Asmon projects his opinion of cosmetics being irrelevant to everything even when he talks about how he wants to play characters that look like idealized forms of himself and disregards the argument that a majority of people care about customization and these companies use predatory practices to have them subsidize the game for people like him.

    • @glorillafan

those cosmetics are valuable because you earn them by doing hard things in the game, no one cares about a skin anyone can get by spending 20 dollars compared to a skin you get by doing a challenge during a hard mode raid

I didn't spend any money on lootboxes in OW1, and I was able to complete the collection just from level-ups & weekly rewards & endorsements. The amount of free lootboxes you got in OW1 for free made it very consumer friendly. Yes, being able to buy the lootboxes is bad, but the amount you got for free never incentivized me to buy them.

So they kept spending more and more money on the devs, without getting any more money for their game (because it wasn’t attracting new players). The way OW2 is makes it better for new players, but worse for those same players if they play as much as you did

Asmon, the reason Battle Passes are bad is because it turns gaming into a chore, just another job in our day to day lives. We play video games to relax, not to clock in and out. I think since you're more in tune with MMOs you don't understand how absolutely irritating it is to fire up a game and see a list of objectives you have to complete that day.
The fact that Battle Passes monopolize your time is what is wrong. Maybe sometimes I want to play other games... Maybe some days I want to play, say... Dragon Quest 11, but then oh crap... Gotta do my dailies for Fallout 76. 4 hours of grinding dailies later, and now... I feel tired and not even wanting to touch a controller to play that sweet, sweet Dragon Quest.
More games need to be like Elden Ring and other Souls games. Play the game and beat it, that's it. No need to slap on dailies, nothing. I still play it all the time because PVP and new character builds are great. I will buy the DLC when it comes out, and that is how supporting a company really should be.

    • @16BitKamek
      @16BitKamek 2 ปีที่แล้ว

That's only if it's a bad battle pass. Games like Fallout 76 don't respect your time. I got Fallout First for a month and put in about 100 hours maybe more, and still only got 3/4 of the way done maybe. Fortnite is a great one to bring up having a great pass because I never felt like it was a long grind. Even at the start of the season levels are easy to get, and it actually gets easier to level up the closer the season is to ending since the amount of weekly challenges add up.
Edit: I looked up my hours for Fallout 76, and in 1 season I put in 168 hours, and still didn't finish it.

Yeah except in order for anyone to buy the boxes you needed to put down $60 for the game so be honest about that and also, it's that $60 pricetag that made it possible for lootboxes to have protection against duplicates and bad luck rng, there is no other lootbox in the f2p market that does that and that was primarily because of the original pricetag because that OW1 lootbox is not profitable the way it was set up, not in a f2p market.

7:30 this vid is full of bad almost seemingly forced takes but this is probably the worst but Asmon barely even played OW1 so it's not surprising. Each event, with 20 lootboxes you were almost guaranteed at least 1 legendary due to the pity system. You also usually got almost enough currency to get another legendary on top of that. That's not including the few epics, many sprays and emotes you got out of that $20 as well. So idk how 20 lootboxes = $26 legendary skin and spray. You spent less and usually got much more. Also with more and more heroes hitting the game, the price or economy on these skins that are restricted to only 1 of these heroes should diminish as well. In reality that $26 should've gotten you every paid item from the event.

Gotta say I'm not loving Asmon's takes on OW 2 as of recently. It is painfully obvious he doesn't really know what he's talking about when it comes to this game. Giving half ass takes about a game you don't fully understand and comparing its monetization techniques to other very predatory games seems kinda dumb when its previous system was far better. I usually think Asmon gives really good level headed takes but these just make no sense to me. He's acting like every single person spent 10 grand unknowingly on lootboxes which is far from the case. All this new monetization does is make the new player experience way worse and ruin any sort of progression. Not to mention the hero locking issue and other shit blizzard has done. It feels like asmon just sees "Lootboxes bad, battle pass good, therefore there's no issue." The situation is far more complex than that. Asmon focuses more on the uncertainty of a purchase than the actual pricing of it. It is fine to dislike lootboxes, but this system of extremely upcharged skins is far from consumer friendly. Just because the game is free, does not mean it is a better game. Asmongold does not seem to realize that. Just because it is a free game does not relieve itself of criticism. I'll prolly be pretty polarizing with this take but Asmongold really needs to realize that people are still unhappy with this game for a reason, it's not as simple as he's trying to make it out to be.

i think the real reason why people are missing loot boxes is not because they got them by paying, We got the loot boxes for leveling up and progressing in the game or playing the seasonal events or anniversary event. They could put exclusive bundles for sale to buy straight up or have legendary or mythic skins be the only option to be shop only. I really do wish there was a good sense of progression in ow2 other than competitive. Doing the Halloween event has less value now.

Compared to riots free to play model, this version of it will be unrealistic for casual free to play players to unlock a hero in a healthy amount of time. for league it took a week or 2, for this it looks like it's going to take a couple of months meeting the daily challenges incentivizing you to buy gold.

