Oh PS - the guy who plays Riff Raff (the blonde "butler" type guy) is Richard O'Brien, the man who wrote the musical stage version, the screenplay for the film, and a lot of the music for them. Incredibly talented (and somewhat warped...in a good way) guy.

This movie came out in 1975, the year I graduated high school and began my University studies. I believe I first saw this in 1976 at a small independent little theater. Even then there was audience participation like throwing rice and toast. Maybe 10% of the audience wore costumes. And some brought liquor, or smoking herbs. It was a great movie and experience.

    Fun Fact:
Those iconic lips at the beginning belong to Patricia Quinn (Magenta), but that's not her voice. In the original stage version of Rocky Horror, the opening number was sung by the Usherette, a character that is traditionally played by the same actor who plays Magenta.
The vocals on ‘Science Fiction, Double Feature’ are in fact those of Rocky Horror creator…..Riff Raff himself, Richard O’Brien.
You must go to an actual performance of Rocky Horror…..it’s an experience that’s not to be missed!!!
In 2016, Curry played The Criminologist in the television film remake of The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

He was Darkness in Ridley Scott's Legend, Pennywise in the 1990 TV movie version of Stephen King's IT, and the voice of Captain Hook in the 90's Fox Kids animated series, Peter Pan and The Pirates. I was years behind most of my friends when I finally discovered RHPS. From what I'd heard, I thought the whole premise sounded really dumb, and I refused to watch it all the way through high school. Then when I was 19, I got dragged to a midnight showing by a group of friends, and I absolutely loved every minute of it. I haven't made it through a single year since without watching it at least once, and I'm quickly approaching my 43rd birthday.

Rocky Horror is very much a participatory experience. there's a local cast who mirror the screen action & the audience fills in any pauses in dialog or song lyrics with a series of ever-changing call-&-responses which can get pretty elaborate. a couple simple examples: whenever the narrator appears, shout out "wipe that ass off your chin"; whenever Brad asks for a phone, shout "castles don't have phones, asshole!". & the more dedicated among them bring along props to use & sometimes throw at the screen (subject to management approval) rice at the wedding, a newspaper to cover your head in the rain, some sort of light to turn on during There's a Light, you get the idea. it's a thing you need to experience at least once.

    • @Jessica_Roth
      @Jessica_Roth ปีที่แล้ว +7

All the Narrator got from the audiences I saw this with was "BORING!!" I literally never heard Charles Gray say a word.
      Best audience bit:
FRANK (seducing Brad): It's no crime to give yourself over to pleasure.
      AUDIENCE: It is in Massachusetts!
(As, back in 1980, homosexual intercourse *was* a criminal act ["sodomy"] in many states. Indeed, many states, including Georgia, still have sodomy laws on the books; they've just been unenforceable since the Supreme Court ruled those laws invalid in "Lawrence v. Texas" in 2003. In the anti-abortion decision last summer, Clarence Thomas indicated that the Court was open to overturning "Lawrence", so the "good old days" might be coming back…sigh.)

When I went to see it live (in the UK), every time anybody said "Brad Majors" everyone shouted "Asshole", every time they said "Janet Weiss" everyone shouted "Slut".
The other thing I remember is during the storm scene at the beginning, everyone shouted "Describe your plums!", following which the narrator lifted the front of his jacket and intoned "Dark, heavy, and pendulous".
One of the times I saw it, Jason Donovan was playing Frank (that was the 25th anniversary year), which I was concerned about prior to watching (as it's pretty far from the neighbours character and singer that was all I knew him from), but he was excellent in it.

We had "This man has no neck" for the narrator's appearance, then as one of the cast jumped up with arms together "fuck that chin, fuck that chin". I love how different locations and different times had different call outs.

