I'm from Durban, I cannot walk around the CBD during the day. First time I went to Cape Town I genuinely thought I had left South Africa by mistake. The fact I could walk around alone and be completely safe made me almost cry. Cape Town is what my country should have been.
I lived in Cape Town for 2yrs '08-'10 and it was one of the best and most incredible experiences of my life even with getting robbed lol..l would love to go back, l miss it very much.
I use to stay in Cape Town about 5 years ago, I also use to walk at night, go shopping at 10pm or to the garage to grab some smacks at 2 am. It is relatively safe in the CBD and city bowl compared to Johannesburg and Pretoria. I recently moved from Pretoria to Johannesburg.
I was born and brought up in Durban until the age of 45, and am 67 years old now . I moved to Cape Town in 2000 and never looked back. I visit Durban often but will not want to live there again. Cape Town is something else altogether, Joburg, Pretoria and Durban cannot compare. I have worked in Hammanskraal for a while and I know Joburg and Pretoria.
Hey Sly, not sure if you still here or left already but if you plan on sticking around this coming week, hit me up. I’ll be more than happy to take you around and show all of Cape Town to you.
Lived here all my life. Your safety all depends upon where you walk (obviously). The bar / club / restaurant areas, safer - but watch out for your usual pick pockets, etc. The quieter areas, particularly side streets and areas that are usually used for day-time trading, commuting, etc. - those areas are more risky as you will stand out like a sore thumb. To be honest though, there probably aren’t any reasons why foreign tourists (especially) would actually need to be in those areas at night. I’d happily walk around any part of the Cape Town city Centre during the day though, and I do quite a lot. Some areas you have to keep your eyes open more than others, but the Cape Town CBD is probably the safest CBD out of all of the major city centers in SA.
Excellent video!! Every major city in South Africa looks like New Orleans, Houston, Dallas, Atlanta, and Phoenix all in a bowl the whole South... Period
The CBD areas look like a developed country but right outside all these cities are slums that look like nowhere in America. But the developed CBD parts look much more European. Some areas have developed American style suburbs too like durbanville

Long street is not what it used to be (around 2010-12 it was relatively safe and had great clubs), now it’s a hotspot for getting harassed and pick pocketed. Bree street is 2 streets up parallel from Long, and has the best night life. Great videos, subscribed!
That was super frustrating that those people told you to turn around - there are quite a few spots further up if you had continued eg Asoka, Yours Truly, Van Hunks, The Wolf House, Black Sheep, The Dark Horse, The Public House etc

One interesting fact about Cape Town is that it was built by the Dutch, French and Germans who made the hybrid we call Afrikkaners today. Hence you can see the French influence with Wine farms and building that look like New Orleans. The people living in Bo-Kaap(colourful Buildings) are the descendants of the slaves that were taken from Malaysia and other Asian countries hence are called Cape Malays.
Truth is the British are far more responsible for building Cape Town and the rest of SA, than the Dutch. Despite being a refreshment station for the Dutch East India Company the truth is the colony and its economy only seriously kicked off under British rule from the late 1700s. Even Johannesburg although being in the so-called Boer republics was catalyzed by "Anglo" economic activity.
The old buildings are more Victorian British than anything else. Wine estates have a definite French influence and some names too like LA Provance. And it was the slaves who built all these old buildings and worked the farms laying the foundation of modern SA economy.
Let's get one thing straight. South Africa was built at the backs of Black and Coloured people of South Africa. Cape Town as it is was built through exploitation of people of colour. So to just say the Dutch, French and Germans built Cape Town is disrespectful and gives off inferiority complex.
The hostel where I stayed in Cape Town was just a little bit further up on Kloof lol! Like everybody else in the comments, I wish that couple hadn't steered you around. It' was a place right above Yours Truly. Still, it was really nice to see what you did film on that street. Hope to return there in the next couple of years as well as visit more areas in SA.
So so annoying when people can only talk about crime. This video is about showcasing places around the world. It will be better if they rather suggest places for him to visit instead of referring to crime. Don't comment if you can only talk about crime
Heritage Day, 16 December. That was a quiet night, bro. You should go there on a weekend night. Non-stop party, right in the street, outside the clubs & pubs. No need to step into one. I booked myself a regular room at a Backpacker's (Urban Hive), you passed along the way. I'd just sit on the balcony & take in the street vibe. Loop Street is the party strip in the CBD; Kloof Street is more for eateries. You definitely hit the right spots in the city, for a night out!
Long street is the big ticket to clubs and pubs.... you should be there at christmas and new year... its amazing and very busy... Cape Town CBD has become alot safer this year but still be careful because there is still plenty that can go wrong.
Moved to south Africa from America, had to go to cape Town several times. Always enjoyed our stay, except for the immigration office lines. And my son and I felt good walking around at night... Yet alone during the day. Except one time, there wasn't much people around. We stayed in that time at night, but walked around freely during the day even though it was relatively low on normal amounts of people for that part of CT. Table mountain is amazing.
There are more upscale restaurants and clubs places further up where you were walking on Kloof Street. No idea why they told you turn around. Long street is 👎🏻
Nice one, Cape Town is rad. It's the only city in the country that actually has a working council. Notice the people in green and yellow emptying bins at that time of night.
If you go to Joburg around Melville, next to the bars, it is safe to walk around but if you go to Hilbrow, or Parktown at night, it is not safe at all.
Surprisingly quiet night, usually Long Street is so packed with pedestrians especially on 1st Thursday every month as in CT thats a celebration night welcoming the new month and weekends cars can't move along it.
