I’ve been a collector since 1999, I’ve come by many blitz and NBA jams, I’ve only seen a dedicated open ice in the arcades back in the days and another for sale in 2006. You’re right it’s a very rare cab. It’s my favorite midway sports game, I love 90’s NHL.
Seems like they pop up in the Chicago area most often, which makes sense. We had a dedicated machine back in the 90s at the arcade I used to go to. I just need that back in my life!
I'd combine options 2 and 4... FOR NOW Put Open Ice into the game and keep looking for the correct cabinet, then when you have it, turn it back into Blitz and sell it.
I agree with this one. You will eventually find the machine you need for Open Ice. Dont force a perfectly good cab to be something when it is far from ideal for you, think it will just leave you frustrated in the long run. You are clearly after a game specific cab. I am sure you can get this one sold for just as much or more to find the ideal cab for open ice. But also not a total lose either, you got that sweet Police Trainer Dynamo cab at least for $100.
I agree, I’m certainly not going to be stripping the sides or the control panel. I have a potential buyer already and I feel good that at least the marquee lights now. 😂
I’d go with option 4. You should have an easier time finding an Open Ice pcb you can play to tide you over. Good luck with the search! I remember playing a desiccated Open Ice back in 2000 at a local bowling alley. I already owned the PS1 home port and I didn’t realize there was an arcade version. Not too long after that, I bought an Open Ice pcb for my super gun system.
Yeah, I have had the pcb for a while. Definitely my go to game in the arcade at one point and the single reason I bought a PSX. I'll be selling the cab to a friend and continuing the hunt.
I’ll probably never get into this scene ( it’s so time-consuming and expensive) , but I’m glad I can live vicariously through your videos . I did watch the previous video, it was interesting hearing about the yellowing of the marquee on the last vid. Yeah I wouldn’t tear up that one just to make the artwork fit . I would probably go with option 4.
Thanks man. I’m always hopeful people are simply interested still watch. I never know how true that is though. I’m with you here on the cabinet, I’m definitely not stripping those sides.
This is the reason why I love your channel. You're a honest content creator, that loves and preserves the Arcade Culture. You are a real treasure in a sea full of posers wannabe. Thanx! ♥️🙏
I appreciate that man. It’s become very apparent to me over the last few years how easy it is to stage or flat out not be genuine about a situation or product. I of course hope that people watch and the channel grows, but that would never come ahead of just being real here.
I feel your pain on not being able to find the machine you really want. I have been looking for an Alien 3 The Gun by Sega for 3 years now and only seeing it in Asia once. Fix it up and sell it, it may be someone else's dream machine.
Not sure if you ever found an open ice arcade but there is one for sale on market place in spring grove Illinois by my house. Its underHome use only midway open ice arcade game Its mint too
I vote option 4 too. Is there any reason you can't just use the dimesions of an Open Ice cabinet and get the wood cut so you can build a brand new one?
There really isn’t a reason outside of the cabinet itself then needing everything; hunting monitor, brackets, wiring, building new power supply, etc. It’s doable, but a lot more work than repurposing and existing setup if that makes sense.
I’d go with option 2 for now UNTIL you find the correct cab to convert. Then you can still easily de-convert the blitz and flip it. Best of both options.
As soon as you mentioned wanting to make it an Open Ice cab I knew the cab wasn't the same. I always called the NBA Jam cabs "Ted Danson" cabs since I viewed them as having a big forehead lol! I guess the Gauntlet Legends cabs are really more Ted Danson...but anyway. I'm sure you've done some work to the cab so far, the 49 way sticks probably needed a cleaning and maybe you can do a fix here and there to resell it at a slightly higher price. I'd try that route or breaking even first. If it doesn't sell within a reasonable time frame, you've done what you can and I doubt anyone would have a reason to be upset with you. Also, I know there's an arcade in Des Moines, IA (Up Down DSM) that has an Open Ice. Its a long shot but you could see if they want to sell!
Haha, the Ted Danson! I’m 99% certain this is being sold to my friend at cost so no worries. Free marquee repair for him. Overall it’s disappointing but I did still get the $100 Dynamo out of this deal!
@@ScarletSprites Sounds like it all worked out then! Hopefully you can find an Open Ice cab, I think I've seen it maybe twice since the 90s. Even then, it was rare for me. Texas wasn't huge on hockey as you might imagine haha.
Can you elaborate a little bit on the cabinet differences? The mk1 cab is totally different altogether, which was used in the video. So mk2-mk4 and showtime, nba jam, open ice are the same? While all blitz cabs are not as deep as the mk2 crew?
