    This guy works with what he has got. Can't blame him for that.

      No you can’t. But I think he would benefit greatly by purchasing a few “ basic” machinist tools.
      Even cheap ones. Starting with a DTI even a cheap one . $20-$30

    Ima thinking about removing the dovetails and putting in linear rails for the z axis

    The best ways to measure a dovetail is using two gage pins or a set of Cameron Balls. And ya you need a milling vise or a small tool makers vise to keep the parts square.

    • @Mikesmeyer88
      @Mikesmeyer88 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yea I keep seeing people with these drill press vises and it looks like it's putting too much leverage on the bed and it's moving. I don't think you need anything bigger than 3 inch vise on a 3 inch bed

    Backlash is not play in the ways! Backlash is play in the lead screws or nuts.

      Those really cheap mini mills probly do have play in the ways as well ! You can pick them up an walk off ! No rigidity ....

    A nice Mitutoyo dial calipers with a $7 drilling vice, not made for milling?? Not good!

      Yeah, that vice is a drilling vice not intended for milling.....EVER.

      Yes, buy a milling vice, not a drilling vice. See below link.

    I hope you weren't considering using this video as a tuition device for those that have never used a mill......it would be better to use it to show what you might be able to do with this quite modest but handy and very economically priced mill when you get a bit better at it.

      I really like the size of these machines, they don’t take up a lot of room, if I really need a big part made, there’s plenty of people that have big machines that you can ask to borrow a little bit of time on them. There’s an off a lot of small projects that can be done on the small machines. Do you have to compensate for backlash and a few other downfalls but overall we’re happy with the machines. Thanks for your thoughts

      @@livefree6878 You know people who would let you use their milling machine ? That's unheard of . I won't even let anyone in my shop let along use a machine !! Its because most people have no clue what their doing and would get hurt ! For instance ,.. look at the vise your using , That vice is not supposed to be used for milling , Its for drill press only and there's a very good reason for it . You may get hurt very badly one day using that vice in the mill.

    Why not just cut a picatinny rail on top and make the bottom fit your handgun? And yes trim the fingernails.

    Thanks for the video, Im new to machining and I learn something from most machining videos, but I will add to the chorus of comments and say clearly you use the term "precision" in relative terms. Lol..... but it is a learning process and we all have something to teach and learn

    Y’all need to stop it with the fingernails. Homie is probably shredding bluegrass after a day of being a badass on the mill. Stop whining on TH-cam and get more hobbies all of you.

    WHAT'S WITH THE FINGER NAILS ??? KINDA CREEPY ON A GUY ! OH WAIT , I'M SORRY I DIDN'T MEAN TO JUST ASSUME . WHITH THINGS BEING WHAT THEY ARE NOW A DAYS...

  • @nicholasscholten
    @nicholasscholten 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    You don't use inches or fractions of inches when you're working with "precision" stuff. You use millimeters and fractions of millimeters. :P Inches are best used for anything between a 25.4mm (1") and 1 foot, and then fractions of feet. Fractions of inches are what machinists have nightmares about.

    • @notanymore9471
      @notanymore9471 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      nicholasscholten you obviously don’t work in manufacturing. We use the decimal imperial system all day and no that doesn’t mean millimeters.

    • @ctrlaltdebug
      @ctrlaltdebug 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      No you use milli-inches.

    • @stevelamperta865

      I don't know who told you that , but they were not a machinist ! That's not true at all ! Do you really think milling machines an lathes , shapers are all restricted to mm ? what a dumb ass ! Glad I work on my own projects.

    • @Lawtonfl
      @Lawtonfl 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No you've got that backwards, metric is what gives machinists nightmares
