Fusion is a metaphor for relationships of all kinds. Some are familial, some are romantic, and some are toxic and abusive. Jasper and Lapis wanted to fuse for bad reasons, so they had a bad relationship. Like Garnet said, they're really bad for each other. And just like with bad relationships, bad fusions are the sort of thing you can get stuck in. Remember when Amethyst fused with Garnet and Sugelite went nuts? Again, that was an unhealthy relationship based on Amethyst's insecurity and Garnet's overconfidence.

True, but it's more than that. The reason Sugelite stayed together even though she was destructive is because Garnet & Amethyst were both getting something out of it. Their personalities may have played off each other in a toxic way but they were still playing off each other really strongly so the fusion was able to remain completely stable based on that. They probably never would have unfused if they didn't get knocked unconscious.
**SPOILERS BELOW DON'T READ IT SCOOT**
Similarly, the reason Malachite didn't unfuse immediately after things didn't go Jasper's way is because it didn't go in a direction she wasn't happy with - completely the opposite, actually. Lapis constantly fighting to keep them tied to the bottom of the ocean is coincidentally an ideal situation for Jasper because she thrives in conflict, fighting is a core aspect of her personality which doesn't change even after the series ends. Lapis initially stayed fused because otherwise Jasper would wreak havoc on earth, but eventually just because she got satisfaction from taking out her frustrations that way. On the other hand Jasper stays because she's addicted to the thrill of the power struggle, which is why she tries so badly to get them to fuse back together later. In her mind, on that "battlefield" they were evenly matched so she wants to keep it going as long as possible.
@@Denf0 you're right. I tried not to go into too much detail because of spoilers. What I love about this show is how every relationship is so real that there's a literally infinite amount of depth to examine, just like there is in real life relationships.

And even that makes me scratch my head bc I felt so full as a person back then. I was the person people came to for advice, optimistic, sensible... And now? Dang I don't even know what to do with myself. I lost my best friend, regretting college, and old wounds started to open up. A few short years can change u, believe it or not. And Steven's imposter syndrome resonated with me sm it hurts. I started doubting myself and my intentions, and felt like I was fooling everybody into thinking I'm this amazing person when I'm not. That I fooled them for 2 decades. Discredited all my good actions and started to scorn the people I helped bc now they're, in Stevens words, "Soo mature now" and that made me hate myself even more for thinking that. Coz what good friend would think that! This was what I wanted for them and now I'm mad they're better and wants to repay me by helping with my issues now? All I could think of was how shitty I was as a person.
And it'll only be a matter of time till everyone realizes.

About the fusions sometimes acting like 2 ppl vs 1 person: the more compatible and stable together they are, the more they act like one person.
1. All gems are depicted as a feminine her/she, but they are technically genderless.
2. Garnet has been very dependent on her fusion as ppl can be dependent on a relationship and ruby Sapphire at this point struggle to be alone.

Not all gems are depicted as feminine she her. There are two examples in the final season. Snowflake was definitely not a feminine she/her. And there was a gem Yellow Diamond was repairing that was straight up a man.

So the way it works with Lapis and Jaspers fusion “Malachite” is that because Lapis has such a strong will she has greater control over the fusion than Jasper does.
right! I was gonna say that the way Garnet fought a physical head on fight with Jasper to push her back and escape, Lapis is doing that but mentally. You can see jasper struggling to part from her as Lapis pulled them into the ocean.
Unless I'm horribly mistaken, at the point of them getting split, Ruby and Sapphire had been fused for like.. thousands of years. They were probably REALLY uncomfortable apart and panicking that they'd never be together again, so in their minds, there wasn't time to talk to Steven and explain everything.

