- Listen to 12 of the most iconic bird calls from the Southern African region. There are others that I could have added to this list but these are the 12 most iconic and well-known calls from our region, in my opinion. I will make another video featuring some of the others. Can you think of other bird calls that are really iconic to this region? Post them in the comments below.
Good news! Part 2 of this series can be seen here:
• 12 MORE ICONIC BIRD CA...
Love all those bird calls some come to our garden❤
You are so lucky to get some of them in your garden.
I love this, please do more❤🥳
I'm already making a list for the part 2 of this series. People on the Facebook groups have been so helpful to think of other bird calls for the next part of the series.
Lovely collection Lynette. Looking forward to what will included in Part 2...
Busy working on part 2 now.
Thanks for this compilation.
Glad you enjoyed it
This time of the year there are plenty we have green parakeets in our trees❤
Pity they aren't indigenous to SA. They are exotics.
Would love more. Thank you 😊
More to come! Watch this space!
My favourites are the Hadedas. I moved into my current abode 4yrs ago and found a group of 5 overnighting on the neighbour's roof. They have since moved to my rooftop and l have just this week welcomed the latest crop of new chicks to the family. They communicate with passing groups., drink and bathe in and from the swimmig pool and patrol the surrounding houses' lawns. First sounds in the morning. Love their irridiscent plumage after a rainstorm.
That is so special. I love them so much. Special birds.
The cry of the fish eagle is Africa for me..gives me goosebumps whenever I hear it.
I agree. No call quite like it.
Always! And the night jar.
Best bird sound
Truly Iconic - we have a pair living in our valley.
Thank You, sending love to You❤❤❤
Thank you too!
Thank you - what a wonderful visit to my beloved Africa. The familiar sounds of Piet me vrou, the delightful squabbles of the guineafowl, and the somehow antediluvian sounds of the majestic hadeda. Lovely trip down memory lane
Glad it brought you back to Africa. There is no place like it on earth.

So true! 😊
Piet-my-vrou, though (my)
Wonderful collection of bird sounds
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it.
Thanx very interesting to hear these 12 bird sounds
Glad you enjoyed it
Dankie, Lynette! Dit is pragtig om na te luister. Die tarentale is my gunsteling, hoewel nie die mooiste van almal nie, maar uit en uit Afrika.
Dit is groot plesier!
Wow...what a special compilation! Thank you so much...I have sent it to my family overseas who will feel very homesick for SA when they hear these gorgeous bird calls! 😊
Our pleasure! Watch out for part 2 in this series. So many people have sent me a list of birds that I should have featured in the first video, so I'll make a part 2 soon.
Wonderful! Thank you very much. Their sounds and songs are extremely beautiful.
Yes they are!
Thanks for sharing ❤
You are so welcome
The most memorable experience I have had with birds was when one day seven to ten Green Wood-Hoopoes sat in a tree close to me and they started bopping their heads up and down while performing a group song. I will never forget that.
That is very special to watch. I've been so privileged to watch them nesting in a tree and raising chicks. I love their cackling call.
This is lovely. Thank you.
Glad you like it!
Some of them were totally new to me but now I've saved them for my next trip to the bush. Thankyou I really enjoyed the film of them too😊
Glad it was helpful!
Beautifull!❤
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it.
Awesome Thank you
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it!
Oooh the hadeda`s - rude awakening call of the hadeda`s in the morning!
I love the Hadeda call. They roost in a large tree in my garden at night.
@lynetterudman A pair of Hadeda's in my tree, too. Eastern Cape.
Lynette! Goeiste! Hoekom met die Hadeda's eindig! Verpes hulle! Baie dankie, dit was heerlik om te luister.
Hadedas are really cool. One of the loudest birds in SA but also one of my favourites. Far more intelligent than we realise. I have a video about 10 reasons why we should love the Hadeda: th-cam.com/video/h0BNzZpaiBo/w-d-xo.html
Thank you Lynette they are awesome, love them all!! As @marinamunro says the Fish Eagle really is the sound of South Africa
Yip, the fish eagle is probably tops.
