I believe the criticism for OW2 comes from the fact that OW had already a core audience who was promised and got accustomed to having all content updates for free. Also although loot boxes are usually egregious, OW managed to strike a good balance between to attainability and necessity of the loot boxes. Now in OW everything is more highly monetized and takes a longer time to get, the heroes will be locked behind a battle pass and overall it feels like OW2 is a stepdown in quality of life to OW1. I think the fact that Asmon didn't play alot of OW1 he is not fully getting the hurt of the OW community and is just making assumptions based on other games he experienced.
to me this means that OW1 was no longer worth it to continue that model. its not like OW1 was gaining popularity over time. seemed to me it was losing popularity over time which probably lead to lower revenue
@@stuff4812 That is true. OW1 wasn't really making much of a profit. Unboxing content kinda makes sense as sort of gambling and is still popular in games like CSGO. But OW1 lootboxes died out at some point. They were simply a convenient method of getting random rewards for leveling. Buying them was not required; so people didn't. Then there was the whole Overwatch League - a different way of getting revenue. And there were rumors that Bobby forced OW2 devs to focus more on that instead of the game. I guess it was making some revenue. Still questionable.
IMO they improved the gameplay loop and fucked their customer's wallets with the battlepass. But at least we don't have to fuck with loot box RNG anymore.
i wasnt able to say it on stream, but the major point overwatch players are really disgrunted about, is not only that the cosmetics are now harder to get if at all, they also removed one natural way of progression of the game with the low amount of earnable currency, if 60 per week was actually true. It was a system of lootboxes which is not that great, BUT they werent hard to get and where one major source of replayability outside of enjoying the gameplay itself. the ability to buy lootboxes aside but not dismissed, its like updating WOW, making all mounts that were earnable through drops, instead earnable once every 8 months or through a paid currency. Again it makes sense for cosmetics in a f2p title to be almost entirely paid only, but overwatch wasnt a free game before, the value of play to earn your skin/voicelines etc was at least for me a major part of replayability and element of the game itself. So i can at least understand the perspective of people being mad, because they woke up to a objectively worse experience.
So you play the entire game for the skins only? You dont play it for rank or custom games or with your friends? Only the skins? Thats called an addiction mate.
To me, the Loot Boxes vs Battle Pass argument is complex because it depends on how they're implemented. I could get every skin I wanted by doing the weekly stuff in Overwatch 1. In Overwatch 2, I'll NEED to pay. I prefer battle passes in general, but in this case, not so much.

the thing is zack doesn't understand that people are fine with lootboxes if they are easy to get. I got so many skins on overwatch 1 just by playing, like atleast a box a day. For some reason he can't understand why people are upset that they now have to pay $20 for one skin, when they could get infinitely more skins for free and easier on OW1
@@-viole OW was a good time sink for me on my down time. I barely opened my loot crates and didnt go out of my way to get them (didnt play arcade to get the free 3 weekly crates etc) and I racked up almost 3,000 crates in 4ish years(before blizzard forced opened them). It was definitely beyond easy to get lootcrates to the point that buying them was a moot point. The system they are implementing now is definitely alot worse because its even more of a time sink and there are hero selections that will be time locked/paywalled/season passed. To me at least, this is objectively worse then the previous system.
I think that to. Lets say they they remove all cosmectic and mounts that was ingame before from the next wow expansion . They can only be obtained by buying a extra battlepas that takes ages to farm only by doing certain weekly activities. Think then he will understand.
@@deeco3232 that is true but not for company are they ? See what riot game and other big games company are doing. F2p game with this kind of monitization is more profitable that I won't be surprised if GTA 6 is f2p lmao
I do think it's important to note on the difficulty of esrning free skins that most of their competitors have some form of crafting materials that can earn skins for free, and while still slow, they're much faster than OW. OW removing the boxes completely just means you're gonna feel a lot less progression from leveling, as it seems the only reward you ever get for playing is battle pass xp. This might change with the a hero missions though.
I assume that there is going to be some sort of cosmetic track aligned with each hero's missions, considering how the UI is layed out and what appears to be the long term goals of OW2. But LoL, Apex, even Valorant have some varying amount of cosmetic progression from just gameplay, or they lock the characters so you work towards them, with the progression as is, there's basically nothing to keep a f2p player in the game after they hit the lvl 55 BP for the new character. And that's only every few months.
@@Gloriankithsanus because people want to be rewarded for the things they do and accomplish what youre litterally saying is "why do the olympics give out medals i thought the competing was all they need." people want to feel like for the time they spend doing something is worth it and not just a sink for the sake of being a sink.