You have the advantage of several decades of the awareness of the Rocky Horror Picture Show. I was a young airman in 1980, stationed in England, and had not yet seen or heard of RHPS. I was sitting in my room in the dorm one day, bored out of my mind. At the base theater, there was some “horror” movie playing. I wasn’t interested in that genre, but was so desperate for some diversion that I decided to go see it anyway. My innocent young mind was totally unprepared for what was to come.
When the screen lit up with those red lips singing about old science fiction movies, I thought “this is really a strange beginning for a horror movie”. Then when Brad and Janet started singing after the wedding, I thought “oh no, not a musical horror movie” I hated both genres. And it was CHEEZY! At their arrival at the castle I thought “ok, this is where it will start getting creepy”. The initial appearance of Riff Raff confirmed my suspicion. Then the music started again and I was, “wait, this is getting interesting”! With the Time Warp, I knew that this wasn’t going to be your average horror movie. I was filled with apprehension when I saw the elevator descending behind Brad and Janet. Frankenfurter then stepped out in his black robe. When he threw off his robe and revealed himself in a corset, garter belt, fishnet hose and high heels I was shocked! I was a young straight man and this made me very uneasy! But as I watched more I found myself curiously enjoying both the story and the music. After it was over I left the theater thinking “what the hell was that!” I didn’t know that, by that time, there was already a huge cult following of the movie. The base theater didn’t encourage audience participation, and with an audience of primarily military people, I don’t think many appreciated it.
I didn’t think about it for several years after that, but in 1989 I took my new wife and stepson for their first experience. They were instant cultists! I later made costumes of the Riff Raff and Magenta space suits for my wife and myself to attend showings.
Sadly, we divorced later, but now I have a different wife, and we have a different connection to the RHPS culture. We are both transgender women! “I’m just a sweet transvestite from Transexual Transylvania -a-a-a!”

You're right. It started out as a legit musical - "The Rocky Horror Show" in 1973 in London, and a cleaned-up version came to LA where Meatloaf joined the cast, playing the dual roles of Dr. Scott and Eddie. He supposedly got the job because he was the only one who could sing all the words in Hot Patootie. The film, "The Rocky Horror Picture Show," came out in 1975, but didn't fare well. It landed on the midnight movie circuit, including the Waverly Theater, here in NYC. It was there that the movie became a phenomenon when viewers began coming in costume as the characters, acting out the show, coming up with witty comebacks that fit into the movies many pregnant pauses ("What Meatloaf again?), and bringing props for key moments (water guns and newspaper for the rain scene, toilet paper when they shout "Great Scott!" and such). Soon word spread and the film became a classic.
The film also holds an important place in LBGTQ+ history as being a major milestone in brining gay culture to the mainstream, if not through the side door (note, I did not say backdoor). Many youth who couldn't express themselves fully came to RHPS and embraced the theme "don't dream it, be it."

Here's the scoop on Rocky Horror. They use to play the movie, and while it was playing a cast would act it out in front of the theater. The audience would dress up as their favorite characters. And the audience would do audience participation with the film. It was like mad movies. The audience knew every line in the movie, so they'd make jokes and punchlines out of the dialogue in the movie. The audience also referred to certain characters by derogatory names, for instance whenever the film referred to Janet the audience would say "slut", and every time it referred to Brad the audience would say "asshole". Some theaters use to allow the audience to do things like throw rice during the wedding scene at the beginning of the movie and squirt squirt guns during the raining scene, as well as throw hot dogs (frankenfurters) whenever Dr. Frankenfurters name was mentioned. Most theaters did not allow the audience to throw things though because of the mess. I used to play Dr. Frankenfurter in a local theater back in the late 80's. It was great!
It was like a silly fun cos play midnight picture show party at your local theater. And afterwards the cast and some audience would get together at Denny's.

3:25 - This song is a tribute to classic sci-fi movies. A lot of the lyrics are old movie titles. A few of them are The Day The Earth Stood Still, It Came From Outer Space, Tarantula, Trifid, Runes, and When Worlds Collide.
4:45 - Now would be a good time to mention that this film is considered the classic Midnight Movie. Theaters all over the country hold regular showings where enthusiastic fans will come in costume to enjoy the film together. There is even a tradition of calling out reactions to certain cues in the movie (for example, every time someone in the film says 'Damn it!' the audience calls out 'JANET!' or vice-versa). There's actually several different call-back scripts you can find online.
    4:47 - ...TO DEATH!
19:40 - This is Eddie. He's more of a plot device than a character. More importantly, this is Meatloaf, legendary rocker of the 70s and 80s. Some of his most famous songs are Two Out Of Three Ain't Bad and I Would Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That).
    27:09 - OH, YEAH!!!
38:58 - Looks like you watched the American version. This version cuts out almost the entire last song. If you can find the British version, the whole song is intact. Here's a link to the full ending: th-cam.com/video/yjc-I-parYs/w-d-xo.html

Interesting fact, Meatloaf said when came to the studio to shoot his scene for this film, he was actually pretty young, in his late teens, early twenties. He wandered onto the lot and the scene they were shooting at the time was the rest of the main cast up on the stage in stockings, and he wasn't sure what he'd gotten himself into.

    • @BobJenkins-ez1jl
      @BobJenkins-ez1jl 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Wrong, he was in the stage play in los Angeles before the movie and it was there that during rehearsal that he was suddenly upset about what he had gotten himself into. He has spoken about this numerous times. He was in the Roxy cast in 1974 when Tim Curry and the play came over from England. Obviously he got over his misgivings because he then did the movie and then the short Broadway run .

