyes on a Darkstalkers focused title rather then a few cameos that don't mean much when they're buried in large rosters or rereleases of games that have already been rereleased (on previous generations of the same consoles no less. maybe next re-re-rerelease they could include PC and Nintendo alongside the PS and Xbox you know to maximize who can actually get it since building awareness was kinda the point of the last one). If there’s one thing that irks me about this entry, it’s that the default colors of the returning characters are different. Street Fighter did similar for its “sequels” and it always irked me. It was okay if it was just clothing colors, but when it was skin and hair, like with characters like Blanka and Sasquatch, it REALLY bugs me.
Audrion Irks Absolutely. Everything else is damn near perfect, a complete improvement over the mechanics of the first game, just like SF2 Turbo and Super Turbo.
you mean Victor Von Genderheim. yeah, he's the great combo of funny & cool, strong but highly mobile once you get to learn to pull his rush moves, and a noble yet quirky personality! and my fave NightWarrior is Dee, the being Donovan becomes after finally giving in to "The Thirst" (only playable in "Chaos Tower" for the Japanese PSP.)
Darkstalkers is simply the proof of concept for the Street Fighter Alpha series… All gaming companies do this when testing the waters with a new art style of a known franchise…

Battletoads, the arcade game beat em up, yo! Why didn't it gain traction? It uses the same engine as the Donkey Kong Country (SNES), but raunchier than Conker's Bad fur day.

10:30 Statement for Capcom is very Japanese. They couldn't come out and say that PS1 was a piece of rubbish for 2D games - had to carefully craft a statement to allow Sony to save face.

One of the best 2D fighters on Saturn period. No RAM cart support yet, but about 95% arcade perfect regardless. Vampire Savior on Saturn is the best port of all games Capcom did on Saturn (its not only flat out better than the Arcade, its also better than DC and PS2) but I think I prefer the mechanics of Hunter.
Its funny, I never realized the first game was ported at a later date. But I generally ignored Playstation ports for good reason.
I would love an updated collection of current consoles. The series deserves more attention.
If they don't want to do another fighting game, they should do what MK did with Shaolin Monks, but with Donovan and Hi Sen Ko hunting monsters from Dark.Stalkers and other Capcom Games.

The main reason the first game was not released on the Saturn is, probably, because Capcom announced it with Alien vs Predator for the 32X, so with the cancellation they decided to move on to the better hardware and saving time taking the new released second game.
Darkstalkers has silky smooth gameplay and I don’t recall many cheap moments.. PSP has a really good deluxe version which I have digitally and there’s also the PS3 version which I believe features the 2nd and 3rd installments..
Cover some of the oldies next Karateka original and remake, Yie Ar Kung Fu, Karate Champ etc
Series needs more content sometime like a sequel or spinoff or something...
I know this is crazy and wouldn't happen. BUT if these two companies were to make games that were just good projects (so in lala fantasy land). How AWESOME would it be to get X-Men vs Darkstalkers. It could be an Apology to X-men fans and a revitalization of the Darkstalkers franchise at the same time. Which is an idea i've been saying Capcom should be doing with a Street Fighter vs Darkstalkers game, as it could use the X-men/marvel or Street Fighter brand to get more eyes on a Darkstalkers focused title rather then a few cameos that don't mean much when they're buried in large rosters or rereleases of games that have already been rereleased (on previous generations of the same consoles no less. maybe next re-re-rerelease they could include PC and Nintendo alongside the PS and Xbox you know to maximize who can actually get it since building awareness was kinda the point of the last one).

If there’s one thing that irks me about this entry, it’s that the default colors of the returning characters are different. Street Fighter did similar for its “sequels” and it always irked me. It was okay if it was just clothing colors, but when it was skin and hair, like with characters like Blanka and Sasquatch, it REALLY bugs me.
I’m in agreement. I’m like that with every game that changes hair and skin color when costume colors are changed. Gets my noodle every time.

Audrion Irks Absolutely. Everything else is damn near perfect, a complete improvement over the mechanics of the first game, just like SF2 Turbo and Super Turbo.
I remember have a Japanese version of the first darkstakjer game before the vampire hunter was released.

you mean Victor Von Genderheim. yeah, he's the great combo of funny & cool, strong but highly mobile once you get to learn to pull his rush moves, and a noble yet quirky personality! and my fave NightWarrior is Dee, the being Donovan becomes after finally giving in to "The Thirst" (only playable in "Chaos Tower" for the Japanese PSP.)
My favorite is Lord Raptor.

Darkstalkers is simply the proof of concept for the Street Fighter Alpha series… All gaming companies do this when testing the waters with a new art style of a known franchise…

Battletoads, the arcade game beat em up, yo! Why didn't it gain traction? It uses the same engine as the Donkey Kong Country (SNES), but raunchier than Conker's Bad fur day.
This game and Panzer Dragoon Zwei made me buy a Saturn. It's brilliant.
