Low pay, crappy conditions, treated like you are Shi*. In fact you can work in a warehouse/ supermarket for the same money without all the fuss of all the problems that you have to encounter on the road. And to top it off you know that you are going to be home every night.
I have the utmost respect for truck drivers. I drove for three years back in the early '90's and that was the worst time in my life! I've never been treated so poorly by people, dispatcher, shippers, receivers, you name it. I love trucks and driving but hell no, a lot of things need to change.
Before I retired, I worked in a factory that made HDPE pipe. We had to have a large yard to stage all that pipe in because of the lack of drivers. Our Shipping Supertencant spent the majority of his day on the phone calling different trucking firms to see if they had anyone that could haul a load for us. So maybe the shortage is in certain aspects of the industry? Because before I worked for the pipe plant, I worked in corn wet milling and there never seemed to be a shortage of tankers.
Kurt, I believe everything you talked about is so true, I know a lot of guys say they really want to drive truck . I just look at them and ask why, they say for all the wrong reasons , to be honest, I enjoyed most of the 46 years OTR but now am enjoying my Retirement just watching men like you trucking , keep up the great video work . Yup from 19 years old to 62 did 42 years driving. From a pick up, straight truck to semi with time off for "repairs" to body and life's up and downs. Tough life not everyone can do it! At 67 working P/T stocking product at a Menards fun!
Wouldn't bankrupt the trucking company if all companies were required to pay. Rates would go up. People don't suddenly stop needing freight because drivers make more money. Also, if pay were required for sitting hours at a dock, suddenly efficiencies would be created and you would no longer need to sit hours at a dock. Scheduling would become more efficient. You are sitting a dock because you are not an expense. The minute you charge for your time, it becomes in the financial best interests of the company to minimize your wait time. Until that happens, and you sit for free, what is their incentive to avoid you waiting? There is none.
I’m 70 years old. I drove for 2,000,000. Miles I drove 18 years . I miss it every day….but I just don’t think I could do it any more. I wish I could. Also it isn’t like it was when I drove 10-15 yrs ago.. I do love watching your videos. Thank you

30 years (100% OTR) all trailers except curtainside, car hauler, and some specialized. Did the super- heavy, oversize/over length, gov't and military, refrigerated, dry, bulk, tanker, etc. You told it like it is, brother. We all thank you for that. Two things: 1. Don't expect to be "super trucker" in only a week. Takes years to be "average". Respect those with more experience than you. 2. If the four-wheeler you drove to your company's terminal is manual stick shift, when you finish your long haul big truck runs

Great video. I was a former truck driver until i had heart issues back in 2016 and had to give it up. Company dispatchers can be the pits. My wife and i droves as husband and wife team and had a lot of issues with our dispatcher. Needless to say we didn't last long with that company. Everything you spoke is the truth. Trucking is a lifestyle not a job. I remember when I was in school with C.R. England. I met a guy who was one of those born to be a trucker because his daddy, and granddaddy was a trucker. His words lol. Well one week after going out with the trainer, I ran into him at the terminal. He said he was going home he can't do this. I did eight years otr, regional, and local in Chicago. Been off the road for the past ten years, and looking forward to get out there again in the next couple years. Stay safe Kurt.
I’ve had my CDL for quite a while but wasn’t using it. A friend is an O/O for a local company which hauls hazmat. In CDL school the classroom teacher was an old fellow who had been a Teamster before leaving to start the school. He advised us to get all endorsements we could. After finishing school I jumped through the hoops to get my Hazmat endorsement. This put me in a position where the company where I drive part time needed a spare driver. It’s been a good gig for several reasons. First, I get paid percentage. I really don’t get hurt as bad as a mileage based driver from delays. The second good point is that the other drivers which I deal with are generally high class. When loading up at the port the other drivers are nice guys. You just don’t see the things like you see on Bonehead Truckers Channel.

Hi i like what you have to say about trucking . The truth never hurt anyone. My neighbor owned his own truck. I got to go on a day trip with him when I was very young. That started my love of trucks. Trucking gave me so much and it also cost me heaps. Two marriages not seeing my child take her frist steps. Frist day at school. It toke me a long time to really understand trucking and what you give up to be a truck driver. I am thankful to all truck drivers around the world who keep as feed clothed and in making sure we have a life. Back when I was 21 I wanted to be a truck driver. But, 2 accidents and a speeding ticket within a 3 month period killed that dream. My cousin Bill was a truck driver. Gas tanker all over the UP. crazy driving skills. Rain, snow, sleet he handled it all. Home everyday and a beautiful KW. Big family man. Awesome dad. I was so proud of him and jealous. He was home every night for his family. He passed from cancer two years ago. If my desk job comes to an end, ie company owner retiring, maybe then. My wife is not too crazy about it. Maybe still a dream. Who knows. I do respect you soo much for what you do. Have a great week and please stay safe.

