Your teaching this old dog new tricks. I'm quit fond of my charcoal and graphite, but I have recently discovered, dare I say it, the joy of painting. I have seen other technics of mixing colors, including the color wheel, but this tutorial is a more in-depth explanation. Thank you.

most people do not know that all printed color pieces (magazines, books, etc) are comprised of black, yellow, magenta and cyan blue dots (take a loop to your magazine) so those are so pure that making most colors is easy but colors like cadmium red is already compromised by yellow if you're going to go in the other direction to make purple, so ideally a COOL and WARM of these 3 is optimum after these original cooler colors. LOVE it! Well done.

  • @elisamilan

Thank you for telling us about Quinacridone Red! I purchased a Gamblin starter kit that only has Cadnium Red and I was so frustrated with the purple that it mixed that I purchased a tube of pastel purple paint haha. I am definitely going to have to buy Quinacridone Red next! Loved all this info ♥️

For beginning artists I would say definitely have colors that adhere to both RBY as well as CMY. So a Cadmium red and Ultramarine Blue for Red and Blue (I find RBY gives you the best oranges), and a Pthalo/Manganese Blue and Quinacridone Magenta for Cyan and Magenta (I find CMY gives the greatest purples). The Cadmium Lemon is great for both sides then all you need is a titanium white and Ivory Black. It's 7 paints in total but I feel it'll probably give you every color you'll ever need :)

After 2 years painting with acrylics and messing around with lots of pigments, I recently ordered a new palette in Oils, mostly Gamblin, but some MGraham as well. I also went with TWhite, Quin Red, Ult Blue, Cadm. Yellow Light, buttttt as a substitute for Burnt Umber (didnt wanna deal with the fast drying action), I went with Nickel Azo Yellow, which is a dark translucent yellow that mixes lovely burnt umbers combined with red and blue. I also added Phthalo Green Yellow Shade as a "power color" when that blue green is needed. And thats it, 6 colors, 2 opaque, 4 transparent, but with a hell of range and mixing qualities and all slow drying.

This video was absolutely fantastic. Easy to understand, helpful and thorough with the bonus of having very similar color preferences to yours. When I started pricing things I got concerned (Wow, Cobalt!”) so it’s great to know I can achieve everything I need to begin with such a small palette. And such a small amount thanks to the extended drying time. Thanks again!

Great lesson! One other use of complementary (opposite) colors I’ve found, is they can help set each other off and provide compelling visual interest in a painting. For instance, if I have a landscape that’s heavy in green, I like to add something red to set it off and create visual interest. A painting full of green fields might be helped with a red barn. A green forest might be set off nicely with some red wildflowers in the foreground.

I use the color wheel in my head when im making a white for instance. Takes red blue and yellow to match a white bathtub for insrance. If my mix is too red, or blue, or yellow is when i go opposite of the color to knock it out. I always stay light for adding tints to be successful

Because they are not as bright when they dry I have also used some small flat bed canvas's they are like a heavy card board. So when it is dry I can look back on it to see if I need to make them brighter.

hey lena, you did a wonderful job in explaining how to mix natural colors. regarding your issue with color wheels try out using a CMY color wheel using cadmium lemon (or hansa yellow light) quinacridone red or quin, magenta and phthalo blue or cobalt teal, with these pigments you should have have a good representation of yellow, magenta and cyan. sure, an intense blue (which lays exactly in the middle between magenta and cyan) like ultramarine you cannot mix with those but you can simply add it to your palette . the same goes for cadmium red light, its just too super intense for a mixture of yellow and magenta.
keep going, you are a wonderful human being and an extremely hard working artist, you inspire me and thousands of subscribers with your paintings and painting process.
    greetings from Vienna :)
