How to install VU lamps into Technics SE-A900s Amplifier with XAMR131 Bulbs A909 A1000 A1010 CA1060
I decided to put new bulbs into my lovely Technics amplifier, I did look on youtube to find a video on how to fit them but drew a blank. I had a quick look at the service manual and found it was relatively simple so thought I would make a video for anyone else that may like to know. This is the same principal for many other amplifiers in the range.

Amazing amp, I've tried & owned lots of amps over the years but this one is a KEEPER. My bulbs have died so I might try this repair soon. And as other have said, my pre-amp is flicking between sources as well. I read somewhere about taking the source select dial off & cleaning it but I'm ot sure I'll do that repair on my own

40Vdc per each PCB, and all lamps run in series? Interesting why Technics would do that. It could be fun to make a parallel LED modification to it. And LED's in this circuit should never induce a hum on the audio circuits, if a hum occurs then 1) Technics really dropped the ball on the engineering of the amp or 2) the person installing the LED's mistakenly did something to induce it.

hi Matthew, I am a great fan of Technics, I have this vintage Techincs A900MK2, playing it yesterday then today the right channel is gone, any clue or idea should has created the right channel to stop working. any West London service for Technics with your knowledge? cheers thank you.
Sadly as I am based in Devon I don't know of any. There is a very good secondhand shop in Hammersmith called x electrical they might do repairs or if not will know someone that does

I have the same pre+power amp components. A nice set of two, I had it about twenty-five years ago and still enjoy it. After a while after purchasing, my lighting lamps broke down, even though it's annoying, I use it like that. I didn't care when it malfunctioned, but when I saw your video, I thought of fixing it. But unfortunately I couldn't find the parts in Turkey.

Great video! I have just done this repair. Took about half an hour. I toyed with the idea of using LED ribbon just for fun, but this was very straightforward. A solder sucker was okay, but solder braid maybe would have been easier.
Many say the LED Version induces noize and Buzz into the amp. You did the right thing there. :)

Hi Matthew, great video. I have just purchased this amp and one side of the lights don't work. I have looked for the bulbs but can't find them anywhere. Any chance you can find them as I have followed your link but the link does not work anymore. Thanks in advance😊

Hi Matthew, great vid firstly. - what are your thoughts on the LED replacement boards that are available, any good? I also have this with the SUC pre amp. The input selector on the SUC keeps flicking to different sources - not too often but it happens - do you have any ideas on that also please?
Firstly mine also flicks between different sources usually a bit of contact cleaner will sort that out. As for the LED strips I don't know I've never used them but I've read other people that have used them and they said it does add noise into the system. And it also makes the amp non-standard
I've had two of the pre-amps and both had this issue. I've tried liberal use of contact cleaner into the selector rotary switch but it never seems to yield a permanent fix.
My workaround has been to use only the remote and to leave the rotary switch alone. It's not a perfect solution but it prevents aggravation as far as I'm concerned.
Meanwhile the lights have been out in my SU-A909S for about 2 years so I will be embarking on the repair shown by @matthewnorthmusic

Im looking at getting a a900 that has working vu meters but no sound, apparently. No pre amp included. Is this a common fault and is it worth the investment of £100 to try and get it working again? I enjoy fault finding and repairs on a basic level. Cheers
Is the no sound because there is no pre amp plugged in ? Might be worth checking the pre amp should be with it they were never sold separately
@@MatthewNorthMusic no, there isnt the pre amp. The seller says the VUs indicate signal but no sound. Would any signal from a source run the amp or is it dependent on the matching pre amp?? Im not familiar with this amp tbh.
Sounds odd the seller did have the speaker switch on the front turned on ??
@@MatthewNorthMusic just said no sound. looked hooked up, etc. You can use a different pre amp though right? doesnt have to be the technics one it usually comes with?
It had photo audio in but I'm not sure if there is a power pass through or not the powe amp has speaker on off switches bottom right when on a red led should show

i have the same set but my source selector keeps moving from my selection,eg tape ,phono etc.any idea why.
Common problem switch needs cleaning with contact cleaner mines the same
I have the same problem, input moves, a bit frustrating! I love this Technics amp, I've had since 1997. Loved the video Mathew. can you share link for replacement bulbs, please? I just want to be prepared if mine ever go.