@@Gloriankithsanus Even just pragmatically, when you have a market of f2p games as competitive as this, you need reasons to keep them playing your game in the time between content drops as opposed to simply jumping around the 15 different games or sticking with a different game, one of those reasons is rewards for commitment, and in terms of sales i kind of doubt league of legends is losing money (more likely gaining) from having a relatively generous crafting system giving people a fraction of the cosmetics at random.
I think the main and only thing with character acquisition in overwatch vs other games is that in games like League/apex or whatever you can in theory stockpile currency or whatever materials inbetween character releases. And in theory you can get any character the moment they release, and these currencies are just earned from playing. In overwatch the character is behind a paywall or a grind through the battle pass that requires you to play certain ways to complete challenges to eventually get them. And after that Blizzard hasnt made it clear how you'll earn them after the battlepass goes away, though they hinted at more challenges. TLDR: the main issue isn't hat blizzard is asking you earn or unlock characters. Plenty of games do that, I think the main issue is HOW they are asking you to do it and that it seems more hassle than it needs to be.
You don't even have to go that far. Take Blizzard's own (kinda forgotten by them) game Heroes of the Storm. Pretty much the same thing as LoL-you have currency, which you can spend on heroes, who are reasonably easy to save enough money for just by doing daily quests and never paying real money. You also have lootboxes, which you get each time you level up any hero or you can buy them for ingame currency. Lootboxes are there mainly to give you cosmetics since while they can drop heroes, the chance is minimal. And all duplicates that you gain from lootboxes turn into another currency which you can use to buy cosmetics.
asmongold doesn't understand that the primary difference between league and overwatch is that you can swap heroes on the fly, meaning you can counter on the fly. having characters be locked behind a battlepass that takes weeks to grind would put players who don't play as often at a disadvantage. i don't care for cosmetics, im not bothered by the battle pass nor the store. but i absolutely hate that you have to grind to unlock characters in a game of literal rock paper scissors. it's like saying hey you need to play rock paper scissors with just rock and paper 50 times before you unlock the ability to use scissors. (obvious oversimplification but it gets the point across)
So every hero has just one counter? Sorry but this argument is being echoed and making no sense. So a "new" hero is the only hero to counter another older hero. Meaning the older hero was unkillable until this new hero released as there was no counter?
You've got it. If you play OW even semi-seriously, you basically have to by the BattlePass so you can access new heroes. Not only do they act as counters to some comps, new heroes are ALWAYS overpowered, so are themselves meta. This is why it's such a scummy way of monetising the game. But it's not 'gambling' so it's all good apparently.
@@roxstar5088 what i was referring to were heroes who were released and redefined the meta. thankfully that hasn’t happened with the current version as blizz actually tested junkerqueen and sojourn in the beta. if you need examples, brigitte redefined the meta on release and any team comp that wasn’t using her would basically be throwing. same goes for moira albeit to a lesser extent. by putting future heroes in a battlepass you may be fucked if you don’t grind enough depending on the character’s abilities. imagine if brigitte and moira were released using the battlepass method. it’d be a toxic clusterfuck, people would rage just because someone on their team isn’t using brigitte/moira, in turn causing more casual/new players to cause an uproar because they don’t have the time to grind the new heroes out. and that’s not considering what happens if you miss out on unlocking the character via the battlepass, no one really knows how that would play out since blizz hasn’t given much info yet. (correct me if i’m wrong i don’t really keep up with all blizz updates) however, this technically can be avoided if blizz continues to test characters extensively before releasing like what they did with junkerqueen and sojourn. but if not, what i said would be inevitable. and if you’re pressed bout the whole rock paper scissors thing, i’ll address it too. reaper directly counters winston and roadhog. you don’t play reaper, you have to work twice as hard as other DPS characters unless they have the same capabilities of dealing fat burst damage to those tanks (i.e. junkrat). lock reaper behind battlepass, your options are limited. junkrat may work but he’s less consistent than a reaper of the same skill level.
I don't think it's that different from league. league just has more champs so there are more counters and it's more likely that you have one of the counter champs. Also, in league, counters are 100% as important if not more important at all levels of play compared to Overwatch. also, new champion releases are MUCH more punishing in league since they are released in a 1v9 faceroll broken state to encourage buying the champ + skins. only reason it isn't a problem is people don't usually play league "casually", so they likely have essence to spare on the new champ that comes out every 3-4 months.
This is old and they changed this, but I don’t think you should be ignoring the fact that it’s rock paper scissors in the first place. Yeah, characters behind the battle pass is bad, but it shouldn’t be this bad. The issue is that the counterswapping nature that OW2 accelerated caused it to be a much bigger issue than it should’ve been
Feels dirty to kill the first game completely in a attempt to bump numbers up for 2 like they were actually worried people weren’t going to move over and to be fair they were probably right.