NBA Jam, Hangtime, Showtime, SportStation, and Open Ice use the same cabinet with the elongated head. While the MK cab fronts are different, the header size is consistent across them. Blitz and Blitz 99 use the same cabinet as MKs 2-4. Again, the original MK sides are similar but as you noted it has the bowed front.
Sounds like you're probably gonna sell it and I understand. If you weren't doing that, I'd say the UMK3 conversion would have been the best option, artwork and marquee be damned. I'm sure they do look good but you didn't even have Blitz 99 in the cab, it was 2000 so in the end its still not 100% accurate anyway. Also Open Ice is such a fun game. I've only ever seen one in an original cab at an ice rink way back when the game first came out in the 90s. I also ended up with a board but sadly the audio isn't working and I haven't yet figured out the fix for that. fwiw I plan to play it on a head-to-head Astro City cab setup, which is also what I'm already doing for NBA Jam, the DnD Capcom games and several other 3-4 player games. Obviously not fully authentic but it's been a hit so far with everyone who has tried it.
I say option 4 my friend. Someone will love it and it’s honestly in pretty great shape. I didn’t know that about the open ice cabinet being a different shape, pretty cool!
Option 4 it is. It’s going to a good home where it won’t be stripped. The buyer may swap in the Vegas board for showtime but that’s the only change. Overall a wash which is fine with me.
My two options are the following. I would sell the cab and try to make my money back. The thought of not having the correct cabinet for open ice (my favorite sports game as well) would bother the heck out of me. The other option I would consider is why not make it a MK3 cab if you already have the board. You do have options no doubt. I'm sure you'll make the one that's best for you.
Thanks man. I'm going to sell it to a friend at cost. He has no interest in gutting or changing it and I told him I'd help him get the board swapped for a Vegas version w/ Showtime.
@@ScarletSprites Good luck finding the open Ice cab. Like you stated in your video, they are hard to come by. If ever get a hold of one please make a video for it.
What about option 5? Fix up the rough edges on the Blitz ‘99 art, then put the new vinyl art over the top of the Blitz art. You aren’t stripping it and it would be somewhat reversible
Oooh, I don’t know. That seems like a waste of the artwork that I’d need to turnaround and buy again eventually. Probably would just live with the Blitz sides and replace marquee/sticks only.
I missed that unfortunately. It's so hard to monitor all the sales channels really. My day will come eventually for this. It's getting ridiculous though.
@@ScarletSprites Ah that's too bad. Yeah, too many places to look, and none of them allow you to set up alerts like eBay does. I'll certainly keep my eyes peeled, I'm sure a nice one will pop up eventually.
I assume you will sell it at cost and lick your wounds. But I suggest making it an MK cab if you don't already have one. That's a great addition to any arcade for casual visitors. But maybe those are easier to come by without investing a ton of time and effort into? Also I love Open Ice as well. Fun game and that Referee animation for the puck-drop still stands out in my mind. So good.
Oh man, I'm sorry you went through all of this ! Personally, if I REALLY wanted Open Ice, I'd use your last option... Clean up the Blitz and sell "as is" working, then find an NBA jam cab for Ice. Good luck with your choice !
Yeah that’s just insane imo. It’s really not worth even half of that. Major sun fade on both sides too. I secured an NBA Jam cabinet for $200 and will get to work this summer.
@@ScarletSprites that's awesome bro! Can't wait to see how it turns out! Yea I wonder if he saw your video and increased his price hahaha. I'm also about to get my first video cabinet. Keep up the good work!
Hard to say you won’t do option 4. The rest will require work and leave you unsatisfied. And a flip could better justify your next purchase. But the conversion option I guess you could grow to love. And I wouldn’t know the difference. Like a lot of folks, I’ve never seen an Open Ice anywhere.
I did the same but opposite as you I got 2 nba jam cabinets thinking I was going to make a blitz from them. I would trade you but I’m sure you are no where near Minnesota
That sucks! Midway slightly altering the design and screwing us years later. I did just recently grab an old NBA Jam cab that got turned into a Blitz 99. Work in progress. Best wishes with find the right cab for Blitz.
Im not too much into hockey these days but my first game I went to was a 1996 Avs game when they were still just basically the Quebec Nordiqs, and I got to witness a slaughter of the Ny Rangers 10-1
The Avs were really good in that era. Their roster was flat out insane from all of the draft picks and trades they made (including unloading Lindros for Forsberg). I loved watching them square off in a series against Detroit or SJ. Those were the days.