Fusion in this show has been established to be a metaphor for relationships (any kind of relationship), and in this case, Jasper and Lapis were representative of a toxic relationship. Within show lore though, they were able to fuse because they share the same sentiments, a desire for power and revenge, which they both refused to let go of, so they weren't willing to unfuse despite the situation.
The way that I understand fusion is two gems come together to create something more than themselves. When a fusion is new or unstable, the separate personalities are more clearly defined.
The more the gems complement each other or the longer they've been together the more they lose any dissonance. In Opal’s 2nd appearance, she is defending beach city as 1 entity, but when Steven comes back we can see that Pearl and Amethyst have two separate reactions and unfuse. Someone stronger or more experienced with fusion could facilitate those separate thoughts by re-focusing in to separate personalities within the same body.
It doesn't matter if the fusion is destructive, as long as the personality traits work well together. That's why Sugilite says, “I am myself and I'm sick of being split up!” Because the fusion lost track of the distinction of garnet and amethyst and just wanted to thrash stuff. (Mood) Lapis and Jasper are extremely strong in polarizing ways so while it would be harder for their personalities to fully merged, Lapis’ will is strong enough to maintain the fusion.
Ideally, fusion is maintained through love and shit but sometimes you can maintain a fusion through sheer force of will. Although that _can't_ be good for the psyche.

I don't mind all the pausing. Since there's less episodes I think it helps to hear your thoughts more to lengthen the video. Also Rebecca Sugar said that every character shows up at *_least_* twice in the show so... you can assume that applies to new gems aswell. 🤷🏾♂️

Same here. I'm used to watching longer reaction videos for other TV shows, and I'd like to see that for SU as well -- it deserves thoughtful analysis. TBH I'd like it if your videos were longer, specifically seeing more of the parts of the show that you're reacting too -- sometimes it's a bit hard to figure out what you're reacting to without context. For example, if you laugh at a joke but leave out the joke itself (or just leave in the punchline), it can be hard to follow. Stuff like that. Especially since I haven't watched the show in years. Really enjoying the videos though!
There isn't really a hard limit on how many gems can be in one fusion. It's just a matter of how compatible/stable they all are together. Then of course the higher the number means the fusion is bigger and has more limbs/eyes/etc. usually.
thinking about fusions as 2 person relationships, the more compatible they are and the more they love someone the stronger the fusion is, and the more human they look. comparing garnet to the jasper/lapis fusion(malachite) garnet is a fusion that stays fused at all times,and other than her 3rd eye, she looks like any other single gem. But malachite has no actual legs, just a bunch of arms, she has 4 eyes, and is extremely unstable. the more gems in a fusion, the more limbs and other extremities there are, like alexandrite having six arms and 2 mouths

hes more mature then most people because hes kinda alone, no siblings, no mum, no dad (he doesnt live with him daily), the crystal gems dont really count because they're not as involved in his human life as much, so he has to deal with alot of human stuff alone and learn how to solve them.

That's kinda how I can place it, a good example of good compability is Garnet, Ruby and Sapphire always act as one, while a good example of bad compability is Jasper and Lapis, when you can notice the fusion's voice instead of being a voice on its own, it starts being a broken version of both voices.
Which is also the case as to why less compability leads to fusions being able to talk to each other, they're not "as one", they're just in the same body, therefore they just act on their own and, in this case, take control over the fusion.
Someone's probably said it, but the reason Garnet stays fused for so long is love. When Garnet sings she's "made of love", she means it.

16:20 Spot on as always Scoot. Connie and Steven’s exchange has several layers to it, but the writing here is also coded to the more mature audience of the show, about pursuing relationships. Any good relationship requires communication (ideally in-person, or at least face to face). It doesn’t matter if one party tries to withhold information to protect another, because we know a lack of communication will obviously lead it to fall apart or self-destruct. Steven has good intentions to shield Connie from the traumatic experience he just had, but hiding it from her will only hurt them both more, cuz she’s obviously now misconstruing him avoiding her as being HER fault. In any of our lives, we probably have all seen or known a relationship even between friends or acquaintances that fall apart due to a lack of communication.
Regarding the LGBT+ audience, this is very much coded to be like someone not coming out to a dear friend or family member, worrying if they’ll cut ties or disown you for telling them about oneself. Just like with the credits song, “Love Like You,” many moments in this show can be interpreted differently for different members of the audience, and all with just a few words, exchanges and their delivery. It’s the magic of animated shows like this that get conversations started and changed the lives of so many viewers. The show might not be perfect, but it still did a lot of good in starting these conversations.
There’s not really an upper limit for how many gems can be fused but generally the more gems are included in a fusion the more likely they are to be physically (or even mentally if they somehow manage to stay together in spite of that) unstable

