The guy was not a party animal, Dave WAS THE PARTY ANIMAL, Mark was just a nice fella whom Eddie got replaced because he Mike for his vocals and because Mike was younger and obedient and Eddie was a control freak even then and Dave was a trainwreck already. Also the name of the band was not Mammoth but Genesis, Mammoth was their second option which they came up with when they heard there was another band named Genesis back in England.

Then, Rodney Bingenheimer saw Van Halen at the Gazzarri club in the summer of 1976, so he took Gene Simmons of Kiss to see Van Halen. Gene Simmons then produced a Van Halen demo tape with recording beginning at the Village Recorder studios in Los Angeles and finished with overdubs at the Electric Lady Studios in New York. Simmons wanted to change the band's name to "Daddy Longlegs," but the band stuck with Van Halen.

The guy couldn't hold his own on bass, be it personality, playing ability, business savy, persuasion, memory etc. The lineup Van Halen put together is iconic, Eddie is a musical genius, and they were destined to make it. The rest is history. To this day they put out the best rock-and-roll 4 guys in a room can. Love Van Halen original line-up, always did and always will. Sammy just kept the seat warm...
Van Halen are an 80's Pop-Rock band - as good as they are, you can't compare them to classic Rock bands like Pink Floyd, The Who, Led Zeppelin or the Rolling Stones etc.

yeah Warner Bros originally wanted there first album cover to look like The Clash's debut album but Eddie and David turned that idea down.