what asmon doesnt understand is there was players (im one of them) that just played ow casually and collecting skins was an extra progression path (just like asmon does in WoW) if ow2 was a completely different game and you could still acquire skins from ow1 as before no one would complain. The problem is that they both removed the ow1 skins from being acquirable with just playing, they also made them unreasonably expensive. so if you were working to get a skin before ow2 launched and you couldnt get it in time you can never get that skin without paying extra money. if skins from ow1 was a lot cheaper or there was still a currency that you gain to unlock a skin every now and then people wouldnt feel robbed.
Easy solution to this. Don't buy the skins you don't need to. Play the game for what it is. I played OW1 I collected skins, but first and foremost I played the game because it was fun
@@Skyunai you dont understand either... Thats not a solution. For those people game has lost half of its content. I'm not even gonna play it im just explaining why people are mad...
41:30 real L-Take by Asmon here im sorry to say. While the basic model of the games of league of legends and overwatch are very similiar there are two main differences: 1. there are far more champions in league, so its logical that the number of cahmpions you have not unlocked is not that significant as in overwatch, where there are far less characters in total. 2. To compare the counter picking in overwatch and league of legends is absolut non sense, while it exists in both games, in overwatch its far more fluent, because you can change heroes mid game. At the end let there be said that i dont know how they will continue the model, it would be fair that the new heroes get automatically unlocked after the season. Since they are only playable in non competitive modes it would not hurt the game and the players who grinded or bought the champions can just play them sooner. ANything else hurts the game deeply
@@Wolta I mean, what @twizzm said is kinda true. We aren't saying Xqc isn't smart or anything. He just... try to entertain for the most part a younger audiance. At least that's my understanding. I'm 27 and i could never take his stream seriously.
the difference in league is, that you will get the ressource u need for new champs just by playing and can hoard it, so you can unlock the new champ the instant they come out, while in overwatch, you have to play a ton after the hero has already come out.
I think I agree that league's system is better for the hardcore audience, but it's not clearcut. I also think OW2's system might actually be superior for casual players. OW2: Casual players might miss some new heroes, because they won't put enough time into every battlepass to unlock champs. It remains to be seen how we will unlock heroes after their battlepass ends, but they've suggested challenges. That sounds very new player friendly to me, especially for players who join the game a few years after launch. Hardcore f2p players are annoyed, because the people who pay will unlock heroes a little before they can. They are stuck with the fact that a person who pays for the battlepass unlocks will always have a headstart on getting to use the new characters before them. LoL: Casual players generally won't earn enough to get every champ. Champs are always available in the shop, and the in-game currency prices for older champs gets reduced over time, so you can pick up champs you like eventually, but there's also a massive backlog to work through. A casual player who starts playing league today will *never* have all the champs, unless they bust out their wallet. Hardcore f2p players like it, because they have stockpiles of the in-game currency stored up, and can easily buy every champ as it comes out, and even earn extra ontop to eventually unlock their backlog of champs.
I think the issue is that they took away the progression path of OW1 which people paid for. And replaced it with a cash shop. Meaning they removed content people already paid for (but not yet collected in game), and put it behind a paywall.
But nobody's skin got stolen from their account and held hostage for 20$. Sure, old skins will be held behind a paywall now, but it does not affect any single soul on the personal level. If you got the skin in OW1, you keep it; and the previous system was so generous that if you haven't obtained an event skin, that particular skin was not on your priority list in the first place. The argument that all the skins created since the release are your property that you have yet to collect (5Head moment) because you've bought the game in 2016 is so absurd. Following your train of thought it's suprising you haven't gone all Travis from Taxi Driver on Blizzard HQ when they released Pink Mercy.
While I understand his side for the positives of removing lootboxes and replacing with the challenges and battle pass. The fact that the way you gotta grind 8 months for a skin worth 1/3 the price of a triple a game is ridiculous imo. And just waving off the that criticism allows Blizzard to move the goal post even further.
But it doesn't matter does it, you don't need skins to play the game do you? No I don't think so I played the shit out of overwatch 1 lost my account and I didn't cry over my missing skins, it doesn't fuckin matter, it's a free game, they have to monetize somehow to keep it going, I don't agree with shutting down OW1 servers but hey whatever. It's not like cosmetics change anything
@@Skyunai Cosmetics matter to alot of people. More then it should for sure but that is the reality. Blizz is clearly trying to get cash from that subsection of the player base.
Yup, the current state of OW1(a paid for game) got taken away and also the cosmetics players haven't gotten yet got put behind a long grind or a paywall. Some skins even got removed and I assume will eventually be brought back through the stupid shop. This "update" took a game you paid for, added a wall of grind to everything and made the game less optimized.
i dont think he's wrong. the root of his opinions is the fact that he doesn't care about the skin. Wow, asmon keeps saying people do mental gymnastics to be outraged at blizzard, but his mental gymnastics in defending fomo hero locked battlepasses is olympic level.
I just can't help but feel disappointment from the part in Seagull's video where he describes that Blizzard essentially had the option to hold out and release the game all as one big box game with PVE included but they decided to go with the model that other games use which is live service free 2 play pay for skins. It just feels to me that the overwatch community was barely holding on while overwatch bled to death because we were told that all their development energy was going into a brand new overwatch. Realistically, I know that this game came out in 2016 and I have put thousands of amazing hours into it and it's okay for a game to become old and die. It's just hard not to get excited when you hear that overwatch 2 comes out October 4th, the game that they were hyping several years ago and the source of why overwatch has been neglected. What exactly have they been doing for the past three years that this is the new product that they are pushing? I understand that they are switching models to become live service with more constant updates but how did it take three years to transition. Also, what will these live service updates even look like? We had updates, new maps, new heroes, and seasonal events with dumb little PVE scenarios already in the previous game. Does this change mean that the updates are going to be faster and better because people can now buy a 20 dollar skin? I am skeptical and feel like the big PVE update is going to be three maps where you run through kings row shooting some robots just like the event that we already had. And then 6 months later they will release a new small section of map where you shoot some robots and there's your live service right there, the exact same thing we already had before they quit updating to develop overwatch 2. Meanwhile, they will be popping out nonstop 20 dollar skins the whole time to lure players along with another battle pass because "It's now season 38 instead of 37", so you have to purchase a new battle pass if you want legitimate rewards. It's really just disappointment in the industry of online gaming as a whole that has me feeling bad and overwatch is simply the latest domino to fall.
You've hit the nail on the head. OW2 is an OW patch with new monetisation. That's it. The PvE mode is endlessly delayed and they release zero details about it, but have notably shifted the language they use to describe it. It now sounds exactly like they're going to drip-feed us standalone levels and abandon the endgame progression, presumably because they've never worked out how to make it meaningfully replayable. It's indefensibly poor for Blizz and that's not even getting to how egregious the monetisation is. I could care less about skins but heroes behind a paywall?? How people can defend it I'll never know.
@Patridge that sucks lol i really have lost all faith in blizzard sadly i will get d4 just bc i love diablo ;( to what play it for maybe a year hate what they are doing to that game too
The problem with Asmon's "it's free now" argument is that it had no effect on those who already owned it. They had access already. The old system allowed people to earn enough currency to unlock everything(skins, intro, sprays, etc.) that released after the price of purchase by just playing. So it turning into unlock a skin after 8 months with the same amount of play is only a net negative, and a big one.
I think the issue people have is more around the game getting worse. Before the update, you could do a few games and get a lootbox. That lootbox had a reasonable chance at giving you a legendary skin. In a single play session, you could unlock multiple legendary skins just for playing the game. So for those that owned the game previously, their experience has just gotten worse with no upside. From a free to play perspective, it makes perfect sense, although the rate of acquisition seems a bit low if you ask me. The issue is the transition. Similar to how BFA felt bad after losing our artifact weapons and legendaries, in addition to putting major cooldowns on the gcd. There wasn't anything necessarily wrong with classes in BFA, but it feels bad because it was better before the change.
although i don't like that ow skins are only obtainable with real money, i do think you're doing it wrong if you play multiplayer shooters for cosmetics. mmos fill the work-reward gap much better.
what asmon is missing about the grinding for skins thing is that in overwatch you used to be able to grind your daily wins which gave you lootboxes. now lootboxes are usually not a good thing but in the old overwatch they would sometimes also drop the in game currency which then allowed you to unlock more skins. you were able to grind those challenges and honestly unlock quite a few nice skins without paying any money the game would in my opinion unironically better if you had to pay money to play the game and keep the old lootbox system
@@Exitium93 Overwatch 1, the one that just changed to Overwatch 2 has always been free. Came out in like 2016 or w/e it's always been free. They made their money by selling the boxes for skin.. now it's the Battle Pass and other stuff people will spend money on intead.

