    She wasn't in love with The Doctor and she didn't want to be his second best. She wanted to be The Doctor. That was so different to all the other companions (in new Who) that came before her. I find it so refreshing that she didn't want to to go along with the idea of The Doctor being this untouchable presence. She saw him as a friend and thought she could be him.

      Although I'd disagree that Clara wasn't in love with the Doctor (since I do believe she grew to love him eventually), the rest of your assessment I agree with! Clara definitely never worshipped the Doctor in the same way most of his companions do. As you said, she kinda refused to see the Doctor as this magical authority figure who sat on a pedestal above her. She really saw the two of them as essentially being on the same level (even though River and Donna both liked to take the wind out of the Doctor's sails occasionally, it always seemed to me like they still idolized him secretly). To me, Clara is the only modern companion who really saw the Doctor as an ordinary person first, with genuine vulnerabilities and fears. She seemed to recognize that he could get scared or need help just as often as anyone else would, which I think most of his other companions kinda took for granted. Clara knew the Doctor was amazing but, he wasn't so amazing as to be seen as truly inhuman or infallible.

    my favorite part about Clara is the fact that even after 11 she's still is the girl throughout the doctor's timeline helping him and pointing him in the right direction. many people hate her for being narcissistic or an adrenaline junkie, but I think that her flaws just make her a more complete character.

      Clara's the best companion in New Who. Jack Harkness comes close but only because Torchwood fleshed him out and Sarah Jane Smith had the advantages of starring in both the Classic series and The Sarah Jane Adventures. I get the feeling that many people don't like to see very flawed characters, although most will deny this. Clara was described by Matt Smith's Doctor as "too perfect", but this facade from Season 7 was stripped away in Seasons 8 and 9 and elevated her into the most multifaceted companion since the revival of Doctor Who. I wouldn't be surprised if she's the most multifaceted in the show's history, but I can't personally confirm that because I haven't watched enough of the Classic series.
      Amy was a pretty good companion too. I think she's a bit overrated but she did show a dark side that we rarely see in Doctor Who companions. However, it felt like Steven Moffat was scared of focussing on it for too long, like he was worried that the fans would turn on her if he showed her as the ruthless killer that she's capable of being. The most notable example of this is when Amy outright murdered Madam Kovarian and it was brushed under the rug with the excuse that it happened in an alternate timeline. This mindset from writers is perfectly understandable because you don't want people to dislike your characters, unless you're designing them to be both irredeemable AND insufferable (Dolores Umbridge is the first character to come to mind because I'm convinced that J.K Rowling made her as loathsome as possible on purpose), but it can prevent them from feeling fully fleshed out.
      Technically, Clara isn't as ruthless as Amy because she never murdered anyone but because episodes like Dark Water actually focussed on her dark side instead of brushing it under the rug, the fanbase at large seems to like Amy more. I'm the other way around. The fact that Moffat developed big enough balls to show that Clara's capable of betraying her best friend whilst contemplating suicide is actually one of the things that elevates her above Amy in my mind. We're all capable of becoming monsters, it's just a matter of finding and activating the right trigger. Clara already had good reasons to resent the Doctor after he abandoned her twice earlier in Season 8 (plus, Matt Smith's Doctor actually told the Daleks "Kill her. See if I care!" in his final episode) and Danny's death was the last straw. The volcano scene in Dark Water showed Clara at her lowest point and made me feel like I'd seen into her soul. Just before the opening credits of that episode, I glimpsed a flash of madness in her eyes. Seeing her reach that point made her rise in Season 9 all the more fulfilling.
      Clara's far too good for Chinballs' Doctor Who. He's already dragged Jack Harkness into his train wreck but I hope that Clara and every other previous companion stays a million lightyears away from Jodie Whittaker. No, I will not call Whittaker the Doctor because the Doctor wouldn't trap creatures who are just trying to feed and starve them to death (Arachnids in the UK), use social awkwardness as an excuse to dismiss a man's concerns about cancer (Can You Hear Me?), or allow another man to die in her place to destroy the Master (The Timeless Children). Clara was a better Doctor without even being one of his regenerations.

