Just picked up two of those ratchets the other day one in 3/8 and the other in 1/4. I did that job on my old 420 a few years ago to check the valves

The earlier-style crankcase breather certainly leaves a lot to be desired. Both of my P218's leak from that spot. They are supposed to have a clamp holding them in place, but the clamp always seems to be missing. The muffler mount also leaves a lot to be desired. Not sure how many Kohler KT or Magnum engines you've worked on, but the manifold routing on those engines is a much better design.

What ended up being the problem? Is there a part 3 video?

The Onan is a dated industrial engine. The setup in a 318 is a bit odd but not bad. Onan sells a de-carbon gasket kit. I suggest doing that, and along the way check your valve lash, intake gaskets, points if its a B43g. A lot has been checked by the time you're done with the de-carboning process:) Airflow and blowing out a Onan is important. The lower screen and foam firewall must be there. For the Kohler lover: The 318 was built to replace the 317 as there was an issue with the Kohler 17HP Series 1. There was also an Onan update kit built to Replace the 17HP Kohler with an Onan. I have worked on them. My P218 has about 200 hrs since overhaul, it has given me no problems yet.

There's also an outer oil filter seal to help keep crap from plugging up the cooling fins.

Can you Do a video on Adjusting a 318 Hydrostatic Creep Issue, I have a 1985 318 and I'm having troubles...like your channel, dont worry about what your doing, its very informative and i appreciate it.

I was able to leave the muffler in place, on my 1988 318, when I did a flyball spacer repair. It was a newly acquired tractor, and I had never worked on a 318 before. So out of ignorance, and not wanting to dismantle anything more, than I needed to, I kinda just forced the muffler out some. What kind of PTO clutch is on your 318? Is it off of a 420? Looking forward to the next installment!

When checking for an intake leak, the propane torch should be unlit. If you don't have a torch, almost any flammable aerosol (brake cleaner, carb cleaner, WD40, hairspray etc.) will also work.

I know this video was made in 2020, but is there a part 3 or did this 318 get repowered or what?

The 318 has been sitting in the back of the shop since shortly after this video.... patiently waiting for me to get back to it. I do know that the valve lash is incorrect and adjusting the valves should fix the issue.

@@mmrbeef Had me wondering there...was intently watching and then spent (wasted) hours looking for part 3. No rush though, I have a couple of machines like that one myself...just sitting on hold. I ran out of round tuits too. Thanks for the quick reply though.

Yeah, you could call that project a pandemic related delay. Shortly after I made part 2, I ordered some gaskets etc and while waiting on those, life got busy. I pushed the 318 into the corner out of the way, parts arrived about 3 weeks later and at that point I think work was super busy and it started collecting dust. Two plus years later it hasn't moved, I've gone through countless other projects and even 318's and that one just sits there. Not even a good reason to be sitting there and not fixed.

@@mmrbeef "Life" happens, right? Don't sweat it, I was just wondering if I missed the fix. I'm going through one right now and waiting on parts. Hopefully, I'll figure out how to make it foot pedal drive with brakes on the left for more precise control...I hate the hydrostatic lever under the steering wheel. Plan on using this one with a homebuilt front end loader that's just a bunch of parts right now. Gonna be fun if I ever get it finished.

This is why im a huge fan of Kohler Magnum series engines , much more durable ( just my opinion) and alot less design flaws and practically bullet proof , like the one i have in my 317..

The Kohlers are great engines but from my experience I like the onans more because they seem to have more torque and the sound of a onan just can't be beat

    Where is part 3?

I would need to go check, there is a chance the video either never got edited, it’s unlisted, or perhaps never got made.

I bought a 318 and took the carb off. No prior experience or even a TH-cam search before I did it, believe it or not you CAN… take the intake off without taking the exhaust off, but my god would I not recommend it
