      @@m2hmghb Correct. And as far as Roosevelt, he was actually elected to his third term BEFORE our entry into WW2, interestingly enough. I'm at a loss to know what his argument was for breaking the custom of the self-imposed two term limit in 1940. (It was probably a more obvious argument in 1944.)

    The fact that President John F. Kennedy mentioned in an interview that he taught himself speed reading and was able to read up to 1,200 words per minute probably helped make the practice popular. Subsequent presidents also enrolled in speed reading courses over the next decades.

    The proposed amendment - now officially adopted as the Twenty-second Amendment - was ratified in 1951 after almost four full years of deliberation. Since the new amendment's ratification, all subsequent presidents have served for no longer than two elected terms. The only president in American history to serve more than two four-year terms was Franklin Delano Roosevelt. He actually served three full terms as well as the first three months of a fourth term until his death on April 12, 1945. So, that should answer your question. Quakers are a religious non-violent group that is more into equality for sexes and basically got into positions of power because they work hard to pass new legislation to stop various injustices from happening. They actually refuse to ever take up arms even in defense of themselves or their friends. Although the world wars really divided them as many young Quakers chose to go into the military as frontline soldiers. Many older Quakers were proud but others were appalled by the violence. The Quakers were fractured badly after the world wars and so many left the religion. The modern Quakers are a shadow of their former selves although the idea of change through hard work does ring true still with many still in some position of power though today they act more like historians than actual political figures.

    George H.W. Bush joined the Navy on his 18th birthday, enlisting in the Navy's flight training program fresh out of high school. He graduated flight training and was one of the youngest Navy pilots in the service at that time. First seeing action in May 1944 at the head of a three-man Avenger torpedo bomber, he was nearly one of the casualties in the battle of Midway when his plane was shot down by Japanese gunners while making a dangerous low level torpedo attack. He watched the battle raging overhead in a one man life raft. Later rescued he then flew 58 combat missions in the Pacific.

  • @nochannel1q2321
    @nochannel1q2321 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    JFK did read that speed. It's not hard to verify. You pull something of a specified number of words, place it in front of the person being tested, have them turn it over and start a timer for 60 seconds, then have them turn it back over and ask them questions about the content they read. Or have them read a set length short text of a specific length and time how long it takes them to read it and then rest them over content then divide to find the words read per minute. Also FDR was elected to four terms in office and the term limitation to two terms was set afterward.

After that, the law was enacted with a two-term limit. You were talking about Gerald Ford when you mentioned the president who was never elected. He had been vice president to Nixon, who resigned, and then Ford finished the term as president. He lost the next election to Carter.

    You can run for more than two terms, but you can't serve more than two terms. So, if--hypothetically--you win your first and last terms, then you could have run any number of losing terms in between them.
    *Edit:* It's very possible. I used to read 800 wpm with speed reading techniques, which are not just skimming, having started training with 250 wpm reading speed. I could read at 800 wpm, with 100% comprehension, and pass a quiz on what I read. To be fair, technical reading and reading on subjects you aren't familiar with either slows you down or you just don't understand some of the words or the ideas that are based on knowledge of those words. The biggest increase to reading speed comes from learning how to not subvocalize and how to read progressively larger chunks in a single glance.

    • @billdb8854
      @billdb8854 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Technically a person can serve 2 1/2 terms, If this person serves two years or less of the preceding President's term, they may serve for two more four-year terms.

    • @Real_LiamOBryan
      @Real_LiamOBryan ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@billdb8854 That's just because you are allowed to serve two full terms. Only being allowed to serve one term after a half term would mean that you are a special case that isn't allowed to serve two terms. Still, it's correct that you can serve 2.5 terms.

    • @bernardfarwell2814
      @bernardfarwell2814 ปีที่แล้ว

      1200wqords per minute....yet he (and you) use speed reading...uhm...Technically, that's not reading 1200 WPM. You're speed reading. That does not count as reading word for word. When I hear "words per minute", I'm thinking "Okay, word for word. Wow. Impressive", but then I hear "speed reading", okay, not impressed anymore, he's not technically reading word for word".
      So I say this...WPM doesn't officially count if you're speed reading. You're skipping whole sentences...that's not technically "reading", therefore he's probably reading 1 or two sentences per paragraph. Doesn't count. That's called CHEATING!
      You want impressive? Here's whats actually impressive. I can read WORD for WORD 700-900 words per minute....WITHOUT skipping any words! That means I can read a 250-450 page book in 24 hours or less. Average person reads 100 pages per day. That means I can read up to x5 times FASTER than the average Joe. Now THAT is impressive. Oh, and I can also (at the same time) pay what is going on in the book in myhead as if it weere a movie and STILL comprehend what is going on.
      As for reading technical books, that depends on the subject, and how interested I am in said subject.
      The difference in why some people can read as fast as I can all depends on comprehension and how quick that comprehension is. Myself, as an example, my fast reading ability though not as quick as it was in my late teens when I could read a normal novel in 24hrs, was very quick compared to the other kids in elementary & middle school. Even then, I had always wondered why the other kids could never keep pace with me in my ability in reading. But it all comes down to experience. Which tells you that the average Joe doesn't reading a cook everyday. Sad. Oh well.....
      So yeah...if you're saying you can read 900 words with speed reading...you're not. You're cheating. You're automaically disqualified from the competition of "Reading A Book Novel The Quickest Read; Word for Word" because you were caught cheating using speed reading after your speed reading and lose by default. The Appeals option is automatically Disabled against the Judges ruling as it is ruling based upon Technicality; using the "Literal" argument is also ignored by default as it is an Appeal based upon Semantics.

