  • Do you believe that if the Weimar Republic survived, which also means that Germany doesn’t become ultranationalist and expansionist power, that the Second World War would be prevented?
    I want to explore this question, but also give you a realistic answer on how the Weimar Republic could have survived and thrived in the 1930s and 40s.

    I think you really underestimated the threat of a communist takeover of Germany. Communist and Ultranationalists were literally fighting in the streets. Perhaps the SPD would control that, but the Communist threat was one of the main causes of the Ultranationalists both gaining support and taking power.

    • @rewriting-history
      @rewriting-history  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +85

      I don't think I underestimated the German communists. They at most got 10% of the votes, and since no party was willing to work with them, they would need to get 50% majority to form a government.
      Them starting a civil war is possible, but I don't think they will win.

      That's due to right wing propaganda. The communist were never even close to actually achieving anything in Germany. The fear of the communists was simply overexaggerated to obscurity so that the SPD could justify working with the former army (Ebert-Gröner Pakt).
      I can recommend you the "fight for the Republic" podcast. It is bias towards the left but still historically accurate.

      I don't think there would be much to rally for with the average person in the USSR. Barbarossa did many things for the USSR, mostly negative, and one of the few positives was embolden the totalitarian regime with a population fueled by fear of the outside through broad pluralistic nationalism. Without WW2, support for the regime quickly fissles up after the death of Stalin, to which Stalin would be less popular because there is no great achievement past the maintenance of the soviet system. I am going by drawing extrapolations from Stephen Kotkin.

    I think the political situation in the Weimar republic had been very complicated and are often hard to comprehened for us today. The parliament had been hard to govern because there had been no restrictions by size for parties to join. The only big blocks had been the SPD and the center party which had been its foundation in catholicism. It had been Hitler's charism which united the splitted right and got the industrial money to finance him. So he need to go to have a chance with your scenario.
    A successful coalition of center and socialists which would reach the mid 30s and needed a reform of the parliament to reduce the parties. With the Italian occupation of Abyssinia there might be the time of cooperation with France and UK which might result in a limited rearmament of army and navy and reintegration of Rhineland, Saarland and danzig into the Weimar republic for support against Italy. That would bring some conservatives and nationalists back into the fold.
    Without Italian and German support the Franco upraising would undoubtly fail but it might lead to a conservative and maybe monarchist government in Spain.
    And Italy's political isolation would lead to an end of the fashist rule maybe ba a conservative-catholic royal dictatorship like Yougoslavia.
    Austria would be stay independent because it would have the growing German tourismn as income source.
    A growing German economy would dominate Europe with a strong business relationship to many middle and eastern states in Europe via their German populations.
    The greatest instability for peace would be again the Balcans where Yougoslavia would implode with great probability.

    The Soviets falling in 1960s and the Japanese somehow winning the war against China are completely impossible.
    For the Soviets, the war completely damaged their economy and population until these days. Thanks to the war, the Soviets needed 7-9 more years to surpass the economy and industrial power that they had at the beginning of 1941. For the population, it was even worse. Only after 1954, they could surpass the population that they had in 1941, 13 whole years! That is crazy! So, they would have been more powerful, but less influential in this timeline.
    For the Japanese, the oil embargo made by the US would have crippled the war effort. Also, the USSR would have helped the chinese as Germany never attacked them in this scenario. So the Chinese wouldn't have surrendered that easily without fighting back. I even think that the Soviets would have gotten involved at some point.

    You end the video on an interesting note: The idea of the Germans leading the way into space.
    Considering how enamored of space German figures who came to the US were, like Oberth and von Braun, having them and their colleagues giving the Weimar Republic a "feel good" big project that they can stir up a love for could lead to some interesting outcomes.
    Say, they get Deutchland to the Moon by, oh 1960. With continued interest by and the promise of greater things to come for the Germans, some of the rocket folks' more ambitious plans may come to fruition: orbital bases around the time of the moon landing in 1960, first trips to Mars by 1975, asteroid mining by 1990, planting the flag on Io and Europa by 2010... We're talking some impressive gains that affects not just the map here, but our understanding of the solar system and beyond.

    Italy would for sure need to strike out and establish their own alliance bloc if they'd want to contest the Anglo-French-German trio but I'm not sure if they could get enough substantial local allies to create an even fight. Horthy's Hungary and Boris III's Bulgaria would likely at least consider an offer from the Italians, the Croatian rebels within Yugoslavia can still be co-opted to Italy's benefit, and Franco's Spain would be sympathetic even in the likely case of them remaining officially neutral, but there's no way this petty ragtag band of revanchists and nationalists could overturn the disadvantage Italy faces.

