  • Reality is an important aspect of Angel's Egg, Oshii utilises visuals and narrative to manipulate reality. Very interesting. Peace.

Do not forget the waterbottles, her attemt to make the old life work, her, day by day doing her little work that gives her satisfaction, meaning ... the meaningless work WE ALL do, the emotional stability the egg gives, denial of the end of the world as what it was.

I think the movie is about accepting the reality of death. At the end of the film when the man destroys the egg, there's nothing inside, but the girl wakes up and screams (chillingly) when she finds what has happened. She rushes to a cliffside, and those giant stalks have slightly changed to look more like bird babies than they once were and then she jumps off a cliff into the great vast ocean, and when she makes impact she herself turns into a lot of eggs from the breaths she lets out while drowning. Losing the egg makes her lose her sense to live, and her killing herself leads to the birth of a lot more eggs at her assimilation. Writing that out, it almost more makes it seem like Girl is more what's preventing reality from changing, the girl wants things to stay the same and the guy wants things to move forward. By destroying the egg nothing actually happens, it just sets the girl in motion and destroys her (but gives birth to many more eggs). But by doing this, time finally unfreezes and the ocean floods out the land we've known, and then it pulls out and it's revealed the whole 'land' the film took place on was a collapsed Noah's Ark that turned over in the sea. How one might interpret it is that everything on Earth died, in the story of Noah's Ark it is a vessel that literally carries all life on it for a future of a world wiped clean. The movie is set in a dead world, 'Noah's Ark' has collapsed and thus all life as we know it is dead. There's a repetitive cycle as time is frozen and the whole movie takes place on the collapsed hull of the Arc, which is the only piece of land, but the bird and everything is frozen and fossilized. It almost seems like the girl clutches onto the idea that life goes on, even if everything dies there's a hope for the future, they can make this work. Meanwhile the guy embraces the inevitable death, and wants to stop being stuck still in this moment. At the end when the world floods and the ocean begins to fully submerge the land, he stands on the shore and lets the water rush over him as it slowly rises.
I think the meaning here could be about reality as you said, but also about life death, denial, and acceptance. The guy embraces the demise of the world as where it's at isn't even really living, it all might not even really be real. I think the arc collapsed and life as they know it is dead, but the guy wants to embrace that there's no hope and accept the reality of the situation. That's why the egg is empty, it's hope that's revealed to be empty and when the girl faces there's no hope, she kills herself and reality finally begins to move forward. However, when she does kill herself and lets things take there course there's many more eggs that spring out of her. In accepting this and the failure of letting Noah's Ark sink, there's life that springs from death. Not the life either of them knew, but she gives birth to new eggs, new hope, and we see the bird awakens at her death. I think this might mean that despite the otherwise grim interpretation of the events, there's still hope, and the previous 'generation' shouldn't hold back the growth of the new generation. The Girl clinged to the old world and tried to make it work, but there was no hope in it, just an empty hollow holding onto the past. By accepting the change, accepting death, and accepting the end, there is a new hope allowed to prosper.
Just some feelings I have towards it.

Mamoru Oshii said he didn't know what the film was about, so finding your own meaning is the best idea. Saying THIS, is what the meaning is, defeats that. It's been a long time since I watched it, but I did get a different meaning out it. Some people didn't see any meaning in it, apart from an art film, and that well may be what Oshii got from it.
Since Oshiis films are usually are very on the nose, when it comes to themes and meanings, it is nice that this one is more loose, and I don't think that should be replaced with a this is the right answer.

When an artist says that, what they mean is they want other people to have their own meaning, Oshii obviously has his own meaning of the film which he doesn't want to share, because if he says it other people will copy his interpretation instead of finding their own meaning. This video is doing exactly what oshii wants, this video is someone giving his own meaning for the film. You don't have to believe his meaning as fact, if you have your own interpretation then that's fine as well (you can try sharing it here). This is how art works in general, not just Angel's Egg.

@@billy1998vn Saying he doesn't know what the meaning is does not mean he is saying his work has no meaning, like chickenflavor suggested. It is entirely possible for an artist to explicitly pour a lot of himself into an artwork, and end up not knowing what it all means when combined.
The finished product has transcended any singular and personal meaning into something coherent and significant, but overarchingly alien even to its creator. To say he "knew exactly what it was about" is dismissive of the artistic process as exploration, instead of careful thought-out intentionality.
Oshii might know a lot more about the work as everyone else, but his interpretation remains just that, by his own admittance.