Stunning. Thank you so much
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it.
Love this.. Thank you...
You are so welcome!
Super thank you so much 😊😊😊
Glad you enjoyed it.
Great selection. Would have loved the Black-collared Barbet, Coucal and, maybe, Hamerkop included.
I can add them to the part 2 of the series. Watch this space ...
I 2nd the additions, please upload part 2!
Green wood hoopoe would be lovely plus more owls pse?
@@UserHilux579 I have a video with owl calls: th-cam.com/video/XVLrZ_FmxPQ/w-d-xo.html
+1 for the barbet and coucal
Awesome Thank You!!!❤❤❤❤😊
You are so welcome
Stunning video !
Thanks so much! Part 2 coming up soon. Watch this space.
This will help me play Birdle. Thank you
Glad I could help! My whole TH-cam channel is full of bird calls from all over southern Africa. Just search and you should find most bird calls from this region.
Great bird calls!
They are the 12 most memorable calls, in my opinion.
Baie interressant !
Dankie!
Enjoyed the sounds...my fav were the fish eagles and the owl ....
Those are cool calls.
I listened to both episodes but have not yet come across the birdsound that wakes us up in the Western Cape. It goes like "Two weet - two weet, two weet - two weet"
Love it
Glad you enjoyed it!
It's been more than a year since I last heard the Rrrrrrrrr of the Crested Barbet's call in Pretoria.
It's a call that you can't mistake. So unique.
Wonderful bird calls
Thanks. Part 2 coming up soon.
Well done
Glad you enjoyed it.
Very nice. Favorite by far is the woodland kingfisher and nightjar!
Blue crane was odd choice… and the hadeda, but it is quite unique so understand that one.. Natal spurfowl/crested francolin would have been my choice rather than the blue crane.
Some honourable mentions that are also iconic - kwevoel, diederik, Coucal, yellow billed hornbill, emeral spotted dove and southern boubou
I'll definitely consider those for the part 2 of this series.
Lovely
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it!
Loved it thank yo for sharing God Bless 🤩🤩😍😍
You are so welcome
Lovely !
Thanks for listening
Fantastic sighting of Red chested cuckoo
Yip, it was calling in a large tree in my garden.
Thank you Lynette how I miss the nightjars of the bushveld now that I recide in the Cape
thanks. what is most intrestering id that these birdl largley are limited to south sfrican teritority, spesificly in the intensity where they are found.
There are two reasons for this; firstly most occur on the eastern side of the subcontinent which is moister and has more vegetation etc and food for birds. The western parts are mostly desert. Then the second part is that the eastern parts are more heavily populated, therefore more people to hear the birds calling etc.
Great Choice. When I was in high school, I went on a guided walk through Kruger. I heard a bird that sounded like the pouring of liquid. The guide said it was a Black headed Oriole, and despite me searching and searching, I have not heard it again for any Oriole recording. To this day it perplexes and enchants me and i continue to seek it out. It sounded like pouring oil, with a tune. It was gorgeous. like a duluduluduludu descending but very liquid. Ai tog. :)
Try a Burchell's coucal which sounds similar to your description.
I agree, it sounds like a coucal call. Here is a video I got of two calling: th-cam.com/video/ie6AupF7o-I/w-d-xo.html
@stanleyrodgers967 A Burchells is a rather large bird, and very shy.
They hide in thick undergrowth. I've had them in my garden in Rondebosch Cape Town.
Nice!
Thanks!
Lol..I have a small family of Hadidas in my garden...I know that sound all too bloody well...
Hadedas are cool. I love them.
@@lynetterudman lol...don't mind them..but at 5:30 in the morning...wish they would sleep in on Sundays
Thank you Lynette - so enjoyed (except maybe for those d..... hadedas who get me at 5 a.m.! ) How about a Spookvoel?
The spookvoël will be in the part 2 of the series, as will the Southern Boubou and Black-headed Oriole and others.
Wonderful sounds of beautiful birds. My favourite night sounds is definitely the fiery necked nightjar but also African Scops Owl and Pearl Spotted Owlet
Thanks for sharing. I'll have to include some of these in my part 2 of this series.