      Yes, Jenna was contemplating leaving the show and the Christmas show was going to be her last show, so Moffat wanted to mirror Matt's departure with Jenna's. She, however, signed on for another season, so they had to rejuvenate Clara, because old Clara just wasn't going to be a great companion, so Moffat wrote a new ending to continue the show with Jenna young again.

    • @tomnorton4277
      @tomnorton4277 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TonyP9279 Bonnie was an interesting character despite only having 2 episodes. She was usually very composed and graceful with a streak of sadism but occasionally, she would lash out like an angry kid who didn't get her way. I like that the Doctor called her out for being "a tantruming child" and I got the feeling that she was the kind of person who represses their emotions for long periods of time, which makes them more prone to losing control when they reach a boiling point.
      For me, that Zygon 2 parter is a great example of how to tackle modern problems like domestic terrorism and delusional "save the world" activism without distracting the audience from the story the episodes are actually telling. You can compare it to modern day problems whilst also just enjoying a good story on its own merits.
      I'm glad Capaldi and Moffat convinced Jenna to stay for series 9. She's a professional and I suspect that's one of the reasons Capaldi and Moffat really liked her. They probably don't see many younger actresses (or even older ones if Sarah Silverman and Bette Midler are any indication) who conduct themselves with class and don't complain when things get difficult or when the audience is nasty. I wouldn't have watched Season 9 at all without Clara because Capaldi's Doctor really rubbed me the wrong way in Season 8. Capaldi himself is a class act but I couldn't stand how hypocritical his Doctor was and how he tended to demean Clara for no reason. Thankfully, he was much more likeable in Season 9 but without Clara, I wouldn't know that because I wouldn't have watched it.

Face the raven however was a masterpiece and then her return and flying off with Ashildar at the end was a truly fitting goodbye. I think Jenna Coleman is an incredibly talented actress and a lesser actress could not have coped with the demands of the role. I didn't like Capaldi's Doctor in Season 8 but to be fair, he was MEANT to be an asshole. Steven Moffat once said "It's time for the old beast to snarl at you for a bit" and by golly, Capaldi had snarling down to a fine art. Without Clara though, I would have left Doctor Who considerably sooner and probably would have refused to acknowledge Capaldi as the Doctor. Clara kept me invested and through her, I eventually accepted Capaldi. I think I was going through the same thing as the people who disliked Colin Baker when he first took the role.

      @@FS2K4Pilot Those parts were great but came too late. By the time I got to them, I'd stopped giving a shit about the Doctor. Not about Doctor Who in general, just the Doctor himself. I'd transitioned from hating Peter Capaldi into the cold indifference of a man who saw the Doctor die with Matt Smith and couldn't be bothered to care anymore. The Zygon Inversion was the first time I saw the Doctor since Smith's regeneration, apart from when Clara pretended to be him and did it better than the man who was supposed to be playing the real deal.
      I didn't even care that Peter Capaldi was basically in Hell in Heaven Sent. I was grieving for Clara but that was because she was important to ME, not because she was important to the Doctor. As far as I was concerned, he was just a tool to get her back. I couldn't care less about the pain he was going through to do so. Kind of fitting since Capaldi often treated people like tools to be used and discarded once they've served their purpose. His Doctor's a bad influence.

