You forget about all your problems, they simply do not exist, there is you and the silence of the forest! The silence from which is muffling. Your senses sharpen as you hear the wind, the rustle of grass, and leaves. The creaking of the trunks. At this moment, you feel that you are alive, you are alive now, you listen to your breath, your heart, Nothing can replace these feelings. You are cleansed of all that weighed on you yesterday. Just you and nature. And you're on your own. You're alive now, and that's all that matters. For this we go to the forest. To experience it, over and over again. Those who have experienced it will understand. Those who have not experienced it, still have everything ahead of them. Thank you for giving me this feeling. It turns out that I saw my own inner world in front of me, and what looked menacing in my eyes, in fact, was an echo of the fears that had settled in me. The web that entangles me is the web of spiders spread in my heart. And the birds that chirp overhead are raised by me. These are the images that were born and took root in my head.
I really enjoyed watching and listening to you. It's like having a conversation with a mate so it's dead relaxed and no pretentiousness. Well done, stay true to who you are because that's why it works.
Good trick for better insulation, while still allowing ventilation for gas build up, is to pile leaves along the outside bottom of the tent, effectively "sealing" the tent base. The leaves will act as a barrier against wind and snow, while not blocking the transfer of fresh air. This will allow a smaller fire to maintain in the stove. American Plains Indians, who used portable housing (the ubiquitous TeePee), piled dirt or sand around the base to fully seal off weather. An inner liner kept an open space between the tent wall, and the living area, creating a draft effect that kept stale air and smoke rising to the open vent in the top of structure. Fresh air was controlled by how open the access flap was kept. A small fire pit in the center radiated heat to keep the TeePee warm, and also created the upward draft that kept the inner area smoke free.
I never had much success with a bow drill over my years of (summer) camping. Few of the many who have tried have found the patience and the skill and the fiddly circumstances necessary to make a lasting ember. Cold and damp make it that much more difficult to raise wood dust temperature by friction. That is just one of the ways in which this has been a great 'teaching' video. I am impressed and surprised by the serious shelter those two ponchos provide in cold conditions. The G stove is so well designed and sturdy that it is truly photogenic. Thanks for showcasing the heating and cooking capabilities of the small-sized stove. In that regard, the egg-cooking demonstration on the third morning was absolutely necessary. The pan you used also deserves a 'shout out' for the eggs not sticking or burning.
Great move posting the attempts that do not work. It shows that it's a practice and even you are still working on it. I think it is mostly about enjoying the attempts and the process.

The fire reflector is such a helpful implement that I would actually build a 3-sided one, with the two sides at a wide angle. Could make a big difference if you wanted to be outside more and get some heat from a bigger fire.
I've been watching your channel non-stop while in self-isolation. Amazing talent and respect for nature. From some of your other videos, I absolutely agree: learn our ancestors' knowledge so we can pass it down. Difficult times right now, but all the more reason it's good for everyone to practice self reliance and be able to work with your hands.
This was lovely to watch! A few quick tip from Northern Norway: Eat more! Your body burns a ton of calories to keep you warm. You'd probably be less cold and tired if you did :) And when you wake up with snow on your canvas, beat it off (from the inside) before firing up the stove. When you leave the snow on the canvas and heat it up, it melts in large quantities and seeps into the fabric as it runs down. When you beat it off first, it can' melt and make your canvas wet (for then to be dried by the fire) because it's on the ground already! :D

I'm in my 60s, and use a cane some. My dog & I pack a wagon or sled which I pull at about average 70 lbs. I like lots of comfort and that weighs alot more than a pack. We are spoiled. Best wishes.

Hello from Canada. You have a great set up and knowledge of the outdoors. All you need is a minus 30 sleeping bag and long Johns and you would fit right in with our Canadian winters. Cheers my backcountry friend.

True, but with non-stop snow every year, it justifies spending money and effort on preparing for it. In the South of the UK, it's easier to put up with a minor inconvenience once every 5 years. Here it's more wind chill and the wet which is the problem. I teach Polish students who laugh at the small amount of snow, yet moan about how cold they are here.
Hey Mike just stumbled on your platform. Great video. Took me back to days when I used to winter camp like 47 years ago. No such thing called bush craft back then. We called it survival training. Food, water, fire, hygiene and sanity is all you really need plus God!

