About time someone addressed this topic with clear, concise information. Thank you for providing helpful guidelines what not to mix with and why. I see so much confusion on this subject...it's unreal!
It can get very confusing, I agree!! I feel like I have to weed through periodically to make sure consensus hasn’t changed....so I’m glad to be helpful! 💜
You just took us to skincare church! Thank you so much for the info. I have to watch again and take notes, before I can gather together any questions. Lol
Happy Friday! Ok just rewatched. Very interested in retinaldehyde. Curious though.... How does Adapelene compare to retinaldelhyde?? What is the difference between these two?
Maritza & the VanCuties so Adapalene is an interesting one...it is non-prescription now but it is the active form of the vitamin. Up to now it’s primarily used for acne treatment. I am not aware of studies confirming it’s anti aging capabilities. Retinaldehyde is inactive, one enzymatic conversion away from being active. Retinaldehyde is the type of vitamin A that is good for anti aging (collagen stimulation etc). I’ll dig a little deeper on adapalene but it’s my understand that’s it’s still an acne topical primarily 😊
Another incredible video! The amount of time and heart you put into your videos is beyond commendable. Thank you Penny for supporting our small business, being an amazing esthetician, and providing the world with your knowledge. We ❤️ you!
Thank you Penny!! I watch your videos over and over. Absolutely I’m love with you, our skincare Queen. I was getting confused with Squalane and Retinal. I just order one from your recommendations. Now I think I have everything and I am clear now... thank you again. Your passionate about skin care and you love what you do and this is why I am here. Blessings to you and much success!
I love your channel ❤️❤️ something I learned from Dr. Dray is you can apply your moisturizer onto damp skin immediately after cleansing and then once you skin is completely dry, apply your retinoid! I have very sensitive skin and this works like a charm. I’ll even apply a bit of moisturizer on top of the retinoid and it works really well :) subscribed and can’t wait to learn more ☺️
This video is wonderful! It's the best explanation I have ever seen on this subject! I've heard we shouldn't use Vitamin C and AHAs and BHAs with Retin A before but you are the first to explain why. It's so helpful to understand the ph scale! I finally understand the difference between active Retin A and non-active. Again that's so helpful! I've never understood Retin A well enough to feel confident using it in any form. It scared me. I now feel comfortable enough to try it. Thank you! Can you tell me how to find a toner that will bring the ph of my skin back down to 4.5-5.5 ph after using the alkaline product Clearista?
It looks like there is an overwhelming need to understand these concepts better, of knowing the PH of products and how to layer them. I would love to learn more please!
As always, awesome information! Love my Retin A and it has made a huge difference in my skin. But, I did exactly what you said- I started super slowly and I am so glad I was patient Thank you for another great video 💕
I’ve started applying my retin a to my hands and it makes a world of difference in them! I’m 35 but my hands weren’t something I really thought about until recently and I’m glad I did! I’ve been using retin a for 10 years and it started for acne but I’m so glad I have been diligent about it😀
Hi Penny my friend Richard told me I had to subscribe to your channel cause you had the best skincare tips, so I had to subscribe 🙂! Thank you Penny I am very happy to have found your channel! 😊
Oh, this video is so important. Everything you explained helps so very much! I'm just starting with glycolic, hyaluronic, Vit. C, niacinomide, and want to get some type of Vit. A as well. Telling us that using the others at the same time as Vit. A will weaken them is so crucial. I would never have known that! I just got the Helio sunscreen too and will be faithful in using it. Penn, you are so professional and knowledgeable. I admire your integrity and trust you. Can't thank you enough. xxoo
You explain things very clearly - I love that. It's also super helpful to have examples of these different types of product in the description box - we can see which we may want to order. What are your thoughts of the newest item I've been hearing touted now as an alternative to Retin-A....Bakuchiol. I've purchased two types (pads and a serum) and while it's very nice on the skin, I have to wonder how it might compare in the long run. Retin-A has been very harsh for my skin - supposedly Bakuchiol is 'what to use' now... enjoy your weekend!!