Baie dankie. Dit was nou regtig baie interessant!
Dankie!
❤
Glad you like the video. More to come!
Baie mooi! Bokmakierie is die beste.
of soos hul in engels sê: goat-mother-walking-stick
Bokmakieries are awesome
The hadeda almost laughing waking up saffas for generations. Like ha ha no more sleep for you
Lol, that's so funny!
Hadedas is the best neighborhood watchers at night😂
Definitely! We once had a pair shout in our big tree at night and my hubby got up to check and someone had opened our gate by lifting it of the track.
🆒👀👍
Glad you enjoyed it!
Give us some more 4:55 j
Part 2 coming up soon. Watch this space!
Laughing Dove.
I'll need to add it to the part 2 video.
Your distribution maps on the guinea fowl and dove are inaccurate. Those birds are everywhere in botswana..
Thanks for the confirmation. I got them off SABAP 2. They need to update their maps.
It sounds like - Elephant Park/Coombs
I have done some recordings in the Coombs area. I need to do that route again soon. I often find Cape Sugarbirds on the proteas on that one road leading in from the Peddie road.
what about the rain bird?
Will definitely add it to the part 2 video in the series.
Emerald spotted wood dove?
I'm going to add it to the part 2 which I'm busy working on at the moment.
@@lynetterudman Great, thanks!
Very good. Why were the names of birds changed? Many names we grew up with from the 1950's were changed but some very clever people forcing us to buy new bird books. Basically unacceptable. Cape Turtle dove stays Cape Turtle dove and was a unique name and recognisable call. Now a bland Ring neck dove!
The names get changed by the International Ornithological Committee periodically. It's just so silly.
@@lynetterudman This is unacceptable. Where can I lodge a complaint.?
@@russel2352 I have NO idea!
@@lynetterudman Well I found their email address and sent them a mail requesting the reason and some other comments. Don't expect a reply though, they may just think I am a Neanderthal. But whatever, do some more videos , your video was good.
Ons het ‘n paar Gewone Tarentale as troeteldiere, glo vir my, hulle raas definitief meer as ‘n Hadeda 😂
Ja, hulle kan ook baie raas!
What about Vleikuiken that sounds like a foghorn?
I'll need to add it to the part 2 of the series.
Hi there. Any idea why the Cape Turtle Dove name is no longer what we call that bird?
It had a recent name change unfortunately by the International Ornithological Committee. They periodically change some names.
@@lynetterudmanLike the iconic names of our towns ... which thankfully are largely unofficially ignored!
What's the sound of the bird of cuckoos's background?
I can only hear a Southern Grey-headed Sparrow in the background of that particular sound clip and unfortunately some banging from a noisy neighbour. I videoed that Red-chested Cuckoo call in my surburban garden a few years ago.
Only now relaised the Bokmakierie is saying his own name. I will remember it going forward...
Yes, that is where he got his name from. I have a video on my channel of birds that are singing their own names. Will find it for you.
th-cam.com/video/S3A7WpIBaCg/w-d-xo.html
@@lynetterudman thanks I’d love that, helps learn the calls of more birds. Also some of the easy to remember calls like Pretty Georgie, Victor, three blind mice of you have a video
Also Piet-my-vrou.
@@SouthAfricanWanderer I have heaps of videos with bird calls on my TH-cam channel. Just do searches of birds and you will find them. I have over 2 000 videos with calls! I usually mention what the call sounds like in each call video, so that it makes it easier to remember.
Is there an app which will listen to and identify bird calls?
Not yet. There is someone that is working on such an app but I guess it is going to take some time.
Yes. The Ebird app from Cornell University.
@@nosherwansethna It's not always very accurate though.
...
Part 2 in this series coming up soon.
No ways a barbet is iconic
That nasal call is definitely iconic in the Karoo. One of my favourite calls in the Karoo bush. So loud and so nasal.
Sounds of home, though I think my little coastal village is now becoming more of a town 😕 must visit soon
Which town is that?