      Clara's relationship with Capaldi's Doctor was completely unique and that's why it holds up. I can't think of any other relationship in Doctor Who, or any franchise for that matter, that's quite like theirs. It's like the Doctor was Clara's dad and brother at the same time because he combined the unconditional love of a parent with the petty sniping of a sibling. Clara looked up to him like a daughter would look up to her father, whilst also wanting to outdo him with the kind of tenacity you'd see from a little sister trying to prove herself to her big brother. She deeply respected the Doctor but it wasn't hero worship like it was from most other companions. It was more of a "If the Doctor can be this amazing, so can I" mindset which pushed Clara to take more and more risks until it came back to bite her in Face the Raven. These tendencies were magnified by the fact that Danny was no longer around to keep her grounded in Series 9. Speaking of Danny (who's a very underrated character if you ask me), remember when Clara was nervous about introducing him to the Doctor? It was the kind of insecurity that a teenage girl would have about introducing her boyfriend to her dad.
      Another great thing about Clara's relationship with Capaldi's Doctor is that it wasn't romantic. Ever since Paul McGann swept Grace Holloway off her feet in the TV movie, the Doctor's relationships with his female companions, and even some of his male ones like Jack Harkness, have been romanticised to varying degrees. The only exception was David Tennant's relationship with Donna Noble. Clara had her romantic time with Matt Smith's Doctor but when Capaldi came along, their relationship changed and became more like family members than lovers.
      I think the best part is that Clara and the Doctor were equals. Most companions look up to the Doctor in ways that can fall into hero worship. Even Jack, who had a history of time travelling before he met the Doctor AND became immortal, kind of acted like the Doctor was a god. Donna's arguably an exception but when push came to shove, the Doctor gave her no choice in whether she would die with all her memories or live without them. As for River Song, she was written as going too far in the opposite direction, putting her head and shoulders above the Doctor in many ways, to the point where I would even call her a Mary Sue. To Alex Kingston's credit, she's one of the very few actresses who managed to make a Mary Sue likeable but that doesn't erase the problems with the writing. Fortunately, it seems to me that Steven Moffat learned from his mistakes with River because Clara's relationship with the Doctor was very evenly balanced. If she had his lifespan and regeneration abilities, they would be equals in every way. The Doctor's relationship with Clara is a perfect example of how to portray men and women as equals without resorting to romance.

    My first and favorite companion! Her time with Peter Capaldi is my most favorite era on this show. There was something about her character trying to find herself through her journeys with the Doctor that resonated so deeply with me: a pilot as Oswin, a governess and nanny as both Victorian and present-day Clara, an English teacher with the Eleventh Doctor and the Twelfth…I felt like her becoming different things or playing different roles for different people at different times in her life encapsulated what it was like to find and build an identity throughout one’s life. She made it clear to me that it was OKAY to change and be affected by such change because life itself rarely stayed the same. You could work through the changes and adapt to them, making them work in your favor if you wanted. She was also a large part of my decision to study English in university to one day become a teacher. I adore and feel indebted to this character and Jenna Coleman’s amazing work on this show for how it had shaped me as a teenager growing into a young adult. 💙💙

      Clara's my favourite companion despite not being the first one I saw. I watched the others from Ecclestone's era to Smith's era before she joined and the only one who left a strong impression was Jack Harkness, and that's partially because of Torchwood. I've gained more respect for Billie Piper, both as Rose and as the Moment (I like that she played the Moment as distinctly different from Rose because they just share the face, not the character), but Rose wasn't the most interesting of companions. Amy's pretty cool too but they tended to ignore how slutty she was and brushed the fact that she was a murderer under the rug by implying that killing Kovarian in an alternate universe doesn't count.
      Clara was the companion I bonded with the most. I appreciate that they had the guts to show her at her lowest point in Dark Water and, unlike Amy murdering Kovarian, they didn't brush over the fact that betraying the Doctor was wrong. Personally, I think Clara was justified in her decision in Dark Water, not only because of Danny's death but also because the Doctor had abandoned her TWICE in previous episodes, first in Deep Breath and then in Kill the Moon. In the latter episode he wasn't simply in disguise after pretending to leave Clara, he outright took the TARDIS and flew away, leaving her stranded in a very stressful situation with a teenager and an unborn child in her care and a decision that had the potential to destroy the world on her shoulders. Side note, Clara would be an amazing mother. Back on topic, she was giving the Doctor a taste of his own medicine in Dark Water. However, from a purely ethical point of view, it was still wrong and both Clara and the Doctor acknowledged that, although the Doctor ranting "You let me down!" is incredibly hypocritical when you take Kill the Moon into account. Regardless, we saw Clara reach her lowest point and it made her rise in Season 9 all the more satisfying. Unlike River Song, who I actually like but only because of Alex Kingston (very few actresses can pull off a Mary Sue without being annoying but she's one of them), Clara earned the right to fly a TARDIS.

