  • UPDATE: The unidentified material I held up for cleaning pads/tone holes is called Pellon Fusible Interfacing. I think it's used for adhering pieces of fabric together by heating under an iron. Thanks to Jan Buneta in Toronto for identifying it! He's at www.trumpetguy.ca/.
How to care for your oboe between professional tune-ups, plus tips about a few simple problems you can diagnose and repair at home.
From John Kirkner, repair technician at Keystone Music Repair in Pottstown, Pennsylvania.
This video was created and uploaded in April, 2020, during the Coronavirus pandemic and resulting stay-at-home oders in Pennsylvania, when most repair shops (including mine) were closed and professional repair services weren't available to many people. I've left it up because these are great tips for maintainting your instrument any time!

Nice info John, It might be nice to do a video on adjusting. Too many oboe players are afraid to do anything with the adjustments.....HAS to be a priority .. no technicians on stage. A basic knowledge on using a test feeler and what screw adjust what key/combo is a life saver., as is using vacuum to locate a leak area.

about that Pellon Fusible Interfacing, Doesn't that leave a sticky substance on the pads. My mother used to use is for making clothes and it stuck on fabric when she ironed it. Ok I'm not going to iron my oboe, but it makes me think there is something sticky in there.
