    Six pack flying was what we learned. The constant Jepp updates, the low altitude airway map, folding and unfolding. Good Times.....
    Having the correct approach plate out for the correct runway, those timed VOR approaches were easier than the ice chilling NDB approach.

    what a beauty of a plane, this is a "classy Beechcraft" F33A, whoever buys it is going to end up with plenty of room for making upgrades to this flying machine, i would say better hurry and get it, planes in this shape dont come by easy; great presentation, outstanding final @Big Bear, loved it! great vid guys!

    You are VERY informative and great to watch. You are a very smooth guy, comfortable, knowledgeable, competent in front of the camera. I was a student pilot that ran out of money many years ago. Used to love getting off work and going out and just flying around by myself and watching the sun set. Love the channel! Tod in Vegas :)

    As an Air Force UPT graduate of 1969, then the AC47 in Vietnam and the B52, the F33 instruments were an upgrade from what I flew in the service. I then had a 1984 A36 that was equipped the same as the 33 you’re flying. Long before GPS and glass. We did have an autopilot and coupled approach, but navigation was VOR and paper maps and approach plates. Oh, and RNAV. Great channel, Rich and appreciate your flying commentary.

      71 UPT grad C-130 then KC-135E AFRES through Desert Storm. HSI was advanced tech, great voice activated NAV system sat behind me on the right side. Went to airlines finishing up on the 737-800 following the magenta road. Would still switch off VOR auto tune as we approached a fix now and then to get a manual cross check, had more than one young FO ask me why I did that, “peace of mind” was my answer. Thanks Rich, really enjoy these quick flights now that I am a penguin.

    That engine sound gives me chills from the accident I watched of one of these going down in a neighborhood during slow flight and stall training. They had just got out of the spin but didnt have enough altitude to recover from the dive. Anyway enough sad story good flying Rich.

    Great Video Rich. It brought back a lot of memories. I got my instrument rating in 1978 when I was 21 years old. It was in a rented Grumman AA-1B (what a POS). The next year I bought a 10-year-old 1969 Cessna 182 for $12,000. The problem was that it had the Shit Bendix radios and I lived in Portland where it's cloudy about 300 days a year. So, I scraped together another 8 grand and had installed two KX170B's (one with glide slope) a KT 78A transponder (no encoder) a KN 62 DME and KMA 24 audio panel. No autopilot, or HSI, but I thought I had it made. To have a reliable DME and Glide Slope was amazing. Today I wouldn't even go into IMC with that equipment.

Had almost exact same classic Beech paint scheme as this one with silver on top and maroon below. Interior almost identical. Can't beat that 6 cyl engine start-up. Thanks for bringing up the way we older folks use to fly with six packs, no auto pilots and if lucky a HSI instead of dual VOR’s on top of each other to do IFR approaches. I’m learning the G1000 now to get current again and cannot believe how easy it is to navigate with. I feel like I’m cheating or missing something. It’s so much info. Going to LA in a few months and would love a few hours with an OCR instructor to go over a few things. Would love to meet u guys.

    Nothin' like the look and sound of a Bonnie. I learned instruments in the late 70s with a panel about like that one. On my checkride I had to plan an ADF approach to mins at LGB. Broke off to vectors to an ILS, then did a missed back to SMO. Pretty tense, but happily I passed. First actual IFR flight was a similar panel in an Arrow from MYF to VNY. Boy was I happy to land on that one. Had my paper IFR Jepp charts unfolded all over the cockpit due to routing changes.
    I liked that Corvair van, too.

