Why Abdel Fattah el-Sissi is likely to remain president despite Egypt’s ailing economy | DW News

  • Egyptians headed to the polls on Sunday as voting began in a presidential election in which President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi faces no serious challenger.
That’s despite the country’s ongoing economic crisis, with around 30% of its 105 million population living in poverty, according to official figures.
Initially coming to power in the wake of a coup d'etat in 2013, el-Sissi is likely to end up ruling the northeast African country until 2030, after term limits were adjusted from four to six years by a constitutional amendment in 2019.
In a country that links northeast Africa with the Middle East, many Egyptians have concerns extending beyond their nation's borders.
Beginning Sunday, the three-day vote is being overshadowed by the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza, with a large focus on the conflict and Egypt's northeastern borders, as well as the suffering of Palestinians.
People watched el-Sissi's news conferences alongside foreign dignitaries as the war on Gaza took the spotlight away from domestic problems, including a lack of freedom of expression.
The vote comes as Israeli ground forces expand their operation in southern Gaza, ordering Palestinians to evacuate and head to the Mediterranean Coast or closer to the Egyptian border.

What I don't understand is most dictators want to stay in power and imprisoned the oppositions, and yet they still want to hold the election. What's the point of election if they want to grip on power?

He's their career Egyptian, military coup leader. He's a more professional Saddam, that does more to keep those groups out or in order a little more firmly. Like where they get shot, policing the territory into some level of general international order. I guess that's his trade-off perk, there. I guess some would prefer the Apes & Pigs guy, surely more so now.

Stop distorting Al Sisi's reputation, and stop spreading lies! Egypt was importing 80 per cent of their wheat from Ukraine. Thousands in UK lining up for food all over my country. Long lines waiting for food as they have nothing to eat. That is what I see often. The line was so long I could not believe it. Well, I don't see democracy anywhere these days sadly. Today a man was stopped for stealing a sandwich in co-op almost crying saying he's hungry. I left London for the day to go to Southend and as soon as I came out station a very long line of people waiting for food from a food bank.

Tantawi would never have had a chance and he failed to get the necessary endorsements from the public to run, and even if he did, he was a fringe figure without broad popular support. I am from Asia concerned about seeing Egyptian and jordan leaders, who are cowards, leaders who allow their neighbors to be persecuted, whether because of past trauma. but don't look like a coward. but perhaps that is a reflection of the people themselves.
