    This moment absolutely enCAPSULATED what the old Yankee stadium was all about, and what Donnie Baseball was all about. I’ve been a Yankee fan since the day I was born and I’ve seen multiple championships and tons of playoff games, and this has been, and is still my favorite moment in Yankee history. His back was shot, but he let it all hang out for these playoff games, and as fans we got a major treat as once again, one last time, we got to see the Mattingly of old. The greatest part about this homerun aside from the actual homerun, and the roar of the crowd which was unbelievable, it was the reaction of his teammates. Just watch Bernie Williams give a double high-five to I think Posada. It was celebratory, but it was also a proud high, five, because they were also happy to see their captain shine. Mattingly was such a special player, and if everyone played the game, the way he did, even 25%, the game overall would be so much better. he is by far and away my favorite professional baseball player of all time, and had he not gotten plagued with back issues, he would have been a first ballot, Hall of Famer, and a Mount Rushmore Yankee. What’s to say about him, I mean the guy was named after the sport by Hall of Famer, Kirby Pucket. Thank you, Donnie Baseball for all of the thrills growing up. You made me very proud to be a Yankee fan. I hope someday the Yanks bring you back as a manager and you get your well-deserved World Series ring.

    I've been to a little over 60 Yankee games in my life. Four of them were in the postseason(including this one). I never felt, saw or heard the place get any crazier than when Mattingly put that ball in the bleachers. We all just lost our minds. Hands down, my favorite memory at a game.

    • @donwilcox728
      @donwilcox728 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      I was in the bleachers four rows back from where the ball landed. Tracked it the whole way, it was coming right at me. One thing I remember was that while the ball was in the air the entire stadium took a deep breath in anticipation and then........
      well you can see it for yourselves absolute bedlam. It was a decade of pent up frustration and love for a great player finally being able to be released. By far my favorite and most memorable moment I ever had at a live sporting event. We, the fans finally got to show Mattingly how we felt and it was a magical moment for the ages. If only he could have held on for one more year. You could see that the foundation for greatness was already present in the dugout in the forms of Boggs, Strawberry, Leyritz, Posada, Jeter and Bernie. Torre would arrive a few months after this and it was off to the races.

    Four of us bought bleacher seats a half hour before game time for fifty bucks a ticket. Best money I ever spent. The crowd was insane starting with player introductions and never let up. Mattingly's homer landed five rows in front of us. There was almost a hush from the crowd while the ball was in the air and then we all went berserk. We all waited over a decade for this opportunity to show Mattingly how much he meant to us and it just came pouring out. I remember the stadium actually moving. And this was just the beginning of a wild game. I didn't get home until four AM and called out of work sick a few hours later. But of all the sporting events I've ever been to, this is my favorite and the loudest crowd I've ever been a part of. A close second was being in Giants Stadium for the 1986 NFC Championship, but this was even better.

Six whole dollars got us in - I would smuggle in some cheap vodka and poor it into my orange soda that I would buy. It’s a shame the Yanks couldn’t get to a world series during Mattingly’s career. 1985 was their best shot, it was also Don’s best statistical year. They blew it in September in a four game series against Toronto that year. 1995, the year of this playoff series, the Yanks were in the post season thanks to the newly re- aligned divisions and the wild card entry. They would have not made it if that change in format not been made. As fate would have it, Don’s career was over after this series and the Yanks would make the World Series 6 of the next 8 seasons, winning 4. I believe Don holds a Yankee record of most games played without ever appearing in the WS.

Didn't think about that being the last time Donny Baseball was in pinstripes playing in Yankee Stadium. That game was just awesome. We knew it would be Mattingly's last game in Yankee stadium. Don hits the go ahead homer. The place was going insane, Pinella pulls the players off, and I saw Sweet Lou get drilled in the chest by the thrown program of a Yankee fan. It was so disrespectful, rude and hilarious at the same time. The entire crowd on fire electric, fans chanting Donny Baseball at high volume. Mariano Rivera closed it after 15 innings!!! I'll never understand how the idiot HOF voters did not put Mattingly in the HOF. Although his tremendous greatness was over a six year period from 1983-1989, what he did in that time period is remarkable. He also won nine gold gloves. There are many players in the HOF that never at any point in their career could they stand in the shoes of Don Mattingly from 1984-1989. Same can be said about the likes of Dick Allen, Dave Parker, Dale Murphy, Keith Hernandez, Steve Garvey among others.
