Hey umu, I was curious as to why you made everyone react to the trailer version of the song and not the full version in the album. There are quite some portions cut off for the sake of being a trailer so I simply wondered if they could've listened to the whole song, the production, the entire lyrics and stuff. But nevertheless I'm happy we could even get this reaction. Thank you and appreciate the effort 💜💜

"This is very vulnerable work" was a line well said. What really makes suga one of my favourite rappers in the group is because in every song I immediately just relate to his lyrics, his flow, the way he changes up and experiment with the type of sounds he makes and his cool yet passionate voice. It's just something so unique to him and he has such awareness how to really connect people to his thoughts.
I'm not even a big fan of rap, but Suga changed that for me. It made me see a different color of rap than what I was used to hearing.

lmao...just say he is your favorite, instead of trying to avoid it weirdly, the group have only 3 rappers, saying he is one of your fav rappers, you make it sound like you only like 2 of them.
also hope you explored his and the other guys rap recs over the years (like Kendrick's stuff, for example, who even was mentioned in this reaction) and discovered there's more to rap than what media and radio pushed you to believe it is all about.
@@404gram I do like a lot of jhopes rap because I can always bop to it, I like rm's lyrics and a lot of his solo songs have this cool chill vibe. There are some english rappers that I like as well but I like just few songs of theirs or just that one popular song of theirs. Which is why I phrased it that way since I genuinely enjoy listening to all 3 of their content (solos and group) and they each have been my favourite at different times or moods but I keep going back to suga's songs like seesaw (which I will never stop liking no matter how many times I play it on loop). It's not always clear for me and I keep changing my mind because rap is just not something I listen to a whole lot or really search for.

The guy who is talking on the last part, he is the only person that I've saw who said that "now I know why BTS is big" and he's talking about the lyrics/concept or theme of the song and not because it's a BOP thing. Their whole Map of the Soul Album is referencing Karl Jung's theory of the Map of the Soul. Through their songs, BTS also wants to tell us that If we donot understand and accept the darker aspects of ourselves, then the self we love is not our true self, but rather an idealised version.
Exactly, they didn't get that at the end with the line you are me and me are you and we will always be together, is him accepting his shadow aka his fears that came in the context that he is living right now which is the fame and the stress of the pressure and to not feel like u can relate with other people ( since they are too famous and their schedules are tight ). Before it wasn't a big deal since they weren't that big so they can still relate with other friends that do the same. But now it's petty hard. Other example is my time from jk that talk about it in his own way ofc. And how he accept it at the end of the song too.

Adding on to what Ju Young said, she mentioned that in BTS' old songs they had the verse "I want big cars, big house, big rings." And in the full version of the song, the one on Spotify and Apple Music, etc, Suga actually references that line!
Idk if I agreed with that specific reference as them rapping about materialistic things because of what the song itself is about and the rest Suga's verse is criticising the materialistic need. If I Rule the World is a good example. It was one of their fun songs.
@@livelovelife32 He's said the 'big cars big house big ring' thing SEVERAL times in several different songs, both in their more light-hearted songs and more serious/honest ways where it was clear that's what he strived for. He's referenced the line several times in the past few years to question/put into perspective those desires and how warped they became as he grew more famous and how those things no longer mattered once he had it.
@@dekuwashi but even in no more dream those lines weren't driven just by pure materialism like yeah that was part of it but also the whole song is about how young people/their generation dont have dreams; their elders/teachers/parents tell them to study study study and tell young people to become office workers and to strive for that, calling elders liars; bts sing how their peers need to be freed from those expectations and burdens placed by others and just follow your own path, criticising the system, teachers, parents, relatives etc.
And when yoongi was a teen/young adult i would say he was driven to work as hard as he did, sacrifice as much as he did so he could "get these material things" as said in songs from his self titled album Agust D, D-2, some bts tracks and interviews over the years etc but it wasn't from genuine place of greed or him thinking he was better than anyone so ofc he deserves to have xyz😤 (tha last bit is sarcasm but im never sure if its conveyed through text lol) but it was his desire to improve his situation, to help his family financially, to have stable income and career in music so he doesn't have to decide between eating or walking home instead of catching the bus. It was also his unacceptance of how the world is, as said in a few songs from Agust D album he had to share a tiny a$$ room and apartment with 10 people but some classmates from when he was already in Seoul got imported brand new cars upon graduation by their parents meanwhile he is breaking his back working part time jobs and trainig for at the time a possible future debut. All of that was him seeing how the world isnt the same playing field for everyone and some get dealt better cards than others.
And yeah the lines i wanna big cars, big house and big rings have been referenced many times not only in group music by yoongi but also in his solo, expanding on his thoughts over the years, going in a different direction with the lyirics. And thats one fun thing the tannies love to do but ive noticed yoongi does it even more is to reference their own words/give this subtle shout outs to some of their other songs with some lyrics and phrases.

I have friends that are psychology majors, the only songs in BTS that they listened to are the Persona, Shadow and Ego. And they would always message me that they did such a good job turning into music Carl Jung's work.