First time we have had snow like this in the South of England for at least 5 or 6 years - I had to make the most of it! It was a bitter Easterly wind and snow front that came over from Siberia. British Press named it "The Beast from the East" haha!! Hope you enjoy - Mike
I own a 1966 pup tent that I bought NOS from a dealer who got it from the US government back in 1986. ! It's a serious bit of kit !! Can't wait to get it broken in on my 2024 camping trip ! Great video by the way !!✌
Quite a while since the video was uploaded I know but, I was filled with envy 😅.... When that passed, a longing to be the person in that situation. I love the coolest weather and isolated conditions. Limited gear with effort and know how, that I think could be achieved by many individuals is producing a surreal experience! I was so into this video, that I realised I was getting cold 🥶! My dog and I pull a wagon or kids sled, depending on weather. Heck with that backpack thing. We pack lots of gear easy because I don't carry it. Lots of these guys are fake on U Tube. I don't know about this guy.

Canadian winter camping tips: To seal-off the bottom of your shelter/tent and keep cold from drafting in, pack snow over the ends of your tent. even if the snow melts and freezes back into ice, it can't freeze through enough to seriously effect the malleability of the material. Instead of packing a stove for a small shelter, consider packing a gas lantern. it won't warm the shelter up as /much/ but it'll give you a good ten degree difference in temperature [which is enough with the right sleeping equipment] , be easier to stow in a pack, and also serve dual purpose as a light source both in and out of your shelter. also, with a lantern, carbon monoxide poisoning is much less of a concern.
You should do guided treks with one or two people. Really in depth info for the participants. I swear, people would pay you a fortune to spend 3-4 days with you and learn some skills

Nice to see a spark arrestor. I'm a big believer in them. My young daughter first saw snow in York - we're from South Texas, USA. No camping, but I took the train up to Inverness and stood on the shore. Beautiful, dramatic. UK at it's best. I was working in Peterboro. at the time. Christmas in London.

I’m always amazed at the birch trees that grow wild where you are. I’m here in USA in NC and our birch trees grown where people or businesses have them planted. I’m not complaining, trust me. I have seen some in people’s yards but they had them planted. I’m surprised that I haven’t seen any in the wild.
As far as a lightweight canvas protector for the stove-pipe, I recommend looking into thermal heatwrap for automotive applications. We use it to cover the header tubes directly from engine head exhaust ports - great stuff, wraps up almost like boxing hand wraps.

@@patrickschoenpflug They have a lot of options, but if you were to wrap the stove pipe twice with even lower quality thinner stuff, that would provide I believe more than enough insulation.
My favorite of the videos you make, are always going to be your overnighters. I like to see what little tips and tricks you use while camping. I am going camping this summer for our honeymoon and I hope to use a lot of the tips and trick while camping.
I almost didn't even watch this, but now I'm subbed. Thought "Ok, I don't think I want to watch an hour long video if he's not going to talk at all." Made it to 10 minutes, thought "I wonder what he's making here?" By the time I saw the bacon going into the pan I thought "Ok I don't care if he doesn't talk at all, I'm watching this whole thing." Great video.Thank you. I planned & dreamed for 🏕️ camping in the outdoors. Was getting disappointed with myself not being full-time out there. Than I become homeless in the summertime & got my first tent.Was a bit scary for the first few days only having 1-2 mm wall around me.Gradually got used to the colder weather as time went by.This way was easy adjustment towards my minus 7 night time + snowy few days. It was a thrill surviving that first winter. My friends & I was even proud of it.Even had a nasty flue for 3 weeks camping out but I just kept warm & healthy eating.This started at the age of 63.Have an apt now but once a week or more still sleeping in my rent.I can't wait for a good minus 10 overnight.More tests on me.The often calmness of nature changes you to be a better person.Not to mention the stormy days & nights!!!🏕️😜.Nature rules! You adopt. Be safe and healthy.

That was a cracking opening drone/ ground clip Mike. Welldone! As for the stove, I will keep my Frontier stove for now. It's still going strong but won't last as long as yours that for sure. Welldone on staying out during the cold snap. Nice to have the snow but it was hard on the wildlife who have had to endure winter and scrape a meager living from the land. All the best Sandy
Its called survival of the fittest or natural selection with wildlife. Its been going on for millions of years. The strong survive and the weak die. Gets rid of the bad genes. This year we had record snow in 40 years or so. One dipshit I work with started feeding the wild rabbits behind the shop. They no longer go out to forage. They just sit behind shop waiting to get fed. Feeding wildlife is not good for them. I put in my two weeks notice this week. Tired of working with dipshits.

