The literal meaning of the work Shodan (1st Dan) is First Step. This is where you are considered proficient in the basics and can now proceed to really learning karate. It is a common misconception that attaining the level of black belt means that you know and understand that martial art, whereas in reality it is only the beginning. After nearly 30 years training I find that I have more to learn than I have already taken in, which is the great thing about martial arts; one never stops learning.

@@naterassociatesltd.3046 Thanks very much for the acknowledgment. The black belt teaches me that continued practice throughout a lifetime for development is important and what matters the most.
Why are people posting comments like 'too slow' and 'this part was wrong' ? Kanazawa has been training longer, has more experience and is a higher grade than anybody posting here, if not on all of TH-cam.
even i am a black belt karate..was out of practice for years...had forgotten all my katas...when i practised them again in my camp this time..could recall them by doing just 2-3 times..so its nothin to worry...practice is the key.. :)
this kata is exactly the same as the one i learned! Glad that I learned the correct one few years ago! ^^ watching all these katas vids makes me feel like going back to the old days and train karate like there's no tmr again! haha!
it takes roughly 4 years to get to shodan in any karate style. its not unthinkable to be a shodan at 14! the youngest black belt in the u.k. is a member of my association, he is 9. and yes, he is very, very good at karate.
Been doing Shotokan since 1984. I knew all the kata’s to Empi, Unsu,Kangkudai Basaidai,Jion. And my 2nd Dan Kata Gangaku. Just had my right knee replaced. After 10 years of pain. I’m pain free now. At least the knee. Now due to over compensation my left leg is very weak. And list lots of upward flexibility. Cant bring my left knee to my chest as I can my right. So it’s a whole new learning process. Some Kata I just stop doing, because I just suffered the next day. And still had to work painting homes. In my business. And painting a home can be like doing Aikido. 8 hours a day. Up and down,up and down, up and down. Reach. M a master with a paint poke. ( Jo Staff). Long Pole. 😂😂. But I started training Shotokan n 84 because of it powerful foundational concept. And building of power and energy. And how it’s a very left/ right training. I’m very happy to be doing Kata again and kihon. Just basic technique is fun again. I had stopped kicking due to weak knee. And focus more on upper body strikes. Now get back to combining them again. OUS.
I became Shodan when I was 10 started when I was 6 and this kata is very dear to my heart as I performed it in front of my family and friends for my black belt exam. Consider reading books by Gichin Funakochi as this gentleman invented Shotokan karate and published the first books about this karate style Later Mas Oyama invented well known brutal style of karate Kyokushin, and he spent 3 years meditating and training in the mountains by himself If you want to awaken your warrior spirit Shotokan is the style for you as it builds character and humility If you really want to hurt someone Kyokushin is style for you
I guess it takes some more time than 4 years... My brother currently has 3rd kyu (going for the 2nd this winter) and he already does Karate since more than 4 years, and he passed all examinations. I think for the 1st Dan you need at least 6 years. That 9 year-old must be REALLY good.

Some thing that these videos always remindme is how much change happens, i know today jion is roughly the same but the last four movemnets have been changed, the speed is increased and the last tate uke moves slowly out in front of the body with the eyes tracking it's movements until it reaches the elbow then pow, the final kiya.
