Modding Guide: Inline SATA Connectors

  • I made this guide to answer what is probably my most asked modding related question: "What are those connector things you used for your hard drives?" I then go on to do a quick little demo to thwart any possible confusion. I may do more of these modding guides if there's an interest so be sure to comment with anything else you would like to see.

Considering this is now a 10 year old video, the information in it is still amazingly useful, and you make the whole process appear very straightforward. Thanks for this!

Exactly! Even almost 12 years later! I'm building a machine that needs a single SATA power connector for the AIO and after watching this I realized I can use old cables to do what I need and not let a bunch of connectors hanging around.

Agreed ... there's newer videos on the subject, but this young man did excellent work with the camera shots, nice clear close ups of what's going on. Also no blah blah blah filler to fit the video into a Google algorithm length sweet-spot.

I have eight(8) 8tb ssds in a mounting bracket i got off etsy that spaces each of them only 7mm apart, and this worked absolutely perfect.
If anyone that sees this is wondering, this is the only method to connect this many drives to a single cable, since this makes the cable the bottleneck of available amps before meltdown, instead of the connectors being said bottleneck as by using splitters.
I would feel comfortable even putting 12 ssds on one cable with this method, so long as you're not writing to all of them at the same time 24/7.

Thanks for this! I was actually looking for information on what to do if you have a SATA splitter cable where the connectors are upside down, but simply clamping some more connectors to the PSU cable sounds even better than using an splitter cable! I had no idea they were so easy to attach!

First: Great vids. Admire your skills and workshop :)
Second: You really don´t need to press the cable into the connector with a screwdriver.
Just apply all the cables in the first "gap" in the connector, then use the lid and press all the cables at the same time with a tool.

I just want to add that you can find Molex versions of these connectors, if you want to avoid having to crimp molex.
I know that buy the time of my comment molex is practically dead connection, but their are still some adapters for things that still make use of them.

Do a search for "hardware port multiplier". It will get you a reasonable way to what you want but if you mean just by wiring some cables up etc, no. Computers are generally more complex than just "splitting cables" for things other than power.
The port multiplier will do a 5:1 setup and you can choose the raid mode. As a word of warning, raid 0 (make all drives look as 1 big drive) which would be nearest what you want would see you loose everything if you get any of the 5 drives die.

It depends on the hard drives but you wouldn't want to be pulling to many amps through that cable even if the psu is capable of providing it.

i faced an issue in an HP desktop were we have a satat power wire with 4 pin connector similare to ones of a cpu ( 4pin in one side and sata power in the oposite side )coming from motherboard and he has one stat power connectore they ask me to add more hard drive but with this cabel i can only instal one; i found an edentical and not 100% matching cabel with 4 sata power connector .... the problem was the 4 pin connector in the head he is not correctly matching the orriginal one
    the soloution
i detached all 4 terminals from both cabel and change 4 pin head connector from one to the other. the cabel work and i instal hdd+ssd in one machine

Thats a good idea. but if you dont mind. actually buying this is very easy and cheap. but i dont refer buying, if i can do it i will try. but since you are the one whos capable i must strongly recommend to build a hand made, homemade 2.5 hdd sata enclosure buy using dead laptop hdd sata port, 5pin usb cable and from any other scrap wires and cable. so we can rely by recycling instead of disposing. and buying is not be more demand as option.

I know it wasn't directed at me, but battery powered soldering irons are great for quick one off jobs. They aren't powerful enough to do heavy soldering for very long. As far as outlet powered, I recommend a digital read solder station with adjustable temperature output. The reason for that, the plain 1 temperature irons you get for 5 bucks often get too hot and you go through too many tips or you get the item you're trying to solder too hot. Hope that helps.

Not from personal experience...but I've heard you can daisy chain as many Molex plugs as you want...most PSUs are just a single 12V rail, so it doesn't really matter, so long as you don't exceed the wattage...if this is true, I'd assume it's the same with SATA Power connectors...

Upwards of 20 if they are on a single rail by themselves. You could do more if you aren't writing to all of them at the same time which you probably wouldn't but I wouldn't push it.

This is relatively cheap, but works well. Look up ZD Electronic Tools ZD-929C on google. Great for general use. Only problem I've found is I've had to replace a 1000uF power supply capacitor on them after about the 2nd or 3rd year of use. They use an underrated voltage cap, so that's just a warning if you do decide to use that. Otherwise, a Weller would be a good option. Like I said, the battery is great for quicky jobs here and there, but full blown projects, go for the station.