Eggs have pretty simple symbolism in most cultures. Easter for Christianity and the like is supposed to be the day that Christ is reborn from the dead. seeing as how the story of Noah from the bible is mentioned the director was probably aware of its meanings, which seem to amount to the same thing in many cultures: immortality resurrection etc. In philosophy I think eggs are used to describe ideas. Thoughts or ideas that gestate then hatch. In religion the central idea is that there will be a rebirth in the context of a world which does seem to be on the brink of collapse. Perhaps the cracking of that egg is the revaluation that there is no rebirth. Also, the fact that the angel is a child says something I think, especially considering some of the strange imagery at the end of the film that might suggest that the egg was something that kept her in her a child while the world grew up and died around her (we see no other children in the film after all). The girl also doesn't seem to be literally an angel in representation, so the fact she is referred to as such is interesting. Angels are symbols of purity and her childlike appearance also plays into that symbolism. However in the context of some of the things I have just mentioned we could be lead to the implication that her purity is hollow and empty. This could relate to another aspect of the girls character in how she obsessively fills sphere shaped glass flasks to drink from. She want's the egg to have something inside it, and she wants something to be inside herself greater than the shell of her body. in any case she like the egg seem to represent empty things form the past, something that is also implied by the place that the girl lives which looks like a church but because it contains many animal skeletons could be looked at as a natural history museum. Anyway there is so much that could be said about the film, ts a true surrealist masterpiece. And, its just one of those works that really earns the right to be called "deep". I love what Mamoru Oshii can do! if there is any criticism though, it just that it is a shame he has to be so serious and dark about everything. I believe the brooding can create a great mood but there is nothing mature about confusing darkness and sadness with complexity and authenticity. And, while I feel like Oshii does find complexity and authenticity, he does lean too much towards this strange kind of sadness. For angels egg its perfect but in other works of his I think he sometimes lacks the versatility to settle on other moods than his usual philosophical or existential melancholy.

What other sort of mood would this story work in? I can't imagine it having near the same impact if it took place in unicorn rainbow happy fun-fun land. I don't really find the setting to be all that dark or sad, especially considering by the end we still really have no idea about what's going on in that place (or what the place really is). You mentioned the word "melancholy" in your last sentence, and that's how I would describe the mood of the entire piece. Looking up the definition of melancholy I prefer to term it a little differently. To me, it's more of an unchanging absence of emotion, rather than some sort of drawn-out sadness. It's stale, much like the setting of this movie. It seems to be somewhat cyclical, with the egg and rising waters, but it's also starkly unchanging, and devoid of any emotion whatsoever.

    • @Lonelymonkeybat
      @Lonelymonkeybat 7 ปีที่แล้ว

I said that the mood that Oshii holds is perfect for Angels egg. I would still call it sad, but don't take my choice of words at face value. maybe the choice of word is poor but there are many types of sadness and when I use that word to refer to the films mood it is a particular kind of sadness. Melancholy is probably a better way to describe it, because it is a contemplative thoughtful kind of sadness, maybe an existential depression is a better way of describing it. That said though the hole film is not on the hole positive. there is maybe one moment in the film that implies something hopeful or joyful. most of the film is permeated with sound imagery and narrative that is purposefully meant to be unsettling most of the time and somber the rest. Somber is also a good way of describing the mood. The theme that plays for the angel in particular, which is played on a single piano, implies some loneliness and maybe other emotions but never those that inspire joy or happiness. so you see I have complex feelings about the mood, and the mood is of course not static but its not positive. At times I would call the film cynical, especially where it portrays the state of the world as a product of war and war as something biological. I think Oshii has an opinion on war that comes through in the kinds of images he uses and the kind of realism that you can see in his other works. however those other works and angels egg contains other emotions on the subject and I believe cynicism might be a little too specific to describe everything in the work. So I guess I agree with you sort of on the mood. keep in mind that I can have this opinion and also keep that one that sees Oshii as limited in the kind of tone his films express, because on the hole Oshii films in general are not happy, and in that there is sometimes a lack of humanity not always but its something that comes with the tone of his works. Oshii can portray a kind of realism and that realism is something I like, but its also lacking by nature. In Ghost in the shell characters rarely smile if at all, Is that a real depiction of life or a situation or is that something of tine uniquely and particularly oshii? In that this is something Oshii he has excluded something human and just as real. And this exclusion of an aspect of humanity can come of as haughty or conceited, like a philosopher who by think in and resolving the world totally in ideas is disconnected from reality. he more than makes up for this though by being an amazing artist so I let is slide but that is my criticism and it is a genuine one.

    • @IRObot2113
      @IRObot2113 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I wasn't trying to claim your criticism was wrong, I was just wondering what other style of setting would have the same impact if all other aspects of the movie were the same. I see what you mean by the work not having much humanity attached to it, and I like your comparison of the film being like a philosopher who only considers ideas, and not the objective reality around him. Coming back to the discussion after a night of sleep has made me realize that that every individual pulls out different imagery and meanings from the story, which goes to show how thought-provoking it is, and at the end of the day, that it's just plain good art.