Hi Kurt! Great video👍 The reason why I stopped driving (🇸🇪) after 7yers was my bad back. I loaded/ unloaded my self, parcel loads (different stops with everything that fits in a box 60t rig). It’s a god job but it can be tyersum for your body. Br.

The only time I've gotten paid for staying in my company truck was during the flood recovery working for b n s f and union pacific hauling rock repairing the railroad right of away hauling from different locations from Kansas City Missouri as far north as Sioux falls south Dakota.
Well, I was with a company up here in Canada that payed me $28/hour and .47 cents a mile. You are right you get nothing when your truck isn't moving, but when I'm moving the trailer empty, I get payed by the hour and when it is Loaded It's By the mile. When I'm not moving and parked for the night "NOPE" nothing, oh well. Love the video, keep them coming Kurt and be safe out there.
Truck driving takes a special breed of man. Truck driver for 24 years. Would still love to drive at age 69 but diabetes want let me get my license back. Never gets out of your blood. My dad drove back in the sixties for .05 cents per mile.

Hello kurt I've been watching your videos with your dog Opie for a while, he's a beautiful dog. For 17 years I drove an 18-meter bus in the city of Oldenburg in Germany, followed by refrigerated trucks for a few years. I envy you as a truck driver, with your beautiful trucks, just Wooow. I'm currently trying to get into this trucking world. Yesterday I failed my permit test again, waiting to retake it. But he's right, for me though I going in it for the experience. And of course the paycheck, but mostly a different lifestyle. Great video Shmidt.
Hang in there brother when I first got mine took me four road tests pretty much due to piss poor training but once you do and you get your first year in, then you got it made, just don't fall for the b s recruiters will tell you talk to the other drivers about companies your interested in and follow your gut good luck

I loved your commentary about driving its so true. When I started driving in 1972 team driving and 32 to 37 cents a mile. Then I went armored, what a surprise, portal to portal pay I was Shocked plus a cash allowance per day and company picked up all expenses. It was great, but the stress finally gets to you not the driving, but the oodles of valuables in the trailer 48 footers. 5 years of it was enough for me. Started driving city bus spent 43 years driving that and retired. 1 reference to new drivers they have tp love to drive. Be safe out there.
I’m not home as much as I like to be but with new technologies and being with a good company you can balance things out. I don’t run as hard as I use to but ppl need balance in their life . Work smarter not harder old guy told me once ,only took many years to understand that ha ha .
Trucking isn't an easy life, but for those who are called to it, they don't want to do anything else. My dad drove from the 60's to 96 when his health finally made him stop. I remember him being gone for a month at time when I was young and couldn't wait for him to come home. It was hard not having him around. Mom said when I was very small he was gone so much that I didn't recognize him when he came home. Trucking is hard on the body and dad was deaf in his left ear because of the stack. His night vision was bad and I don't know if that was because of all of the night driving. Like I said trucking isn't easy, but if you are called to it that its what you are meant to do. If dad's health hadn't gotten so bad and he was still with us, I'm sure he would be out on the road. Thanks Kurt for the videos.

Your so right about trucking. Once it’s in your blood it’s there to stay. I drove for more then 20 years OTR/Regional and local. Stopped about 4-5 years ago and well I’m back behind the wheel on weekends pulling doubles for FedEx. It just called me back and I couldn’t say no. I love trucking and trucks. The day I sold my truck and went to work for a Freight outfit was the day I started making good money and being treated like a human being. That was over 30 years ago. Couple million miles was enough. I enjoyed it when I was young. I wouldn't take one for a gift now.
Back in my youth I always looked over the fence and admired all the green grass, and dreamed of how much better life would be "over there". Now a few years later, I've come to the realization that the grass is brown on both sides of the fence. :-) Ha Ha!
Kurt, i would love to get out on that open road ! But you either need experience or a cdl school graduation. Hard to get either one. The $5,000 cost for the school is hard to choke up currently.i guess im looking for that big break to come my way. Hopefully its in his plan !
Hello Dave, First and foremost I believe it behooves you (or anyone) to take the time to see what if anything is offered for training in your area (Hopefully moving is an available option But it could mean some delay establishing status) For instance the state of Illinois has a program called WEI (Workforce Equity Initiative)
Keep preaching. Trucking is awesome. There are a lot of pros just like you said and some cons. But generally the pros out weigh the cons. Like you said you have to find the balance for your family. It helps greatly if they support you also!