Clara's the most fleshed out companion within the context of Doctor Who itself, at least since the series was revived in 2005. You could argue that Sarah Jane Smith and Jack Harkness were very fleshed out too but this was ONLY because they each had a spinoff series and Sarah Jane was around in Tom Baker's era.

      Clara, Oswin and Clara Oswin were fundamentally the same person but if all 3 of them were in the same room, you'd still be able to tell them apart. Jenna's attention to detail rivals that of Laurence Olivier. I think she actually has more natural talent than he did because although Olivier's attention to detail was superb, he wasn't born with as much talent as, for example, Marlon Brando and there are people, including my grandmother, who think that he tended to ham it up. Jenna was rivalling performers like John Hurt and Diana Rigg, both of whom had decades of experience and legendary reputations, before she even reached the age of 30 and she continued to rival, if not surpass Rigg when they reunited for Victoria. I think the only living actress who might surpass Jenna in raw talent is Michelle Pfeiffer, who has consistently claimed that she was self-taught.

    • @hgwells1899
      @hgwells1899 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      The perfect "welcome to the TARDIS" scene. Like how Lucas or Spielberg took familiar moments from old genre movies and honed them into scenes which seemed like all-new, instant classics, Moffat did that with Victorian Clara and the trope of becoming a companion. Okay, so it was as a set up to an unpleasant twist I kind of wish had never happened, but it really should have played here if these are genuinly her "best of"

      @MrAllallalla 2 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      Because she's unapologetically narcisstic. Acts entitled, thinks too highly of her and is cruel to the people around her, the Doctor and Danny. At least when Moffat writes her. I found her likeable in the Jamie Mathieson scripts, Mummy and Flatline

      @@MrAllallalla You say she's narcissistic, but found her likeable in Flatline, an episode where she is the most narcissistic in the whole series from her being in the doctor's shoes. Kinda weird dude.

      One reason I suspect is that she got so many great and rare honours as a companion. Very few companions get to be a “trans Doctor companion”, that is they’re travelling with them when they regenerate and continue travelling with them in their next iteration. Very few get to “do the rounds” of villains and aliens and meet (or at least be in the same story as) most if not all of the Doc’s recurring enemies. Very few get to be the incumbent companion for a big milestone. Like I say each of those are rare honours for any companion I can think of ONLY TWO in the entire history of Doctor Who who were lucky enough to get ALL of them: Tegan and Clara. If Rory and Amy had stopped on for just a short while longer all that of could have been their’s. But no along comes little Miss Jenny come lately and swipes ‘em all. So some of it *might* be a touch of the green eyed monster from Pond fans

    • @TaliesinapCerridwen
      @TaliesinapCerridwen 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@bombsaway6197 Not really. She didn’t really feature in a milestone as Billie Piper was playing a different character, not Rose as such. And even if the character of Rose did feature, she wasn’t the incumbent companion. So like a few others (Peri and Sarah for instance) she comes close, but I vote no.

    I haven't watched Face the Raven or Hell Bent since they came out half a decade ago. Now I'm crying again. I accepted long ago that I would never relive the incredible impact they had on me when I first watched them. After Face the Raven, I spend the whole of Heaven Sent grieving for Clara and Hell Bent gave me an extraordinary experience that will never be replaced, combining a heartbreaking end with an optimistic future which left me a sobbing wreck. However, the fact that these scenes make me sad all these years later is good enough for me.

    What I love best about this Doctor -- or rather this Doctor with Amy -- is how strongly it affirms that a relationship between a male and female can very strong, with unbreakable bonds, without being a romantic relationship, or mother/son, or brother/sister, or teacher/student, or any other things but friend/friend. I've been so incredibly blessed to have one, and it has seemed too good to be friend/friend. A friendship bond can be stronger than the others.