You know how people sometimes stay in abusive relationships just to keep up appearances for others (like family/friends and society at large) that everything is fine, when it really isn’t? That’s essentially what Lapis & Jasper’s fusion represents; a struggling power dynamic where both parties stay together, even when one or both of them are getting hurt. Jasper will do near ANYTHING to have a fusion to get back at Garnet and the CGs, even stay in a fusion where she could get hurt. For Lapis, it’s to finally have some form of control in her life after thousands of years where she was trapped in the mirror against her will.
Also, when Ruby & Steven were trying to find Sapphire in the ship, Sapphire was actually singing the motif to “Stronger Than You” transposed up a half step to C# minor! And don’t worry, that won’t be the last time you see them both, they make several more appearances throughout the show 😊. Garnet did get a new fusion btw; you were right to say her legs look different, because the red portion receded back a little, so both red and blue halves go right down the middle.

As far as I know, there’s no limit on the number of people in a fusion.
Also other ppl have explained how fusion works but as for why Lapis can take control over their fusion is because
1: they’re unstable
2: Lapis is actually pretty powerful
In Garnet's first outfit she wore a black and crimson bodysuit, with cubic shoulder pads (the right one being brink pink, the left one being crimson), and a pale pink star with a brink pink outline on her chest. She also wore long, elbow-length black gloves that covered her middle fingers. And her shades were peach-tinted.
Now Garnet's outfit as opposed to crimson and black, her bodysuit became more colorful. Her right half was covered in a midnight stocking, and her left was covered in a dark orchid stocking. The star on her top's color also changed - instead of a pink star with a magenta outline, it became an amaranth-colored star with a soft-pink outline. Her shades, instead of pale-orange and white, became a soft-pink and pale-blue. Her shoulder pads were pear-like instead of cube-like, and both were a dark orchid color as well as her arms and gloves. The two halves of her lower body are now separated straight down the middle as opposed to the left thigh in the first outfit.

In theory there is no limit to the number of gems that can form a fusion, so long as:
1 ) all of the gems want to be apart of the fusion, or
2 ) one or more of the gems has a strong enough will to keep the fusion together (this one is the case for Lapis and Jasper; Lapis has thousands of years of suffering in the mirror feuling her anger and will to hold the fusion together)

To answer your question regarding why Ruby and Sapphire didn't want Steven to meet them like this, the circumstances were not ideal for their reveal. It was as if a special surprise that they were saving for later was spoiled
Fusions are metaphors for relationships. There's all sorts of different relationships, hence all sorts of different Fusions.
Malachite (Lapis & Jasper) is a particularly toxic relationship where one partner has a lot more power than the other.
ok so a little tip about fusions, as many gems as chosen can fuse BUT, the more gems that fuse into one, the more brains, or minds, that single gem would have to control. Which means if to many gems fuse, you might get a much slower reaction or lifestyle due to how many minds need to think at once. Garnet doesnt have much troble cos not only is she two gems but theyre also able to easily think as one most of the time, most 2-5 fusion gems are similar, but toxic realtion gems tend to be different in the fact that their fusion is either flaud, broken or somehow connected out of hate
The episode order for the end of S1 and the beginning of S2 is all messed up on streaming, the official order that the creators intended is listed below. Also they messed up the end of S2, the order is fine but the actual S2 finale is Log Date 7 15 2, not The Answer. Later seasons are fine

Jasper and lapis were able to fuse because they both shared hatred for the crystal gems. And I think the reason why lapis fused with jasper in the first place is because she doesn't want to forgive the gems so she fused with jasper and because lapis still wants to keep Steven safe so she did that. So u might be asking why didn't she just subdue jasper without fusing with her is probably because she directed all of her anger for the crystal gems towards jasper and only came to that realization after fusing with her or I'm just completely wrong. Idk 😄
In the fusion Lapis forces Jasper to stay fused with her to keep here locked away so it’s Lapis forcing Jasper to stay fused

these episodes are my favorites out of season 1
Garnet is a perfect fusion, you don’t see too many of those in the series. Her two halves are perfectly complimentary and almost always in perfect synch. Any moment where she’s of two minds is extremely rare and a Big Deal™
When gems fuse there basically consenting to sharing there Physical light forms to make a co-op form, in malachites situation lapis pretty much just decided to take full control of that light form instead which means jaspers gem/“body” can’t separate thus trapping her
So Malachite looks more monstrous because they're not compatible. They're also less stable which means their mind and control isn't as "combined". You can actually see Jasper trying to unfuse but they're both very strong. Malachite is stupidly powerful, they're only a 2 gem fusion but they're bigger than Alexandrite and maybe even Sugilite (idr quite how big she was).