If it makes you feel better I made pretty much the same mistake. Except I have a gutted showtime cab I was going to turn into mk2. Just got the pcb a week ago and the art is on order…🤦
Option 4 does pose a risk, still. Whoever buys it may just strip it anyway. If it were me, and I had the space, I’d just add it to my collection and continue my search for the correct cab. If you really don’t want it in your collection, though, I’d turn it into MK or rampage. I just don’t see someone not destroying it and turning it into a raspberry pi cab or something. Unless you find someone in the community that wants it
I know the buyer, so it’s all going to work out. He is basically keeping it as is but will eventually replace the board with a Vegas so that he can have Showtime. Everyone wins.
I have an Open Ice sitting next to my NBA Jam TE. I got a good deal on it almost 10 years ago and have loved it ever since. Gets a lot of playing time when people are over.
@@ScarletSprites Having grown up in Chicago, I’ve had the opportunity to play so many arcades since we were a test market. And it’s definitely a gem. Also, I recommend option 4.
I made a somewhat similar mistake when picking out art for a Konami 4-player cab. Apparently the side for the TMNT cab (mono speaker) and Simpsons (dual speakers) has ever so slightly different dimensions on the sides as well.
I'd keep it as is. I have been attempting to make a scale replica of a Mortal Kombat cabinet and didn't realize that NBA Jam (who's measurements I found) were different than the Mortal Kombat. Good to know.
Fairly confident that you'll likely be selling it to recoup costs, out of curiosity, you're wood working is fairly good from your other videos. Have you considered just building the desired cabinet from scratch? I get that you probably prefer originals, just wondering if it's a Ship of Theseus scenario with all the restoration you were planning to do. Love the channel btw!
My woodworking really isn’t that good tbh. I’m pretty sure I’m short on tools to build a repro too. I’ve looked to see if anyone like Prince Arcades offers a repro cabinet but no one seems to have the larger head design. The other preferable thing about repurposing a cabinet is that everything is already there; monitor, chassis, mounting brackets, etc. it’s definitely an option though.
I believe I have the correct Midway cabinet your looking for I been trying to figure out out what it was from I knew it was midway! I can send some pics of it
I think the less painful solution for you is to sell the machine. To have the work to make a UMK3 machine that you didn't even want... or even worst, make the convertion, regret it and just end up selling it. It's just not worth it imo
Let’s talk in trade, I own a NBA Jam TE cab? Not sure if it is the style you need as I am out the country. I do have some photos of my cab when I got it to share with you privately though.
Yeah, the Jam cabinet is what Open Ice was in. My friend who helped move this asked to buy it and I sold it to him at cost. Otherwise a trade would have been ideal. Hope you are doing well man!
Yeah I would go with option 4 put it for sale and/or offer a trade for an open ice cab. Maybe some one has one not for sale but would consider a trade.
The first thing that pops in my head is that if the seller underestimated the condition of the cabinet, you probably paid a lot less than the value of the cabinet, correct? Is there the possibility of flipping it as is (or fixing the things you think should be fixed) and selling it for a profit? You might still be able to work out ahead on this mistake.
Although I have no interest in the Blitz games, it seems a shame to re-purpose something in such good condition that could go to someone who'd love it just as it is.
Option 4. It might take more time, but I'd prefer that over destroying the artwork. There will always be somebody who wants the Blitz cabinet as much as you want Open Ice. Just a bit more cleaning and selling to do, and you'll soon find the cab you really want, plus you'll have the extra space for it. ;)
Please save & restore the NFL Blitz cabinet. There are plenty of people who'll want that cabinet. You'd be surprised how life turns out. You've been trying for so long for NHL Open Ice & it'll turn up soon when you least expect it. Good Luck!!
Thanks man. I’m pretty much just waiting on a day for a friend to pick this up. He gets a pretty decent cab with fixed marquee at cost. Not a bad setup at all.
@@ScarletSprites this is what you should do since there’s such a high demand for it from your fan base. Start looking for a replacement cab that will work with your open ice artwork you bought and then get it. Right now in the meantime while looking, leave it as a blitz and throw your 2 on 2 open ice pcb inside and just enjoy playing it
While I dont think the game is that "important" to preserve like say, an original Baby Pac, or Big Red Neo - I can't blame ya man. I like cabs that are nice and stock. And hey, you can always sell it for some $$ to find that Open Ice.