    • @Lonelymonkeybat
      @Lonelymonkeybat 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Sorry, thanks, and I agree! That is the power of surrealism. Its weirdly able to create something both highly rendered in concept as well as applicable to peoples individual experience in a way that only something very abstract might be. If only there was more plane good art like this.

I just finished watching it and all I could say was "Woah... What did I just watch?"
I really thought that this was some art project or something. The ending made me feel really small.
To me, the egg symbolizes hope, at least for the girl it's hope. She clings on to it like how a mother holds and protects a child. She talks as if she's one day going to watch it grow and fly. The man, on the other hand, was afraid of what he didn't know, the egg. He had vague memories of what happened in his past but couldn't quite grasp what they meant, thus dreading the possibilities that the egg might be a threat to both of them because it might be the reincarnation of a monster.
I'm not so sure but I would really love to rewatch this with someone and hear their interpretation. I'm not good at analyzing things but I really like doing it and hearing what others might have to say about things I find an interest in. All the comments are wonderful and I agree with the person who said that it would be wrong to say that this video will tell us the truth about it because this film is really up for interpretation.

i loved this movie so much. reminded me a lot of devilman crybaby and rachel gardner. the tragic realizations of how the past must die for the future to exist. how holding onto a hopeless world will do nothing. moving on is the only chance to keep reality’s existence. holding onto false hope can be comforting, but often times this hope is empty. it is only a distraction, something to give you reason. this “false hope” symbolism has a huge religious aspect to it in this film.
i guess that’s kind of my short interpretation of it :)

I been reading a bit of Carl Jung lately, and I thinks some of his ideas about the subconscious archetypes of dreams definitely play into this film. The director had a crisis of faith at the time he made this film. I also read thar he stated that even he doesn't know what the film is about.

I thought it was about reflections in general. Self reflecting, reflecting upon the world and reality. We don't know if our past is even real, where we really are going in the future, we just have the present day. It has a slight theme of Nihilism in my opinion. Water reflections, shadows, lost causes. I feel like you take from it what you choose to perceive based upon your own experience of life.

I watched this film without sound and I wanted to look at color, faces, and atmosphere. A lot of that really not only inspired me to write a song I like, but also stuck with me. Seeing religious symbolism, emptiness, and something beyond against the dystopian landscape. The contrast in this film is amazing.

I interpreted that the little girl was the immature and innocent kind of person, who doesn’t know what the actions with the egg ( reality) could impact ( end if the world/apocalypse).
The man is mature and has a lot of knowledge to what is happening. He is trying to protect the girl from being destroyed by the truth of reality and gets rid of it for her. The girl got sad because she wanted to protect what she thought was special and beautiful. The man basically protected the girl from the true reality ( what happened to the world and what caused the apocalypse) could this be a reference for the future ? If you think about it,yes it could be. But that’s a different topic

    What I got from it.
Is that the girl was holding into an illusion that prevents her from joining the people on that ark thing.
Basically as if the guy is acting like Noah and saving the people who he thinks deserve to be saved.
While the rest are going to drawn by the end of the film.
That's what I took from it.
In fact I got an opposite meaning to yours as I see modern science as the blind stone people who think they are doing something useful.

Well its a small detail i noticed. Maybe not that important. But the thing that guy was holding looked kinda like a sword you'd expect a hero to carry. But the sword itself is rather strange looking. He uses that to crack the egg, so, perhaps as a hero of this story, he had to crack it but what makes me confused is why did he return the egg to the girl when he had to crack it anyway. Maybe he isn't so sure about doing it at first and waits to see why it is so precious to her or what she does with it. So after staying with her, it could be this faint sense of certainty that he is doing the right thing so he cracks it. His actions could be seen in a gruesome or righteous way or just mysterious in general depending on how you see his sword like thing.

Hey AnimeEveryday! I am a huge fan of your work. I especially find your ghost in the shell analysis extremely informative, analytical, and relaxing. Your channel is among some of my biggest inspirations for making my own videos. I really want to analyze the music videos for my favorite Japanese music group: Suiyobi no Campanella, but after doing a lot of research on the subject of fair use and copyright I am still confused.... Especially as this is not American content and music. I looked online and found that the music from the music group "Wednesday Campanella" says under Music Policies: Playback - Viewable Worldwide and Advertising - Ads may appear. Does this mean I can monetize the video? And as I am trying to analyze the imagery am I allowed to have clips from the music video play in my video? Am I allowed to use images found on the internet of the Music group in my video with no consequence? Or will i have to thoroughly cite all my sources in the description? How do you deal with copyright in your own videos? Sorry for the long question, big fan! keep up the good work!!!