  • @TheAussiePipe
    @TheAussiePipe ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice one Rich! Same here! I got my CPL in North Queensland Australia in the mid 90’s and my instrument rating was done in (what I thought was an ancient even then) Twin Comanche with steam gauges, no autopilot, no gps, and a ATO (Authorised Testing Officer) who loved to fail one of the engines just as you were turning inbound on the NDB approach in IMC. Now that was character but also skill building 😉. Honestly now when I fly a modern Cirrus or something with my iPad, I still can’t believe how relaxed and easy flying IFR is with a level of weather, traffic, and situational awareness we could have only dreamed of back then when if an aircraft had a DME or Loran C system you were considered spoilt lol. Oh and don’t get me started on the job I used to get replacing all the paper approach plate amendments for everyone as the most junior charter pilot when I wasn’t flying beat up old C402’s and C310’s to some god forsaken place out bush 🤣.

Will take delivery of a factory new IO-550 and upgraded Super Simitar plus gross weight increase with D'Shannon STC. Will upgrade the panel to G500/GTN750/GFC500. All I remember seeing was 36's. They look very similar. One thing I noticed in the video is how quick the gear came up. I'll have to 'Google' the difference now. LOL Nice clean airplane. 8) --gary

    I got my Inst rating in the 70's...NO GPS, hard to use Loran-C, the "moving map" was a paper map that in turbulence required my wife to keep it steady...communication was a dangling microphone and crappy overhead speaker...(no headsets)...and the autopilot was me..."Otto". Lots of knob twisting, ID'ing VOR's and intersections..and praying there would be a runway in sight at decision height.
    At the time I worked for an airline where my dad flew DC-8's DC-10's. Without exaggeration, the technology in today's high end GA planes surpasses what he had in the DC-8.

    What I wonder about is how do you attach the cameras to the skin of the airplane. You definitely don't want them falling off, but easily removeable and not doing any damage to the plane. What is the trick for accomplishing all three things.

  • @tstanley01
    @tstanley01 ปีที่แล้ว

    The Bonanzas are cool because you can buy an all original and upgrade it over time to make it almost an entirely different airplane. You can add a bigger motor, tip tanks, increase the gross weight, add an AC, entirely glass panel, the Tornado Alley Turbo. You can turn it from a 160 kt 1100lb UL airplane into a 200kt, 1450lb UL airplane with over a 1200NM range...The biggest competitor to a new G36 isn't the Cirrus, it's a late 70s to early 90s used Bonanza that is lighter and ready to be modded out to make it perform better than a new one for less than half the price...The one I want is a 79-83 A36 that is all original, low time, with a run out motor, and modify it into my forever airplane (unless I hit the powerball)...

      @GWN_Guy I like the sixes. My dad had a 6/260. I've flown the 6 the lance and saratogas. Definitely a family airplane, roomy and can carry a lot .

    I can't see why anyone couldn't fly this plane IFR. It has everything that I flew with in T2J, F9F, F11F and F8U.

      My dad flew all those (except for the T2).
      He thought the F11F was the best one of the bunch.

      Early 90’s Bonanza anything over 9000TT. I figure 150 hours average per year would be considered normal time.

      We lost a great aviation person with his passing. He was a fixture as a director in COPA for us in Northern Ontario. He was originally from my home town and relocated up the road to Timmins.
      I missed a good plane for upgrading. Nice clean aircraft with a lot of potential.

    Whoa. “If you’re more of a VFR our pilot“. I thought if you were going to own a bonanza, you need to have an instrument rating both for insurance purposes, and for safety purposes, because of its high performance and ability to fly yourself into all kinds of weather situation’s and having enough skills to be able to stay ahead of the airplane. In your experience do you see a fair number of Bonanza owners without instrument ratings?

    • @FlyingwithRich
      @FlyingwithRich  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Instrument rating is always a good thing, but I know lots of people who have it and don’t fly IFR - just enjoy good weather flying. Thanks for watching!

      @@FlyingwithRich Agree - I have an ATP with 21,000+ hours. Fly plenty IFR at my "day job," but not a big fan of it in my Saratoga. My minimums are very high (1000-3 or I'm not going). Some of us still prefer day VMC for our fun flying.🙂
      BTW - I'm a product of late 1980's training as well - gave me a great basis to develop S.A. early vs. today's children of the magenta line. Nice videos - keep 'em coming!