Why don’t you cover the original art with something like a lamination or thin lexan and then apply the new art over the top. That way it can always be restored.
Sell it I would . I have a zookeeper, Mad Planets, Krull, Dk3,Qbert, mini Gorf and mini Robotron. Plus a Sinistar I'm working on 1multi and. Taito Game room classic
@@ScarletSprites Awesome because it would be a shame to destroy that cabinet was in ridiculously good condition I'm like you I won't let original stuff go My cuber somebody converted to a robocopIt was a train wreck it took me quite a while to send everything down and redo it Same thing with my mad planet's somebody turned into a bowling game It's really sickening that people end up doing stupid things to games Sometimes I can understand the whole you know don't want to mess with CRT so they put an LCD in with a conversion board But when you have a cabinet that that noise your bus butt is just a sell it and try to find something else
Option 4 seems to be the best option for the end goal; I’m guessing that compromising on authenticity of the cab style with a conversion will be something you’ll never be fully comfortable with….keep searching and when you get the real-deal it will feel that much more rewarding! 🥳
If I were you I'd go option 2. If not then option 4 but only if you knew that the buyer wasn't going to hack it up into something stupid like a 60 in 1. ie: sell it too a collector
I have someone interested who is most definitely not going to be doing that. In fact, I think his goal is to scout for a Vegas board and then swap out so he can run Blitz and Showtime.
Wow. I never even knew about NHL Open Ice. Being a recent hockey fan with the Kraken, now I want to try this! Go to option 4. Don't sacrifice the original dream.

The Avs were really good in that era. Their roster was flat out insane from all of the draft picks and trades they made (including unloading Lindros for Forsberg). I loved watching them square off in a series against Detroit or SJ. Those were the days.
I’d go with option 4, saves the original art and gives you another shot at a proper open ice.
If it makes you feel better I made pretty much the same mistake. Except I have a gutted showtime cab I was going to turn into mk2. Just got the pcb a week ago and the art is on order…🤦
We should trade! 😂
@@ScarletSprites If your sale falls through I’m in Ohio lol.
What’s a good price for 2 player sport station cabinet? Thanks
Most people have forgotten about the game or never even knew it existed. It’s one of those arcade “hidden gems” if there are such things.
@@ScarletSprites Having grown up in Chicago, I’ve had the opportunity to play so many arcades since we were a test market. And it’s definitely a gem. Also, I recommend option 4.
Dang that's a bummer man. I think I'd just touch it up a bit and re sell it original, then look for the right style cab
That’s the plan. Cut my losses.
Those are some of the most awesome arcade cabs I’ve ever seen . You have a great collection 👍
Turn it into an ultimate mk3 or sell it. If u already have the board I'd do it
I made a somewhat similar mistake when picking out art for a Konami 4-player cab. Apparently the side for the TMNT cab (mono speaker) and Simpsons (dual speakers) has ever so slightly different dimensions on the sides as well.
Well, lol, this is certainly good to know too. I didn’t know there were dimension differences in the single vs stereo speaker cabs either.
Now you told everybody, nah nah nah! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I'd keep it as is. I have been attempting to make a scale replica of a Mortal Kombat cabinet and didn't realize that NBA Jam (who's measurements I found) were different than the Mortal Kombat. Good to know.
Yeah, definitely leaving it untouched. Glad the info was helpful to you too!
Man, I was thinking a Broken Arrow situation or you had a fire. Ended up being a Wuh-Woh Shaggy! Are you leaning option 4?
Definitely leaning option 4 at this point.
Hope you are doing well man!
id say sell it
i suspect any other option will bother you long term
I think you might know me too well.
Yeah I would go with option 4 put it for sale and/or offer a trade for an open ice cab. Maybe some one has one not for sale but would consider a trade.
That’s pretty much where my head is as well.
I'm pretty sure I could flip it. I'm probably going to sell it for what I paid to a friend though.
@@ScarletSprites That's even better. You get to help out a friend who was looking for it. :-)
ya option 4 would make you happiest and just wait for correct cab for open ice 😎
Agreed, you know me all too well.
@@ScarletSprites 😎👍🍺🍺
I adore UMK3 but I would preserve the Blitz machine. Nice video as always!
For me options 2 and 3 are the correct ones.
So whats the price brah?
Hah, selling tickets a friend who helped me pick this up. I love that so many people were interested though!
Option 4 all the way. That's too nice to destroy.
Sell it to me! I'm in the hershey area! I've always wanted a true blitz can
Option 4 for sure!
