I understand how this feels so extraordinary in America, but here in big european cities, it's definitely NOT uncommon to live in such a small space ! Love the layout of her studio, it feels really homey and quite spacious for the size.
True, definitely not uncommon in some other parts of the world, but certainly not the norm in the U.S. It is important that smaller spaces are built efficiently.
I lived in a micro studio in Nashville with all bills paid! It was honestly 100% worth it. Easy to clean, you’re forced to not over spend on material items, cheaper than 1 bedrooms and if there’s amenities it’s sooo worth it! I loved my micro studio.
@@ItsInstinctKnives yes! I loved them. Street parking though unless you wanna pay extra a month. Laundry was about $2 for wash and $2 for dry (a little less maybe) and you could pay with an app. The all bills paid was the best part!
It makes me uncomfortable that these are being touted as the next thing. (I am/was subbed to a bunch of minimalist and small home channels.) There needs to be a discussion on why celebrities and the rich have no problem living in multi thousand square foot homes and the rest of us plebs are struggling. As well, if the government goes and does another lock down, how is anyone suppose to have two weeks (or more, lol) of food? That fridge is tiny. To each their own (and I'm so happy Margarita loves her place & small places are excellent ways to get into the housing market) and I think we all have a bit too much "stuff" but seeing celebrities/rich/powerful buy multiple houses that have rooms dedicated for artwork, a second kitchen, ten bedrooms with eleven bathrooms for a family of three, I really got to wonder why this juxtaposition isn't talked about.
I'm so glad that someone said this because it's been on my mind a lot lately. Whether it's renting or buying regular people are being priced out of housing markets in nearly every city and told to spend more and more for increasingly small spaces. Microstudios are great for some, but we're accelerating towards a future where folks are going to live in glorified cubbies while the wealthy create single-family homes that take up entire zip codes.
Not to play devil's advocate but celebrities get paid by how much business they bring to a particular brand/movie/show etc. So if a company like ABC/Disney makes a show like "Grey's Anatomy", which has brought in 3 billion dollars to the company since it premiered, of course they need to get paid what they are worth to the company. Plus celebrities have no privacy once they leave their houses so their houses have to be big...they don't go out as much as you would think because of all the attention they get outside their home. So yes, if you have the money and spend a lot of time at home...get a big house. Of course, the mega mansions are disgusting but really that has to do with zoning issues and whatever policy one's local government has with building those huge structures. Some cities say "do what you want' and others have strict zoning laws.
If I earned between 5 to 10k a month I'd definitely live in a place like this, at least for a year or two while or after college, it's a great opportunity to save some money, whether to invest or just have some savings. but definitely don't see an issue in getting a big apartment or house. Just not with neighbors close by or window to window.
When you’re coming from a place where rent is high, affordable micro studios are worth it. I live in the Bay Area, California and lived in a 200sq ft mirco studio downtown San Jose for only $1400 with parking. Compared to $2000+ for studios in the area it was a no brainer for me. The extra savings was worth it.
The girl is smart. She knows how to save and have the lifestyle she wants. Yes to microliving. This is a huge space and shw has everything. I big bed, kitchen and of course a big bathroom. You can spent the rest of ypur money traveling and making memories. Yes to micro spacing. Loved it. I hope ypu make a video on microsoft as well.
It reminds me of a dorm but it makes a lot of sense if you’re living alone. I don’t know how I’d feel living with another person in a small space but alone it seems fine. And the lounge/gym/outdoor areas were really cool!
If I was 22 and right out of college I could totally see myself living in a space this size. But now that I'm in my late 20s I just have more need for closet space/ storage. But I do see how the space affects the lifestyle.
I looked at a LOT of micro studios and lofts in the area when I was apartment hunting, but didn’t find anything that met my needs (full time artist and designer with a LOT of necessary tools/paint that goes with that, and two cats). Ultimately, I ended up getting an open 1-br that is close to the i90 on-ramp since I work on the East side as well. The cats love it since they now have 3/4 walls to jump up high on and privacy to do their “business”. I love it because the kitchen is galley style which leaves the rest of the space open for my creative passions and work stuff. My commute has been cut in half from where I used to live as well, which is great since my company only lets us work remote two days a week.
For certain a tour of Microsoft would be cool, especially getting on that Microsoft bus. Cool tour and interview of an actual small apartment. I was a little claustrophobic at first, but then warmed up to the place.
I could live here for sure. For a tiny place you get a lot of benefits. All the amenities, a normal size bath, nice windows, great kitchen with laundry. This is a little gem, way to go!
I was in a similar size hotel room for a week in Queens, NY. As long as you get out during the day and come back in the evening to sleep, you feel just fine and normal....
Hey Monica, great video and thanks for making this video as it’s important to highlight the rising rental rates in Seattle. Giving you lots of love from Women in Tech. Specially in Seattle we live in the city coming from various backgrounds and even though we have decent tech salaries, people fail to understand the cost of living in Seattle as well as necessities of safe communities and being smarter with money as most of us have loans to payback. This is great content and echoes so much with tech crowd and issues they face in daily lives.
what's crazy is that the $999 that was showed at the beginning is listed as the MFTE price, which is a low-income restricted price. So the actual rent she's paying is even higher than that.
Micro living is great! I live in a 30ft 5th wheel RV outside of Portland. I've started working in Seattle so hopefully I'll find a good parking space to move up here. Until then I stay on a 34 ft boat. I really like having less stuff to haul around and it makes so much sense financially.
This apartment is a great layout and an amazing deal. Wish affordable, functional apartments like this existed in NYC. Paid $1300 for a 200sq studio in Queens in 2017. It was a now frills dump.
I lived in 188sq ft. for 6 1/2 yrs. It makes you realize it's all you really need. But storage is very important and vertical storage makes a big difference. This young lady is very intelligent and sensible.
I am SO early. I have been a long time subscriber since high school, around 2012. Ten years dude! It has been so great to see you and Shelby grow up. I grew up with your channels, videos. So happy for you
Very smart of her! I've lived with multiple roommates at the dorm and I can relate. Almost all roommates were just angels but that one roommate can make your hair go grey in just a semester.
It looks great for 170sf. Really love this place. All the modern conveniences, and washer/dryer in unit!. Just bedroom w/desk and kitchen wall. And it is a real apartment with bathroom & kitchen. As 22 year old, she is set for a few years.
Yes to a Microsoft tour! I’m not sure I could live in that small a space but I thought the space was layed out well. I do think a small space would keep you from buying unnecessary stuff.
I just moved from a 450sf apartment so I think I could make this work but I would need a supplemental storage unit or something for camping gear/winter clothes/etc. The bathroom was a good size and there are lots of things she could do to add storage if necessary, like shelving or underbed boxes.
Can you do videos comparing suburb cities near Seattle? For example I have lived in Renton, Maple Valley, Kent, Fed Way, etc- would be interesting to see comparisons between those kinds of cities for people interested in living NEAR Seattle but not in it.
