Kojo no Tsuki (The Moon over the Ruined Castle)

- 'Kōjō no Tsuki' (荒城の月) is one of the most famous Japanese songs ever made. Rentarō Taki composed it in 1901. The lyrics were written by Bansui Doi, who came from Sendai, the largest city in the Tōhoku Region. The lyric of the song was inspired by the ruins of Aoba Castle and Aizuwakamatsu Castle, in Fukushima Prefecture.
This video is dedicated in memory of David Wong (1954-2011). He was my TH-cam friend who suddenly died two years ago. I called him 'Chinese samurai', and that made him smile. He said me, "It kind of make me laugh, that I had been called "samurai"; I am not Japanese, but I always respect the codes they follow, I have to say I just try to be good, far from respectable! Haha."
David, we will never forget you. Sleep well, buddy. For me, you are a role model as a man: to live for something, to die for something!
Sincerely,
Teisuka

The lyrics in Japanese and English:
荒城の月
Kōjō no Tsuki
(The Moon over the Ruined Castle)
Haru kouro no hana no en
(In a spring evening a feast of blossoms was held on the tower,)
Meguru sakazuki kagesashite
(and cups of wine were passed around.)
Chiyo no matsu ga e wakeideshi
(Then up from the old pine the Moon rose.)
Mukashi no hikari Ima izuko
(But now, where is the brightness of bygone days?)
Aki jinei no shimo no iro
(It was a frosty night of autumn. Up above the camp)
Nakiyuku kari no kazu misete
(many a wild goose passed, calling.)
Uuru tsurugi ni terisoishi
(And the Moon shone on the unsheathed swords.)
Mukashi no hikari ima izuko
(But now, where is the brightness of bygone days?)
Tenjokage wa kawaranedo
(The shadow of the sky doesn't change, but)
Eiko wa utsuru yo no sugata
(the Moon is reflecting it as before,)
Utsusan toteka ima mo nao
(changing for better to worse?)
Aa Kojo no yowa no tsuki
(Ah, the Moon over the ruined castle!)

So this is the song Kuzunoha mean
It is interesting that this song is in Cyberpunk 2077, I've not played the game yet but I've been familiar with this song for around 40 years from the Scorpions live album "Tokyo Tapes," it is one of the highlights of that album and as I had just listened to that performance on youtube I decided to listen to a traditional version. Quite beautiful, thank you for posting it. I did not know how famous it was but I figured it had to be well known because the Scorpions had never performed it before (they learned it while in Japan) but the crowd knew the lyrics and sang one of the verses.
A reference was also made in the new trailer for season 2 of Tsukimichi: Moonlit Fantasy (anime)
Someone forgot to read the comment properly before responding.
I can't believe this was put on here 10yrs back an a ANIME made alot of fans look for this song to make the views go up
tsukimichi randomly summoning views
Makoto Musume, poems of the heart.
If my memory is correct, you uploaded this song from your former channel after the great earthquake in 2011, didn't you? This is not an enka, but it is also very traditional song, Almost everybody in Japan is familiar with it. You are promoting our culture to the world. Thank you very much.
Paul Goemon
Are there traditional songs like this?
@@yfmbeat Yes. We used to learn this kind of songs at school about 50 years ago. Unfortunately, I'm not in that generation. Paul Goemon
Every respectful rock/metal group played this song at their concerts. It's a sign :) I basically wanted to watch the Scorpions Tokyo concert but found this (more original version). Sounds good
Thank you, Hanako.
This was in toilet bound hanako-kun?
Hanako Sama is a fixer in the year 2077
I know the title of this song from the manga, so I played this song now and it turned out to be good

"Kojo no Tsuki" : extraordinaire chanson de Rentarô Taki, composée en 1901, et reprise par Monk (sur des images de Kurosawa).
The description is beautiful. It amazes me that this was uploaded 11 years ago, how long things last on the internet. I hope you are doing well, to David Wong indeed, may he rest in peace.
This is a lovely video; it's a good match of song and movie. I remember watching Throne of Blood when we studied MacBeth in high school English...
I can see why Kuzunoha likes this song so much. It's very beautiful!
“It’s simple really, I won’t kill you today but STOP calling yourselves The Moon Over the Ruined Castle”…
- Tsukimichi -
WE came here from the same thing
I think I learned this as a child for a music lesson. I haven’t heard it in like 20 years. I was looking for it because I heard this tune in a movie that sounded strangely familiar. Thank you for uploading this.
Thank you! It was autocorrect. LOL. I do like Japanese warriors!
Have a good weekend! :)

Beautiful Song. Greetings from Germany 🇩🇪
Tsukimitchi- moonlit fantasy brought me here
I guess it's the most beautiful melody I've ever heard...
I hope my internet friends will remember me as fondly as you do yours
Your dedication to your friend is amazing, I hope that David rests well in a better place. 🙏 I also must say that you couldn't have chosen a better film to pair with this beautiful song. I have had the pleasure of consuming some of Kurosawa's greats recently and I am still mesmerized by Throne of Blood to this day. Thank you!
Ignace Renucci,
_Hikari_ (meaning "brightness") is also the name of a semi-fast Shinkansen service connecting the cities of Tokyo, Osaka and/or Fukuoka.
It is quite a sad & sorrowful song with ancient Japanese worriors in a desolate mood on a procession which is to recollect our passed-friend "DAVID WONG" !!
TEISUKA, YOU ARE A WELL THINKING PEOPLE, THANK YOU. I SALUTE TO YOU !!!! (Winston)
Everyone else talking about anime while im here from cyberpunk 2077. Its used amazingly in that game.
One may also want to take note of Thelonious Monk's traduction Inherently interesting in my opinion

Hi Teisuka,
Thank you for uploading this beautiful song, and this is your new upload, so our old dedicated Teisuka is back! Not lazy anymore? Ha ha...and once again, you did a great job to pay tribute to David Wong. As always, your video editing is excellent, making it match the song so well. It goes directly to my playlist. Cheers and thanks again!

Very Very Very Beautuful Song....Love This...👍👍👍🙏🙏🙏💋💋💋⚘⚘⚘
I can't believe IDOLM@STER will cover this song. The song is already hauntingly beautiful as it is, looking forward to the IMAS cover.
I'm here because of that level 1 adventurer who mainly a merchant
Beautiful... :*-)
Akira+Tosiro best ever.
I don't know Japanese, but I think this performance is missing the third verse:
今荒城の 夜半(よわ)の月
変わらぬ光 誰(た)がためぞ
垣に残るは ただ葛(かずら)
松に歌う(うとう)は ただ嵐
+Oahu Hawaii Hi Oahu, the third stanza is rarely Sung. Some singers like Taiki Shima, sing only the first and the last stanzas
Oahu Hawaii what does it means. the missing verse.
@ Abdul Wahid
It means:
Now at midnight the moon is above us
For whom does it shine like it once did?
Nothing remains on the crumbled walls of the castle but ivy
There's nothing to hear but the storm in the twigs of the pinetrees
It was indeed missing
Nicely coupled with Kurosawa.
Nice to see I’m not the only who came here thanks to Tsukimichi: Moonlit Fantasy anime
Thought I'd be the only one that came because of Tsukimichi. Turns out everyone is
It is very good of you to dedicate this hauntingly beautiful video to your friend brother Teisuka, but then again this is your way.......bless you and your friends memory :).....Glenn