That was the nice thing about hauling feed premix, stayed in small rural towns over night, usually at a co-op or implement dealer or a small truck stop
If ya want a "normal homelife" for the love of God dont... I SAID DO NOT become a truck driver!!! Kurt has a special situation. His wife supports his decision and understands.. most "civilians" (or non trucking people) DONT!!
I drove for 35 years and I totally agree with everything you said. I would still be driving if I didn't have diabetic neuropathy and living a wheelchair. I always pretty much agree with your point of view. Drive safe and God bless you and your family

Incredible job laying out the facts as always! For sure it's a lifestyle, not a job! I think one other point to consider is the potential harm's way you might be putting yourself in. You will travel to various cities you might not be familiar with, and be forced to deliver in areas that are not always safe to be in.
Great video as usual. Growing up all I ever wanted to do was drive a truck. So during my last 2 years of high school in 79 and 1980 I worked for a truck leasing company servicing and washing trucks. After high school being 19 I still had to work odd jobs until I was old enough to hit the road. But as you point out there have been many days I have questioned my decision over the last 35 years but I have been able to see parts of the country that I would never have seen working in a plant. As aggravating as it has been I would still do it over again. So glad you can use on ramps for your breaks, on the east coast it’s a good way to get ticketed and get a DOT check. Not enough parking for trucks out here, if you don’t find a parking spot early here in the evening you won’t find one after dark in a rest area or truck stop. Informative video today Kurt. I traveled with my Grandfather back in the late 70's/Early 80's, Apparently i loved the Sleeper....LOL. Being Disabled and confined to a wheelchair, I wouldn't make a good driver as it appears there is a lot of in and out of the truck. But would love to see the Country side. Do you ever find that other drivers ever seem to get irritated with you when you are setting up the camera to get the parking, hooking, unhooking, backing Clips?
When I drove I pulled dry van and it was live load and unload (with an occasional drop and hook/but not many) I see most of your refridgerated loads are D&H (that's VERY nice). When I was driving for a fleet company my pay was .25cents per mile and I had to stay out a long time to make any money. I thought I would stay one year (which would of paid for my driving school) and then find someone else but I stayed (cause all of the company's I looked into were all the same) as where I was and buy the time I got to year four (4) I was so burned out I couldn't stand looking at the inside of any truck any longer so I quit.

Kurt you have it figured out. I may have said this before after almost 40 years in the business I’ve met a lot of drivers and the successful ones have an understanding of the business like yours. Before I was on the carrier side I worked for a shipper. One day a driver was on the dock watching us load his truck. He took a look around and said “I used to work in a place like this but some was always watching me and telling me what to do so I started driving a truck.” That is not a reason to be truck driver. He evidently hadn’t driven long enough to realize that when you are a driver you have all kinds of people watching you and telling you what to do: dispatchers, shippers, the DOT, 4 wheelers other drivers. Truck drivers are probably one of the most highly supervised jobs there is.

I thought I was the only one, that when I dream it's all about when I used to be on the road or the trucking industry. And I was in it for 35 years. I'm generally lost because back in the day we didn't even have cell phones we had nothing a map in a pair of reading glasses. But I'm with you on the dreams. I don't know why but every time I have a dream now and I've been retired for about 8 or 9 years it's about the damn road in the trucks. God bless brother.

A lot of service industries can say the exact same thing. It's not reserved just for truckers.

Hi i like what you have to say about trucking . The truth never hurt anyone. My neighbor owned his own truck. I got to go on a day trip with him when I was very young. That started my love of trucks. Trucking gave me so much and it also cost me heaps. Two marriages not seeing my child take her frist steps. Frist day at school. It toke me a long time to really understand trucking and what you give up to be a truck driver. I am thankful to all truck drivers around the world who keep as feed clothed and in making sure we have a life. I watch you and trucking together and I believe it's people like you who help the layman understand what you do fur us all. Ty stay safe take care cos we care

This was spot on episode what you were saying was so real it’s almost like being a preacher. You have to have a calling to really doing a truck driving job if you want to be successful at it episode is completely amazing. Happy Trucking.