Yeah idk Hulu kinda wilin there are supposed to be 52 episodes in season 1 and the first episode of this set was supposed to be the season 1 finale, I don't know which ones you missed exactly, doesn't seem like it was anything important, I think one of them was an Uncle Grandpa crossover. So, you're not missing out on much. But, the official order is way different.

lapis is keeping jasper bound her so shes unable to unfuse, its an example of real toxic relationships youll understand in future episodes of fusion but to keep it short fusion is like a relationship you have to be okay emotionally physically and emotionally, and when both disagree they unfuse, or they can fuse in a toxic way like bad relationships when they use gaslight, manipulating etc.
What they probably meant by out of order is the first bit of the serious is technically episodic, but they do have an order.

All* of the Gems are indeed named after real-life gemstones.
Ruby and Sapphire are both types of corundum - they're basically the same mineral, made primarily of aluminum oxide. If it's red, we call it a ruby, and if it's any other color (most commonly blue), we call it a sapphire. Named for the Latin ruber (red), the Greek sapphirus (blue), and the Sanskrit kurundam (ruby), although in this show, there might be another meaning going on with the name "Sapphire". Wink. 9 on the Mohs Scale. Symbolically, rubies are associated with pretty much everything the color red is associated with - passion, life, fire, vitality, all that good stuff - while sapphires are associated with nobility, truth, loyalty, and sincerity. Ruby is a birthstone for July while Sapphire is a birthstone for September. The fact that they're together is decent symbolism for how the actual gems share the same basic mineral structure.
Pearl is an organic gem (kinda ironic given Pearl is probably the Crystal Gem who is most separated from organic life). Pearls are made of calcium carbonate and produced by animals like oysters and mussels. The name is derived from the French perle, which comes from the Latin perna (leg), because the bivalves that pearls come from are shaped like ham legs. Range from 2.5 to 4.5 on the Mohs Scale. Symbolically, pearls are said to give wisdom, keep children safe, and cement love relationships, all of which is both fitting and ironic. They're a birthstone for June, and as a sidenote, they're the national gemstone of the Philippines, which is neat because Deedee Lynn Magno Hall - Pearl's voice actor - is Filipina-American.
Amethyst, the first one to not be a Pokémon title, is a type of quartz made from silicon dioxide, but with iron or radiation or whatever to male it purple. It's associated in classical myth with Dionysus/Bacchus, the god of drunkenness and intoxication (which does fit with our Amethyst's impulsiveness), yet strangely the name comes from the Greek a- (not) methysko (intoxicated), because the ancient Greeks believed that amethyst protected people from getting drunk, and even used containers made of amethyst to hold their drinks for that purpose. 7 on the Mohs Scale. And it's a birthstone for February.
Rose Quartz is, as you can probably guess, another form of quartz. It's quartz that has a pink or rose color, usually from trace amounts of manganese, titanium, or iron. It's known as the crystal of unconditional love, both for loving yourself and for relationships with others, which feels super fitting for both Rose and Steven. Weirdly enough, Rose Quartz is the only Crystal Gem whose gem isn't a birthstone.
Lapis lazuli is... not actually a crystal, but rather a type of metamorphic rock. It's mainly made of lazurite ((Na,Ca)8[(S,Cl,SO4,OH)2|(Al6Si6O24)])** mixed with other minerals like sodalite or fool's gold. The name comes from the Latin lapis (stone) and the Arabic lazaward (heaven). Between 5 and 6 on the Mohs Scale. Symbolically, it's associated with spiritual love, inner peace, and protection from evil, which is hilariously not how our Lapis is shown, though not quite as hilariously off as the fact that real lapis lazuli dissolves in water. It actually used to be considered a type of sapphire, and a lot of scholars believe that some old references to sapphires - including every use of the term in the Old Testament - was actually lapis lazuli. Lapis lazuli is not a birthstone now, but the National Association of Goldsmiths used to have it (along with sapphire) as a birthstone for September.
Peridot is a silicate mineral, olive-green thanks to its manganese and iron. I'm not entirely certain about the origin of the name, since it could be derived from the Latin pæderot (opal) or the Arabic faridat (gem). 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs Scale. It's rather accurate that, even though the Gems are all aliens, Peridot is the most alien of them all, since gem-quality peridots are chemically unstable on Earth, and so most peridots you'll see come from meteorites, and they're pretty common on Mars. Birthstone for August.
And the last single gem we've seen is Jasper. Another form of quartz (which means, you guessed it, 7 on the Mohs Scale), jasper gets its coloring from the minerals of the surrounding sediment when it forms, usually red from the iron(III) content. The name comes from the Greek iaspis (spotted stone). Associated with the earth and tranquility, for another hilarious nah, but it's also associated with Mars, which does fit her military character. Funnily enough, Jasper is one of the few gemstones that is usually a male name, and the reason for this is because the name Jasper is unrelated to the gemstone, being a Persian name meaning "treasurer". While Jasper itself is not a birthstone, one of its variants - heliotrope, aka bloodstone - is a birthstone for March.
And now for the fusions. Garnet is a whole category of silicates, with a crystal structure composed of three divalent cations, two trivalent cations, and three silicates. Because her color scheme uses a lot of red, she's most likely almandine or pyrope garnet, which would make a degree of sense as a fusion between two corundums, since both of those variants have aluminum as the trivalent cation (the difference ia that almandine has iron while pyrope has manganese). The name is derived from the English gernet (dark red). 6.5 to 7.5 on the Mohs Scale. Associated with strength, bravery, self-confidence, determination, protection, and of course, lo-o-o-o-ove. All very fitting. A birthstone for January, the same as the birth month of Garnet's voice actress, Estelle.
Opal is a hydrated silica, combining the "silica" of Amethyst with the "has something to do with water" of Pearl. SiO2 with H2O. Derived from the Greek opállios (to see a change in color) or the Sanskrit upala (jewel). Presumably, our Opal is precious opal, since she displays iridescence. Associated with creativity, inspiration, and imagination, which blends Pearl's intellectualism and Amethyst's individuality. 5.5 to 6 on the Mohs Scale, birthstone for October.
And lastly (for now), we have Sugilite. A cyclosilicate mineral, with the formula KNa2(Fe,Mn,Al)2Li3Si12O30. The name comes from the Japanese Sugi, which means Sugi. To clarify, it's named after Ken-ichi Sugi (1901-1948), who was the first to describe it. Pretty rare, purple-colored. Ironically, said to balance the mind and soul and protect from anger and negative feelings. 5.5 to 6.5 on the Mohs Scale.