The odd cackle of a bird but other than that lovely quiet & peaceful environment, now and again a movement or rustle of a human, I too hope you get a real awesome drop of snow. Hey T.A. a great rendition of common sense about the weather. I love that stove good size & easy to maintain & to keep hot. What could be lovely for a quick meal is sachets that are creamy cheese with pasta & made with water & butter, you can add other food & you can keep half of it back for later, very filling. I really enjoy these type of videos, reminds me of my years camping in winter and summer with my scout troop. Just a tad cold here in Canada. Basically the same principles but we had more equipment. Your stove would have made everything easier for me but we had fun and every trip has a learning curve and new things/wildlife to observe. Very good video thank you 👍
In the UK, camping I imagine is a lot more stress free, and by that I mean, in the USA you have wolves, Puma (Mtn Lion), Bear, although in winter not so much with bear….but you get my drift there.
This one of those videos that is long as hell, but man, I never stopped watching till the end. This video actually opened my eyes to real survival and the tools. Been spending my time trying to buy these camping pop-up tents and all the extra goodies to live in the wild...LOL!!! What a waste of money. They're only good for a jaunt into the wild for a few days, maybe weeks. Forget all that. Spend your money on quality tools that will actually help you survive in the wilderness. Smash some small tiny rocky stones into pieces and granules, pour into the cavity helps with the friction... A good Apache friend taught me that...seriously. I live in Arizona, and used to work on Ranches and Farms and made a lot of Indian friends.

This was lovely to watch! A few quick tip from Northern Norway: Eat more! Your body burns a ton of calories to keep you warm. You'd probably be less cold and tired if you did :) And when you wake up with snow on your canvas, beat it off (from the inside) before firing up the stove. When you leave the snow on the canvas and heat it up, it melts in large quantities and seeps into the fabric as it runs down. When you beat it off first, it can' melt and make your canvas wet (for then to be dried by the fire) because it's on the ground already! :D

I'm in my 60s, and use a cane some. My dog & I pack a wagon or sled which I pull at about average 70 lbs. I like lots of comfort and that weighs alot more than a pack. We are spoiled. Best wishes.

I do feel you with all the noise the media is makeing about the Beast from the East, and then 20 cm of snow. I'm from eastern Europe, and nothing stops in the city or vilages even with 40 cm of snow. Nice video :)
This is why I like watching your videos sir...my dad never taught me any bushcraft ,camping, or fishing. But I do wanna teach these kinda things to my boys. So I learn so I can teach...thank you for your knowledge...ill keep watching.

True, but with non-stop snow every year, it justifies spending money and effort on preparing for it. In the South of the UK, it's easier to put up with a minor inconvenience once every 5 years.
Here it's more wind chill and the wet which is the problem. I teach Polish students who laugh at the small amount of snow, yet moan about how cold they are here.
Hey Mike just stumbled on your platform. Great video. Took me back to days when I used to winter camp like 47 years ago. No such thing called bush craft back then. We called it survival training. Food, water, fire, hygiene and sanity is all you really need plus God!

Yes, and dead trees are typically drier. Unless they are rotten. A fresh birch is easily up to 50% moisture.
First time we have had snow like this in the South of England for at least 5 or 6 years - I had to make the most of it! It was a bitter Easterly wind and snow front that came over from Siberia. British Press named it "The Beast from the East" haha!! Hope you enjoy - Mike

I own a 1966 pup tent that I bought NOS from a dealer who got it from the US government back in 1986. ! It's a serious bit of kit !! Can't wait to get it broken in on my 2024 camping trip ! Great video by the way !!✌

My dog and I pull a wagon or kids sled, depending on weather. Heck with that backpack thing. We pack lots of gear easy because I don't carry it. Lots of these guys are fake on U Tube. I don't know about this guy.