Back when I was 21 I wanted to be a truck driver. But, 2 accidents and a speeding ticket within a 3 month period killed that dream. My cousin Bill was a truck driver. Gas tanker all over the UP. crazy driving skills. Rain, snow, sleet he handled it all. Home everyday and a beautiful KW. Big family man. Awesome dad. I was so proud of him and jealous. He was home every night for his family. He passed from cancer two years ago. If my desk job comes to an end, ie company owner retiring, maybe then. My wife is not too crazy about it. Maybe still a dream. Who knows. I do respect you soo much for what you do. Have a great week and please stay safe.

The reason why I stopped driving (🇸🇪) after 7yers was my bad back. I loaded/ unloaded my self, parcel loads (different stops with everything that fits in a box 60t rig).
It’s a god job but it can be tyersum for your body.

The only time I've gotten paid for staying in my company truck was during the flood recovery working for b n s f and union pacific hauling rock repairing the railroad right of away hauling from different locations from Kansas City Missouri as far north as Sioux falls south Dakota.
Well, I was with a company up here in Canada that payed me $28/hour and .47 cents a mile. You are right you get nothing when your truck isn't moving, but when I'm moving the trailer empty, I get payed by the hour and when it is Loaded It's By the mile. When I'm not moving and parked for the night "NOPE" nothing, oh well. Love the video, keep them coming Kurt and be safe out there.

Truck driving takes a special breed of man. Truck driver for 24 years. Would still love to drive at age 69 but diabetes want let me get my license back. Never gets out of your blood. My dad drove back in the sixties for .05 cents per mile.

I've been watching your videos with your dog Opie for a while, he's a beautiful dog. For 17 years I drove an 18-meter bus in the city of Oldenburg in Germany, followed by refrigerated trucks for a few years. I envy you as a truck driver, with your beautiful trucks, just Wooow. I would love to drive trucks in the USA or Canada. Unfortunately the current situation doesn't work anymore, so I just have to say, I like to keep watching your videos. Lg from Germany

I'm currently trying to get into this trucking world. Yesterday I failed my permit test again, waiting to retake it. But he's right, for me though I going in it for the experience. And of course the paycheck, but mostly a different lifestyle. Great video Shmidt.
Hang in there brother when I first got mine took me four road tests pretty much due to piss poor training but once you do and you get your first year in, then you got it made, just don't fall for the b s recruiters will tell you talk to the other drivers about companies your interested in and follow your gut good luck

Good luck to you bro hang in there its a long journey from the time you step into the DMV office to take the permit to the time you get into the maneuvers part of it and driving the truck. i just got my first job today i graduated trucking school on 6/28. i recommend a app on the iphone CDL Prep, its great application to help you study for your tests questions are identical to the DMV tests

I loved your commentary about driving its so true. When I started driving in 1972 team driving and 32 to 37 cents a mile. Then I went armored, what a surprise, portal to portal pay I was Shocked plus a cash allowance per day and company picked up all expenses. It was great, but the stress finally gets to you not the driving, but the oodles of valuables in the trailer 48 footers.
5 years of it was enough for me. Started driving city bus spent 43 years driving that and retired. 1 reference to new drivers they have tp love to drive. Be safe out there.
I’m not home as much as I like to be but with new technologies and being with a good company you can balance things out. I don’t run as hard as I use to but ppl need balance in their life . Work smarter not harder old guy told me once ,only took many years to understand that ha ha .

Trucking isn't an easy life, but for those who are called to it, they don't want to do anything else. My dad drove from the 60's to 96 when his health finally made him stop. I remember him being gone for a month at time when I was young and couldn't wait for him to come home. It was hard not having him around. Mom said when I was very small he was gone so much that I didn't recognize him when he came home. Trucking is hard on the body and dad was deaf in his left ear because of the stack. His night vision was bad and I don't know if that was because of all of the night driving. Like I said trucking isn't easy, but if you are called to it that its what you are meant to do. If dad's health hadn't gotten so bad and he was still with us, I'm sure he would be out on the road. Thanks Kurt for the videos.

Your so right about trucking. Once it’s in your blood it’s there to stay. I drove for more then 20 years OTR/Regional and local. Stopped about 4-5 years ago and well I’m back behind the wheel on weekends pulling doubles for FedEx. It just called me back and I couldn’t say no. I love trucking and trucks. The day I sold my truck and went to work for a Freight outfit was the day I started making good money and being treated like a human being. That was over 30 years ago.
Couple million miles was enough. I enjoyed it when I was young. I wouldn't take one for a gift now.
Back in my youth I always looked over the fence and admired all the green grass, and dreamed of how much better life would be "over there". Now a few years later, I've come to the realization that the grass is brown on both sides of the fence. :-) Ha Ha!

