  • Join me for a full audiobook reading of Clark Ashton Smith’s “The Seven Geases,” a darkly whimsical tale set in the frozen realm of Hyperborea. First published in the October 1934 issue of Weird Tales, this weird fiction classic blends cosmic horror, grim humor, and bizarre encounters with ancient deities and arcane monstrosities.
In “The Seven Geases,” an arrogant hunter named Ralibar Vooz trespasses on sacred ground, only to be cursed-and thereby geased-to fulfill a horrifying obligation in the depths of Hyperborea. Traveling from one monstrosity to the next, he discovers that the frozen wastes teem with forbidden cults and eldritch entities, including the infamous Tsathoggua. Smith’s prose radiates a sense of haunting beauty while showcasing his trademark blend of dark comedy and looming dread.
If you enjoy sword-and-sorcery with a unique twist, or you’re a fan of Lovecraftian themes and pulp-era fantasy, this story is a must-listen. Enter Smith’s Hyperborea, where icy vistas meet uncanny gods, and an unfortunate mortal is forced from one perilous deity to the next in a chain of unsettling encounters.

It really was a toss-up between doing his Zothique cycle or his Hyperborea cycle first, tbh. So the Zothique cycle will have its day soon ;)

Clark Ashton Smith hadn't been on my radar until now. What a great story (and great narration, as always). I knew the odd story by him but now I'm looking forward to more of your narrations. Just finished this now. Awesome! Thank you, man!

I've gotten a list of authors people wanted me to look into during a livestream a couple weeks back, and an easy one from that list was CAS. The man has SO MANY stories as well, so he'll definitely be popping up from time to time on the channel. Thanks for listening!
