- We would only fall short on describing just how incredible of an operation this brilliant homeowner has created to feed not only his own family, but also those who come to visit. You just have to witness it for yourself! In this special feature, you will find a whole range of permaculture techniques & some uncommon techniques, like raising freshwater clams & freshwater lobsters, along with the tilapia in his spring-fed pond system in Perez Zeledon, Costa Rica.
Francis Mora, or Fran MoraChincilla, is another new Tico friend (i.e. native) to Costa Rica & we got the lucky chance to meet him, in order to take you on a special tour of his incredible homestead, all of this is thanks to Brendon McKeon of Natural Living Designs & Eco Oasis' TH-cam channel. Francis is such an inspiration! The multi-tiered pond system he designed is just an incredible! It’s not often that you hear of people who truly produce a majority of their food on their own land, but he is doing it, and absolutely thriving!
And the meal we had at the end of the visit... first class incredible! Fresh tilapia, sun cooked beans and rice... and the homemade medicinal herb tincture he let us try was very cool.
Discovery Duo couldn’t agree more! This place was next level. He’s definitely filled the proteins gap with home scale production.
That was an amazing lunch bro! I could of had seconds and not sure why I didn’t with those extremely fair rates. Do you remember all the cool things up cycled from tires?!

Those "clams" are called mussels, we have them in America. My Grandpaw used to get them out of the Ohio river near Cincinnati before the dams raised the river level. He said it was common to get them over a foot long tip to tip.

Dave Lawson he actually grows rice for grains. He grows plenty of avocados and macadamia nuts for fats. Then presses his coconuts for oil. The video was already super long we couldn’t hit everything. Brendon has a video of him doing the process on his channel.
Now I want a pond system just as this one in my garden for clams, fish and lobster. So inspiring.
My boyfriend and I just started our own proyect 3 months ago in the southern part of CR,(Puerto Jimènez)....oh boy it's hard. We built a small shack house..lol.....I started our vegetable garden. There's so much to do and so little time and money. I hope I have the strengh and patience to keep going. I've seen the most amazing birds in here......Red Macaws, tucans, parrots, hawks, titì monkeys, lizards, frogs, everywhere. I'm planning to build a cabin to open our proyect to anyone who wants to come visit here and experience nature first hand.

Most bat’s species are doing fine in the wild. But we have also the vampire bats sucking blood from farm animals and are a vector for rabies. Whenever rabies appears also fatal for humans , vampires are caught at night with nets and killed. Rabies is the main problem but also cattle losing blood…

Freshwater clams are found in most of the riverways in Fiji, in the Southwest Pacific. They are sold in our local markets and make a delicious dish.

Really informative ...specially on the recycling ability of the fresh water clams to clean up the water in the pond.
I'm just wondering why people want to eat them. Filters of the water, that says enough...
It really depends on what you put in the water, and where you let them grow. If you didn’t put contaminants (nitrogen rich detergent, heavy metals, toxic fluids, pathogenic things) and fully cooked them before consumption, it will be safe to eat. If the water is highly contaminated, and the clams is undercooked or raw, you’ll probably get vibriosis (or other nasty disease).
If you still don’t want to eat them, you can still use them for other stuff. Like making compost, food for wildlife animals, calcium carbonate (from shells) for construction, etc. Either way don’t let their nature to accumulate toxins discourage you from getting them, they are a fantastic biological filter :)

Nice seeing the Australian (Crayfish) we dont call them lobster and also we have native fresh water clams but only half the size of the ones here but here we call them fresh water mussel's.

Hey Pete, great video Francis definitely knows his stuff! We call the Australian crayfish you showed 'yabbies' here in Australia-most farms have dams with them growing. There's also freshwater fish and 'shrimp' -we say prawns, which live deep underground in drought then come to the surface in floods, they can spend decades there if need be! 👍🏻

Yes the funniest prawn story recently was when the prawns surfaced on Uluru (if you don't know it-big sacred rock, middle of Australia) when there were massive rains in 2017. First time that had been noticed, but was probably something indigenous Australians have known for millennia. Bill Mollison mentions springs formation and native prawns in IntroTo Permaculture if you have it -one of the benefits of knowing about natural water harvesting. Francis might know certain species that do the same thing in Costa Rica?? ☺️

I love farming, because, it's my blood, all my life all I grew up in farm, before I move big cities, I loved and miss the nature and living in a Farm. Specially tropical farms, all the fruits and vegetables on the tropical farm and we had long beautiful Indian Ocean Beach, but, we didn't had no Resorts, because we lived what they called. ( the third World countries) so other than that. we were very much happier than when we moved to the big cities.

I've been pulling this type of clam out of the river near my house in Kansas for decades.
Those giant clams are a common food in Turkey.
I have seen plenty of them in Iran but they are not eaten normally over there.
I kind of figured that's why he had them in the pond because they actually clean the water it's like a water filter on those cuz they're doing something beneficial for themselves are eating the clams we used to have them in Florida like that but you don't see him like that anymore...

There are tons of green and brown leaves ready for composting of that farm.
I got a backyard garden in the big City full of Squash plant and their leaves are as big as a big table plates in size. My Secret is 90 Percent Compost with 10 Percent native soil.
