Born in India, raised in Oman, few years in India and back in UAE. Not sure which I can call home. I try to make wherever I live feel like home now. I can never forget the broken hearted girl I was..crying while exiting the country I called home after my family visa expired. You're right, only the ones in Middle East can understand and relate.

I think I am the only one here with the different perspective... I am an Tamilian and moved to Oman after my marriage. Those 4.5years had been an absolute heaven. I had more friends, learnt what independence really means after being in a joint family where you can't even go to a nearby shop without informing your family members. Enjoyed my life with my child and husband, travelled alot and was absolutely devastated to know that we had to come back to the same old bubble. Its been 2 years now and I just can't stop thinking about how much fun i had in muscat and just can't wait to go back to middle east. I don't mind which city its gonna be but I just wanna run away. Pls bless me☺

Hi Jovita! I used to live in Kuwait until 2005, and then moved back home to Goa. I relate so HARD with all your points, especially the Diaspora issues. As a former Gulfie kid, the whole "neither here nor there" especially when conversing in my mother tongue becomes quite prevalent. 🤣

I'm Bengali and born and raised in the UK and never left... The UK unfortunately has never felt like my home. I 100% can relate, and I also felt so much more at home in Bangladesh, India and Nepal even though my Bengali isn't great just simply because you understand people and felt understood.

Jovita your video was truly on point. After having lived in the US for nearly three decades, I was apprehensive when we had to move to India, but it was unfounded. I made wonderful friends, traveled, had house help, felt like I belonged. What can I say about the food, the jewelry, the clothes- it was magnificent. I was happy never to have to wear jeans again. My life in the US was hectic, I felt isolated, I resented being told to “ do what makes you happy” if I ever asked for an opinion or just needed clarification. I also felt like many other first generation immigrants that I truly did not belong despite being educated there, having a successful career and all the other trappings. Our stint in India is over and we are back in the US but boy do I miss waking up to tea served in bed, piping hot samosas, friends who dropped by, disasters at the hair salon, chaotic traffic, the song of the birds, the colors around me, the festivals, the markets, the warmth of people, the feeling of belonging.
I wish you great success in your new home- may you find love, happiness, good health and contentment.

not Indian or Middle Eastern but I've been following you for years for how relatable you are (and great tutorials) - but this one takes the cake! I was raised by Polish grandparents (very extremely Polish upbringing....but 60y behind so never quite Polish enough for Poland, but not American enough for Americans), and then lived in California but ages 11-13ish lived in St Lucia (Caribbean), then went back to California, then off to Norway, then East Coast USA (which might as well be a different country culturally I found out), then back to California.....never quite fit in anywhere as a "third culture kid" as they're saying these days, but finding roots somewhere is so refreshing.

Hi Jovi.... Loved your video, I too was a gulf Malayalaee... Came back to India along with my parents and settled down in Kerala 😁... It was like learning everything from scratch how Kerala works, how to get things done, taxes 😂.... Etc etc... But I love it here now.. support system is fantastic, healthy living and best of all not being treated as second citizens and freedom here ❤️❤️❤️.... Love you 💗 and your videos ... It's so much fun... 🥳

I can see that you have hidden all the pain behind the smile of yours.
I can completely relate to how you feel .
I stayed in Dubai for 35 year , I was a 3 year old kid and had to come to India due to my husband's kidney failure .it's not easy moving from place to place with a 6 year old kid not knowing anyone with even one relative to go to or someone who you can relate to .
My husband passed away this January , Now it's just me and my son .
I have my dad here and that's it .............
I too don't wear jeans , hair it fried , skin is all 50 shades of brown , and don't get me started with how my feet look .
God has been kind to us for keeping us safe and just waiting to start something for our future .

Totally agree with your point about being treated as second class citizens to all south Asian people in the Middle East. My sister lives in Qatar and I know exactly what you mean. How can they treat people like that especially when they have to rely so much from all the hard working people from India, Bangladesh , nepal etc .
Growing older I realized that living in your own country is so soul satisfying.

I’m so happy Atleast someone is talking about this now.. have been living in oman for 25 years and shifted back to india .. Even though the country has given me a great lifestyle l have realized after my school years and ones I started working there ,that how much ever we contribute to the economic growth of that country by working even harder than most ppl there even their own nationals we always get that second class citizen treatment.. it’s insane why they invite people to their country for work but always put restrictions such as noc for job changes and most employers don’t even provide that and most people are stuck at the same job forced to work under the same salary especially considering the cost of living there.. it’s just not fair.. we deserve to get atleast an equal treatment and opportunity for growth if we are contributing to the growth of an economy of a particular country… thanks alot for bringing this up 👍

On my engagement, they used up 3 cans of hairspray to keep it straight. And curled a certain way. The force is very strong with humidity in Kerala.

Loool! They used so much hair gel on my hairdo for my wedding reception that I had a migraine throughout and when I finally unrolled my hair afterwards, clumps of gel just fell out! The force is Kylo-Ren level.

You are so right about the salons in Kerala....I went to a salon long back and they popped my pimples on my forehead saying that they're whiteheads and it won't recurr, I refused and still they went ahead and I ended up having red bumps ,I still got small bumps on my forehead....No good salons where you can get a nice haircut. Went to one last year and they ruined my hair .....We need a regulatory body to monitor the services

Lived in Kuwait for 4.5 years and shifted to India before 7 months. I can totally relate what all you said. India is the best. Just being in India makes you happy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The only point that I would like to add is the greenery. I took it for granted until I landed in Kuwait. Couldn't cope with the desert everywhere. Now I am relaxed when I look outside. India rockzzz!!!

