Red Velvet was always meant to be a five-member group, but their debut was rushed to give the company good press and Yeri was still too young (I think korean law was also changed around the same time so that minors couldn't work as many hours in a day anymore). So the girls debuted as four and Yeri was simply added to the group the next year, when they came back with Ice Cream Cake/Automatic. They didn't have another "debut", but the girls do consider Ice Cream Cake their official debut, since that's where "the Red Velvet" really started. And yeah, the dual concept of Red and Velvet was established from beginning that's why Happiness was quickly followed by Be Natural and their next comeback Ice Cream Cake had the velvet b-side Automatic also promoted. They really go from one extrem to the another and it's so seamlessy it's stunning.
In Happiness they had their hair dyed in their individual official colors, so you can distinguish them pretty easily:
Irene = pink
Seulgi = yellow
Wendy = blue
Joy = green
And the neos clowned Taeyong for his TY track TY track rap for years, it's hilarious!
Also, due to the shitfest SM was in at 2014 due to various issues, they decided to divert the attention by debuting the GG in the middle of it and let them take the blunt of it ! So, I guess they thought Yeri was too young to handle such high pressure debut and feedback and honestly it was a better decision at that time.

Happiness is their official debut song although Irene also called Ice Cream Cake their debut (since that's when Yeri joined c:).Yeri was a part of Red Velvet from the beginning, there's a shot at the beginning of Happiness where she's shown quickly. But she was too young to debut at the time so they added her later
Red velvet is the real OG of 3rd generation girl group in kpop! The only group that is not afraid to take any risks by constantly trying new concept, make drastic changes and all members are all rounders! We stan multi talented queens! Red Velvet's influence is solidly R&B based. But you will find that they have a wildly innovative side as well. RV gets praised by music critics around the world for never playing it safe and constantly pushing the boundaries of the genre.
Korean Netizens recently voted Red Velvet as the group with the overall best discography in Kpop. Most of the time the title track isn't even the best song on the album.

Red Velvet's talent was on the next level from the beginning. The Red and Velvet sides were already known from the beginning unlike other groups trying different things trying to find their groove. There were many listeners that were so focussed on one genre that people dismissed them because they did not like that particular release not knowing they were capable to do it all, established or experimental. There were some controversies with some graphic images on the original MV that had to be modified which did not help either. They were also following the ever popular Girls Generation and f(x) so it was hard to get their fan support up in the beginning.
Taeyong’s famous “Booming system up up! TY track! TY track!” Seven years later and various NCT members still tease him with that line at super random moments. 😂
And if you loved Be Natural, you’d definitely love Automatic.

Red Velvet always slay. They only have bop songs. Even their Bsides are title track worthy.

Be Natural is already 21yr old released song originally by S.E.S.- their senior girl group in SM. It has been a tradition in SM to make their gg's first comeback with a remake of their senior artists. Im obsessed with it nowadays 😅
The girls always had this freshness about them when they debuted and it was one of the main reasons Red flavor was such a refreshingly hit :) but they had a dual opposite concept with their names which made it something cool when they came out and are still considered one of the top GG of kpop now still.

Okay, happiness was their official debut, be natural is just a remake, the original song was from their senior S.E.S. which was an active group around early 2000s. Yeri was added but she is really supposef to join the group, it was just that the industry that time doesn't accept labor by ages lower than 14 so that is then she was added to the group. But the members treat Ice Cream Cake as their debut because that is the time that they became complete and also because Yeri is their lucky charm, since Yeri joined they had their first music show win.
12:15 Red Velvet is probably, no. I can confidently say that Red Velvet is the only K-pop Girl Group that really solidifies themselves with both sides (RED and VELVET). Most K-pop girl groups tend to focus only on one side, or probably their ballads are only a usual mid-tempo song in their album with very little to no rich harmonisations.
But Red Velvet is really different. They actually highlight the RED and VELVET really well. Strong not only on the visual aesthetics of the music video, but the way they are actually "serious" about vocals be it RED or VELVET songs put them to such a high standard in comparison to the other groups. Even the producers are shocked to see how different Red Velvet is, compared to other groups because Red Velvet most of the times do the layering in their songs by themselves, proving how well they work with their vocal ranges.
They are crowned as "the most musically interesting K-pop group" by Billboard for a reason.

I believe even the people who couldn't enjoy the red at first, eventually many of them fell in love with them as well. After fully experience Red Velvet, you can appreciate their underlying quality in the red songs. Don't need to try, it will find a way to you if it fits you 🥰

Yes the Red Velvet sides has been established, it's the reason why they're named Red Velvet. You should also react to the albums along side when you do the corresponding Title Tracks. Their bsides tend to fit with the concept of their title tracks (and they tend to be even better than the title tracks). So I feel like, to get the full experience, it would be nice for you to get introduced to the full thing :) Nice reaction, i cant wait for you to dive into more of their discography

Yes. They debuted with all their arsenal. Red Velvet has a very solid concept (dual concepts) they used whatever they want. Also, they used colors, fruits and animals like representation of them, you can see through the MVs. In the beginning, they used more that dual concepts but now not often.

