How To Remove Your Leopard Geckos Stuck Shed

  • Leopard geckos shed frequently as babies and less as adults because they shed as they grow. When shedding your leo will turn a grey colour and might seek a damp place like their moist hide. To remove their shed they will use their mouth to grab off the shed and then eat it, but sometimes things don't work out for them and they need a bit of help. Here I explain with the help of Marmalade, how to help your leo remove that unwanted stuck shed.
    If you have any questions feel free to comment or contact me and I will do my best to help.

    Ye so i luckily found this video at the exact moment my gecko finished shedding, she has MBD as well from her original owners and has stuck shed sadly. I soaked her a bit in the sauna and her feet sheddings would not come off. I had to hold her in my hand and hold her sheddings while she squirmed, got the feet sheddings off luckily, and she ate the rest on her tail. So she made a full shed! Im a very new owner and have never had a reptile before either so, it was tricky, i only had her 2 weeks. But i cant thank u enough for this video, ur a lifesaver, for me and my gecko! 🦎🦎🦎🦎🦎

      She is definitely underweight here yes. She took quite a while to start eating well and was super picky about what foods to eat. Because of this she was underweight here and it contributed to her bad shedding as well. She also has MBD due to a lack of calcium in her diet due to her picky diet. Overall not a gecko in great health unfortunately but she has improved a good bit since😊

    I got my girl Cheesecake from a friend who recieved her as a surrender. She's a Diablo Blanco but she was surrendered because she has scoliosis, making her spine and tail bend in an odd way and making it hard for her to shed. She normally sheds well but it's been very hot recently and almost all of it is still there. I'm hoping giving her a little sauna will help get it all off.

      @@RachelsReptiles update: It went fantastic! All of the shed is gone and as it turns out for some reason there were 2 layers of shed on her head and the rest of her body had a complete layer! Poor baby was super uncomfortable. Once I got all of it off (a 2 hour endeavor I found that the 2 layers of shed had forced one of her eyes closed and I had to clean off quite a bit of gunk but no eye infection. She's albino do I hadn't noticed because she squints every time I open her bin. She's all better now, although you were quite right about them sometimes just stopping you to do it themselves. She stopped me just to pull at the sock of shed on her front claw but ultimately I had to help her out. Thanks for the informative video!

    hello!! i have a leopard gecko, i like to say she’s a baby but she’s almost old enough to be a juvenile *i believe, the store never told me how old she was:(* i’ve had her for about a month now, and she’s coming around to me! she likes to climb all over my hands, and sometimes up to my face to lick me:) she shed a little while ago, maybe 2/3 days ago and there’s still the tiniest bit hanging on the her legs (but not around her toes). she’s super curious but also a very scared gecko! i don’t want to freak her out my doing a bath type thing like you showed because she just got used to me and i don’t want to lose the trust... should i let her get it off or do a little bath? it doesn’t bother her at all, it’s just the tiniest pieces in two of her legs. if you could give me your input that’d be greatly appreciated!!

    • @RachelsReptiles
      @RachelsReptiles  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If it's flat on her legs and not all the way around where it might constrict bloodflow I'd suggest leaving it be for a few days. When handling see if she will let you rub against her legs with your finger occasionally and hopefully she will either get it off herself or your rubbing will loosen it so she can get it off the rest of the way😊 alternatively put some wet tissue/kitchen towel/paper towel (or whatever it's called where you are) into a lunchbox and then put her in. Put half the lunchbox near a heat source like a hear mat or lamp and let her chill in there for 5/10 minutes. Make sure she has air! This will steam up like a little sauna and help loosen the skin 😁
      If it's all the way around the leg like a cuff I'm afraid you'll have to do the bath because it could affect bloodflow and become more difficult to remove as time goes on.
      Good luck!😊

      If they have stuck shed currently you should try a shallow warm bath to try help gently remove it before the next shed.
      If there's no stuck shed currently just keep an eye on the next shed and make sure nothing is left behind😊

      This girl is a WY mix but visually you cannot correctly identify morphs because many look very very similar and any heterozygous (hidden) genes cannot be seen visually. This girl visually could be a tremper albino, a raptor mix, a WY mix or any other assortment of genes so for your own you really cannot say except that they are some strain of albino maybe😊

    What do I do if my gecko has stuck shed and won’t let me pick them up?

    • @Ella-Bella.x07
      @Ella-Bella.x07 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Take a cotton q-tip, dip it in mineral oil, and use the q-tip as a peeler. Or you can keep giving your leopard gecko warm water to soak in i advise using a q-tip because it is easier than the second option

    • @RachelsReptiles
      @RachelsReptiles  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you're really stuck trying to get them out of their tank put a clear plastic lunchbox over them and VERY CAREFULLY slide the lid underneath them. When they're in that box you can gently tip then into another lunchbox with warm water for them to walk around in. Then do like I did using a cotton bud to roll the stuck shed off them😊 it's a lot of patience!

    Hi :) so I have a tremper albino and she’s a rescue out of a petstore and I saw she had like 3-4 layers of shed on her toes. With some of them I’ve been able to take them off but it takes about 15 to 20 minutes for one toe and it’s really hard, she’s pretty calm but it’s still hard to do. I’ve put her in a bath multiple times but it just doesn’t do the job. Do you have any tips?

    • @RachelsReptiles
      @RachelsReptiles  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Honestly it's just perseverance! Keep doing baths and spend the time it takes to get them off. If you got one toe done each day that would be enough to save that specific toe. Once stuck shed is removed her next shed should either leave no stuck toes, or will be able to come off super easy because it's only one fresh layer😊

      @@RachelsReptiles ah okay thank you, though will that not stress her out? Giving her a bath every day?

    • @RachelsReptiles
      @RachelsReptiles  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If she is pretty calm like you say, 15 minutes each evening won't stress her out terribly. If you think she's getting too stressed you could do every second day, but the longer it takes to get to those toes the more likely she loses them.