LATE COMMENT: This is the guiltiest of guilty pleasures. It's a movie you need to watch about 10 times to catch all the little elements that make it so great. In the opening the lips were Pat Quinn's (Magenta, the Domestic) but the voice was Richard O'Brien's (Riff Raff), and it does help to know the old science fiction movies of the 30's - 70's. It is a real bummer that so much of the music due to copyright rules.

My introduction to this movie was in the mid '80s during my university years. Annually, around Halloween time, the local cinema would have midnight showings featuring "full audience participation". People would dress as their favorite characters and line up around the block hours in advance. The cinema also sold "goodie bags" with all of the typical "participation props" (i.e. rice, newspaper, squirt gun, hot dog, etc.) I became such a fan that I bought a book on the history of the stage play and how it was made into the movie. The book also contained many of the standard audience participation lines. My DVD copy of the movie has the option to play with or without audience participation banter.

Back in '87, one little 2 screen theater in the next town over played Rocky Horror every Friday and Saturday night at midnight for the entire summer, and my brother, a friend and I attended almost every showing. That was a great summer. On the flip side, the one time a theater showed it in our town, it was a disaster, the normals didn't get it, some idiot actually lit a roll of toilet paper on fire and threw it, and the whole thing was stopped. During the wedding scene, where the audience brings rice to throw, somebody brought a 50 lb bag of rice, threw some of it, then threw the whole bag across the theater. Some people just can't have nice things.

    • @loupgarou-dj3tm
      @loupgarou-dj3tm ปีที่แล้ว +1

Our local theater showed it once and didn't know what to expect, and a beer bottle went through the screen. A group of us went to a different normal theater one time, and we actually had the rest of the audience on our side within minutes. They all started yelling at the ushers when they tried to throw us out. Fun times.
Pro tip: If you're gonna throw a roll of toilet paper, unroll a bunch of it on your leg, set the roll on top, and throw the whole thing. It makes a long streamer, where just throwing the roll while holding the end doesn't work, it just snaps off.

Hi there! So, you should do a little research on this movie, it's very interesting. It began as a play in London. The guy who plays Riff Raff, Richard O'Brien, wrote it. When they were performing, Tim Curry was the original Dr. Frankenfurter and O'Brien played Riff Raff and Magenta and Columbia were also played by the same performers as in the movie. The play was so successful it went to film. When RHPS played in theaters, the audience began shouting out snarky comments and reactions to scenes in the movie, throwing toast when at the dinner table someone says "A toast!" or using newspaper over your head when Janet uses a newspaper to cover her head in the rain, they'd throw rice when the wedding guests threw rice at the married couple, things like that. But unless you've seen it a hundred times, this new generation won't quite understand that part, well, the commenting part. Sometimes the jokes were in bad taste, some were funny. "Hey Riff Raff, show us your mother!" just before Riff Raff opens the coffin when Janet and Brad first arrive at the castle.
Fun Fact: Richard O'Brien (Riff Raff) is the voice of Phineas and Ferb's dad, Lawrence Fletcher.

Someone may have already mentioned this but you have to find a midnight showing of this somewhere. There is audience participation where the audience, in unison, talks back to the movie. There are also things you have to bring. Rice - a newspaper - a water gun - toast and maybe a couple of other things. Not kidding. Sometimes people dress as the characters and act out the movie while it plays.

I saw the stage play in 73 with the original cast just after it had transferred to the Kings Road London in an old building awaiting demolition. Cheap and cheerful production with a torch as the light, tin tray as the thunder, but the live music was amazing. The 'audience' in the movie replicated the play where the action from that scene took place around us. Pretty much a Fringe production that I don't think any of us who saw it and loved it expected it to be still going strong 50 years later.

Something I found fascinating about Tim Curry years after being introduced to him in movies like Annie, Home Alone 2, Rocky Horror, Clue & Ferngully (& the show The Wild Thornberrys) was that he lied on his resume about his acting history/experience. Just think, if he hadn't, we never would've had those great characters (at least as we know them).
And yeah, that guy was Meat Loaf (RIP) as Eddie, Columbia's love interest (in the credits, she's referred to as "A Groupie.") And the dancers in that scene, the kinda creepy one with her thick, crimped hair in her face, was one of Richard O'Brien's ex-wives (Kimi Wong); they married in 1972 & performed together under the moniker of Kimi & Ritz, so yeah, he automatically thought of her when they needed dancers for the Time Warp bit.
Oh, honey, I know you'd never seen this before but, I'm staggered at how much you missed; yes, they were eating Eddie (hence why Frank said that discussing him was a "tender" subject & why Magenta smirked); yes, they're aliens; no, they're not his children, but they are siblings; they're from the planet Transsexual in the universe (or maybe galaxy) of Transylvania; yes, they were turned into statues. I had to eye roll at parts of your reaction, but I still loved it. Welcome to the Rocky Horror Family, Angel!