Great video, I love this film.
Right before the shadow-fish hunting scene, the little girl is seen looking at a very colourful stained-glass window that represents a fish (if I recall correctly). Here's what I got from this scene.
Obviously, the fish is an ancient symbol for Christianity. When she looks at the window, she sees her own reflection next to the colourful image of the fish. It might show that spirituality is merely a glorified, idealised reflection of our own minds. As she looks past religion (the fish), that's what she's left with. It also prevents her from seeing the world as it is. It's only when she starts looking through the window that she can see it.
Also, notice the rows of chairs. It looks more like a theatre than a church. And the many broken windows might have something to do with breaking free from the religious lense and the decline of organised religion.
Furthermore, the hunters might show that, while spirituality is a component of the human mind, it is futile to look for it in the real world. They are not going after reflections of themselves, but shadows of external religious dogmas.
I think this interpretation would be consistent with the fact that Oshii left Christianity before making this film.
There are many related pieces of symbolism in the film, like the fact that the Christ-like character is first seen riding this column of biomechanical looking vehicles: that would be organised religion as something both profoundly organic and manufactured. Or the fact that when he breaks the egg (that might represent faith, as in hope or "conviction of things unseen" Hebrews 11:1), it ends up being empty, which causes extreme distress to the little girl. I've never been religious, but I imagine it would be a very traumatic experience to lose faith after carrying it around like that all your life.

My initial interpretation focused more on the loss of innocence for the girl. You didn't touch upon that, but I don't think it's too different from your take. Religion is a fascinating take on reality. Innocence is another take on reality, one that has an inevitable wake up call, like the piercing of the egg in the film. It's a very esoteric film where I believe the egg itself becomes a projection of the individual viewer, creating a unique experience, or reality, that differs from person to person. And that's a very, very meta concept on reality that this film carries.
But even after all that, I still can't bring myself to appreciate this film as much as I'd like to because of that vagueness. Still, I must say that it is an undeniably thought-provoking artpiece.

very nice reviews. This film has the magnitude of the existencialist topics in GITS (1995), mixed with the animation aesthetics and overall feeling. This is something I'm always looking for in anime's, but it seems as it is so difficult to find... Does anyone know of other anime works which have similar attributes?

Try Texhnolyze (22 eps). It's very experimental/avant-garde, atmospheric, and surreal. An existential dark cyberpunk using subtlty and visual story-telling. I hail it as the pinnacle of anime (along with Angel's Egg), those final episodes were the best I've seen in the medium. Another good one is Serial Experiments Lain (13 eps).

Why the Soldier skin turns dark at the very beginning of the movie?? What is this suppose to represent?
    ....
    ....
    ....
    ....
It kinda reminds me of Shirou and Archer relationship from Fate. One being pure idealistic, but his skin turned darker when he lost hid ideas as Archer.
Similiarities don't end there as the Girl is very similiar to Illya. Both were children with white hair and white skin. Also Illya story living alone in dark castle, brainwashed to be sacrificial lamb, feels kinda close to the Girl story.

this movie makes me sad that Oshii will probably never touch an anime ever again.

What why do we think that? I mean sure its been eight years since his last anime film but I'm sure if he gets an idea he wont object to working in the medium again.

Thanatos388 hes been vocal about how the state of anime right now is not an environment he wants to get into again, the people who are working on the industry are not people he wants to be associated with, says they are lazy.

Hatt Hanz Oh really? I had heard that he wasn't interested in modern anime shows and movies but what director from the 80s doesn't say the same thing right? But if he's going so far to insult the people working in the industry then maybe he wont be making more anime.

reading it again, "lazy" is a strong word. Its more like the priorities of the industry have shifted from what Oshii is comfortable with.

"One of religion's most important jobs is to distort reality" On the contrary. Religion serves as a way to reason with the unreasonable and explain the unexplainable. I'd argue that religion's most important job is in fact to pierce the veil of mystery. Just unlike science it merely does it within a seemingly limited scope - through rituals and creation of layers of understanding

Oh well, didn't see this movie like this but it makes sense. It's been some time since I've last seen it but to me it seemed that this was set in a "post-Deluge" city, where everyone has probably died and the city is still haunted by those people and where only the little girl and the egg lived, I thought that the girl was probably a descendant of Noah and the egg an egg of dove. The young mans was probably another descendant of Noah and his ship some kind of Ark, I don't remember too much of what follows but that was what I understood of the movie (I should really re-watch this).