    • @Real_LiamOBryan
      @Real_LiamOBryan ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bernardfarwell2814 *"That does not count as reading word for word. When I hear "words per minute", I'm thinking "Okay, word for word. Wow. Impressive", but then I hear "speed reading", okay, not impressed anymore, he's not technically reading word for word"."*
      I'm sorry, you just don't know what you are talking about, then. I read every single word, understand it, and am able to do it faster. Speed reading is a collection of techniques for improving your normal reading speed, without skipping any words, at least legitimate kinds of speed reading. I already mentioned the two most important techniques, namely, eliminating subvocalization and chunking words. When chunking words, your eyes just take in more words in a single glance, it's not skipping words, so you just have to move your eyes less and process the information faster.
      *"So I say this...WPM doesn't officially count if you're speed reading."*
      I can say that the moon is made of cheese, but that doesn't make it true. Why would you want to say something that's not true?
      *"You're skipping whole sentences...that's not technically "reading", therefore he's probably reading 1 or two sentences per paragraph. Doesn't count. That's called CHEATING!"*
      No. No skipped sentences, not even skipped words, except, if you desire, you can skip certain sorts of words and still understand--even though I don't do that--such as prepositions.
      *"You want impressive? Here's whats actually impressive. I can read WORD for WORD 700-900 words per minute....WITHOUT skipping any words!"*
      Good! So, you speed read, or you just mentally process faster than average. You are probably just speed reading without knowing it, i.e., not subvocalizing and chunking.
      *"That means I can read a 250-450 page book in 24 hours or less. Average person reads 100 pages per day. That means I can read up to x5 times FASTER than the average Joe. Now THAT is impressive."*
      Same here, but it's more like 3-4 times for me. Cool brag, though, brother.
      *"As for reading technical books, that depends on the subject, and how interested I am in said subject."*
      No. No matter how interested you are in a subject, when you encounter words you don't understand yet, concepts you don't understand yet, and ideas that you have to stop and think about, you just simply cannot read them as fast, unless you aren't actively reading. I actively read. I think consider what I'm reading, while I'm reading it. Passive reading, sure. Anybody can just mentally or verbally regurgitate what's on the paper super fast, with some practice, but you can't get super fast at having meaningful reading with technical books. It will slow you down. Perhaps, by "interested", you mean that you have already learned all the tricky words and concepts, and whatnot, in a technical area. That's quite possible. I've grown to be able to read philosophy faster, for example, through tons of repetition. Still, it takes some time to make it through a new work actively.
      *"The difference in why some people can read as fast as I can all depends on comprehension and how quick that comprehension is. Myself, as an example, my fast reading ability though not as quick as it was in my late teens when I could read a normal novel in 24hrs, was very quick compared to the other kids in elementary & middle school."*
      Same. And, that is true, comprehension speed makes a big difference. That, however, is not the only way to increase your reading speed legitimately.
      *"So yeah...if you're saying you can read 900 words with speed reading...you're not. You're cheating."*
      Dead wrong. Tell me how I'm cheating! I read, and understand, every word, at least to the same degree that everyone else does (since people often think that they understand things that they don't, for example).

    I'm from Louisville, KY where Zachary Taylor lived before becoming president and where he is buried. He was in good health even for a 65 year old in 1850. That 4th of July, like so many before and since, was very hot and to combat the heat he drank a pitcher of iced milk and had a bowl of cherries and died 5 days later like the video said. The persistent poisoning rumors stemmed from the idea that southerners were upset he wanted to prevent the expansion of slavery to the west. In 1991 his body was exhumed to use modern science to determine once and for all if there was anything to those rumors. Kentucky's chief medical examiner determined that his death was due to any one of “a myriad of natural diseases which could have produced the symptoms of gastroenteritis.” so for at least as far as the official record goes, he was not poisoned.

