this is so sad, I was captivated as a teen the first time I saw the Metabarons, the creativity in those books is orgasmic

Just found out today that he died the 2nd of April... I was looking for I, dragon 3 and didn't expect this... This made really sad.
I think I bought my first album in 1985 (dark star) and later the underzone. I still have a copy of Heavy metal where the fourth power first appeared in 1990, his art really blew me away. Funny thing was that they printed the pages wrong so a double page was printed on two different pages. 20 years later they were republished (in the Netherlands) the correct way.
The meta barons will always be my favorite series, Jodorowsky's dark twisted fantasies beautifully illustrated is just stunning!
so... no more albums to look forward to other than a collectors book of illustrations and sketches i guess... I think I'm gonna read all 19 albums back to back tonight.
    You will be missed....

Everything about Juan's work is what I've always wanted to be as an artist.

Another legend leaves this world, the way he did those space shots are still incredible, the imagination, colors, draftsmanship, details, still unmatched.

Adieu Mr Gimenez, rest in peace. Incredible source of inspiration and bringer of dream.

Damn, that sucks. The guy was a legend. The Metabaron saga was some crazy and brilliant stuff. At least he had a better run than most will and made his mark before the reaper got him. The worst part of life is death.

If he was working in watercolors that is even more incredible. The level of control and creativity is through the roof!

He was one of the greatest! I still look at him for inspiration. I think I remember him coming to the studio once. Do you remember that?

Great tribute to the art of Gimenez, Rich. I'm a fan of his art, although I only discovered his art fairly recently. I think I'll check out some of his original art on the auction sites. Thanks for posting and stay safe, RIP, Juan.

Another thing, Rich: How about you go over some of Gary Gianni's stuff. He's pretty much as if a Golden Age illustrator would be drawing comics. My biggest hero. He did draw a Hellboy short story, given that Mike Mignola is a fan of his, and is especially known for illustrating Game of Thrones books and the original Howard Conan stories collected by Del Rey.

I initially meet his work way back in the 90s while I was training as an in betweener for an classic animation company and we used to share and show the new heavy metal magazines that were coming out!! I was surprised on how good he was and he was Latin American so that really gave me a push for trying harder with my art!! He will really be miss!!

I would not be an artist without Juan Gimenez and the Fourth Power. Ive done homages to many panels from that work in particular.

I recently saw an expo in Paris, the originals were incredible. Very sad. Long live a legend, R.I.P. (I believe his works were watercolor and unfortunately, he died in Spain).

Another impressive thing about his work is his courage (to me, at least) in using DARK colors! Like it's not enough to commit to hand-coloring, he actually goes the necessary step further to really bring things to life. Super work!
It looks like he changed up either the surface or the medium for the second volume, because the color "takes" to the surface a lot better. The first book you went thru, the color seemed to just sit on the paper, sorta like plain ol' 2-ply bristol. The second volume looked like a much higher quality paper was used.

The old man at 7:03 kind of looks like Jodorowsky. Don't know if it was intentional though.

Love this video. Love your videos in general. They’re just fantastic. If I could offer just one small suggestion, maybe just a tiny bit less bouncing up and down and up and down on on the pieces. You seem like a really chill guy and I love that. Maybe a tiny bit of that chill can drift over to your mouse hand. :) Love you man, stay safe.

I swear if you watch his videos you'll see him clean his brush off on his leg. Those are caustic chemicals he's wiping off again and again on his pant leg. Doing that for 20 years of painting in oils and using solvents to clean your brushes could have caused his cancer.
