  • Jason Onks describes how to remove keys and octave vents on an oboe in order to clean the octave vents. This will be very helpful for the oboist that plays professionally or someone striving to play professionally. Octave vents and octave tone holes can become clogged in a short period of time, i.e. couple months, if the oboe is played many hours each day. Most oboists do not live near their oboe repair person, so knowing how to clean their own octave vents can be very beneficial.
Once your octave vents have been cleaned, it is imperative that they are sealed from the outside with wax. Please check out our video on how to seal octave vents here: • Seal Octave Vents on y...

You can buy a small, cheap ultrasonic cleaner from Harbor Freight to clean the vents.

Vinnie, Yes you can. My first ultrasonic was a cheap one that was actually given to me, very cheap. Lol. One of the biggest differences between a cheap model and an industrial model is heating. My industrial model has a heated tank and has lots of ultrasonic settings for different applications. It really does the job! Best of luck! Jason Onks