Be Natural is a cover of a 90's song, which may be why you picked up on that older style vibe; it was originally done by a fellow SM group, S.E.S.
PSY invasion started in 2012 though, 2 years before Red Velvet debuted and also BIG BANG, 2NE1, SNSD, SUPER JUNIOR, and many more were starting to pave a way for KPOP globally/internationally.
But yeah..what you just experienced in this reaction is the concept of Red Velvet in a nutshell. You’ve experienced their bright, upbeat, unique, and cute side aka their RED side. Then they hit with the sensual, mature, and r&b/jazz influenced style and music aka their VELVET. RED VELVET. They do both sides well and they even combine the two concepts and music style together for upcoming title tracks they you will be checking out in the future.

I occasionally just look for the reactions from folks discovering Red Velvet, so hi :D I was also so blown away the first time I heard "Velvet" side Red Velvet and was like waitwaitwait. Where did this 90's R&B Girl Group come from??? I loooooooove.... this side. And I love all sides now, and I first got into *liking* Red Velvet from their summer happy cutesy stuff, but I didn't become a huge ReVeLuv until I got into the discography and heard some of the R&B, soulful, velvet side stuff. Obviously they don't stick to a strict duality, especially as the years go by, but I always love straight away songs with the velvet influence coming out heavier and I will forever love Be Natural and Automatic as the start of that side.

There is the red, the velvet and the red velvet concept (also the weird one) for them. My favorite is the last one because it is just so good and unexpected!! I think you like their velvet side so you will LOVE Automatic

Yeri was always supposed to be in the group. She was too young to debut @ the time but scandal stuff was happening with SM so they rushed red velvet's debut so Yeri had to debut in Ice Cream Cake era when she was old enough

While Happiness was their "debut," the members considered Ice Cream Cake as their official debut with Happiness and Be Natural as their pre-releases.
Rumor had it that Red Velvet was supposed to have a similar concept as NCT with new members being added (they even had the SMRookies girls lined up for it & they appeared in Happiness). But people weren't happy with that concept so RV stayed as 5.
Btw, you just experienced their 'Red' (Happiness) and 'Velvet' (Be Natural) sides, so it's always fun to watch people being shocked over how drastic in change their concepts were each comeback :)
Hey RJKPOP 🙂 !! Red Velvet is known for having psychedelic art in mvs hence why happiness is so like trippy/artificial?! Thier style is very different from other kpop mv its a cool art concept and they nail it each time they do it in a comeback! You'll notice it more and more as you progress in this RV journey 🤗
If I could recommend the next songs to react to, they would be Dumb Dumb, and Huff & Puff. They are different from what you already reacted to.
Huff and Puff is a b-side song but sounds excellent.
To answer to your question, Yeri, the fifth member, additionally joined Red Velvet one year after their debut.

There are many sensible as well as tin hat level theories as to why Yeri joined late but the reasons have never been confirmed. It was definitely a tumultuous time at SM for multiple reasons. You can actually see a tiny Yeri in the jungle background in the intro for Happiness, bottom centre at 1:37! They often paired red and velvet mvs close together each comeback so it's nice to see them side by side like this. The red/velvet duality was pretty much pushed as their concept from the beginning. I'm guessing there will be a few more red songs that won't be quite to your taste! As someone who's been following kpop since 2010 your crisis about how long ago 2014 was made me feel so old...
Your confused expressions at the start of Happiness perfectly sum up RV somehow. Wendy's shine on me bridge is iconic! They did a cute teaser welcoming Yeri just before Ice Cream Cake. You had definitely adjusted your expectations after Happiness only to have them blown out of the water 5 seconds into Be Natural haha! Be Natural is a remake of an SES (1st gen SM girl group) song from 2000, Irene and Seulgi first covered it pre-debut as part of SM Rookies, the project that most of NCT came from and Aespa's Ning Ning as well. Excited for ICC and Automatic next!

The style of Be Natural follows a Nu Soul vibe from the late 1990's, following groups like Zhane, not surprisingly, since this song is a remake of an early 2000's kpop track.
I hope you can react to the lyrics too bcs even tho happiness seems like a cute song it also has really good and important meaning. Also RV usually doesn’t have subs in their MV’s so yeah I think lyric videos are necessary too
idk why but red velvet is the only kpop group i know that nails the r&b vibes. they have ✨iconic✨ red songs but their velvet side is just so good.

Be Natural felt like a 90's song coz it was released by SM 1st girl group, SES who debut in 90's. SM girl groups always release a remake from their seniors after debut.
I think on the Be Natural Video, what your trying to describe is kind of a 90's Neo-Soul New Jack Swing Vibe with the back horned sections coming in and out.
You'll definitely enjoy the B-sides way more base on the music preference you just stated.