This is, without a doubt, the best explanation of retinoids I have EVER seen. Step-by-step and comprehensive. It makes me think that everyone else who has tried to explain the difference actually doesn't understand the difference themselves.......Go Penn
Happy Friday, beautiful. No matter how old you are, slow, and steady does win the race with Retin A. You know I always enjoy your videos, Penny. Blessings, and love..MaryEllen
Thanks Penny, I think this is the most informative video on how to actually start using a retinoid. The mention of a lag time stood out for me - my skin started flaking two days after the first time using retinal. I’ve also found it useful to let my skin dry for no less than 30 minutes before retinal at night, and before sunscreen (which can sting on the newly sensitized skin) in the morning.
I’m so glad this was helpful💙 And your 30 min is crucial! I agree! I’ve learned over the years that applying anything on skin with any hydration (as in it was wet) with amplify the effects (good and bad). So you are spot on with your approach!
Penn, your makeup is perfection! I’m getting ready to increase my Curology prescription so this is a timely video for me. Thank you. I purchased Clearista and Theraderm for flakes from using tretinoin. If I’m hopping in the shower, I will use Clearista but Theraderm is easier to use (and gentler, imo) than anything else I’ve tried. I’m so grateful you mentioned these products.
Yes I am. The footage from my last peel had a tragic accident 😔 So I have to do another peel, and I’m planning that in the next 2 weeks. Trust me when I tell you I was not happy!!
I love that you are explaining pH and the layering effect. Once we have our serums/treatments on, like deerskin,.... will our moisturizers cancel out any goodies from our serums due to pH? I don’t want to throw money down the drain either. Thank you so much!
What about Copper peptides? I know you’re not suppose to use Vit C and copper peptides together, but I wasn’t sure if the copper peptides affect a TretinoinI use?
i learned A LOT from this! I've been layering serums under my retinoid to mitigate irritation, but i think start applying to bare skin... thank you for the information! always get something from your content.
Whenever retinaldehyde is talked about, I get giddy with excitement. I have used it for over a decade and it's the most importanant thing in my routine. I'm not even considerig tretinoin, because for me, the cons outweigh the pros. It"s *much* gentler than even retiol, and, being ADD and impatient I started using it every night. And if my skin was feeling a bit tender I just skipped a night. You also see results much quicker. Not that your fine lines suddenly disappear, but after about fourteen days your skin feels healthier and more vibrant. And I have read several studies that claim - but I don't know how - r etinaldehyde isn't sun sensitising. A lot of prople say it's too unatable to stay effective, but on some mornings there's a certain numbness underneath the skin, quite different from sutface irritation. And many years ago when I'd run out of it, my skin seemed to fall apart after a few weeks. And I"m not sure it is genes (it certainly isn't healthy living!), but I look a lot younger than just about any 48 year old. And, unlike retinol or retinoin, retinaldehyde has antibacterial action on P.acnes. And a study from 2006 they compared the efficacy and safety of the retinoids and other "anti-aging" ingredients. They concluded that aldehyde was a better bet than retinol. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2699641/#__ffn_sectitle
Hi Penny! Thanks for another fantastic ”lesson”! You explain everything in a way that makes it easy to understand quite complicated things. I have bought some products that you have talked about previously and they have worked SO well, for example Avene 3 in 1 cleanser (for dry skin) and Avene Physiolift night balm, which I also love. I use Tretinoin twice a week and the other days I use the Physiolift. I do have a question for you that I hope you can answer and that is if you can explain the difference between the Physiolift and RetrinAL, which you mentioned in the description box in this video. Thanks from a devoted fan of yours 🤗❤️
VERY helpful. I got my 2and organizer in; I'm having a Retinoid/beauty supply sale this weekend. Lol. I have Remarkable Retional Serum, Retinol Plus, etc. Perfect timing on the video. Thanks little Guru 💞
Penny thank you so much for sharing your knowledge, I learn so much from your videos than any other channel on TH-cam and get my questions answered, thank you for being so sincere about helping us understand about skincare, products, and to learn how to listen to our skin to achieve the best results. Thank you Penny I appreciate your videos so very much!🤗💖🤗💖🤗
You are the BOMB Penny. All the content you share is SO good. I never find myself fast forwarding you cause every single word of yours is useful. You are very profesional and I appreciate all the knowledge you share. Love love love your channel.
From another Annette, I agree your eye are stunning. I'm going to show your videos to my ophthalmologist to see if he can get me contacts that give my already blue eyes the beautiful icy blue color. Love your channel.