That’s where I’m at.
Although I have no interest in the Blitz games, it seems a shame to re-purpose something in such good condition that could go to someone who'd love it just as it is.
Agreed, I already have a friend who wants to buy it and that’s what’s going to happen to this one.
@@ScarletSprites Noice!
Option 4.
It might take more time, but I'd prefer that over destroying the artwork.
There will always be somebody who wants the Blitz cabinet as much as you want Open Ice.
Just a bit more cleaning and selling to do, and you'll soon find the cab you really want, plus you'll have the extra space for it. ;)
My friend who helped load and move this wants it. Definitely a good home where it won’t be stripped or ruined in any way. The search goes on!
@@ScarletSprites Nice. ;)
Please save & restore the NFL Blitz cabinet. There are plenty of people who'll want that cabinet. You'd be surprised how life turns out. You've been trying for so long for NHL Open Ice & it'll turn up soon when you least expect it. Good Luck!!
Yep, cabinet is already sold to a friend. The search continues.
Option 5: Clean up and re-sell Blitz, put money towards either buying Open Ice or building one from scratch.
That’s exactly what is going to happen.
I’d say keep it all original… even though UMK3 is my fav fighting game 🤣. Enjoyed this video man and learned a few things about Midway cabinet design!
Thanks man. I’m pretty much just waiting on a day for a friend to pick this up. He gets a pretty decent cab with fixed marquee at cost. Not a bad setup at all.
Option 4 is what I’d pick.
That’s what it’s going to be.
Option 4.
Option 4
Yeah, you’re feeling that vibe too eh?
Option 4 you sell to me and I can be there in 3 hours to take it away
Haha, nice! I’m surprised by the number of people who have said they’ll take it.
Yes, a friend is going to take it and keep it as is. Glad that it all worked out in the end. The pursuit continues.
I’m interested if you decide to sell!
Thanks man, it already has a potential buyer lined up.
Look I know this video is supposed to be about the cabinet but that Batman Hoodie is Sick my man!
Haha, you’re the third person to call that out today. It’s from Hot Topic a few years back. Modeled after the Red Hood.
@@ScarletSprites well is is Fantastic! I love it!
Why don’t you cover the original art with something like a lamination or thin lexan and then apply the new art over the top. That way it can always be restored.
I could, but I’d still have to then buy the Open Ice artwork twice. Once for the temp solution and then again whenever I land the right cabinet.
Sell it I would . I have a zookeeper, Mad Planets, Krull, Dk3,Qbert, mini Gorf and mini Robotron. Plus a Sinistar I'm working on 1multi and. Taito Game room classic
That’s exactly what is going to happen. The guy who is taking it is leaving it as is and may only swap in a Vegas board. It all worked out in the end.
That’s the way it’s going to play out. I know the buyer well and he will be keeping the cabinet as is with only a board swap in mind.
Get your money back! You'll always think about it when you play or look at it if you keep it.
Definitely leaning towards selling it. I already have someone lined up.
Wow. I never even knew about NHL Open Ice. Being a recent hockey fan with the Kraken, now I want to try this! Go to option 4. Don't sacrifice the original dream.
Yeah, I'm definitely leaning option 4 and getting my money back. The search continues.
Enjoy it how it is for a while and then clean it up and sell until you can find what you want.
Yeah, I’m pretty certain it’s getting moved sooner than later.
#4 all life long, mate. Get your money back, save the cab, go back searching… all hopefully leading to a new video with a proper Open Ice cab!
Don’t destroy- just keep looking- once you modify it’s another can that no longer exists and has become extinct
Exactly. It’s going to a good home where it won’t be ruined.
I am a HUGE NHL OPen Ice fan! way more than for NFL Blitz. But that being said, I personally would preserve the Blitz and return it back.
Yeah, I’m selling it as is to a friend who wants it just like this.
Tough one. I’d make it a MK3. But then you need some investment and a new CP. other option is to sell.
Yeah, definitely need a new CP if going that route. I wouldn’t mind an UMK3 cabinet though.
sell it at cost if you can. that cabinet is gorgeous.
That’s exactly what happened. My friend who helped load and haul this wants it. It’s all going to work out!
@@ScarletSprites my man!
Option 4 all the way. Get back in the hunt for that Open Ice cab.
Thanks man. For sure that’s what’s happening at this point. What’s really nice is that a friend is taking it who genuinely wants Blitz. I get rid of it at cost, the cabinet is saved, and someone else gets the game they want.
