The 2014 OUTSIDER ART FAIR New York

  • "I hate art fairs," said a major art critic (who shall remain anonymous) that James Kalm spoke with two days ago Your reporter said "But you can't hate the OUTSIDER art fair". He said "I hate the term OUTSIDER". Your correspondent replied, "But it's nice that crippled kids get a chance to show their work". He said "They should take the crayons away from the crippled kids". This conversation seems to typify the kinds of misunderstandings that still surround the notion and criteria of "Outsider Art". This program brings viewers glimpses of only a short list of eye-catching works presented at this year's fair including: Alcides Perira dos Santos, Julian Martin, Judu Patua, Eddie Arning, Tony Cox, Grandma Moses and others. A musical introduction is provided by Buck-and-a-Quarter Quartet and was recorded live in Washington Square Park

This is the most enjoyable 21 mins. & 21 secs. I have spent in ages. Such a treat to see absolute freedom of expression, and awareness by so many people. I have been trying to find outsider art since moving to Minneapolis, not much success so far. I don't need the holy grail, just my true love, outsider art, and those who create it.

Hey Cloudhiden, I've bee a fan of "outsider art" since the 1970s, so any chance I have to spread the word is an opportunity to convert folks to the joy and surprise of the "outside"...(and I get to Vermont every chance I get.)

Outsider art comes from the soul, its not for people looking for something safe. It has a story to tell which provokes some thinking.

Every time I show people my art it leads to decussion of trying to make money off of it immediately. A lot of people would wonder why you would even make art if you're not trying to make money..

Thank you for your video. One minor comment:
12:00 - Avant-garde is not a specific art movement or style. It is simply French for cutting-edge, the latest and most advanced. Most of the styles we know were in their day considered avant-garde; with time they become the mainstream and other movements take their place. Outsider art ignores even the notion of avant-garde since it operates outside the established art world. Generally outsider artists do not know about art history or art trends so the idea of "latest" or "cutting edge" is meaningless to them.
The reverse is not necessarily true, since mainstream artists who want to create something radically new often look into sources like outsider art for inspiration.

Thanks for a great tour of Outsider art fair ,I missed it for the first time ever and you helped alleviate that in a very articulated and critic info. Like Dore Ashton said we are first reporters then... "critics"! Great art-history vid-clip, Grandma Mothes, Bill Taylor, etc keep up the beat! RO

Outsider Art has completely become an obsession, wish I had known about it years ago! My goal is to have a collection of at least three works by each artist. Most of it these days is becoming more expensive as the market for it increases which doesn't seem right. But Oh well, good I suppose

"Outsider" nothing. These works are stunning--technically sophisticated and very soulful. Qualities that are sorely missing from all art in general these days.
