    I grew up with comics like these. I wish that more people in the US would discover these treasures. I mean super heroes are fun but this is a different level. Both the art and the stories are far more mature and imaginative and thus they have a lasting appeal. Please check Requiem Chevalier Vampire, by Pat Mills and Olivier Ledroit. Great story, with dark sarcastic humour and absolutelly gorgeous hand painted super detailed gouache artwork.

      @@RichardFriendartist I will make you a list of suggestions of some of my favourites. Your inking is really great and Im sure that you will do great with Blasterkid. I dont think that you HAVE to make it coloured. Black and white art when executed by people like you can be equally stunning if not better. For example I love equally the painted Slaine of Simon Bisley and the pen and ink version of Massimo Belardinelli.

    I was born in 1968. Heavy Metal started in '77. I was lucky and my dad let me have them in spite of my age. I had almost a complete run until a spat of unemployment in the early 2000's. Make sure you cover God, alias Richard Corben.

    Bilal mixes everything with everything else. In a single panel he puts dry pastels, acrylic paint, color pencils and whatever else he feels like it. There are some videos of him drawing on TH-cam if you search

    Another entertaining SFS, I mostly listen to it on Monday mornings like I would to a podcast, thank you! I have all of the Incal and Metabaron stuff, Moebius is right up there in the top 10 of "most influencial comic book artists EVER" (I was lucky enough to meet him briefly during a signing session here in Frankfurt). As for your question about how comic books are doing in our countries, hm, I think the "regular" comic book had a good run in the early 2010s when a lot of Marvel, dc and Image stuff got licensed and ended up on supermarket racks (which was remarkable insofar as, comics-wise, Germany used to be a third-world-country). Sadly, those are being replaced these days by merchandise-vehicle titels for say, How to train your dragon, Playmobil, Lego titles and more that are cheaply produced and for the most part are bought for the toys that come with them, not the comic book pages. On the other hand, albums and graphic novels are gaining acceptance among the older audience, there just was a long interview (2 full pages) with Mignola in one of the largest "serious" papers, and from what I have heard, sales are climbing with every passing year.

  • @LordZontar

    Bilal, Moebius and Caza were my three most favourite Heavy Metal artists. I'd pick up any issue in the 1980s and 90s featuring their stories and just get myself lost in the artwork. Druillet and Sempiri were also favourites.
    BTW, Enki Bilal was not "Moebius inspired". He and Giraud were contemporaries; both worked for Pilote under Rene Goscinny and later became two of the artists for Metal Hurlant magazine back in the 1970s. His style was his own.

    • @larslarsen5414
      @larslarsen5414 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes I was also a bit surprised but that comment. I am not sure who was first Moebius, Caza, Druillet or Bilal? There is also a couple of Italians (Manara, etc) that also share some style features with Moebius. In my mind Moebius was the best, but I am not sure that neccessarily makes him the "inventor" of the style that they certainly all shared to some extent.... But interesting point to raise...

    • @LordZontar
      @LordZontar 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@larslarsen5414 Well, the inspirational source would have been one of several 19th and 18th century illustrators in Europe and Japan who worked with the fine-line stroke in their inking, and old engravings and wood-block prints.

    • @larslarsen5414
      @larslarsen5414 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LordZontar I guess you are right. But, also, if you look at 22:51, there is this yellow building in the bottom corner. Personally, I would not be able to say whether that was drawn by Moebius or Bilal if it was taken out of context. There is something new about the rythm in the cross-hatching perhaps that these guys came up with?

    • @LordZontar
      @LordZontar 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@larslarsen5414 I think a lot of Moebius' inspiration for his short-stroke hatching style was derived from Gustave Dore's and Jean Edouard D'argent's illustrations for separate editions of The Divine Comedy.

    Ok here are some suggestions. Some are new, some are old but generally Im picking what inspires me artistically.
    1) Battle. British series mostly with wwii stories. These are traditional stuff with old style fantastic inks and amazing attention to details of vehicles, airplanes etc.
    2) Slaine by Pat Mills from 2000AD.
    3) Sha, Olivier Ledroit and Pat Mils. Fantastic hand painted panels. They just dont make them like this anymore.
    4) Requiem Chevalier Vampire, by Pat Mills and Olivier Ledroit. The peak of their collaboration imo. These books are gold.
    5) Hombre. Antonio Segura and José Ortiz. Postapocalyptic spanish comic with great grey characters.
    6) Hercules by Titan Comics. One of the best drawn and digitally colored comics out there right now imo.
    7) Wheel - The prophecy of Korot. A mix of sci fi and postapocalyptic fantasy.
    8) The Throne of Clay. Great comic about the hundred years war
    9) Thorgal by Jean Van Hamme and Grzegorz Rosiński. Viking fantasy with a twist. Classic.
    10) Storm by Don Lawrence. Classic books. Postapocalyptic sci fi with glorious painted panels.
    11) The Eagles of Rome by Enrico Marini. Great art and also great story.
    12) Diosamante by Alejandro Jodorowsky and Jean-Claude Gal. Fantastic art.
    13) Royal Blood by Alejandro Jodorowsky and Dongzi Liu.The story is... weird but the art magnificent.
    14) The Iron Divisions by Jean Luc-Sala and Ronan Toulhoat. The wwii continues with mecha. Nuff said.
    15) Elric by Blondel. The newest adaptation. They deviate from the books but they are doing it in interesting way and the art is top notch.
    Im closing with two american suggestions that sadly flown under the radar of most and they could be easily european publications.
    16) Artesia by Mark Smylie. Watercolored art and absolutely insane world building.
    17) Age of Bronze by Eric Shanower. This is a life's work. The best adaptation of the Trojan war in any medium. Its ongoing for ages but its clearly a labour of love. Great inks.

    I'm French, so I do know these books very well. I actually own the 8 books of the Méta-Barons saga and most of Moebius' comic books, including the special Noir et Blanc edition of Blueberry (raw scans and pages at the original A3 size).
    In the past, everything was called "bande dessinée" or "BD". Today, the term Roman Graphique (graphic novel) is a bit odd and vague. I'm not sure to know what it means. But, according to what I see in my bookstore, I can tell you that European comic books like La Caste des Méta-Barons are very popular. Mangas are very popular too, especially among teens because they are less expensive.
    If you like this type of coloring, you should check the work of Enrico Marini, a Swiss artist who speaks French, German, Italian and English. His work is always gorgeous . He recently made an excellent Batman comic book (a one shot in 2 parts), but he's best known here for his 2 series "Le Scorpion" and "Les Aigles de Rome". He shows his process on his Twitter and Facebook accounts quite regularly (sketching, inking, coloring with fluid acrylic paint, etc.).