Asmon has a bunch of bad takes on this one: - The Box price was so low that it did cost 10$ (Didn't stop people from cheating in PUBG) - Inserting a Phone number to troll a streamer is an entirely different mindset to someone who wants to cheat, the barrier is entirely different - The anti-cheat and amount of cease and desist letters Blizzard has send to OW Cheat Devs is crazy hence why there were almost 0 cheaters So yeah, since you haven't played the game or were part of the community you probably don't know much about that.
The active phone number thing is not anti-cheating, because - as you say - there are almost zero cheaters in OW. They do occur but compare to every other online PC shooter, it is not a problem at all. Asmon simply doesn't play OW so doesn't get it.
The difference of a 60 buck retail game, as much as lootboxes sucked in OW1. The grind wasn't face-melting to unlock stuff for free. I just don't see the same effort of a complete game here.

The issue people are having with the new monitization update is that yes the game had loot boxes but if you played the game for a day you would see how many loot boxes you got and how often it was and realize that you would never have to purchase a set of loot boxes for skins so by taking that away and making skins only purchable with real money instead of the coins that you got out of the loot boxes and loot boxes themselves, that’s what people are upset about
Nah on this I agree with Asmon, of course it was different before, it wasn’t free to play. There simply isn’t a good way mostly keep the monetization as it was if now they can only make money from skins and the battlepass

Asmond, I think the issue is that people want to go back to the old ways, like spending $60 upfront, and are able to get everything in the game and not have anything behind a paywall. The game companies are taking two steps forward and one step back. OW2 is the pinnacle of shedding light on this. People would rather have the loot boxes back instead of this monetization scheme; so now, loot boxes won’t be seen as that bad
as things go forwards it slikely games will eitehr be free and heavily monetized or cast more than 60 dollars in the future and still have monetization
I was looking at the reviews, and people are mad about the time it’ll take for skins, and would rather have loot boxes. I personally don’t care, but I would rather go back to paying upfront instead of Diablo Immortal levels of predatory. Even if it has to go up to $90 for a game

You didn't get loot boxes and skins for free. If you don't remember I'll help you , You paid for it. You paid 40$ for the whole things. Lootbox is generally a bad things and As time goes on more and more countries are starting to ban lootboxes.

The difference between the acquisition method for both game is that one gives you currency for playing a game any way you want. The other only gives you currency from doing random challenges with a cap that may or may not force you to play a different play style. Also League gives you random loot boxes for reaching specific levels and it's also a free to play game with a battle pass. So to say that they're both the same is true but one is less greedy than the other.
lol but what's your point? in dota2 you can play all heroes for free since the game was out. Seriously? you need to pay or grind to play a hero in League? I wonder why people are not furious about this greedy monetization model. Maybe asmon is right?
Because we who play League have bigger worries and concerns in the case of balance and server stability, instead of caring about how that new 25$ Lux skin looks
Difference being league showers you with blue essence and skin shards, any character u might want is within reach of couple games, if u start playing ow2 next season ure prolly gonna play for 10 months just to unlock a character from one of the previous seasons
I think the reason LOL gets away with it is because LOL gives you plenty of opportunities to get the blue essence necessary to buy champions. Every level up gives you something, everything 10 levels gives you a champion lootbox and almost all items can be converted to essense so long as you haven't used it.
same shit with ow's lootboxes. Asmon is blindsided by his anti-lootbox crusade that he refuses to see how ow's lootboxes actually work. Man says "It's fucking free" while laughing at "8months to grind a legendary skin".
That's true but you need to keep in mind that league have wayyy more characters than OW. So ofc it's should be easier. You could look at apex legend. Its thee same as league but harder to obtain new characters because apex have way lower characters to obtain.
@@-viole number of characters shouldnt change ease of access thats silly also again OW is based around the idea of counter picking and mid round changes of characters to beat other units especially in OW where characters are litterally designed around counter playing other characters.
@@logankent5865 I started playing overwatch for the first time yesterday and I almost unlock every character. The remaining are echo and kiriko. Tell me a game where you can obtain 90% of the characters in 2 days.
The really bad thing about OW is, that they updated the game to sell the ogs a battle pass and lock skins which you could get free behind a paywall. There is not so much new, that you can say it's a completely new game. They took us the possibility to buy skins through playing and now they hide them behind a paywall. They did this after not updating the game for more than one year with a new hero. Actually it's not Ow2 ist more Ow1.2
I agree with most of what you're saying about OW2 minus the prepaid phone bit. I have quite a few friends who pay for prepaid phone plans. Them being punished without a way around is a bit ridiculous. I 100% agree having more measures to prevent cheating is absolutely a great thing. I think there just needs to be a better system in place. (Also Blizzard pulled back the sms requirement for anyone who owned the game prior to OW2).
Yeah not saying I'm important but it sucks that despite everything you will give it a chance and comeback to overwatch. Only for them to knowingly block a good chunk of people out because they don't have a specific type of phone number. If they did this on purpose and don't want people like me playing their game fuck em
@@jetseal8437 it's not a phone its a phone plan, a continuous subscription over years, if u already have benefits with your current provider why the fuck would u switch just cause of ow2 ? Have all your acquaintances inconvenienced cause u want to play a game ? Nobody is gonna do that
I didn’t even know you could buy loot boxes in Overwatch 1. I just got them and unlocked all the skins for free. This new system is worse imo but I’m not going to be too mad about it as long as I can play the game for free (if hero unlocks are paywalled then that’s going to be a big problem)
Look at it like this. You really enjoy obtaining mounts through WoW by completing various in game things but all of a sudden the ONLY way to obtain mounts now is buy buying them or being able to obtain 1 free mount per year.
1:45 “But what does that really mean?” That means you end up with matches where you can go minutes at a time without anybody dying or losing ground to the opponent.
Asmon should apply his logic for "Why are you so pissed off about a skin taking 8 months to unlock... Why are you so angry it costs money, that's how developers make their money." logic to WoW store mounts. Apart from a sub fee, it's exactly the same... but with Battlepass you could argue that OW has a "sub" fee too.
The difference is that you HAVE to pay to play WoW, no matter what. Considering what you get in other games like ff14, where the shop gives you way more value for your money or f2p mmo's that are relying completely on their store, store mounts are overpriced and dumb.
I can't wrap my head around the fact that the same developer capable of running WOW, can't make a server that can handle the overwatch 2 launch. How is that even possible? It's ridiculous that they waited this long to make a sequel, and then force the players to wait in a queue to even get to the main menu, only to see hardly any new content.
Actually Nothing weird, EVERY Blizzard game, which is connected to the online is Unplayable in their first days, or you have LONG Queues - Diablo 3, Legion, BFA, Shadowlands, Overwatch 1 / "2"

