truly they are one of the best and healthiest couples in media with amazing development and maturity. they work out any flaws and problems they have and not everything is perfect but it works out and they aim to improve.
And he helps her as well! Too many shows either go the “look at our super abrasive only female character whos shown as strong by hating femininity!” Or “look at this cardboard cutout with boobs! Shes such a great love interest” and dont bother to make the love interest a charcter. So great that even with her being the love interest they changed that
Both had an influence on each other Hiccup became more brave and warrior like while maintaining his kind and good-hearted nature and Astrid grew her emotional side while maintaining her warrior like personality this why this couple was one of the best I’ve ever seen
Astrid is a really good example of how a strong female character should be. Able to hold her own, but has a softer side to her. She’s not fearless or invincible, but her bravery and courage helps her face those fears.
I’m sorry I’m probably just dumb but why should a strong female character be any certain way? Idk I feel like there’s a bunch of strong male characters with differing flaws and aspects of their personality, so why do the girls all have to be like Astrid? Sorry if I’m misunderstanding :)
@@itsuki4449Because "strong female character" doesn't mean "a female character who is strong" its a specific archetype made to combat the damsel in distress archetype. The damsel in distress came under fire as an offensive portrayal of women as almost every woman in film was useless, shallow, and weak. In response the film industry swung to the opposite end of that spectrum, making characters that were powerful forces to be reckoned with, but unfortunately just as shallow. They show up, kick ass, are dicks to everybody for no reason, and basically have no reason to be there. An example of this is Jo Braddock from the Uncharted movie. Braddock is made the main antagonist of the film when she murders Moncada, but aside from general greed, she has absolutely no motivation, unlike the admittedly not super interesting but still far more interesting Moncada, who is the descendant of the people who originally funded the expedition that found the treasure everyone was after. Meanwhile Braddock had nothing. No ties to the treasure or plot except that she wants to be rich I guess. Astrid is a GOOD example of the archetype because she is a powerful force to be reckoned with, but also many other things, and she works well with her team, and has actual, not one word motivations. Thats why other strong female characters should be like her.
@@itsuki4449 Is that usually when the media makes a "strong female character" she's usually made without flaws or weaknesses or written as a male with no maternity or femininity. Also for some reason they write them as mean monsters that are arrogant like some kind of brutes.
Hence why she does still have the armour, spikes, and skull designs, despite the now softer clothing, which honestly might just be from the changing and developing animation
I just don't understand if they fought so many dragons since childhood how one action of kindness could change their nature? just imagine chopping dozens of dragon heads and then boom I love them and no flashbacks of doing that appear anytime and that makes no sense
I love that they gave her a good character arc with depth and consistency throughout the movies instead of making her an accessory to hiccup. She’s one of my favorite characters. They gave her a unique sense of humor, they made her a sensible natural leader, and KEPT her that way throughout all three movies!!!
They all did. Hiccup made them armor with their respective dragons' scales. He had Night Fury armor, Ruff & Tuff had Zippleback, Snotlout had Nightmare, etc.
Love that she is both soft but also shown to be fully capable especially in the shows. In one episode she quite literally punched a snake dragon, poisoning herself to save her dragon. At the same time she actually relies on others to help her when needed.
I love that episode! Though, I am still slightly disappointed we didn't get to see Hiccup's reaction to what she did. I'm sure they told him about it later, but I'm sure he would've freaked out like in that episode where Heather says Astrid "got shot in the leg" to block the arrow from hitting Stormfly
its the depth of character details like this that makes me love httyd more and more. im sure there are details loke this to be observed for a lot of other characters too.
Dosen't the name "Astrid" mean something along the lines of "Divine Beauty"? Also it makes sense, a soft but strong woman, who chooses to support instead of leading, will always be attractive to a boy or man who has the innate will to be the hero of his people. We're wired that way.
FINALLY I’M NOT THE ONLY ONE! I love that show and it sucks that is honestly didn’t get better animation nor the recognition it deserves as the bridge between movie 1 and movie 2.
Her hair texture also changes a lot from the first movie because there was a huge advancement in animation technology to make more realistic textures. But I can defiantly see her going from aggressive teen to mature adult.
I’ve seen kids like this before, sometimes when I felt this way too when you feel insecure about something and you have gut feeling something just isn’t right.
Also the fact that in the first movie her hair was cover half her face but by the third movie her hair is pushed more to the side this shows that she was slowly beginning to open up to hiccup like how her hair was starting to show her face more :)
I also feel like she changed because they befriended the dragons. There was no need for carrying so much armour anymore when not having to fight the dragons anymore + having a big advantage in any kind of fight thanks to the dragons.
Man.... She is a viking. Of course she has armour. Also the second outfit is the same but with fur because winter was approaching so tge weather was colder.
Aww I love Astrid in all movies. Like, if she wasn't there, Hiccup would never have gotten the bravery to fight the Red Death, but also, if Hiccup was never there, we would never know the wonderful character she is now.
It's almost like she changed in personality and style as the world around her changed and as she grew up. Who would've ever thought that was possible...
I think this type of style change is very common in women. We tend to dress more rebellious in our teens and gradually it gets more softer and feminine over time.
Another bit of trivia: Astrid is the only female character who had the side ponytail throughout the entirety of Httyd 2... and LIVED. She's that badass!
@TheFandomWarriorLexy Hollywood is more concerned with race swapping and identity politics as a whole than telling unique stories with interesting characters. How's that for being "my point" lol.

Also, during the movie at the start, her hair is in her face, but as the movie progresses, and she gets to know, hiccup and toothless, her hair slowly moves to her ear
I think that Hiccup has a similar character development. He became more of a Viking Warrior in the second movie. Astrid has clearly had as much influence on him has he has had on her. That's what makes their love story so great. They build on each other. Each becomes better with help from the other
I actually hated the fact that her hair wasn't fully tied back in the third movie, it makes more sense for her to have a practical hairstyle that stops her hair from getting in her way when fighting with an axe or riding a dragon. She's a shieldmaiden and having her hair free from restraint could cause problems for her. In my opinion, anyway.
The TV shows Riders of Berk, Defenders of Berk, and Race to the Edge add on to this as well. They were great shows that were way better than the second and third movies.
Astrid was a strong woman character done right for movies. Disney should learn how to do the same....yes i saw what i did there. True. Plus the race to the edge tv show expands on her relationship with Hiccup even more which shows how passionate she is around him in the 2nd and 3rd movie as well as her relationships with the other dragon riders.
That's a very interesting way of describing the degradation of her character into becoming a full time trophy wife and Hiccup's emotional support girlfriend that no longer has any personal goals and ambitions and only exists within her role as love interest. I'm not saying that she can't mellow out a little over time but she barely feels like the same person anymore and in THW they even stripped her of her signature braid and replaced it with an impractical hairstyle to make her more "pretty".