Fun fact: in this song, Suga reversed a sample from their 2013 song Intro: ORUl82 from their first mini album. It goes with the other 2 rapline songs in this album where RM sampled Intro Skool Luv Affair from their second mini album for his MOTS song Intro Persona, Jhope sampled Intro: 2 Cool 4 Skool from their debut album in his MOTS sing Outro Ego. They did this because mots7, in addition to exploring Carl jung's work, BTS also wanted this album to be a reflection on their past 7 years as a group

Yep, he’s always made a commentary (even in Shadow with his “i wanna be...”) about how he fears that his ambition will become greed that keeps wanting more and more
It’s incredibly crazy to me how he’s maintained the balance (from a mental health perspective) of pursuing your biggest dreams while keeping that ambition in check for fear of becoming a monster (like he said in “The Last”)

I can't imagine what they've gone through. Jin once said that he lose some of his friends and performing was the only thing keeps him going and after the concert, they're alone in their hotel rooms feeling empty.

That's also one of the reasons of their "burnout" last 2018 where they almost disbanded. I remember that kind of feeling really took a toll on Jimin's mental health. It was shown in their concert documentaries. Glad they overcome it.
About 2018.. At first I thought it was about being burnout and all. But in BV 3, Jimin had a drink with RM (The night with the fireworks) he talked about them having a hard time in early 2018 because they couldn't have concerts and see army.
I was really confused at the moment, because I thought they were extremely worn out and that's why they were having a hard time.
Now, with pandemic and listening to the boys talking about wanting to perform because it gives them purpose, I realized that performing on stage really is the main drive and support for their mental life, EVEN if physically draining.
What am I trying to say....I guess I'm happy that "flying high/being up there" is no longer lonely nor terrifying for them.

They got it! They all connected personally with some facet of the song, and I think that was the point. We all (in different ways) connect with Suga and with the shadow aspect in ourselves, and can understand Suga's POV.

i really loved how all of them delved deeper into the meaning of the song, not only sonically, but also lyrically and visually. that was a great breakdown by Jason on the references to Jungian psychology. absolutely loved the reaction!
i’ve always interpreted the beginning of shadow (“i wanna be a rap star” etc) as this simplistic but deep ambition almost child like and stubborn. and the fact that he uses english to say all these simple sentences also emphasizes this kinda mantra about ambition. sometimes yoongi’s use of english is deliberate and so smart in the way he places it on the song. can only thinking about how he uses english in ‘people’ and ‘blueberry eyes’ as an example of this

The opening words "I wanna be a rockstar," etc. is from their first song No More Dreams. These words deeply reference their growth and experience as artists and from puberty to young men, from worldly illusion to reaity.

Jason's analysis of the Shadow concept was just so amazing to see
the psychology behind this song is astonishing. the references to isolation and the difference in personality is so well done. that shift in the song really put the cherry on top and how he put it “desire”. it’s the reality between his shadow and his on stage persona that becomes blurred and he was so spot on with explaining the meaning.

That's what I get from this song.....

I'd just like to say that the part where he says "I wanna be a rockstar, I wanna be the top..." is a reference to their first song in which his verse began with "I want a big house, big cars and big rings" It's supposed to represent who he was in 2013 debuting with BTS a group from a small company and the rest of the song shows who he is as a person today, a member of BTS, one of the biggest groups in the world.

This is why Suga is my ultimate bias. He explores a part of himself and fame that I seldom see in Kpop. It is so deep and vulnerable that literally all of it makes me so emotional.
One of the best reactions! Kevin and Jason really nailed it with their comments and observations. It's great that they brought their knowledge of music, film and psychology to the table. This is kind of why I started watching ReacttotheK's videos back when it was first established and also why I'm staying til this day. I always learn so much from the casts' reactions in every video.

Now, I'm a bit sad when people take the lyrics of No More Dream literally. Just read the next lyrics :
"I want a big house, big cars and big rings,
But actually, I don't have any big dreams".
In my opinion, the song is about how young people don't have actual dreams, they just want the things everyone want and tell them to want. I think Bangtan were mocking this materialism and conformism from the beggining.

The guy in red really missed the point of the song. The “I wanna be a rockstar” is not bragging or a flex..totally missed the point. The guy in blue at the end understood the song perfectly.

Well this was a surprise
I would love for Jason and Raffi to analyze Suga's mixtape D2. They are very very smart and sensitive . The way Suga shows his vulnerability is to highlight."lyrics and poeticism" That is why Suga is my fav rapper. 🖤🖤
The "I wanna be a rockstar.." part is amazing cause the basic wording makes it sound like a mantra he said to himself when he wanted to achieve something, but now that he has it and still craves for the same, the mantra has transformed into an inner voice that haunts him.
Because Jason was already fully aware of Jung and his work, I find that he was prepared for what Shadow was expressing while he listened and watched. He was completely tapped in and his breakdown of the song and video was a masterclass. I’m curious as to how Jason is so familiar with Jung.
It was nice to see so many of the reactors speak about how the song relates to them being musicians as well. Not just a breakdown of the music but the lyrics as well.
I know for a fact that girl’s gonna have an existential crisis when she hears Felix’s voice for the first time if Suga took her aback so much xD

He is accepting his shadow inner self as well as the famous self and is at peace with himself in the last scene when he is among the crowd as opposed to earlier. there were these words that were something like "no one told me how lonely it was on the top." and i swear, my heart shattered when i heard it. people always glorify about reaching the top, when you're popular and well-loved to the public, but honestly? we never really hear the stories of the dark parts of reaching fame and glory, where everyone is watching, prying and constantly criticizing.