I have since seen it more than 100 times and still get a kick out of it only now I watch it with my kid and we sing all the songs to it. Watching reactions to the movies I grew up with by the younger generation is so funny-then I think of how I react to movies my parents grew up with-just as funny. If you liked this, I would venture to bet you would love a public viewing even more, but it's very VERY interactive, so if you do go, you might want to research and prepare. Every production is a little different and might have different rules. It's a special tradition when presenting a public viewing that there also be a live re-enactment in sync with the movie and one of the most important characters is you. So welcome, as a former TRHPS virgin myself, I can say your first time will be something to remember. See this in a theatre with a bunch of fans. Really, the only way. Hard to believe that I've been dancing and singing along to this film for almost fifty years. Such a rich experience. So go see it with others in a theatre.

I think everyone has the same response to Tim Curry in this film.. "I knew he was good, but.."🤯😂❤️ Can we just remember the same guy brought us Pennywise the clown!? That man!!❤❤❤😂

OK, so yeah for something you might not have noticed. When the movie cuts to the narrator there is a projected image of the church Brad and Janet were at that has Tim Curry circled and an arrow pointing at him.

A quirky movie Tim Curry is in, playing a character named Darkness, is Legend. Released in 1985, it stars a young Tom Cruise. It is a movie that not a lot have seen, but one that I quite enjoyed.

Richard O'Brien, who plays Riff-Raff, is the one who wrote the script for the original musical.

Really enjoyed that, glad you enjoyed it too, one of the best movies ever. I'm sure you have caught up on a lot of the background since. I used to enjoy our local cinema's monthly Saturday midnight showing, this was in Edinburgh in Scotland around 1984/85, we used to go in full costume (I made a good Riff-Raff if I do say so) and we would go in with a bag full of props, newspaper, water pistols, rice, toast, all to be used at the appropriate moments (eventually they banned the props because of the mess) and we all used to run up onto the stage in front of the screen to do the Time Warp... I've seen this film hundreds of times.

I have loved Tim Curry since I was around 7......so like 1983/1984? He's always been one of my favorites since I saw him in Clue the movie.

It’s pretty accurate to the original stage play. The play opens with “Science Fiction Double Feature” sung by an usherette (this part is doubled with Magenta). Eddie and Dr Scott are also played by the same actor. Meatloaf was apparently disappointed that he was only to play Eddie in the film. Other differences are that Sweet Transvestite and Time Warp are in reverse order in the play; and Brad has his own song (“Once in a While”) when he has done the dirty with Frank. This was removed from the film for pacing reasons in the final edit. It can be found on this platform in pretty crap quality, if you want to check it out.

It was a London fringe play, written by Richard O'Brien (aka Riff-Raff.) The women who came to watch was surprised how attracted they were to Frankenfurter (Tim Curry.) So no surprise there. It's now a cultural phenonema, the audiences dressing up as cast characters. I'm quite dull, so I dressed up as Brad.
Edit: If you want to watch an even more famous fringe movie, then the only option is "Phantom of the Paradise." You can also visit the castle, now a hotel. Stay there overnight.

    "Hot Patootie bless my soul,
I really love that rock & roll..."
And yes, he (he being Eddie) was in a ice/freezer room - Incredibly though, he wasn't dead...
Incredibly because the reason he was in the freezer-thing, is that Frankenfurter (presumably after drugging him unconcious) took half his brain to put into Rocky to bring him to life.
Don't remember what else you asked... I've been writing this message for about an hour, an hour and a half; I'm half asleep and keep nodding off only to startle awake when my chin hits my chest or I lean too far to one side...
Eh, got sidetracked again; Both in forgetting to write (or think for that matter) because of fatigue (/exhaustion) and in going on a tangent when I was writing.
Anyway, I hope that helped answer at least some of your questions & confusion.
    Gx

Omg! Love love love Tim Curry! And this is were my love affair started with him! I was 16 yrs old and to young to go (rated R), my brother snuck me in and my parents were so anger with my brother but not me. 😅 I went to this movie at least 50 times. The midnight show was so fun. People dressed like the characters, the physical props that were thrown and the whole audience singing every word! Best experience still to this day! I’m 61 now and absolutely loved this reaction! Glad you liked it! 😍🥰