My biggest issue is that they completely deleted OW1.. i want the option to still play OW1 if i dont like the new changes in OW2. Its still free to the new players. That seems fair to me.
The thing about locking characters behind a paywall is that in the entire history of overwatch there has always been a character that is significantly stronger than every other character. I was forced to play mercy every single game during the moth meta because if you didn't have a mercy on your team you just lost, "GG go next" kind of overpowered and it lasted for months. Now imagine if that character was locked behind a paywall _in a fucking esports title_! I don't give a shit about skins but having an advantage over others in a competitive game because you paid for it is absolutely unforgivable
Imagine looking at a game that makes you play for 4 weeks with the only reward being a "skin" that's really just a recolor of a character model and your only defense for that is "at least it's not a lootbox"
I think my major issue with the BP and heroes being locked behind it, is that blizzard stated only the cosmetics would be locked behind a paywall. I feel putting a hero on tier 55 for the free pass vs tier 1 (wich is basically an instant unlock) for the paid battlepass is just some grade A bullshit.
This is false, Blizzard did not say such a thing for Overwatch. Asmongold already went over this before in another video/stream. Blizzard said that for Diablo's battlepass, NOT Overwatch. I pulled up and read the OW dev article to be sure before posting this.
I’m ok with the characters being locked behind a battlepass. Other games do the similar things like crafting but takes much longer in those other games compared to Overwatch.
Blizzard's motto used to be "its ready when its ready". Now its "play it pay pigs". EDIT: Asmon at the end says "why are people mad at blizzard when other games are like this". Some of us are old enough to remember having the sentiment "Blizzard would never do this to their players". That era is so long gone.
@@fish5645 yeah and that why it's so shocking that asmon is straight up lying or misremebering the past for reasons that aren't clear. If he wants to defend his favorite game company devoid of the companies history that's his own prerogative. If you want to consider blizzard is "just another triple a company" now that's your own business. But the company is shit now, and has been since Activision bought the company.
@Zahdorfi xG this. this right here. played d2 and sc1 and sc2 and blizzard could do no wrong in my eyes. i automatically bought d3 just based on my d2 experience. i remember the pain of being a witch doctor day 1.
Back 20 years ago games were around 50$ which was expensive for its time, but then you actually got a completed AAA "finished" game. You have to take in to account back then preorders and live services weren't a thing like today (only MMOs later on), if you bought the game you bought the game cover too which added money in to the production. Its mostly a logistics thing and today there are far more gamers than 20 years ago which is why they can afford selling games at a cheaper price (depends where you buy games). Digital shops pretty much eliminates the reason to operate gaming shops (like gamestop, etc), which just means the only thing you pay for is the expenses of creating the games and online services.
5:43 I'm one of those people. Bought Overwatch 1 years ago and only have 22 hours of gameplay, but I still love the universe, the game, fps games and mostly the characters. But I'm not into competitive things, I like to play at my own pace and pvp games will punish you if you don't perform properly.
Yeah I played it when it came out with my little brothers but now I'm grown & don't really have time to play competitive FPS aka do the same thing over & over to gain rank, etc. So I'd hoped OW2 would have PvE content & other modes I could play with my brothers when I see them at holidays
As of late Ive been getting the feeling that Asmongold has redpilled himself all the way into taking the blue pill. He’s so “ahead of the logic” that all of this is excusable and actually great in the end. Yeah, you can contort all these actions and intentions to the point of making it seem like Blizz is coming around. But just remember: its a sequel with more effort in the cash shop than the game. And the pve section being released later means that this game was actually released half finished. And hiding that fact behind the multiplayer is f2p (like halo was) is naive. Blizz isnt making it f2p because they love us players; Diablo Immortals was f2p, and the companies consumer psychology data is no doubt being watermarked onto all their products. But sure. Keep playing the role of stupid consumer. Buy, buy, buy. Isnt life great?
They're trying to fund the game and you're over here talking about whether or not they love you. You're so up in your emotions that you lost touch with the reality of the discussion.
Blizzard fans in 2022 have no backbone, its like them naming their thing "Free hong kong" while actively giving money and attention to the people they supposedly have an issue with.
I do wonder what Asmon would say if it took over 10 months just to unlock one mount. I don't like any game doing it for that long and makes the pay market the only reasonable choice.
i mean surely the solution to the monetisation loot boxes thing is surely to keep loot boxes but not let you buy them, you earn them by completing your daily challenges or weekly challenges, and then on top of that you also can buy the skins separately, that keeps the incentive to keep playing that blizzard likes, keeps the lootboxes that people like, and also lets people buy things individually
42:51 You can change heroes during game and when some people can get new heroes and some don;t then it's pay to win ? It's huge difference. In lol you choose cahmp once at the beginning. In overwatch you change champions based on opponent's team
51:15 They made it, and I'm not even using this for the meme, ~800% harder to get skins. In OW1 you could get any skin with enough patience because you got a good amount of currency and random skins from just leveling and playing the game naturally. But in OW2? Better pick your favorite Character and skins now, cause you ain't getting another unless you're willing to put up another two thirds of a year for it or else you'd best pony up that credit card. Oh, but don't even bother getting hyped for new characters, cause you'll never be getting any of their skins either unless you're willing to bank on that and not spend on any other cool skins. If "800% Value" is a bad deal in Diablo Immortal, *Which is Also Free,* then Why is "800% Value" also NOT a bad deal in Overwatch 2?
I am not mad about other games doing bs because i dont play them. I did play OW and they went and pulled some bs. So now I dont play it. It is very simple to understand.
People are upset (quite reasonably so) because the avenue for obtaining the skins through in-game means in Overwatch 1 was much quicker and easier than it is in Overwatch 2 despite them removing loot boxes. My guess as to why they even removed loot boxes in the first place is that because players generally considered buying loot boxes to be a complete waste of money, Blizzard figured that they’d make more money if they just removed them altogether and made purchasing the skins with real money more straightforward.
I think the real reason OW1 players are mad is because in OW1 you can obtain every skin/voiceline/cosmetic in the game just by playing regularly. This was one of the primary sources of motivation for people to keep playing the game. Now OW1 is gone and moved to OW2. People wake up to the game they paid money for becoming free-to-play, and their ability to EARN skins is gone along with their motivation. It's like how people care more about a mount it took them a week to earn compared to one you can just buy. Can you blame them for being upset?
The sad part is. My account is eligible for the Founder's Pack.. I am playing on PC, so I didn't even needed to merge my account (so merge errors excluded). And yet I received nothing, even that they managed to fuck up. I have no clue how a company can fuck up checking the history of purchases of a product pre-June 2022 in the same account a game is launched. Just, how, can you fuck up a simple database query and setting a flag from 0 -> 1. Unreal.