Can't support this bullshit at all. And dont give me the shit gambling and lootboxes. The only $ i spent on overwatch is when i bought it when it released ,every skin i wanted i got it for free. Every event skin i wanted i got it for FREE. Every level up you get a box. Every event you get free boxes. Arcade mode gives you 3 loot boxes. Arcade every 3 matches aswell give you a loot box ,you get 6 loot boxes just from playing arcade mode. And xp does not get higher everytime you level up,so for that 1 lootbox when you level up you always need the same amount xp when you reach a certain level. The first levels are the easiest they dont need lots of xp. Wich is again lots of free lootboxes.
The Artists acts like they are fucking underpayed lazy ass skins ,lazy ass fucking game.
Edit: People comapred the 26€skins to skins that are chromas and they have more detail and more changes and color variants then the actual fucking 26€ skin. Hope this game dies just like fucking overwatch 1 did. Blizzard does not deserve shit.

But attracting a player base is much different than retaining one. Blizzard has been in shambles - and even if this game has enough base gameplay allure to keep people logging on, I wonder how long before the holes in the foundation are too apparent. They're going to REALLY have to listen to the community to keep it alive.

Op mayhem any game and mayhem is just cc hell.
But each time you have your team's resources not touch everyone, 80% of the time you have babies trying to bully the support into carrying the whole team, by enabling everyone to be cocky.
PvP is the whole game. PvE is shit. If you can't get along with 2 or 3 other people, you will lose, even if you are pulling your weight, because they leave mid game.
    This is a joke.
60 coin skin costs are at 1900. Battlepass has the most value and it's the sole thing priced adequately.
I bought the deluxe edition and never spent anything within anymore.
Overwatch is about interacting with people. I got to play with plenty of masters back in the day. I didn't touch competitive after being gold for myself.
That's only relevant, because back then you couldn't play against a master's player, even if they lost 20 times in a row trolling their qp.
That means that my above 50% winrate got me to that level and that with 1k+ hours spent gives me the right to say, the game is trash, never again. 500 hours were spent with a girlfriend and another 300 with an ex. I met both of them in ow 1. Even if I get broken up with her, I will never touch this game ever again and it's stupid to assume that I would ever spend money on it.

They should have implemented a system to unlock all overwatch 1 cosmetics purely from challenges or some type of currency you get for playing the game. Then you can have all the overwatch 2 cosmetics be in the battlepass and in the shop to buy. It would have been simple as that, they kept the old currency so just make that currency earn-able to then buy OW1 stuff.

To be honest, I think if Overwatch 2 were a brand new game and OW1 had never existed, no one would complain much about the way the monetisation is done. It's the fact that OW1 allowed to earn cosmetics relatively easily simply through playing the game as well that makes it feel so bad to many people that this option is now almost entirely gone. A risky move by Blizzard because they must've known that would piss off a lot of people, but honestly I think that (sadly) their little gamble is going to pay off because the whales will dump money into the game anyway.

The cosmetic system in OW1 was better, but the gameplay itself is far superior in OW2. Switching to 5v5, having one 1 Tank in Role Queue, and the new Role Passives all make the matches feel much better. After seeing the price and time for the Battle Pass, I'm okay with them. It's $10 and you have 55 days to finish it. That's about 1.5 levels per day, which is very doable if you play 3-5 matches to finish your daily challenges.

The thing about the OW2 Battle Pass is that if you fail to unlock the hero in time, That's it. You can't play Kiriko anymore (until Blizzard decides to do a special sale where you pay half the price of the original game to get one character).
The thing about Overwatch 1 was that you paid 40-60 dollars to play it and you got all the characters, no character was locked behind a paywall or battlepass because you already paid the money. Cosmetics added nothing to the gameplay other than changing your look, and even then, the lootboxes were free.
I still think that the Lootboxes in Overwatch late 2018 and onward were the best form of video game lootboxes.
They were balanced and fair, had a good pity system to ensure you got legendaries, and duplicate items gave you a small amount of coins to spend on cosmetics you don't own yet.
Overwatch 2 has none of that. It was announced 3 years ago and they added barely anything, removed many maps from the game, and even after launch they still had to remove a character because he was bugged, as if they did nothing in the past six months of "open-beta"
    It's pathetic.

Early Access' issue is that it's been converted from a useful feedback and funding source into a scummy business practice for games to be released incomplete to immediately cash in on the consumer.
It's still a great tool, but unfortunately, studios that release games EA for legitimate reasons now get lugged into the same category as larger studios that do it as a business model for shipping immediately into sales without having to cave in to release quotas.

let's face it, ow1 lootbox reward system was way too good, and no other games have a better system than this. In ow2, blizz change the reward system to match other games and go f2p, of course players base is going to be upset. Just bring back the lootbox and either sell the game for $20-40 or make battlepass more appealing.

I got Overwatch a couple years ago and played it pretty consistently. Over two years, I never bought any loot boxes and I was able to obtain at least 70% of the cosmetics and what not without spending a dime. I even watched enough of the OWL streams to get the OWL skins for free! The original game rewarded players for playing a lot and consistently to a point where loot boxes were an added bonus to your dedication. I don't understand why people who barely played the original game have the biggest issue with the loot boxes. I really love Asmon but he has a lot of weird takes for someone who barely played OW1 after the first couple seasons.