Hi Penny. I am binge watching all your videos you've made lately. I'm really enjoying all your info. It's been awhile since I got into the ingredients of products.
Hi and love listening to you. I have Avène RetrinAL 0.1 that I bought at dermatologist office, but honestly never noticed a difference. Also, since I use Osmosis, I also have Correct. I do however have a burning sensation from that so I don't use often. Perhaps I've been using it wrong in application or that my skin is too sensitive for. Clueless. Hope all is going well! 🥰
Hi Penny, This is a great video - thank you so much for this information. It clarifies some things that I was confused about. You provide amazing information for the 'common' skincare user. Take care, Ginny 😘😘😘
I am new here but loving you and your info. I do have a question (not sure if i should ask in another video but here it is) - would you consider doing a video for beginners to skin care who are over 50. yep i am 53 just went through major skin cancer surgery and also developing horrible lines and sagging on face. i am trying to finally learn skin care but really need beginner info. what to use to get started and what order. best products - etc. i have found the ordinary line and love what i have bought so far but not sure if i am using products correctly and what product i need. anyway hope you consider a video of info for us older skincare newbies. thanks!
Thank you so much for this video - very informative. I appreciate the time you are taking to make this content. The Ph scale is super interesting. I know many have asked and I'm signing up as well - i would love a complete AM / PM skincare routine for dry / aging skin. I love products so if you said do these 10 products every night i would do them all! And I think it would be amazing if you could do a price point recommendation - like for cleanser these are the top 3 you would buy at the top end, middle price, and bottom end. I think you would make so many people giddy if you were able to do something like this. xoxo
Thank you, Penny. I really enjoyed your videos and have learned so much and have ordered some of your product recommendations. I found you looking for micro-needling tutorials. My skin is looking great and now I am educating my mom:) . Keep this great stuff coming. xx
Your videos are so, so informative. I was excited to see this pop up since I picked up my first tube of Retin A Micro today! Is there any difference in how micro and regular should be used? 💛
Penny, please check into Medik 8. They have a couple of great retinaldehyde formulations. I’ve been using the Crystal Retinal 10 nightly for a couple of years. They also have a new product R-Retinoate. It’s nice but their Crystal Retinal 10 has worked the best for me. No irritation or excessive dryness. I use sunscreen rain or shine, both inside and out. I also carry the Colorscience powder sunscreen to touch up my face, ears and visible skin. I think the biggest thing is patience. I love your advice. You should write a book. Thank you for your willingness to share your knowledge.😘❤️
There are retinol products all over the place, but I have found very few retinaldehyde products. I am using Avene and love that they put the concentration of retinaldehyde on the bottle. I am also interested in Osmosis Advanced Retinal Serum and Arcona Advanced A serum which are also retinaldehyde products, but neither the Osmosis nor the Arcona tell you anywhere what the concentration of retinaldehyde is in their products. I do wish skin care companies would get on board that we want to know the strength of the products we are buying :(
Thank you Penn, I did buy differin and vitamin C and am going to start and using faithfully but I will start slowly like you suggested. your video's are so helpful and answer so many questions I have, thank you Penn. appreciate it 😊😊😊!
This is such an informative video! I found the charts very useful and liked that you kept them on screen while you were talking. Does prescription Retin-A help with laxity along the jawline, and if so, how long would it take to see results? Or would you recommend another treatment/product/procedure to address this issue? I’m typically careful with Retin-A near my jaw because I’ve found it can migrate down my neck which is very irritating! Thanks for your always informative videos!! I so appreciate your content.
Great video! I always had so many questions about this subject. I just got my prescription Curology in the mail and while they recommend starting every other day, I'm going to go with every 72 hours. I have extremely sensitive skin, especially on my forehead as a side effect for a biologic I take. Thanks so much Penny!
Lol! You're lucky, you found the sweet spot. Is not necessary to get bad peeling to get good results. Im gonna start retin a soon, I hope I don't get any bad peeling.
Your information is well researched, concise, informative and very user friendly. I am so glad I found your channel. Are there any products containing retinaldehyde that you can recommend? Thanks for speaking to us, not at us. Big difference.