This looks great to me. If I was young, single and didn’t have a hobby that took up a lot of space this would be perfect for me. I’m just surprised about how the thumb nail makes it seem like $100k a year is not much money.
agreed... maybe people in tech make over 100k in Seattle. Her boyfriend does, not sure if he is in tech... Although he is a male... for a 22 year old to make 100k and only spend 10% on her housing is amazing!
In Seattle 100K is minimum wage it's really hard to survive on 100,000 or anything less than that just for one person let alone if you have a family. I have also lived in a few of these micro apartments in Seattle and they run more like 1300 to 1800 now not including utilities parking pet rent. Also note that a lot of places charge you to park at work usually around 2 to 500 a month. Also to park in the apartment complex it's usually around 200 to $300 a month. Pet rent is usually anywhere from 50 to $100 a month.
Older buildings in Seattle are where it's at! I live in a 2 bedroom renovated 80's building (Cap Hill) with parking and a storage unit for $1750 with my partner and we love it!
She did miss some usable space under the bed. I have lived a few years in small apartments, 400 sq feet is about the minimum for me, I lived in a space that was 64 sq ft and quickly found that having to dress and remember to grab keys just to go to the bathroom sucks. $1000/month for anything smaller than 500 sq ft is ridiculous.
i downsized last winter from a 2700sqft 3 bedroom+ library+ bonus room with 3 car garage house to 300 sqft studio with attached 300 sqft storage- still haven't quite adjusted yet
What do you want them to do? Not accept a job there? I had to move to Seattle because they were the only offers I got in 8 months. Lotta people there don't want to move but have to because that's where the tech jobs are.
I’ve been looking at micro lofts because in reality with me and my husband and our dog and cat. We currently live in a space that’s 6ft by 12ft and half of our life lives in storage. So I love micro lofts because I don’t need a lot of space and since we work opposite schedules normally only one person is home at a time.
YEEEEEEESSSSSS please do a tour of Microsoft if possible. My sister lives in the Seattle area and worked for Microsoft for many years. I would love to see a video with you riding the connector bus and touring the facility. Awesome video idea!!
I did this in NYC except I had 2 roommates and we all had our own room with one kitchen and a bath and a half. It's doable on the cheap if you spend the time to look. I did it for almost 5 years and saved a shit ton of money. I was her age. It is the way to go.
I did NOT know we had a Daiso in the USA!!! I was introduced to it when I lived in Korea. I wonder if the prices are comparable here. I love small spaces. I purposely looked for a small updated studio apartment. Less to clean. Less to furnish. I can use my money on other things.
That is actually not bad for a micro studio. The fact it has a full kitchen and washer and dryer is rare for those at least from what I've seen. I looked at a couple micro studios when I first moved to Seattle in Greenwood and Maple Leaf and couldn't bring myself to pay the $700-800/month (back in 2015) for them and opted to have roommates in single family homes instead. Neither had their own kitchen and only one had parking for extra money. I'm guessing she is living minimally and saving money to buy her own place at some point or just keep costs to a minimum which is really smart. I bought a 600sqft condo with garage and only pay a little more than she does thanks to saving money so it shows you how buying still is better value over renting. Even 600sqft seems small but I can't even imagine living in 170sqft these days, I'm pretty sure the rooms I rented in the past were larger.
I like that size if the walls are good to keep from hearing the neighbors. I don't think this micro apartment was an option, so I always had roommates until I bought a house. Now I'm not sure if I could get rid of enough stuff to fit without a storage unit as back up lol.
I feel ashamed of complaining about not having enough drawers or space which I definitely do lol and i feel so good when she keeps saying everything in a positive way “it’s full size” like she is happy with what she got. Inspired lol❤️
Great video and fascinating! With the housing crisis in California (and many other places) we need wayyy more of these microunits/studios and less large 5 bedroom houses to help with the issue of supply and demand. And a definite yes to a tour of the Connect bus and visiting the new Microsoft campus! Well done to her for managing her money well.
Way to small for me but the fact it has a washer/dryer in unit I could do it on the short term if I just needed to take over a friends lease while I was in between leases. I would also have to pay for a storage unit for the majority of my stuff though.
I moved from beijing to Texas 10 years ago. This space is spacious for Beijing! But I can’t adapt back anymore now that I have lived in Texas for 10 years!
If only there was a larger fridge, I'd definitely have lived in this kind of place out of college. I was fortunate to find a 0 bedroom condo for just under $1000 that was ~400 sq ft when I first rented a place by myself in the greater Seattle area (and it had a pool!)
Isn't there some way to build a loft? Or get a loft-style bed where you can have some sort of seating area underneath? I have seen smaller spaces designed better to offer more options. This feels like you just plopped your bed in the kitchen. Definitely dorm living. (There are single dorm rooms and honestly, those are kind of bigger because the kitchen is outside of the dorm. Okay the kitchen is shared, but I don't want to sleep in my kitchen.)
I wasn't expecting to see my old apartment building. Moved this month bc of parking but other than that, the place is great if you get a unit with a washer/dryer combo :)
Brilliant use of the space, it has a washing machine. Plus she has all these community rooms to go to. I like how the clothing storage is quite bi, but airy. She could have put a wardrobe there, but it would have made the space look much smaller.
This would be a great option if you lived out of town and needed a place to stay in the City during the week. Not yet willing to trade-in 3,600 sq foot house with very large lot and 3-car garage; but as a second space or for work it would be great!
This is a great choice for someone who travels a lot for work or spends a few nights a week sleeping at a partner's space. I guess it makes sense too if you have friends over and can spend time in a common space. The landlords make so much money though in this type of housing.
I know which building this is because I used to live right near there! The rents are now minimum about 1150, some almost 1300. She’s getting a good deal at under 1000.
To put it bluntly, housing without compromise does not exist in the Seattle area. It just doesn't. If it's cheaper than typical market rate it might be fairly dingy, like 40-50+ years old or in a really sketchy area. This building is really nice and if you don't have a family a smaller space is a no brainer of a compromise to make. My advise in general would be spend a bit more money than you initially were planning on. Your daily environment is a big deal for your mental health.
I have a video request! I am a National Park enthusiast and am visiting Olympic National Park next summer. I'd love to throw in San Juan Island National Historical Park but it seems intimidating as an East-coast'er. The ferry, a car reservation, etc. You should do a real estate video about San Juan Island and also how to get there!!
No dedicated living room area. To me having a living room that guests can sit in is essential. My studio apartment is $660 monthly with at least 400-500 square feet. It’s in mid condition so I assume your price for the studio is associated with its location.
I think only thing is missing is parking and full kitchen but it is Capitol Hill so it is understandable. Some people still need car to get to work cuz not everyone is in tech. Monica you should do Microsoft tour!
I live in a micro studio in london (I think mine is actually smaller than hers) and i love it. The best thing about them is that it makes you spend less on unnecessary purchases because of the limited space that you have. It's definitely the right move if you want to save money in the long run

