  • Introduction and table disassembly. No kits! I'll be making my own parts and sharing where I buy components. I'm not a machinist and have zero experience with CNC, but those don't sound like reasons not to try it. This will be a long term project and videos may be spaced out, but stay with me, I'll get there eventually.

    You don't deserve any thumbs down! I would give you two thumbs up if I could. Very well done. I too share your interrest in the CNC approach but have no experience. Sure do appreciate your sharing this.

    I just noticed that someone has went through and thumbs downed all the videos in this project. Not that I'm particularly moved one way or the other over that fact, but I am curious. Is it me? The subject matter? The style of the videos? The info? If there's something I can improve upon just let me know. I'd rather see a negative comment than a thumbs down, at least I'd know why that way.

      I have a very small youtube channel (not this user and smaller than yours) and I have probably close to the same amount on likes as dislikes :/ some people are just trolls.

      TH-cam is absolutely loaded with stupid people that feed off of being negative and ruining people's days. your videos are great man, keep it going 👊💥

      Thanks, guess I just don't like cowards. If I'm going to thumbs down someone, I'll tell them why. It's up to them to take it or leave it, but at least they will know why. Actually, I don't think I've ever gave anyone a thumbs down.

    I've seen people give thumbs down on Clicksprings videos without explanation which really miffed me. His work is awesome.
    I wouldn't worry about it.

      It's not that I worry about it, I just think if there's something I need to improve on, I'd just like to know. I'm not a great personality on video and I'm not that great at editing or storytelling. I'm still trying to learn and get better, but you can't learn from someone just clicking an up or down. Thanks for the comment.

    People that can't do anything decent (just like this great build) love to tear others down. Seriously… It's jealousy at It's worst. I really appreciate the time and effort you (and others) put into theses vids! Books are great for DIY but to see it and hear it described works much better in my opinion.
    So thanks and don't let the bastards get you down!

      +thoms_here Thanks. They don't get me down, mostly just curious. I always try to get to better at what ever I'm doing, so I just wanted to know what they disliked.

      saw a few of your videos wow .. nice hardware. its a lot more expensive to mod these than i initially thought. Ill have save up for mini mill ..
      then find surplus stepper motors and then find someone to make me what i need. I have a LOT to learn. ;> happy holidays.

    You mentioned in the intro, that you are not a machinist.
    I wish guys coming in looking to fill machinist job openings at my shop were as knowledgeable as you are.
    I'm went to Wentworth and have been working as a machinist / CNC set up and programmer for 40 years, so I've seen some guys that should not be calling themselves machinists over the years.
    Good video. Machine safely. Take care.

      Thanks Keith. I think it's pretty common in all industries, seems like young guys especially are coming in with very limited life experience in general.

    In the 70s and 80s, the processors and most of the peripherals of all Soviet computers were Bulgarian! Even the computer of the Mir space station was all Bulgarian. It broke after 15 years. And it was made in only 3 years of work.

    Wow you are doing a great job making your own. I have been that way since I was yeah hi. Still making my own. I plan on building a HF mini mill like you did hopefully I can find cheaper ball screws and nuts. They try to rob you now days.
    Good luck

    awesome build. like the fact you are making instead of buying a kit. i am new to cnc just bought a ox cnc open source. want to do one of these to cut metals. i just want to know why not just add a stepper motor to the handles instead of taking apart and adding ball screws ? just a dumb question. hope you finish your shop and start on the build .

    • @SelfMadeProject
      @SelfMadeProject  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for checking it out. To get any decent accuracy for a cnc mill, you have to use ball screws. The "lead" screws they come with would have too much friction and backlash to be any good. You could use a stepper directly on the machine as a power table feed, just not positioning.

    Thumbs from humble me. I never new what the ball nut chaser was. I hope I got it right. In lieu of this could you make a adapter to the original x and y handles?

    • @SelfMadeProject
      @SelfMadeProject  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The stepper motors I'm using do have a rear shaft output, so you probably could make an adapter to re-use the handles. I may still yet, not sure.

    i've had an X2 i've been tinkering with, still saving up a bit for some tooling, any recommendations? should I just DRO and manual mill, or is the CNC worth all the effort?
    I have a belt drive kit and gas-piston conversion waiting to go on. only kits i've seen to get me started so far are the little machine shop starter kits, i think their "precision" kit is right at like $300 or so?

    • @SelfMadeProject
      @SelfMadeProject  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Is converting it to cnc worth it? Well, I don't really know yet. I haven't finished the conversion due to finishing my shop first. This project is on hold until I get my shop wired, insulated, ceiling in, etc. I couldn't stand it any longer, but I'm ready to get back on this little guy. I guess my first question back to you would be, have you ever used a milling machine? If no, then absolutely use it as a manual mill first and learn about it and what it's capable of doing. Most tooling is the same whether manual or cnc, so start building up either way. Have you got a set of collets yet? That's a biggie. Dial indicators? A Vise (another biggie)? A T-slot clamp/hold-down set? Parallels, edge finders, etc.? I'm sure some other guys on here can offer more advice too.

    is it possible to have some drawing which parts to make ahead of dissasembly ?
    to use mill 1st to make these parts and then do upgrade .btw good job :)

    • @SelfMadeProject
      @SelfMadeProject  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are a couple guys selling drawings. So far on this project, I'm largely relying on drawings from Hoss Machine, which I purchased. They're not exactly plans, mainly just drawings, so you still have a lot to figure out. I've also found other guys that freely shared drawings on cnc forums, machinist forums, etc. I spent many hours collecting info, it's out there if you search. I'm kind of cherry picking the best from everything.