Hi Penny! I LOVE all your videos, they are so informative! I'm wondering if you have any thoughts on Differin/adapalene? It's available over the counter now in a 0.1% strength. I was thinking about giving this one a try.Their website states that you can apply it morning or night.
Adapalene is the exception the the OTC/active form umbrella. It is now OTC but it is also active :)) So that’s pretty awesome. Are you wanting it for anti aging or acne? It has been studied for acne but no conclusive evidence that it stimulates collagen (that I’ve seen, new studies come out all the time). I’ll look at their website-the morning application is an interesting recommendation 🤔 I do think adapalene is a very viable option depending on your particular skincare concern. 💜
@@PENNSMITHSKINCARE I do want to use it for anti-aging, but could only find one study that mentioned that there was a reduction in wrinkles...www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12833014 So, maybe tretinoin would be a better choice for now. I was just interested in fewer side effects that Differin offers. I tried retin-a years ago and hated the peeling. But maybe I tried to introduce it too quick. Thanks for the advice! ~Mira
I have been using a Clarisonic at night for about the last month. I’ve not heard you mention manual exfoliation a lot. I’m curious to know i could still use my Clarisonic with chemical exfoliates or should I skip that step?
Thank you so much for all your help....I find you to be such a fountain of knowledge! I’ve been using Retin A for 30 years and feel it’s been the best thing for my 65 year old face. I have a question though about another serum you’ve recommended and one that I’ve been enjoying. I use my Retin A at night along with dearskin tranex. I’ve not had one bit of irritation using both of them in my evening routine. But, I want to double check with you to make sure it’s ok to use these two together. Or, do you feel I should use the tranex in the morning? Thank you !!
I've been trying to incorporate retinol into my LED red light routine which I do daily. What I have red thus far is to try to do LED first / before your retinol. If you do LED in the morning then it seems to not be an issue but I don't have time to do that in the AM. so far I have been doing led in the evening first, then after it, I put on my tretinoin. Hope this is helpful. But would be happy to hear from Penny! :)
All the ph talk was so confusing to me and the talk about what goes with what based on the ph. Can you please do a follow up video in more user friendly terms? You are so knowledgeable but me sitting at home trying to learn makes it difficult to disipher. Thank you for all that you do! Sheila
Sorry it was confusing! Basic take away: I don’t mix AHAs and retinoids (irritating) I don’t mix BHA and retinoids (irritating). If I use vitamin C with retinoids I wait 30 minutes between the 2. Less is more so we don’t irritate the skin as much as possible 💜
You’re like my niece, photographic memory! She’s a P.A. Here in Texas and you rattle off your info like she does hers! Never skips a beat! I’m jealous of you both! Lol! I’m interested to know your protocol for a TCA prep...am I wasting my products by using them before I have a peel? My skin is so dull I feel nothing is penetrating! I’m 68 and luckily I have no pigmented areas or spots but some chin and mild redness on my cheeks from Rosace and want better looking texture. I’ve started Retin-A this week. Also would you look at City Beauty’s microsculpting cream ingredients deck. Is there anything that would keep you from absolutely ever using it?? I would like to try it for my neck and jawline skin. Thanks!
Hi! You are such a great teacher! Skincare is so overwhelming and you have answered so many of my questions as I start to get serious about skincare in my early 40s. I ordered the cos de baha retinol and it has HA and Niacinamide...is it okay if I use those separately as well or is it overkill? Love you and thanks in advance!
Thank you so much Penny, your information is always so helpful!!! I switched to the Mychelle retinaldehyde and am seeing better results than I was with the retinol I was using. I also have the Thermaderm and Clearista at your recommendation from other videos and love those products. So great I never would have found them otherwise I am sure. Thank you!!
No they often don’t. I usually have to either test them myself (ph strips) or google and research to find a ph (often other people have tested products and will post about it, a valuable resource that I have to confirm but it’s helpful to start!)