    Without WW2 there wouldn't have been a reason or a fiscal excuse for such incredibly expensive projects as the atomic bomb, or even the V2. It's almost certain, that weapons would remain much less developed than in our timeline. The Red Army however underwent an unprecedented growth and rearming in the late 1930s. The totalitarian regime had an ideological justification for its aggressive and expensive intentions with disregard forhuman and financial costs. The USSR could have conquered some countries in case of appeasement and bring itself at the age of a world War.

      True but the USSR would have probably suffered similar problems as the Axis in real-life if they attacked the "Locarno Treaties" countries UK, France and Germany.
      a) Sooner or later the supplyment routes would have become too long.
      b) France, Britain and the US might have helped the Germans out; in fact they would be even more likely to support a democratic Germany rather than having a communist Soviet Union reach the Rhine bank.

    Hey, i have a idea.
    What if Germany never helped Italy against Greece?
    I even have a few (although a bit unrealistic) ideas of how it could happen.
    1.Italy loses against Ethiopia, so when Greece starts to enter Albania, Hitler loses all hope for Mussolini and see's him as useless.
    2.Germany starts their battle against the Soviet Union way earlier, so they don't have time for Greece.
    3.Hitler never gets power, and Germany dosen't become nationalist. So there is no Germany to help Greece.

      *help against greece

    • @idk-cj8mn
      @idk-cj8mn 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      For the first point you'd have to explain how Italy could have lost to Ethiopia, cause it was literally impossible, unless the allies joined in the war other than just sanctioning Italy, but that's so unlikely it's almost impossible too.
      And even if Germany didn't help against Greece, all Italy needed to do was holding on for a little while, the Greek economy was collapsing and the Greeks didn't have any more troops, they were using all they had, Italy was using only a small part of their entire army.
      The Italian royal army was busy in multiple fronts against the British, all it would have taken was to take a few troops from there and relocate them in Greece for a quick victory, but that would have meant a slightly worse performance in northern Africa, that would have also meant no occupation of the balkans and a Greece fully under italian occupation until the end of the war, so Athens wouldn't be under German infulence.

    • @Bluestone775
      @Bluestone775 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@idk-cj8mn Fair points. As for them losing Ethiopia, the only sensible way i could see it happening is if either
      1.The allies are EXTRA HARSH on Italy that they join in on the war so fascism is weaker.
      2.Ethiopia promises them land if they help them against Italy.
      Also, when i said:"What if Germany never helped Italy agaisnt Greece" i never said Greece would win. I more so just wanna know what the countries other reactions would be to Italy losing heavily against Greece, after them needing gas to take Ethiopia and their not very good invasion of Egypt.
      In the end, i'm sure Italy would win with their full army, and maybe with the help of Bulgaria.

    • @idk-cj8mn
      @idk-cj8mn 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@Bluestone775
      Yeah, these are all fair points.
      For Italy to lose against the Greeks they would need more than just the British sending troops like they did irl, maybe Yugoslavia could help them seeing the Greeks pushing into Albania.
      Bulgaria was kinda forced by Germany to help if i remember correctly so i don't think they'd send troops.
      Italy also only used gas on Ethiopia to speed things up, it wasn't really needed, but yes, the invasion of Egypt was kinda a disaster, that's what happens when you rush stuff instead of waiting for supplies ig lol.

    • @Bluestone775
      @Bluestone775 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@idk-cj8mn yeah, i do think Yugoslavia would help against Italy, but i think that would most likely bring Germany into the war if we don't follow the scenario where Germany becomes Ultra-Nationalist because Yugoslavia would be a pretty large threat. With it being appeasement this time around, there would be no Soviet-Estonian Mutual Assistance Treaty? And no Winter War? Weimar Republik did survive. The official state name of Germany since 1871 was German Reich. This remained so in 1918/19. Weimar was the city in which the new republican constitution was drafted, hence the nickname Weimar Republic. All laws that followed were still under this Weimar republican constitution. Germany didn’t become a monarchy again, when Hitler was elected Chancellor and a year later also assumed the presidency of the republic. The Allies suspended this Weimar constitution in 1945 and installed various other provisional basic laws, under which the land of still existing de jure Weimar Republic exists, now are de facto law.