It is so nice to see classical musicians react to this song. I find myself analyzing the musicality of it every other week and never have anyone to talk to about it. And most reactors don't pay attention to the things classical musicians do.

Kevin completely understood what Yoongi was trying to convey in his song especially when he said how in the 1st part it sounded intentionally egotistical. It was interesting listening to the guys' take on the mv, there's sm going on and they all added their own theories to it. Overall I enjoyed it ^^ it would be interesting if you could make them listen to their mixtapes as well

I'd really like to know if I'm the only person in the world who thinks this and Interstellar's main theme are so similar? Interstellar is one of my all time favorite movie sound tracks (I mean, not just favorite I'm actually obsessed with it lmao) and my mind went there the very exact moment i clicked on play button when Shadow dropped and I was SOOOO excited and happy waiting for people to mention it but I've never seen anyone mention it and it makes me feel lonely lol

Okay the last guy I think his name was Jason was so on point w his analysis, suga always puts sm thought and dept behind everything he does, and if you listen to suga’s other works you can clearly see that he doesn’t sugarcoat it. He talks about his struggles as much as of his achievements but he doesn’t flex.
He worked so fucking hard for everything he got and he still gets hate for people who don’t even have a name, he puts sm into his music and archived sm, their debut track has a line "I want a big house, big car and big rings" in one of his solo tracks he reused that line, "I have a big house, big car and big rings" he talks about how he achieved everything he wanted, but in the end he questions what comes next?
He has everything he has, he is a star, a rockstar, he is rich, he has everything he wanted but why doesn’t he feel so happy on the top, that reflected here.
I didn’t like how that one guy said he could have said it differently or he doesn’t like that part, it could be his personal taste but this line is so important for the track. Suga wanted to be fame, he wanted to be big, bc he doesn’t knew what’s all behind that, he didn’t knew about the shadow and misery it comes with it. Being and idol is so romanticised or being famous bc no one ever talks about the shadow of all.
He never knew how bad it can gets, he was afraid of going higher he didn’t wanted to fly higher, in case he looses himself and everything changes the person he is, he was afraid of the shadow in himself.
The 2nd time yoongi brings the line "I want to be a rockstar etc" it’s sm softer, nearly like a whisper, I think it’s bc he isn’t sure about it anymore. He is confused if he still wants that all, being at the top he questioned himself if he should continue, he didn’t know if he wanted to become bigger, he struggled with the imagine of himself and the struggles of the past and upcoming future.
"Yeah I'm you, you are me, now do you know" as everyone could have thought that’s his shadow, the different persona he has, the shadow talks to him, tries to make him understand that they are one and suga can’t fight against him, there are times where his shadow will go away but also will come back, he tries to explain he can’t be afraid of his shadow bc that’s him, he is his own shadow but light.
The track then ends with the sentiment that everyone feels this way and that this feeling is unavoidable, ultimately leaving a sense of acceptance.
He has to accept that his shadow will never fade, and is a part of himself.
I just wanted to thank Jason that he said "now I know why BTS is big" the simply looked at the lyricsm, depth behind it, the Meaning and understood how well done and deep this all is, thank you guys for supporting them❤️

I love everyone's reaction. I also love how in depth and aware they are with the overall concept of this song! "Interlude: Shadow" is one of my favorite BTS songs because of how lyrically deep it is. You can really feel the emotion and pain in Yoongi's voice. The lyrics, MV, their reactions, and everything else come together so well. Everyone reacting is so insightful.
Dont forget that Yoongi had social phobia. So it is a really deep song

Honestly, this and Black Swan embodied the concept of MOTS. The other songs in the album (although still really, really good like my personal fave, Louder than Bombs and Ugh) did have some throw away lines but didn't really fully reach the full potential of the concept. And there were songs that also didn't fit the concept at all.
Also: I miss Kendrick Lamar.

Jason really understands Carl Jung! I've always said the best thing about being a BTS fan is they get their fans to read different genres' of books. I grew up reading fantasy but BTS has me reading philosophy anthropology. They have me diving in to all kinds of literature. "Those who walk away from Omelas." Always telling us what they are reading and giving us suggestions. They also do the same with movies & music. I probably never would have watched Snow Piercer, if not for BTS. They are people who make you want to get outside of your comfort zone. Telling us, we don't have to be perfect but not to be afraid of new things, to be strong during this time of covid.