The problem is, all of OW1's skins are still in the game, and cost the same 1900 currency. In overwatch one, you could easily easily easily get all skins from just casually playing - and then event ones with the saved up dupe currency from just having everything. The "lootboxes" in OW2 weren't really lootboxes, they were a steady supply of exchangable currency to get new skins. That's why you see so so so many streamers with like, what, thousands of lootboxes sitting around? That's cause they already had everything. Now imagine you played overwatch in the primetime, then dropped it. You're missing hundreds of cosmetics, and probably a hundred legendary skins. And now, instead of getting them completely for free, pretty quickly, by just playing, you have to spend at least 4 months grinding, and HOPE they show up in the rotating weekly shop where you get one, or two, old legendaries randomly.
I think you may have missed the part where it's an unrealistic approach to think that you can just get new content all the time without further investment into the system. It's just not feasible in any sense. The model had to change or the game dies. Simple as that.
@@TripleFisted who's talking about new content? I'm talking about old content I could've consistently gotten for free, that now is not only paid for, with no good humanly possible way to get - but also HEAVILY timegated FOMO with an RNG rotation, that will force you to spend not to miss the one chance you have to have it. The new system is poor as shit, too, though. As I said. It's a battle pass for what is the same, or if I'm not wrong, slightly higher price than other dimilar passes on the market - with fewer rewards, NO free currency that you can spend to buy the next bpass or cosmetics, and a bit under 2 months when most usually go for 3~. It'd be all fine and dandy there, but there's also a paid only direct shop for new skins that aren't in the pass to supplement it, making the chances of "earning" old skins even worse. I'd rather pay a monthly fee for Overwatch, especially with the upcoming PvE mode and any hopes for its continued content campaigns and progression if it will be anything like a diablo-ish Destiny looter shooter, or whatever kind of rpg threadmill they plan. But don't let blizzard hear that, they'll happily add a sub fee too, and the box price, and bi-yearly pve expansions at full price, and then also keep the battle pass and cash shop and strip down earnable cosmetics further.
@@AlexWaff @Alex Waff purely objective here, but why are you holding Blizzard to an unreasonable standard of keeping their old content available? You had 6 years to play the game casually and earn the old skins for free, but now that the model has changed, which Blizzard has every right to do, you feel ripped off? Additionally, the game is now free to play and you can still earn skins without paying any money, but because you don't like it, it makes them wrong? I fail to see how the elimination of gambling loot boxes and the addition of a cash shop to straight purchase the skin (no gambling involved -- you pay x, you get y) is anything but a W
Might I add that they're just skins. Zero effect on gameplay. I'm not sure you even listened to a damn word that Asmon said in this entire video. You're sitting here saying "I can't get my skins for free anymore" But yes, you can, because the game is free to play and you can earn in game credits...for free! Sure it takes a while and yes they rotate, but that does not objectively change the fact that you can still earn skins without paying.
Blizzard: "We want all people to transfer to Overwatch 2 so we don't have a split-up community". Also Blizzard: You have to pay for early acces powerful new heroes.
so this question has probably been asked a thousand times, but i gotta ask. is there anything in overwatch 2 that couldn't just be patched in to overwatch one?
@@Thejigholeman yeah I mean even their idea of a pve mode could’ve, they’ve already been doing it in OW with holidays. Its funny that from 36:32 onwards, we're having an argument about SKINS... *SKINS* . This itself is pretty ridiculous IMO. Skins are completely optional, and people get salty over this? Childish if you ask me.
The difference between Overwatch 1 and WoW subscription is, that I didn't sign up for a subscription when buying Overwatch. I bough a full game for $45 and it was decided for me that I no longer have access because it's more profitable to take it away and force me into shitty f2p model with queues, if I want to play the game I paid for.
It really freak me out that he said "i'd rather have no rewards + all kinds of aquireable items highly priced than Lootboxes that drop multiple items are gained every level up jut can be bought extra" The battle pass additionally sucks. The skins suck and the progression does too. I hate a battle pass close to always over the kind of lootbox that OW1 had. In general the question is: Was OW1 better in monetization than OW2? And 99% of people'll say yes it was way better than OW2.
32:47 This is because Asmon is used to eating whatever s*** falls out of Blizzard's ass. LOL, the guy has accepted the WOW token, crafting being P2W because of the WOW token, and his prized mounts turning into P2W as well as a collector. OW2 changing the balance and selling teh game piece meal back to Asmon doesn't raise much of an eye brow to him. He's been through worse. There is no way PvE game lasts over 1 year without losing 90% of player base and having only few dedicated players who aren't enough to keep servers up.
Doom 1 and 2's playerbase is basically 95% people playing by themselves and is still decently sized. Tons still play it, you just don't see any news articles about it because it conflicts with pro-AAA narratives. If the PvE is actually good, people keep playing it, if it's not, people drop off. There's literally no reason people can't still have fun after the first playthrough, let alone the 10th. Unless the fun isn't fun and more just people chasing unfamiliarity than actually having fun.
also if asmon played league hed understand that LoL gives champions on free week all the time as well as free i think the first two weeks after coming out, which makes it a lot easier. and champions are easier than ever to unlock since they went to blue essence and had all the coupons every single level
I'm personally wondering if when the new pve story thing comes out every season for OW if they are going to keep it in the game after the season ends. Say you don't play for a season and miss the story content, can you just play that past season story in the new season before playing the new season story? Or is it gonna be a destiny 2 thing where you have to play during the season to experience the story and if you miss that season you're poop out of luck since they are removing it at the end of the season? If its the former, I'd consider downloading and paying for a season once the complete story comes out and do it all in one session. If its the latter, guess I'll just rely on youtube videos and never download OW2.
I think the outrage with Overwatch 2 is different because the skins were previously cheaper to get and the price increased compared to other games that just have expensive skins. I think people do not like that they are losing the ability to get skins and I think this feeling is stronger than never being able to obtain them in the first place. I think people are more mad about Overwatch 2 because its the difference between losing something and never having it to begin with.
Overwatch 2 should have just been a new released game with a price, syncing your battle net would have transferred everything over. Free to play is ruining gaming
I used to play swtor, and i bought the collector's edition. I don't recall having an issue when the game went f2p. They did also give people some shop coins, based on the version they bought
He’s right about the comparison to League. It only doesn’t effect people like me who already have all the champions. So whenever they release a new one I have so much blue essence stacked up from having nothing to use it on that I can just get the champion with in-game currency
not really, in league you can get a free skin each week and a new hero in a couple of days, meanwhile 8 months for a skin and no idea on how long for a new hero.
I remember playing the game back when it took forever to earn enough currency to even unlock 1 hero, and then the skins were never accessible to free to play.