Fellow Canadians: I was trying to find the Avene Retrinal 0.1 here in Canada but that line isn't available. BUT! The Avene Ystheal Intense ingredients list is almost exactly the same as the Retrinal. Same goes for the Retrinol 0.5 = Ystheal Cream. It's also cheaper too! Hope that helps anyone :)
Hi Penny. SMITH. Really enjoy your videos. It's simple it's precise n mostly very informative with other utubers lack in. I'm really happy to find ur videos. Can you please do a review on some. French hypoallergenic product that are available in drugstore. Like Aderma. Avene bioderm uriage and LA Roche pochey n vichy. I looked everywhere n I had not found one video that compares these product. Thank you
Hi I need a bit of clarification are Retinol and Retinaldehyde also considered retinoids? Also can they be worn during the day? Thanks for all the great information. 🙂
Why doesn't this woman have 15M followers? I'm so thankful to have found you! Thank you for being so thorough and informative!

Dawn's Life, over 40 awww thank you my beautiful lamb chop!!🥰🥰🥰
Your makeup is very pretty and so are your eyes. :)
Thank you Annette! So kind!
Osmosis clarify is really good! Granted it takes time
Great video you never disappoint, love the way you explain. Can you suggest something for corner of mouth we’re they are turned down??
Hi Penny, This is a great video - thank you so much for this information. It clarifies some things that I was confused about. You provide amazing information for the 'common' skincare user. Take care, Ginny 😘😘😘
Thank you so much Ginny😊
I hope your year is off to a good start lady 💜💜💜
Happy Wednesday! 💕
I am new here but loving you and your info. I do have a question (not sure if i should ask in another video but here it is) - would you consider doing a video for beginners to skin care who are over 50. yep i am 53 just went through major skin cancer surgery and also developing horrible lines and sagging on face. i am trying to finally learn skin care but really need beginner info. what to use to get started and what order. best products - etc. i have found the ordinary line and love what i have bought so far but not sure if i am using products correctly and what product i need. anyway hope you consider a video of info for us older skincare newbies. thanks!
I am working on this video:-)
I think it’s a fantastic idea and would be so helpful to so many!!
I’m so glad you’re here! 💜
Thank you so much for helping me wade through this!!!!!! I really appreciate all of your tutorials. Have a great weekend.
I hope you have a great weekend as well! 💜💜💜
I think you would make so many people giddy if you were able to do something like this. xoxo
Your Ph chart cleared up a lot for me. Very informative 💖
Oh good!! I’m so glad!
Love watching your videos and learning!! Thank you for sharing your knowledge in skin care ❤️
You do a great job explaining things Penn!
Thank you Debbie!
You are an incredible wealth of knowledge. Thanks again
Thank you, Penny. I really enjoyed your videos and have learned so much and have ordered some of your product recommendations. I found you looking for micro-needling tutorials. My skin is looking great and now I am educating my mom:) . Keep this great stuff coming. xx
Thank you! That is so great! 💜
Your videos are so, so informative. I was excited to see this pop up since I picked up my first tube of Retin A Micro today! Is there any difference in how micro and regular should be used? 💛
FABULOUS video. You're amazing at explaining the info and the visuals were SO helpful. Thank you!
Thank you Joy!!!
Kindly do a video for laugh lines ,which ingredients work which are the best products for laugh lines
I’ll work on that idea!
PENN.SMITH.SKINCARE LLC Thanx anxiously waiting
Thank you Penn for breaking it down for us so that it makes sense. I appreciate all the information! xoxo
Thank you JDee!! 💜💜💜
Hi are you still using 10? Any update?
Thank you for breaking this down. It was so informative! Thank you.
HI Penny, You have been knocking it out of the park lately. Thank you again for another great and helpful video. Have a great weekend! XOXO Sharon
Thank you so much Sharon for those kind words! I’m trying!
I’m thankful for people like you here:-))
Makes all of this even more fun 💕💕💕
Great job Penny, now makes more sense to me. All these products can really get confusing.
I’m so glad it was helpful! 💜
I do wish skin care companies would get on board that we want to know the strength of the products we are buying :(
Thank you Penny!🙏 Can’t wait for your next video!❤️
Thank you Penn, I did buy differin and vitamin C and am going to start and using faithfully but I will start slowly like you suggested. your video's are so helpful and answer so many questions I have, thank you Penn. appreciate it 😊😊😊!
FINALLY!, someone explained it so I could understand it!
I am so glad I found you! Do you have suggestions on oily skin regimen? Thank you so much!!
I would love to see a video by you about anything to help with rosacea. Are retinoids safe for those with rosacea?