  • @Rjwubs
    @Rjwubs 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

I think a lot of the anger towards ow2’s battlepass was because they stripped the lootbox system and replaced it with an arguably worse system. But I think a better way to have done it is like Rocket league. They originally had lootboxes and when the game went ftp, they added a season pass system whilst retained the lootboxes. So if you don’t like the grindy linearity of the season passes you’d still regularly get lootboxes and even has a blueprint system for even more options.

  • @P1ay3r7
    @P1ay3r7 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I agree with Asmon regarding the 'people won't complain if the game is good' and 'OW has good gameplay'. The thing is that the only major improvement in gameplay that exists is that it's 5v5, and removing the tank meta. The gameplay, while good overall, it's pretty much the same (as well as most of the design as well), which is why it makes people mad at Blizzard because most of the changes in OW justifies a major update patch (an expansion at most); *_NOT_* a whole new game.
Also, regarding lootboxes, I get where he's coming from about paid lootboxes. Paid lootboxes are bad. But OW1 had those same lootboxes available to farm if you play the game, making people had a motive to play the game. Which ties with the following topic:
Regarding his take of 'You should not expect F2P games give away cosmetics', he's right, but at the same time, don't expect to retain players, because there is no incentive to make them keep on playing. Which is why people complain about the missing (free) lootboxes and the awful Battle Pass system.
For example: Fortnite's battle pass rewards you for playing by getting stars. While the amount of free stuff is low, the stars are stackable for another battlepass, and you can farm premium currency. After farming 2 seasons, you finally get enough currency to unlock the premium battle pass, which in turn gives you more premium currency, along with rare cosmetics. Moreover, once you unlock the premium battlepass, unless you stop playing, you'll always get enough for the next premium battlepass.
Another example is the events in gacha games. By making special characters, equipment or cosmetic items as a reward for playing the events, you'll always get people that will play to unlock it.
21:40 and regarding this take: this can be implemented in the current battle pass, and you'll basically have the same progression system, except current one would be season focused

The battle passes in FH also have a premium section. But you do get unique weapons, crates and you get 11-12k steel throughout the course of the battle pass. The premium costs $10, and if you were to spend that same $10 on a steep pack you get the same amount of steel for your money. So the battle pass in For Honor is actually kinda worth it

Very bad and ignorant take by asmongold. Lootboxes in OW were the closest to fairest of a monetization scheme you can have. For a live service game (with the initial $50 buy in or whatever it was) you had free characters, free maps, free game modes... and despite all that, you had the ability to gain any new skin, emote, or otherwise for free at no extra cost. You had tons of people who had 80-90% of the unlockables unlocked WITHOUT PAYING A CENT. THAT'S why people miss lootboxes. Without payingit takes about 4 months to get one skin? Something like that? The equivalent would have been done a few weeks in OW1 WHILE unlocking everything else.
"You paid more under lootboxes." Highly untrue for several reasons. 1) everything was finite with a bias towards unlockables 2) if you DID get repeatables, you get money compensation to use towards whatever. Because of this, there was a very visible finite system. There were some number crunches done on reddit and you're paying far more under current shop than you would have ever paid in OW1 if you were starting from scratch.
Bringing down lootboxes down to "gambling" is ignorant. It is not comparable. "If mythic skins are $300..." but if "gambling" is 10 cents for 2 items? Not comparable whatsoever. There's greater math and metrics to these things. The average OW player is listing their pros and cons instead, they're not gambling fiends. And as it turns out, the lootbox system was better across the board. In fact, I'm willing to bet Blizz got rid of lootboxes BECAUSE they were so generous with lootboxes... with the fan's dissatisfaction giving them the trigger to pull the ripcord. Unfortunately, the players realized the trade was awful.

It is one thing if the content of Battlepasses is completely cosmetic, but OW2 locks characters behind the premium battle pass and even if they are free for everyone later on at absurdly high lvl 50+ Battlepasses, this makes ranked p2w because you get more champions earlier and can learn the champions before f2p players can. As soon as battlepasses affect gameplay in any shape or form they are inheriently objectively bad and there is no arguing around it.

I think the only way for a battle pass to be healthy is if it is for the multiplayer, while there is still a progression system where you unlock stuff as you go. Without a built in progression system the pacing is atrocious because you only get 1/10 rewards and you actively see them denying you your items that any other normal game without a battle pass would just allow you to unlock

The problem is, for a lot of people, it wasn't free. They paid for overwatch 1. And overwatch 2 is the SAME EXACT GAME, except features which they paid for are now removed. Remember, OW1 is no longer playable. Part of the appeal was that you COULD earn skins and what not just by playing. If overwatch 2 ACTUALLY was a sequel, i'd have no problem with it having this monetization scheme. But the fact that they changed the title just to validate their changing the monetization system is just shit. I'd honestly prefer just to shell out another $60 to have OW2 be it's own thing with the same loot system from OW1, but that's obviously never going to happen. Hell, i wouldn't even mind paying for a battle pass if they actually worked on the freaking game, and made playing actually rewarding.