@@zeri3889 That's a really disingenuous way to represent the orange essence system, it takes way more than a week overall because you have to grind down your "free skins" for essence first. There's no way to consistently get one every week, and they're full random from a pool of over a thousand. But it's a free to play game, so you should really just get over it. The skins are how they fund the game and the upset people aren't offering realistic alternatives.
OW2 should have been a patch to keep people interested while they develop the full game. With that said, this patch should have been what 2-3 patches would look like in OW1, but i gues abandoning the game and never releasing content to make a sequel without content was more important
The difference between buying a game like Overwatch and Wow is that WoW you know the game is going to change. WoW is expected to change per new DLC. If they changed a game like Starcraft and took out 1v1 and the main game became 2v2 only, it would upset a lot of people because that game is not expected to change its formula especially if its been a certain way for years. Its also not a bad thing to be upset about taking months getting skin when that's a fun feature of the game. It should definitely cost money, but having a rewarding use of "coins" in a game you can use more often than monthly of hard grinding would be a big plus for any game.
35:45 ... In a shooter game the only thing that you can earn and is meaningfull are skins. Witouth them it will become very boring very quickly, because it's just the same thing over and over. Yes they took out the loot boxes but the new system is arguably worse since now there is no getting around it. You esentaly NEED to pay for a skin, because your hard work means nothing. In the old system you COULD get lucky at least. Now it's not even that.
I will say this about the whole phone thing. I understand the reasoning for it but as one of 10 million people who use cricket who also has had no other issues with games/services using my number for verification outside of ow2, it's very annoying that I literally can't even play the game at all. Like ranked mode I understand to a degree but to not even be able to log in to the game is insane to me all bc I chose a phone provider that gives me more flexibility with my service and not being locked down by a multi year contract. There's probably going to be a lot of people similar to me that hadn't played ow1 in years and just wanted to give ow2 a try that will never be able to and if there is ever a work around about it I'm not sure that they'll even care anymore by the time that happens. Edit: I just thought about this so I'll add it here as well. The difference between a game like league and ow2 in terms of their monetization is that in league you get a ton of in game currency just by playing the game and that can be used to get every single champion in the game if you so choose or you can save it for when a new champion comes out. You never have to spend money to get a champion if you don't want to. You can even do it with skins to a degree though it's a lot harder bc you have to get lucky with how skin shards work. Also league's shop isn't a rotating one. You can buy every single skin in the game whenever you want and from what I understand ow2 shop is a rotating shop along with the extra hardships of trying to get a skin in game.
well according to asmon you should just sell more weed so youre not such a poor and buy a real 50 dollar a month or more phone plan gosh dude. in all seriousness though I hate it for you and other people who saw a free to play game and were like "hey a game i can play and dont have to spend money on!" and were told hey sucks to be poor by blizzard.
@@logankent5865 Trueeee lmao the thing is at least for me it's not even about being poor anymore. It’s far too early to announce that overpatch 2 is so much better and solved problems from the first game,it’s ridiculous really to say that when meta isn’t even established yet. It’s also worth pointing out the “one tank per team” mechanic,it creates even more problems, how long until players figure out few best tanks and the whole team will bitch about you not using the meta pick, then it will begin the sh*t show called “balancing” by blizzard,so pretty much nothing changed.
@@Blowfish_homicide yeah pretty much,I’m baffled how blizzard doesn’t see a problem with 1/3 of characters (tanks) in the game competing for a single spot on a team, that pretty much requires shields.
To the league point, there are way more characters in that game, and many of them can fit a specific role, so multiple Champs can counter multiple other Champs, plus many of the Champs you can get for free or extremely cheap with in game currency. I don't know how it works in OW2, but it seems they lock heroes behind a battle passes and things like that right? So it ends up being better in League in my opinion
In league of legends a newly released champion is unlocked for free for a week , after 1-2 weeks (can't remember if it's 1 or 2 as I stopped playing a few years ago) after it's release generally. It's initial costs 7800ip and then goes down to 6300 after a week.
amsongold was out of pocket on this one, he contradicted himself multiple times. He hardly played the base game so he cant comprehend that the base game for 40$ and infinite lootboxes is better than 40$ for two skins. It made you feel special, it also nuked the OW1 servers completely revamping the business model that people had already paid and committed to it is a re-arrangement of the deal. Its like in WOW if they suddenly made it F2P then made all mounts unobtainable through grinding and you had to do weeklies to advance a battle pass to obtain them. Like yeah, it brings in new players but it sews mistrust in your loyal fans. It also takes away all merit of obtaining those skins, makes you feel less special and is honestly a half baked scheme to get more money out of consumers. Just because other games do it doesn't justify every game doing it, you should know that Asmon. You use to advocate for it, I guess too many Gatcha games that your subs pay you to play has gone to your head buddy.
heres the thing that i think about the taking the lootboxes out its a bad thing because for 1 in league they have lootboxes and it lets you get skins for free without having to pay you have options to get the skin you want or get a random skin it would work well in ow2 and thats what they needed is to have an option to buy the skin itself rather than only rolling them
@28:40 Yes, you literally only earn 60 coins a week IF you finish all of your weeklies which equates to $0.60 cents of value. You can't even buy a single SPRAY which cost 100 coins if you finish your weeklies. While I'm having fun with the game, and their premium prices are relatively similar to other games with a similar model, the fact that there's no way to grind anything for free within a reasonable amount of time especially with committing time to the game is just atrocious.
I feel like with how the game is right now I think they should bring back loot boxes but you can't buy them only earn them through leveling and playing game. Like get a loot box for completing the weekly challenges and if you want a specific skin you can buy it or grind coins for them.
Him defending the phone verification is such an L take. I'd rather take my chances with cheaters than be forced to verify my phone number with Blizzard. There's plenty of free games that have anti-cheat that don't require this. And then to entirely dismiss the fact that players who previously were able to play the game and now can't because of this is just asinine.
@@An.Unsought.Thought I doubt it would be anything THAT drastic, but it's certainly a trend in the wrong direction. I, admittedly don't, and have not, play(ed) a significant amount of Overwatch, but have friends who play regularly and have never heard complaints of rampant cheating, which COULD have something to do with Overwatch 1 being a pay to play title. However, Blizzard hasn't exactly been deserving of people's trust in recent years, so I'm hesitant to provide them with more information than necessary.
100%
to me this means that OW1 was no longer worth it to continue that model. its not like OW1 was gaining popularity over time. seemed to me it was losing popularity over time which probably lead to lower revenue
fk lootboxes though.