If you’re looking for comfortable fabrics for hot and humid weather, besides cotton, I highly recommend linen. It feels so lightweight, doesn’t stink when you sweat, and feels quite cool and soothing. The only downside is, it requires ironing 😅

Oh the clothing part is super relatable. I moved to Trivandrum from Bangalore for 8 months and jeans went out of my closet right away! And I had to move to cotton and linen. No more polyester for me! And of course anything beyond knee length is unbearable and sleeveless is the best for Kerala!

Omg! Word! "Where is home" is such a philosophical question now. Kuwait was home. Now feel like a nomad.
And you said "Panadol"..hahah. nice. Relate so much to all of this. But hair was so much better in Kuwait!! The moisture in Kerala is crazy for hair.
And I misssss soo misses good food! Gosh.

  • @mani_m97

This is soooooo relatable. Not with the NRI stuff but with the living in a humid place. Like picking out clothes based on the right material. I have curly hair too and I was conscious of my hair for most of my life. It's been a little bit over a year that I've started doing the curly girl method and I've fallen in love with how my hair looks. I don't even remember the last time I straightened my hair. It's still a task to manage it and most of the time I have it up in a bun.

You should move back to Bangalore , for all the struggling points you have mentioned . Bangalore will be your one stop solution be it Salon / clinic , sushi , Raman , south Asian street food or pure Japanese . We get delivery from the best place at 12 am as well . And not to mention, every one knows a lot the weather in Bangalore . We have this Japanese restaurant in Japanese embassy who serves the best sushi and ramen , we have a Korean place run by Korean couple , serves amazing food .
Kerala is always be my cute little exotic place , I have been in Kerala for countless time for vacation but Bangalore is my Daal Chawal , can’t do without it

  • @austere_kore

Glad that you finally found your balance. For Sushi I'll say, try it from other parts of India. Like you can try that in Mumbai or Kolkata. Like places with Asian restaurants run age old asian people. By that I mean the East Asians. Maybe you can finally find your Sushi. And about Salmon, well Idk. But there are a lot of smoked fishes which are Parsi dishes or Anglo Indian dishes. So may be you can other variety of smoked fish.

I miss the food , the mushakal sandwiches, pufak , KDD and laban . I do not miss the blatant racism in Kuwait . I relate to the "neither there, nor here" but i did not relate to not fitting into the gulf country, Dubai for me. I moved 3 gulf countries before we landed there, and that was where i truly grew up and enjoyed the whole process. I wouldn't be myself without that experience, it will always be home to me & where i felt myself. I don't find myself feeling like that for India or people here, i find that i think more in communal terms like caste & class over here than i did in the Gulf which is odd seeing as how racism is highly prevalent in those societies

Simple cotton salwar kameez for a comfy family routine. I never used to have chapati before, now I make them. Another thing, is high heels. I do not wear high heels anymore. Unless someone uses a car for everything, say no to heels. Only for occasions. And home delivery is so expensive here. Atleast where I live.

Totally relatable dear Jovita(gorgeous by the way 😍♥️😊) Except for the way they treat us. Yes the slight subtle differences n condescending looks are there from some... But from personal experience although they look grumpy most are quite kind-hearted, generous and intelligent as opposed to the general belief shown n perpetuated in the movies as dumb flashy individuals... Not saying they are not there but the population of the middle east is a pretty nice appreciative set of folks. The other side is that Malayalis n everyone who has worked or lived there constantly crib about the citizens, their behavior, lifestyles and how much more they are needed to be paid (some quite legit) once they stop working for them or start living( or leaving )in their countries. And though generally people are kind n good to us Nris, there's a negative impression of us that doesn't really go away. But everything else is 100%true though Kerala and India have changed for the better living wise in a lot of ways 😁😍Get better soon dear❤️💞😍

Born and brought up in UAE (now living in US) yes I can relate well to the points you mentioned. There is a lot more points i would add but thought i would just mention 1-2 most shocking realizations i felt like lack of adequate garbage disposal-management and quality of water. In India you don't have the easy garbage disposal, also the lack of good water quality (even though not everywhere). I lived in Bangalore for few years during my college years during that time and till now have to say that the water quality in UAE is far more superior (than even in the US). Of course, you can achieve a higher quality of water if you install your own water treatment system at home to further treat your water. That means more money to shell out for something that we would take for granted in the Middle East. Yes would like to also highlight about the pathetic Beauty salons in Kerala; from my prior experiences i can say Kerala would easily take the title for having "the worst beauty /hair salons ever". All my experiences have been bad if not very bad they are clueless hardly even mediocre. When you ask them for one of the services, as clueless as they are they nod to everything and try to tell you this and that but the whole time I don't feel convinced and out of desperation still sit through whatever and end up feeling way worse off than before. Like you said they definitely lack the education/training/ even proper regulatory bodies to see to it. So Kerala beauty/hair salons is something I cautiously stay away from, can't face anymore regrets regarding that.

Thanks for the lovely chit chat Jovi. I was born and raised in Dubai in the 90s and came to Kerala for my graduation. Never went back except for a few holidays during college, and for a 20 day vacation last year. I can relate to every point you mentioned and I'm pleasantly surprised you skipped the subtle misogyny, racism, safety standards, and blatant patriarchy back in our homeland! Beyond all the other minor inconveniences, this was major game changer for a gulfie like me. But, guess what. Looking back at those days, I loved every bit of my experience. Atleast, I've realised tolerance is something that has definitely changed for me, with time.

Doesn't Middle East have the most hot and dry climate ? When compared to India?? And Bangalore doesn't have the highest humidity when again compared to coastal areas. And wearing layers is for ppl who live in cold countries not for desert countries 😐
