This video is so helpful, I'm looking at my instagram account and I only post finish works, while watching this video I'm immediately scrolling through my photos finding images of me painting or my studio space. A quick story- when I started my art insta, I was In the middle of IB (High school) and stopped posting for a while when all my deadlines and mock exams where approaching. At the time I only had around 5 or 6 post then a hate account that post stuff about other accounts that where supposedly some of the worst accounts on instagram, message me saying delete my account cuz my page was horrible and is in the top 10 worst account on insta or something like that. The hate account is now gone (literally disappeared) and I think my account is doing fine but that message made me feel so insecure and embarrass, it doesn't effect me now but that stuck for like a year.
I just discovered your channel and I honestly love everything you talk about! Your cheery voice with such helpful information is really wonderful to listen to while I'm working on my comics!
It's interesting that you have such a preference for Instagram. Depending on what type of work an artist makes, Twitter is far better. Personally, I really dislike Instagram's "selfie culture" & stories which feel like spam to me. The format really favors graphic, simple designs & portraits. As an environment designer there are just so many more of us on Twitter. Same with art directors - it's Twitter & Art station. But if you're trying to monetize little digital illustrations of characters & such, IG is clearly in the lead.
Twitter is definitely popular with lots of animators and people in the entertainment industry, much less so for fine artists. Ultimately tho, it really depends on the artist and who your audience is. -Prof Lieu
Such useful info. I agreed with pretty much everything you said, especially that if people post a bunch of stuff all at once, I block them. Post once a day, tops, imo. I see people announcing work in their etsy stores, that's great, but I should watch your artist jealously video i think... I'm amazed by how productive some people are. Thank you Art Prof!!! And thank you for the two months of Skillshare, that is awesome!
This video was such an invaluable source of information! I've been using Instagram for almost 8 years now but never took it seriously as a place to promote myself as an artist until I got to university. I did had a separate account for just my art to free up my personal instagram from just the art I was making and honestly, the art account was almost neglected until I had a switch in priorities. Now, I use Instagram to better enrich myself as an artist from all the people I follow as well as posting my artwork. Now my art account is the only one that I use. Thank you!
Me too! I love seeing so much inspiration every day, even though the pressures of social media do get to me at times. Thank you so much for watching! - Mia Rozear, Art Prof Staff
I finally went to your website. It's amazing. Love your style. I really like Falling: Emerge. It's a visual of how I feel somedays, working in the hospital
I am subscribing and starting to follow you on Instagram. This video is so helpful! I finally have at least some idea on what's what and how to do it. Thank you!
Wow, this video has a ton of information for me to handle! I don't even pass on the three things you mentioned on the start of the video 😂🤦. The emoji slides are so helpful and fun! One question: I don't like social media. I feel like it gives off so much negativity, and it really doesn't help me improve my personality and my art. I'm in highschool, currently self learning art. Should I start building my Instagram rn, or should i wait until I'm doing stuff professionally? Thanks so much😍
I think since you're in high school, it's really not necessary at this point, and it would probably b more harmful than helpful. I am telling college students that they should get started by their junior so when they graduate they have a substantial platform. Before then, you don't need it! -Prof Lieu
Hi Professor Lieu, since I’ve found art prof I feel like the channel and all of the artists helping out have really helped me improve as an artist and I find myself tagging art prof or the artists in a few things on Instagram or I try to ask a question during every live stream. Just out of curiosity is this something you should limit yourself from doing? Thanks!
Hi! So glad you found us and that you're improving as an artist! My dream is for Art Prof to be my full-time job, but right now we just don't have the budget to make that possible. Hopefully some day! -Prof Lieu
Art Prof: Create & Critique I hope that dream comes true because you really are helping out so many artists in many ways! I’m not able to work right now because of the pandemic but when I do I am wanting to help by making some donations or something. But I hope you didn’t think I was asking about you limiting yourself on things. I can see how that could’ve been misinterpreted. I was asking more about myself like do you enjoy being tagged in a lot of stuff or do you see it as unprofessional?
No worries, I didn’t take it that way at all! If you mean being tagged on social media, I don’t mind at all. I love it when people share their art with me.-Prof Lieu
Really liked this. Pressure relief! Still completely addled with hashtags. I've completely whittled down what I watch. Can feel so inadequate by it all and I'm way past high school 😁.
Hi Dr. Lieu! I really enjoyed your down-to-earth approach with Instagram strategy, and I'm definitely glad I've never purchased one of those IG, do this for followers courses! I've listened to many art-biz podcasts, and the information here is similar, so I appreciate the grounded advice. My question is, I seem to have many, many artists who I follow and they follow me back. I enjoy the community I have with them, but how do we go about developing a broader audience? Or, should we be concerned about that? Also, I have heard that the magic number of followers with IG is 1,000...then 5,000, and so on. Any truth to that? I'm stuck at around 850, however, I know this is due to having a full-time non-artist job right now. My presence on IG is not as consistent as it has been in the past. Thanks for all you do!
Expanding community can be hard, it's true, and the Instagram algorithm can make it even harder! Joining both in person and online artist groups and exhibitions, collaborating with other artists, trying an event like say an art fair, are all ways to build relationships and expand your following. Thank you all off your videos you published on TH-cam! I'm watching this video and one of topics is to attract my target audience, so my question is : How can I find out who my target audience is?" Is there some way to do that? Thanks for all of your work and time! Ivy
You're so welcome, thank you so much for tuning in with us!! I'd say you can break up different genres like children's illustration, nature illustration, commercial advertising, etc. If you're a traditional painter, your audience might be geared towards adults who like fine art! This track might help you out as well when it comes to interacting with people: artprof.org/learn/artist-business-track-week-1/ Hope this helps! - Mia, Art Prof Staff
I do not want to niche on one art form or one discipline….What if I like doing multiple things like painting, printing, embroidery? Will it be the right way if I post everything on the same Instagram account. Although I’m leaning more toward the botanical genre in all of my work whether it’s embroidery or fine art.
Depends on your goals, but I really like seeing an artist doing different things! Look at my Instagram, you'll see I am all over the place (@claralieu) -Prof Lieu

3 times a week is impossible. Art takes time and life gets in the way.