If wow went F2P and people just had to pay for mount skins it'd be an infinitely better game.

OW was a good time sink for me on my down time.

Why do you need rewards for playing anyway. I thought playing the game is the fun part? If not, just quit it.
@@Gloriankithsanus because people want to be rewarded for the things they do and accomplish what youre litterally saying is "why do the olympics give out medals i thought the competing was all they need." people want to feel like for the time they spend doing something is worth it and not just a sink for the sake of being a sink.
@@Gloriankithsanus dude that's the stupidest shit i've read in youtube all week.
(correct me if i’m wrong i don’t really keep up with all blizz updates)
however, this technically can be avoided if blizz continues to test characters extensively before releasing like what they did with junkerqueen and sojourn. but if not, what i said would be inevitable.
and if you’re pressed bout the whole rock paper scissors thing, i’ll address it too. reaper directly counters winston and roadhog. you don’t play reaper, you have to work twice as hard as other DPS characters unless they have the same capabilities of dealing fat burst damage to those tanks (i.e. junkrat). lock reaper behind battlepass, your options are limited. junkrat may work but he’s less consistent than a reaper of the same skill level.
The issue is that the counterswapping nature that OW2 accelerated caused it to be a much bigger issue than it should’ve been

what asmon doesnt understand is there was players (im one of them) that just played ow casually and collecting skins was an extra progression path (just like asmon does in WoW) if ow2 was a completely different game and you could still acquire skins from ow1 as before no one would complain.

ANything else hurts the game deeply

the difference in league is, that you will get the ressource u need for new champs just by playing and can hoard it, so you can unlock the new champ the instant they come out, while in overwatch, you have to play a ton after the hero has already come out.
I think I agree that league's system is better for the hardcore audience, but it's not clearcut. I also think OW2's system might actually be superior for casual players.
OW2:
Casual players might miss some new heroes, because they won't put enough time into every battlepass to unlock champs.
LoL:
Casual players generally won't earn enough to get every champ.

Sequel: same game with new monetization.

True and wise
although i don't like that ow skins are only obtainable with real money, i do think you're doing it wrong if you play multiplayer shooters for cosmetics. mmos fill the work-reward gap much better.
what asmon is missing about the grinding for skins thing is that in overwatch you used to be able to grind your daily wins which gave you lootboxes. now lootboxes are usually not a good thing but in the old overwatch they would sometimes also drop the in game currency which then allowed you to unlock more skins. you were able to grind those challenges and honestly unlock quite a few nice skins without paying any money

The difference between the acquisition method for both game is that one gives you currency for playing a game any way you want. Look at it like this. You really enjoy obtaining mounts through WoW by completing various in game things but all of a sudden the ONLY way to obtain mounts now is buy buying them or being able to obtain 1 free mount per year.
1:45 “But what does that really mean?”
That means you end up with matches where you can go minutes at a time without anybody dying or losing ground to the opponent.
It's not the same at all lmao. WoW has a monthly fee and OW doesn't, end of discussion.

I can't wrap my head around the fact that the same developer capable of running WOW, can't make a server that can handle the overwatch 2 launch. How is that even possible? The thing about locking characters behind a paywall is that in the entire history of overwatch there has always been a character that is significantly stronger than every other character. I was forced to play mercy every single game during the moth meta because if you didn't have a mercy on your team you just lost, "GG go next" kind of overpowered and it lasted for months.
Now imagine if that character was locked behind a paywall _in a fucking esports title_!

I think my major issue with the BP and heroes being locked behind it, is that blizzard stated only the cosmetics would be locked behind a paywall.
What do you mean pre-orders weren't a thing like today? I used to pre-order n64 games what you mean?

You're so up in your emotions that you lost touch with the reality of the discussion.

idk who you are but i just wanna say i love you lol
Unreal.
@@Sephiroso. It isn't complicated either, and I'm a software designer. It's literally a one man job.
But don't let blizzard hear that, they'll happily add a sub fee too, and the box price, and bi-yearly pve expansions at full price, and then also keep the battle pass and cash shop and strip down earnable cosmetics further.

not really, in league you can get a free skin each week and a new hero in a couple of days, meanwhile 8 months for a skin and no idea on how long for a new hero.

Now it's not even that.
shittake.
Asmon: I don't care about skins, so no one should care.
A lot of people use cricket, straight talk etc. Bc you get access to the same phones and plans with similar or better pricing depending on what you need and it's just flat fee every month and you can switch phones/carriers whenever you want. So it's just easier to deal with and lot less hoops to go through whenever you want to switch or get a new phone.
@@TruBBT dude it was such a bad take for him he litterally said "F poor people i dont want to be bothered by cheaters" when there are litterally better systems out there that dont absolutly F over poor people.
@@logankent5865 Yeahhhh that was kinda bad lol especially bc he's not even probably gonna play the game long enough to get to a level where the few cheaters actually showed up which was really high elo. Ow1 had smurfing issue not a cheater issue and this was supposed to limit smurfs too but it probably won't fix that either lol
@@TruBBT hilariously though blizzard is walking back the phone thing and if you owned OW1 you can play OW2 with out a phone so if cheating doesn't go up (which I doubt it will) it will prove asmons take was really bad.
Yea any tank without a shield will be non Meta for the entirety of the game
'It's the same game!'
COD players: 'First time?'
FIFA players: at least you no longar have lootboxes!
@@Skray14 2k:at least most of my launches are playable
heres the thing that i think about the taking the lootboxes out its a bad thing because for 1 in league they have lootboxes and it lets you get skins for free without having to pay you have options to get the skin you want or get a random skin it would work well in ow2 and thats what they needed is to have an option to buy the skin itself rather than only rolling them
It just seems like people want everything for free
@28:40
Yes, you literally only earn 60 coins a week IF you finish all of your weeklies which equates to $0.60 cents of value.
