    That is the coolest bass guitar ever made. Period. And I consider myself a Fender man.

    I had a passive RD Standard in the 80s. Still one of my favorite body shapes, I still wish I had it. Never sell your gear folks.

      Nevermind is recorded with a Ripper. If you want to hear the RD bass, Krist used it live at the Paramount theatre in 1991 and on many other occasions.

      Even though one of the guitar players had an RD, they also used a Hagstrom Fantomen which is basically an RD copy but with improvements like a Fender scale and lundgren pickups

    Nirvana bass player Krist Novoselic said that he could throw his RD Artist into a wall and that he didn't even have to retune it after picking it up again.

    I also have one of these (in a similar color but more of the traditional 3-tone sunburst). Great tone, but a heavy and big beast. Funny, how they did piece together the bodies of those basses, 2/3 and 1/3. Especially visible in the one above in the clip as Gibson seemed to use some kind of curly maple piece on the treble side.

    Now, with Agnesi involved with Gibson, I have to say, Norlin did cool stuff compared to what Gibson does now. The concept of the bass is 46 years old now. It might be dated, but I recently play my RD a lot, as my band members also think that this bass sounds best. Agnesi sounds a bit like the electronics is all crap, but I use the high mid/treble boost and it does well in the band mix ( and fits better to the bass model than to the guitar,which I also have). Nowadays (in 2023) they seem not knowing what to do with the bass models (except for making a Gene Simmons signature T'bird, seems a silly move to me), then there is a non-reverse T'bird, an EB-3-type and a modern EB-0 (Les Paul double cutaway). Norlin had the Les Paul Triumph, Ripper, Grabber, G3, Explorer, RD, Victory, SB and EB, they were a bit more experimental then.

  • @paulsimmons5726
    @paulsimmons5726 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    John Entwhistle supposedly had some connections and input on these basses, read it somewhere a long time ago. That would explain the Thunderbird type body design and some of the cool things that could be achieved with the Moog electronics, however the necks were disasters from the word go and the headstock design was typical Norlin, really sucked. Cool technology for tone if you work with it but Fender never worried about loosing market shares to this clunker, that's for sure!
    RIP Ox!

    • @doca9357
      @doca9357 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had one, the neck was extremely stable, had an all maple artist, never adjusted the truss rod in the 10 years I had it, spent around 40 hours week playing it. I used it fretless for 3 years, popped the frets back in and dressed the ends when I sold it. Was great coupled with a bassman rig.

    were the holes from an old string through or part of the moog stuff?

    • @Zelomeisterdude
      @Zelomeisterdude 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Googling images of this bass you can see that most have them strung through the holes, but it is the same bridge, so I'm not sure if it is just an option to be able to string it either way.

    • @offbeatbassgear
      @offbeatbassgear 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      There were quite a few basses in the seventies and early eighties that would allow you to either use a standard bridge feed or a string-through body option but I don't know of anyone that's still doing that, though I'm sure that someone must still offer it at least as a custom option. An old T-40 Peavey I own has that feature but nothing more recent that I own has incorporated that.