Thank you so much for this! I just started using Retin A, and your tips have helped with retinization.
A very informative video and easy to understand.
Amazing Explanation by far!💕
I finally know the difference between active and non-active. Thank you so much!!
Madam u r the best u give practical knowledge I am a huge fan of you love from india. You deserve lot more subscribers.
Great video! I always had so many questions about this subject. I just got my prescription Curology in the mail and while they recommend starting every other day, I'm going to go with every 72 hours. I have extremely sensitive skin, especially on my forehead as a side effect for a biologic I take. Thanks so much Penny!
Great lesson! I understood your explanation on these products! Thank you Penny💕
Can you please compare osmosis retinal vs medik8 retinal? Which one would you prefer? Love your videos ❤️
I think I have crocodile skins because I didn’t have any reaction from using Retin A.
Thx Penny your knowledge is so helpful 😀 Love my LED therapy I’ve started on my face. 👍😀😀😀
It is now OTC but it is also active :))
So that’s pretty awesome.
Are you wanting it for anti aging or acne? It has been studied for acne but no conclusive evidence that it stimulates collagen (that I’ve seen, new studies come out all the time).
I’ll look at their website-the morning application is an interesting recommendation 🤔
I do think adapalene is a very viable option depending on your particular skincare concern. 💜

I do want to use it for anti-aging, but could only find one study that mentioned that there was a reduction in wrinkles...www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12833014
So, maybe tretinoin would be a better choice for now. I was just interested in fewer side effects that Differin offers. I tried retin-a years ago and hated the peeling. But maybe I tried to introduce it too quick. Thanks for the advice!

I have been using a Clarisonic at night for about the last month. I’ve not heard you mention manual exfoliation a lot.
I’m curious to know i could still use my Clarisonic with chemical exfoliates or should I skip that step?
As always great information, thank you for your dedication, research and time to provide truethful information.
Is there a way to print this PH scale?
Thank you so much for all your help....I find you to be such a fountain of knowledge!
I’ve been using Retin A for 30 years and feel it’s been the best thing for my 65 year old face. I have a question though about another serum you’ve recommended and one that I’ve been enjoying. I use my Retin A at night along with dearskin tranex. I’ve not had one bit of irritation using both of them in my evening routine. But, I want to double check with you to make sure it’s ok to use these two together. Or, do you feel I should use the tranex in the morning? Thank you !!
Totally ok to use those together. The caveat would be if there was irritation. Since there’s not, you’re good to go!
💜
I LOVE your channel!!! Would you recommend the Avene or Mychelle for super sensitive skin?
Super new to all these steps and different formulations. How do you actually know the PH of the serums, Solutions or creams? I'm super confused🤪
Hi Penny, can you use a vitamin A product with an LED red light?
Melissa
Basic take away:
I don’t mix AHAs and retinoids (irritating) I don’t mix BHA and retinoids (irritating). If I use vitamin C with retinoids I wait 30 minutes between the 2. Less is more so we don’t irritate the skin as much as possible 💜
Thank you for the detailed information. Very helpful.
I’m so glad to be helpful 💜
Thank you for being here!
Great video! Thank you! You are my favorite skincare person to watch! ❤️
Thank you Amber!! That means so much to me! 💕
Thx, Penny, love this series. Keep them coming. What about using the acids prior to the tretinoin?
Recipe for irritation in my opinion!
Thank you!!
That’s so great to hear!
Thank you for sharing 💕💕💕
Do products list the PH in the ingredients? Sounds like a stupid question but I don't feel like I see it.
No they often don’t. I usually have to either test them myself (ph strips) or google and research to find a ph (often other people have tested products
and will post about it, a valuable resource that I have to confirm but it’s helpful to start!)
Thank you for sharing this!! I’m screen shorting it for future reference!!
❤️
That lip color looks great on you!
Such an informative video! Thank you so much.
Hi Penny. Thank you
I will check them all out! Yes!! 💜💜💜
I am here again to refresh my knowledge 🙂
You look beautiful today. Thanks for the information.
Thank you so much!!
Hi I need a bit of clarification are Retinol and Retinaldehyde also considered retinoids? Also can they be worn during the day? Thanks for all the great information. 🙂