My personal take on their power is pearl probably has more skills. she can fight with more weapons, is probably more agile, etc, but garnet has more raw power on account of her being literally 2 in one. Garnet also has future vision, so even if pearl could win with strategy garnet could see through it
And on the fusion thing, going only off of what the show has shown so far, my early interpretation of this was either that Lapis' will was so strong she overpowered jasper wanting to split, OR jasper WANTED to stay fused for the power (her only other option is to run away or just lose), and was too stubborn or prideful to cut her loses and break the fusion
Garnets new outfit is hard to tell, but her shoulder pads are smaller, her hair is smaller, her color skem is hit pink and dark blue now.
I believe that Garnet is the better fighter over Pearl, it’s just that Garnet is the brute force of the group and does things with that in mind. Pearl is more strategic than the other gems so she can find ways to give her more of an advantage. In a 1 on 1 fight between the 2, I think that Garnet wins low diff

As many comments have said, fusions are representations of relationships. Jasper and lapis have a toxic relationship, being together for toxic reasons. That is why their voice isn’t a singular voice, but an overlay of multiple, they aren’t in sync. They don’t have shared or comparable intentions.
All gems are genderless but present mostly feminine and use She/Her, also when fused.
Fusion between Connie and Steven is a mix of a boy and a girl so Stevonnie is nonbinary/intersex and uses They/Them.
If Steven were to fuse with a full gem the fusion would also use They/Them
