    My brother and l had a "survival" camp in Ontario's near north, and the friendly farmer who owned the land allowed us to build a semi-permanent camp, which we used for over 10 years.
    We repaid the favour to the owner by working on his farm, and one of his crops was buckwheat which we harvested and stored away in his barn.
    Here in Canada, buckwheat is often used in pancakes, but more often is grown for the honey it's flowers & the bees produce. Then the "seeds" are more than likely used for bird seed or animal feed. China now supplies Japan with most of Japan's buckwheat needs, so since demand is down, farmers here produce more profitable crops like canola or wheat.
    Ground buckwheat makes a great addition to wheat flour for breads and bannock...it is extremely nutritious.
    Thank you for bringing up this topic and for returning to me fond memories of bush camping and buckwheat harvesting.

      In France, Britany is the province where buckwheat (known as black wheat) is grown and the flour is used for making pancakes, a stapple of this province cuisine.

    • @DarkLinkAD
      @DarkLinkAD 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Paul Thiessen Canola is a marketing acronym(from the 90s), meaning "Canada Oil".
      In similar news, peanut milk and almond milk dont exist either. Additionally peanuts are actually beans(legumes/frijoles) not nuts.
      Let us also not forget, that buffalo wings arent from a buffalo.

    • @DarkLinkAD
      @DarkLinkAD 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Paul Thiessen Not true, its a licensing scam that uses rapeseed, brown mustard seeds and rutabaga.
      Its also very toxic and known to cause rashes, anal leakage, numb lips etc

    The forest is our natural habitat. So of course we have an instict to want to be there. It makes us happy, calm and it makes us feel at home. The thought that my ancestors have walked these woods for tens of thousands of years is an awesome thought. And hundreds of thousands of years before the ice age, down in southern Europe :)

      No, human life didnt start in Africa. The out of Africa theory has been debunked for awhile. Now it's only used in politics to misguide people. And then it's repeated as a "fact" instead of a theory by misguided people. Genetic test and archeology have proven that humans originated from someplace else . As reported in New Scientist, the 8- to 9-million-year-old hominin jaw bones were found in Europe, Greece . And that's older than anything found in Africa.

    I think you are correct in your genetic memory theory. There are things we feel or do that are pure instinct that have to come from our ancestry via some kind of genetic memory storage. Why are we drawn to the woods and why do we revel in the hardships of sleeping out on cold nights? Without a doubt it comes from the thousands upon thousands of years our ancestry lived.

  • @jamesellsworth9673

    There are SO MANY things to react to in this wonderful video. FIRSTLY, YOU are ALIVE and we can feel your JOY of living! SECONDLY, the reminder of YOUR heritage brings memories of Norse storytellers from the Viking era. OF COURSE, YOU are a great Nordic storyteller of our time.🤩 My family forebears were always interested in their roots: I recently had a DNA analysis done by a respected genealogical lab: somewhere in the past, I have Norwegian ancestry...just a little bit. I ALWAYS ENJOY fine winter scenery from your neighborhood. THANKS FOR YOUR EFFORTS.

    Raised in the American South ( Appalachian Mountains ) Granny always made buckwheat pancakes topped with either molasses, homegrown honey or gravy. She used it for soups and stews with rabbit, squirrel, deer or whatever we trapped or hunted. She was Norwegian/German. Buckwheat bread or cornbread is king here in the South. Totally underrated as a nutritional food source in good or bad times.

  • @kornfedboy
    @kornfedboy 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Buckwheat is a seed that's considered a "psuedo cereal". I love buckwheat served simply with butter and a little sea salt! I definitely think there is a "genetic memory" when it comes to food and climate. My ancestry is all from northern Europe and I find the foods of the Scandinavian north are my favorite comfort foods.

    Another awesome video and you are absolutely bang-on about genetic memory and being called to the outdoors. Buckwheat is very under-appreciated in North America. We incorporate buckwheat flour into a lot of our baking (eg. bread, muffins, pancakes.. we even have a video where we made buckwheat bannock to go with our pumpkin soup: 🍁 Maple-Pumpkin Soup: An Early Spring Lunch in the Hardwoods, if you are interested and / or have time). Buckwheat is a darker and denser flour but has so many nutritional benefits. Again, thanks for all you share and we are glad to see you getting back to full health! Cheers from some Canadian fans! 🇨🇦

    Aboriginals had a
    "shared memory" ,particularly the locstion of water sources .

    Takk for en fin video Lars. Flott å se at det går bedre med deg. Nå ble jeg inspirert til gå ut en tur i skogen her i Innlandet (Norge). Kanskje lage meg noe godt mat, slik som du gjorde.

    My partner at work tested positive of the dirty c word two weeks ago...he had a mild head ache from it. It is strange how it hits some differently than others.