    A few phun phacts: :-)
    Grover Cleveland ran three times. First time he won, second time he lost to Benjamin Harrison, third time he won against Harrison and got his job back.
    Also, the two term limit was only a tradition, until 1940 when FDR won a third term in 1940 and for a fourth in 1944. A while later, a constitutional amendment was ratified making the two term limit, law.
    One of you mentioned a president who wasn't elected, and you were 100% correct: Gerald Ford (the guy who they said was a model, lol) held the offices of Vice President, then President, without having been elected to either office.
    I must say it's nice to see people from other countries interested in US history, especially in the positive way you do. I think American presidents are usually pretty interesting. I'm glad to see you guys find them the same. Keep up the good work :-)

    There were no term limits for Presidents until after World War II. From George Washington forward until Franklin D Roosevelt, presidents served no more than two terms out of tradition and custom, not law. But FDR ran for President and was elected to four consecutive terms, he died early in his fourth term so he served a little over 12 years from 1932-44.
    He took the country thorugh the Great Depression and World War II. He is considered by many to be America's greatest President for this reason. And he is certianly in nearly everyone's top 3 or 4 Presidents usually behind Lincoln, Washington, and Jefferson--although I don't think Grant gets enough credit. After WWII, the Congress and the country passed a constitutional amendment limiting presidents to two terms (consecutive or not).
    The US is always concerned with politicians having too much power. But it should be noted, members of Congress and Senators are not term limited. They can run and be elected as many times as the voters want them and it is their job to provide oversight of the President. So as powerful as Presidents are, the Congress can still remove them thorguh impeachment and removal by both houses.
    The real power fo teh rpesidency is as commander in cheif of the military. S/he cannot decalre war, only yhr congress can do that, but they can use force to defend the country withou congressional approval and they can deploy troops during conflicts without congressional approval. Usually they seeka pporval anyway for political reasons and that keeps them from going to war on a whim. But no official war has been decalred in the US since WWII. All the other conflicts have been "police actions" or "authorizations to use force" which are not tin the constitution, but Congress seems comfortable enough with them to allow.

    You cannot run for more than 2 terms. Franklin Roosevelt was elected 4 times. After that, an Amendment was added that says no one may seve more than 2 terms or 10 years. So, lets take Gerald Ford for example. When Nixon resigned Ford had less than 2 years remaining in Nixon's term when he became President. He ran against Jimmy Carter and lost, but had he defeated Carter he could have served that term and still run for reelection. but if Nixon had resigned a few months earlier, Ford could only serve ONE full term because the time he took over plus 2 four year terms would have been more than ten years.
    This rule still applies to nonconsecutive terms. If Trump gets elected again in 2024 and serves out that full 8 year term, he will not be eligible to run a third time. If he lpses in 2024 he can try again in 2028 if he so chooses
    As for Zachary Taylor dieing from milk and cherries. Many people died from drinking milk due to all the bad stuff cows ate in the fields. Pasteurization had not been invented yet so Gail Borden of Connecticut, who had learned the process of making sweetened condensed milk, brought healthy milk to market, but Zachary Taylor died before it was available

    Until the passage of the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution, there was no limit on the number of terms that a President could run for or serve. The Twenty-Second Amendment was passed after Franklin D. Roosevelt won unpresedented 3rd and 4th terms - many believe he was won all 4 times primarily because we were in the middle of WWII during those elections and most people were unwilling to elect unseat the sitting President during a war. (We had 2 Presidents named Roosevelt, FDR (.32nd President) and Theodore Roosevelt, Jr. (Teddy Roosevelt - 26th President).
    Even after the passage of the 22nd Amendment, it is possible for a person to serve more than 2 terms - *IF* they are Vice President and are elevated to President because their President is unable to complete their term *AND* there are less than 2 years left in that term. As such, they can serve as President for that partial term (as long as it is less than 2 years), the run for President and be elected for two more (full) terms. The 22nd Amendment reads (in part), ""No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of President more than once. Jefferson being the father of Sally Hemings children is "accepted by historians", but the "proof" is not proof, just innuendo and guesses.
    Some of Hemings' children certainly have Jefferson DNA, but there are more likely suspects in the Jefferson line (Thomas' brother Randolph being the most likely, former slaves report that he "used to come out among black people, play the fiddle and dance half the night...").
    The Monticello home and grounds tour (owned and managed by the Thomas Jefferson Foundation) unfortunately does not allow for any doubt in their history that Thomas Jefferson fathered those children.

    One weird fact about Woodrow Wilson is that the only good thing that happened in his 8 years in office was something he was forced to do, which is one of the many reasons why I hate him. About John Tyler having a living grandson, it happened because he had Lyon Gardiner Tyler in 1853 when he was 63 and his wife was 33. Lyon Gardiner Tyler later had Harrison in 1928 when he was 75, and his wife was 39. Theodore Roosevelt ran for a third term because he was allowed to back then, and he hated how his successor William Howard Taft was so conservative.