Depends on location. Downtown Seattle? It's a steal.
i downsized last winter from a 2700sqft 3 bedroom+ library+ bonus room with 3 car garage house to 300 sqft studio with attached 300 sqft storage- still haven't quite adjusted yet
I could easily live there. Good bathroom, small kitchen. I love it.
Tech workers are making Seattle so unaffordable!!! It’s upsetting honestly
Yes it’s so annoying
What do you want them to do? Not accept a job there? I had to move to Seattle because they were the only offers I got in 8 months. Lotta people there don't want to move but have to because that's where the tech jobs are.
I love it
Man, I would’ve loved to have done this when I was younger. It would’ve been perfect moving to Seattle and saving money and being cozy
CONGRATULATIONS ❤️

It’s so nice and elegant for you to present her flowers
Super cool look inside! Great move for someone getting into their career or moving somewhere for the first time 🙌
I feel ashamed of complaining about not having enough drawers or space which I definitely do lol and i feel so good when she keeps saying everything in a positive way “it’s full size” like she is happy with what she got. Inspired lol❤️
About to rent one myself at the end of the month. I honestly love pretty minimalistic and don’t need a lot so I feel this will be prefect for me
OMG I would absolutely LOVE to see a video of a Microsoft campus tour!
I LOVE this and I had no clue this was even possible!
I recognize this building!! I lived there from July 2019-January 2022! I was on the 1st floor and had a great experience
What building is this
@@foggycraw6758 “rise” it’s in Rosevelt right by portage bay and whole foods
Great video and fascinating! With the housing crisis in California (and many other places) we need wayyy more of these microunits/studios and less large 5 bedroom houses to help with the issue of supply and demand.
And a definite yes to a tour of the Connect bus and visiting the new Microsoft campus! Well done to her for managing her money well.
Way to small for me but the fact it has a washer/dryer in unit I could do it on the short term if I just needed to take over a friends lease while I was in between leases. I would also have to pay for a storage unit for the majority of my stuff though.
*Monica, the editing on this video is fantastic!*