Canadian winter camping tips: To seal-off the bottom of your shelter/tent and keep cold from drafting in, pack snow over the ends of your tent. even if the snow melts and freezes back into ice, it can't freeze through enough to seriously effect the malleability of the material. Instead of packing a stove for a small shelter, consider packing a gas lantern. it won't warm the shelter up as /much/ but it'll give you a good ten degree difference in temperature [which is enough with the right sleeping equipment] , be easier to stow in a pack, and also serve dual purpose as a light source both in and out of your shelter. also, with a lantern, carbon monoxide poisoning is much less of a concern.

You should do guided treks with one or two people. Really in depth info for the participants. I swear, people would pay you a fortune to spend 3-4 days with you and learn some skills

Nice to see a spark arrestor. I'm a big believer in them. My young daughter first saw snow in York - we're from South Texas, USA. No camping, but I took the train up to Inverness and stood on the shore. Beautiful, dramatic. UK at it's best. I was working in Peterboro. at the time. Christmas in London.

I’m always amazed at the birch trees that grow wild where you are. I’m here in USA in NC and our birch trees grown where people or businesses have them planted. I’m not complaining, trust me. I have seen some in people’s yards but they had them planted. I’m surprised that I haven’t seen any in the wild.

As far as a lightweight canvas protector for the stove-pipe, I recommend looking into thermal heatwrap for automotive applications. We use it to cover the header tubes directly from engine head exhaust ports - great stuff, wraps up almost like boxing hand wraps.

@@patrickschoenpflug They have a lot of options, but if you were to wrap the stove pipe twice with even lower quality thinner stuff, that would provide I believe more than enough insulation.

My favorite of the videos you make, are always going to be your overnighters. I like to see what little tips and tricks you use while camping. I am going camping this summer for our honeymoon and I hope to use a lot of the tips and trick while camping.
I almost didn't even watch this, but now I'm subbed. Thought "Ok, I don't think I want to watch an hour long video if he's not going to talk at all." Made it to 10 minutes, thought "I wonder what he's making here?" By the time I saw the bacon going into the pan I thought "Ok I don't care if he doesn't talk at all, I'm watching this whole thing."
Less than 5 minutes later my first thought was "I could've swore this guy was going to be Canadian!!"

I planned & dreamed for 🏕️ camping in the outdoors.
Was getting disappointed with myself not being full-time out there.
Than I become homeless in the summertime & got my first tent.Was a bit scary for the first few days only having 1-2 mm wall around me.Gradually got used to the colder weather as time
went by.This way was easy adjustment towards my minus 7 night time + snowy few days. It was a thrill surviving that first winter.
My friends & I was even proud of it.Even had a nasty flue for 3 weeks camping out but I just kept warm & healthy eating.This started at the age of 63.Have an apt now but once a week or more still sleeping in my rent.I can't wait for a good minus 10 overnight.More tests on me.The often calmness of nature changes you to be a better person.Not to mention the stormy days & nights!!!🏕️😜.Nature rules! You adopt.

That was a cracking opening drone/ ground clip Mike. Welldone! As for the stove, I will keep my Frontier stove for now. It's still going strong but won't last as long as yours that for sure. Welldone on staying out during the cold snap. Nice to have the snow but it was hard on the wildlife who have had to endure winter and scrape a meager living from the land.

Its called survival of the fittest or natural selection with wildlife. Its been going on for millions of years. The strong survive and the weak die. Gets rid of the bad genes. This year we had record snow in 40 years or so. One dipshit I work with started feeding the wild rabbits behind the shop. They no longer go out to forage. They just sit behind shop waiting to get fed. Feeding wildlife is not good for them. I put in my two weeks notice this week. Tired of working with dipshits.

The odd cackle of a bird but other than that lovely quiet & peaceful environment, now and again a movement or rustle of a human, I too hope you get a real awesome drop of snow. Hey T.A. a great rendition of common sense about the weather. I love that stove good size & easy to maintain & to keep hot. What could be lovely for a quick meal is sachets that are creamy cheese with pasta & made with water & butter, you can add other food & you can keep half of it back for later, very filling. Easy to transport around Cool video.

I really enjoy these type of videos, reminds me of my years camping in winter and summer with my scout troop. Just a tad cold here in Canada. Basically the same principles but we had more equipment. Your stove would have made everything easier for me but we had fun and every trip has a learning curve and new things/wildlife to observe. Very good video thank you 👍

In the UK, camping I imagine is a lot more stress free, and by that I mean, in the USA you have wolves, Puma (Mtn Lion), Bear, although in winter not so much with bear….but you get my drift there.