Kurt, i would love to get out on that open road ! But you either need experience or a cdl school graduation. Hard to get either one. The $5,000 cost for the school is hard to choke up currently.i guess im looking for that big break to come my way. Hopefully its in his plan !
Hello Dave, First and foremost I believe it behooves you (or anyone) to take the time to see what if anything is offered for training in your area (Hopefully moving is an available option But it could mean some delay establishing status) For instance the state of Illinois has a program called WEI (Workforce Equity Initiative)
(imho) A few other options would be contacting companies like Schneider or possibly even Halvor Lines

Keep preaching. Trucking is awesome. There are a lot of pros just like you said and some cons. But generally the pros out weigh the cons. Like you said you have to find the balance for your family. It helps greatly if they support you also!
Everything you said in the video is spot on, I have bad days n good days I have more good days then bad. I enjoy driving n it doesn't feel like a job , I knew I wanted to be a truck driver at a young age. U n Opie stay safe n see ya next time

That was the nice thing about hauling feed premix, stayed in small rural towns over night, usually at a co-op or implement dealer or a small truck stop
If ya want a "normal homelife" for the love of God dont... I SAID DO NOT become a truck driver!!! Kurt has a special situation. His wife supports his decision and understands.. most "civilians" (or non trucking people) DONT!!

I drove for 35 years and I totally agree with everything you said. I would still be driving if I didn't have diabetic neuropathy and living a wheelchair. I always pretty much agree with your point of view. Drive safe and God bless you and your family

Incredible job laying out the facts as always! For sure it's a lifestyle, not a job! I think one other point to consider is the potential harm's way you might be putting yourself in. You will travel to various cities you might not be familiar with, and be forced to deliver in areas that are not always safe to be in.
Great video as usual. Growing up all I ever wanted to do was drive a truck. So during my last 2 years of high school in 79 and 1980 I worked for a truck leasing company servicing and washing trucks. After high school being 19 I still had to work odd jobs until I was old enough to hit the road. But as you point out there have been many days I have questioned my decision over the last 35 years but I have been able to see parts of the country that I would never have seen working in a plant. As aggravating as it has been I would still do it over again. So glad you can use on ramps for your breaks, on the east coast it’s a good way to get ticketed and get a DOT check. Not enough parking for trucks out here, if you don’t find a parking spot early here in the evening you won’t find one after dark in a rest area or truck stop. Informative video today Kurt. I traveled with my Grandfather back in the late 70's/Early 80's, Apparently i loved the Sleeper....LOL. Being Disabled and confined to a wheelchair, I wouldn't make a good driver as it appears there is a lot of in and out of the truck. But would love to see the Country side.
Do you ever find that other drivers ever seem to get irritated with you when you are setting up the camera to get the parking, hooking, unhooking, backing Clips?
When I drove I pulled dry van and it was live load and unload (with an occasional drop and hook/but not many) I see most of your refridgerated loads are D&H (that's VERY nice). When I was driving for a fleet company my pay was .25cents per mile and I had to stay out a long time to make any money. I thought I would stay one year (which would of paid for my driving school) and then find someone else but I stayed (cause all of the company's I looked into were all the same) as where I was and buy the time I got to year four (4) I was so burned out I couldn't stand looking at the inside of any truck any longer so I quit.

Kurt you have it figured out. I may have said this before after almost 40 years in the business I’ve met a lot of drivers and the successful ones have an understanding of the business like yours. Before I was on the carrier side I worked for a shipper. One day a driver was on the dock watching us load his truck. He took a look around and said “I used to work in a place like this but some was always watching me and telling me what to do so I started driving a truck.” That is not a reason to be truck driver. He evidently hadn’t driven long enough to realize that when you are a driver you have all kinds of people watching you and telling you what to do: dispatchers, shippers, the DOT, 4 wheelers other drivers. Truck drivers are probably one of the most highly supervised jobs there is.

I thought I was the only one, that when I dream it's all about when I used to be on the road or the trucking industry. And I was in it for 35 years. I'm generally lost because back in the day we didn't even have cell phones we had nothing a map in a pair of reading glasses. But I'm with you on the dreams. I don't know why but every time I have a dream now and I've been retired for about 8 or 9 years it's about the damn road in the trucks. God bless brother.