I moved from beijing to Texas 10 years ago. This space is spacious for Beijing! But I can’t adapt back anymore now that I have lived in Texas for 10 years!

In Japan there are apartments that are even smaller, down to capsule hotel size/coffin homes 😳
Great job Margarita!!!
Yes to Microsoft tour. I could totally live micro.
Great video, first time here, looking forward to more
If only there was a larger fridge, I'd definitely have lived in this kind of place out of college. I was fortunate to find a 0 bedroom condo for just under $1000 that was ~400 sq ft when I first rented a place by myself in the greater Seattle area (and it had a pool!)

How much is your rent here and how big is your apartment? 1bed? And congratulations on your graduation!!!
What is it called?

Tech salary living in a micro is WILD! She's truly in her bag!! 🥵💰
Brilliant use of the space, it has a washing machine. Plus she has all these community rooms to go to. I like how the clothing storage is quite bi, but airy. She could have put a wardrobe there, but it would have made the space look much smaller.
I can't wait for Mini Moe AirStream. You're the best, Monica.
its feels like alot bigger than a parking spot, how does that work out?
I loved this video, pls do more of these
This would be a great option if you lived out of town and needed a place to stay in the City during the week. Not yet willing to trade-in 3,600 sq foot house with very large lot and 3-car garage; but as a second space or for work it would be great!

Love it -- thank you for sharing❣
This is a great choice for someone who travels a lot for work or spends a few nights a week sleeping at a partner's space. I guess it makes sense too if you have friends over and can spend time in a common space. The landlords make so much money though in this type of housing.
I know which building this is because I used to live right near there! The rents are now minimum about 1150, some almost 1300. She’s getting a good deal at under 1000.
address please? I'm looking for something similar
“I will show you what it looks like”
after second inside
“Yeah this is basically it”
this makes me want to give you a tour of my upper queen anne apartment . after I actually .... furnish the place lol
Great video 👏👏👏
That studio is half the size of my bedroom. Yes to Microsoft walk through Monica.
Lowkey coaxed her into revealing she makes 10k/month as a fresh grad working at Microsoft.
Honestly I could live there! It looks functional and comfy
Didn't you use to make a video like this in Los Angeles? Or was that Shelby Church?
I have a video request! I am a National Park enthusiast and am visiting Olympic National Park next summer. I'd love to throw in San Juan Island National Historical Park but it seems intimidating as an East-coast'er. The ferry, a car reservation, etc. You should do a real estate video about San Juan Island and also how to get there!!

IIRC the other couple before had a cat, but I do think that small space gets more difficult when you need a space for their litter box and food/water
The apartment looks bigger than a parking spot/airstream? I'm confused
Very interesting! Thank you for making this video and sharing.

Monica you should do Microsoft tour!
those $900 prices are only MFTE meaning less than 36k a year FYI. Otherwise its about $1200
Yes I would live in one. I'm a senior and that is less space to travel to get an item. 😆🤣
