  • Old Gaffers of Western Australia put their craft through a capsize and recovery exercise.
The Welsford Navigator proves itself as a tough little boat with marvellous flotation and recovery attributes.

One of the first times I took my Navigator out, I pushed things a bit in gusty conditions and managed to put her over. I think I'd be hard put to accomplish that again, with a little experience and learning to add some ballast when sailing alone. I to was amazed at how well the boat sailed while filled with water. I must say I was a bit grumpier then these guys as it was cool and turning cold and my capsize wasn't planned. Just to be clear, this is a VERY stable boat and the small boats I had previously sailed were Lasers that you can put up on nearly a 90deg angle and still keep upright. I was sailing in gusty conditions just let things go a bit to far. In the 6 years since, I've sailed in a wide range of conditions, including 30+ knot winds alone, and while those conditions can be a bit nerve wracking, I've never since worried excessively about capsizing.

That was literally the calmest capsize I have seen in my life

Thank you so much for posting this. I have a yawl rigged Navigator and have never test capsizing. I am encouraged to see that she doesn't want to turn turtle. I will have to do this myself though. Kevin Nav "Slip Jig"

Love the look of the Welsford design, especially the Navigator, the only thing that puts me off is i've heard they are complicated to build

Complicated compared to what? I thoroughly enjoyed my build, without having previous experience with this type of project. What I did have was time and little pressure to get it done. I didn't find any of the individual steps difficult, and in the moments where I was second guessing myself on a step, I found the community of builders, and John himself, very helpful. It's not a slap together stitch and glue design, but if you have time and a little patience, it is an enjoyable build. It took me just under 3 years to complete. Part of that is due to the fact that I didn't have access to a heated garage and so the piece work was completed in the basement in the winter and the putting it together part had to be done over the summer months (it's negative 20 F. this morning : )

Nice! I only wish my boat, a Sea Pearl, would do that! 🤔

Thanks for sharing. Has the navigator water ballasts? In case, where they full or empty?
